The Elkford Aquatic Centre held its annual Summer End pool party on August 28 th. Fifty-five kids
came down to swim and play on the crooked crayon and the water walkway. An ice-cream eating
contest was held, and oranges and watermelon were served for snacks. The kids played and swam
and a great time was had by all!
The Elkford Aquatic Centre has temporarily postponed their annual maintenance shut down
this year. Beginning on September 8th fall swim lessons will begin as usual. Please call the

Some of these seasons are joyous, others are heartbreaking but they are all part of life. We can grow in our
relationships by recognizing that life has seasons that we
must walk through. For many of us, we leave home, then
follow our dream in schooling or work, hoping that we will
find the seasons of total happiness. Everyone reading
this is going to ask what planet I am on as the days,
weeks, and months are often filled with disaster, hurt,
death. No happiness in any of those scenarios!
There can be happiness in our seasons of life but we
cannot do it on our own. Seek the direction of the Lord
and you will be ready to do what Timothy tells us to do in
2Timothy 4:1-2 “In the presence of God and of Christ
Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view
of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of
season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great
patience and careful instruction.”
We are all called to know right from wrong and we
are called to live lives that will be pleasing to the Lord.
We can be happy, we can live out every season of our life
being obedient and enjoying every minute and every
breath we have.
Enjoy this new season and seek His help. He is
waiting for you.
We are looking at a new season: the days are shorter,
it is quite cool in the mornings and we know that fall is
coming. Also, students will be back in school and life
will have more routine than we have had for two
months. For the students they will possibly be upset
that they have to get up in the morning and go to
school. For parents most are okay that the family
routine will be the order of the day.
We read about seasons in Genesis, the very first
book of the Bible. Genesis 1:14 says “And God Said,
“Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate
the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to
mark seasons and days and years...” Leviticus 26:4 is
God saying “I will send you rain in its season, and the
ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field, their
fruit.” At the beginning of the earth there was a plan in
place that would be productive for all mankind.
However, because of the free will given to mankind, we
wanted and want life to go our way! Psalm 1:1-3 speaks
of seasons of life with these words: “Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand
in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But
his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he
meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by
streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and
whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does
prospers.”
Each of us go through seasons in our lives also.
Blessings,
Pastor Kay

Register now! Copyright for Artists – Free Workshop
(Columbia Basin) – With the massive amount of media being easily shared digitally, how do we know what's fair to use
or what others can use of ours? Recent court cases with Canadian artists emphasize the importance of understanding
copyright. Presenting and accessing creative works–art, photography, video, writing, music–is easier than ever and this
has major implications on how we choose to showcase our creative output. From understanding copyright and its
applications for creators to fair dealing and fair use, lawyer and copyright expert Martha Rans will unravel the shifting
and evolving legal issues that need to be a major part of your business as an artist. This workshop is recommended for
all creators: visual artists, media artists, composers, writers, performing artists, and photographers and, approximately 2
hours in length.
Time & Date: 7:00– 9:00 pm, September 17, 2015
Location: Selkirk College - Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) Campus, 606 Victoria St., Nelson BC

APPLY FOR A WAGE SUBSIDY: HIRE A STUDENT
Popular School Works program now provides wage subsidies for apprenticeships
(Columbia Basin) – Businesses and organizations around the Basin can once again get support to hire students through
Columbia Basin Trust’s School Works program. The program provides a wage subsidy of $8/hour to encourage
employers to provide part-time employment to full-time high school and post-secondary students for a portion or all of the
school year. It also helps ensure students gain work experience in the region.
Small businesses, non-profit and First Nations organizations and public bodies in the Basin may apply. Co-op and
practicum student positions are also eligible.
South Slocan’s Drop Designs is one of the organizations that has participated. “The program allowed us to complete a
large number of projects that we don’t have resources for,” said owner Myla Jillings. “It is a very large benefit for our
company.”
Kootenay River Kampground, near Castlegar, was also able to take advantage of the program throughout the school
year. “It enabled us to extend our hours and have a park attendant on duty to greet guests and provide tourists with
directions and information,” said owner Mike Giesler. “We would not have been able to hire this position without this
subsidy.”
For the first time, the program will also provide an $8/hour wage subsidy for first-level apprenticeship positions in the
construction electrician, carpentry, heavy duty mechanic and automotive service technician programs.
“Through this subsidy, Basin employers will be able hire first-level apprentices and the apprentices will gain access to
local training,” said Lisa Kilpatrick, Columbia Basin Trust Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits. ”If this year works well,
we hope to continue to provide this support for apprentices into the future.”
“We are very pleased to be working with the Trust to deliver the School Works Program again this year – our third
year in a row,” said Tracey Whiting, Manager, Continuing Education and Contract Training at College of the Rockies. “It
is exciting to see so many business owners accessing this funding opportunity.”
For more information on School Works and to download the application form, visit cbt.org/schoolworks2015, email
[email protected] or call 1.877.489.2687 ext. 3584. Applications will be available on August 13, 2015.

Botany BC in Elkford
BOTANY BC 2015 was held in Elkford, in the beautiful Elk
Valley in southeastern B.C. The Elk Valley was chosen
because it is one of the least botanized areas of the
province that is reasonably accessible. It was a crazy year
weather-wise but it actually turned out well for the plants,
many of which were in full bloom.
A liverwort—Preissia quadrata
_Delphinium sutherlandii_, _ Astragalus crassicarpus_,
_Viola praemorsa_ subsp _linguifolia_ , _Astragalus
drummondii_ (1 plant only!). The second site at the Andy
Goode Creek area was up a very rugged track. Everyone
was able to view limber pines, the focus plant for this
trip.
The prize plant higher up was _Physaria
didymocarpa_.
Above the shooting range looking for Drummonds Milk Vetch
Thursday night started with a warm welcome and an
orientation of the weekend's proposed activities from the
organizing committee of Tanis Gieselman, Jenifer Penny
and Elizabeth Easton. The first speaker of the evening
was JoAnne Fisher, an ethnobotanist with the Ktunaxa
Nation, who welcomed us to the traditional territory of the
Ktunaxa Nation, followed by Clint Smyth who provided us
with an excellent introduction to the Elk Valley history,
physical environment, and ecosystems.
On the first day, participants had a choice of two field
trips. The first was a half day tour of Teck’s Greenhill's
operation to view reclamation research sites and a half
day visit to a BioBlitz site in the Elk Valley to collect
information that would be included in the Flathead BioBlitz
event taking place later in July.

On Friday evening, Warn Franklin, one of Teck’s
Environmental Officers, gave us an ‘Introduction to Teck’s
Biodiversity Program’. The second speaker of the evening
was John Przeczek of PRYZM Environmental Ltd. who
told us about ‘Developing a Native Tree and Shrub
Planting Program at Teck’s Elkview Operations’. We
finished the evening by hearing from Randy Moody of
Keefer Ecological Services about the area’s endangered
five-needle pines – Limber pine (_Pinus flexilis_) and
Whitebark pine (_Pinus albicaulis_).
A serious collector at work
The second field trip option on Friday was a day long trip
to high elevation sites in the Crowsnest Pass and Andy
Goode Creek led by Michael Keefer of Keefer Ecological
Services. The Crowsnest Pass site terrain was typically
sloping grassland and open woods with an interesting
selection of plants. Hard to mention everything of interest
but a few special ones were: _Penstemon nitidus_, _P.
eriantherus_,
_P.
lyallii_,
_Townsendia
parryi_,

The second day offered two more field trip options. The
first option was an approximate 8 km circular hike to
Josephine Falls led by Janice Strong and Gretchen
Whetham from Cranbrook. It was a good representation
of the local flora and there were enough interesting plants
that we had to work together to sort out a few of them.
The second trip option on Saturday was a journey into
the alpine area of Mt Gass/Ewin Ridge. The hiking part
was up through high subalpine meadows and then more
talus slopes, the kind of terrain that leader Hans Roemer
enjoys! There were good high meadow plants like
_Botrychium lunaria_ in the subalpine before heading into
the alpine zone higher up the slopes.
On Saturday evening, Michael Keefer from Keefer
Ecological Consulting showed us some great photos of
the ‘Flora of the Elk Valley’ and he gave his ‘Thoughts on
Revegetation Following Major Disturbances’. Our final
presentation of the session was given by Alison Burton,
the Coal Regulatory Coordinator with the Ktunaxa Nation
Council who spoke about Native Plants from the Ktunaxa
Perspective. It was a good selection of talks which gave
us a feel for the amazing plants that grow in the area and
the substantial efforts made by Teck to revegetate
massive areas. Great work on the part of the committee to
find
us
such
high
caliber
speakers.
All in all, everyone who made the big trek had a good
time due to the great speakers, amazing but crazy field
trips, food and accommodations that the organizers put
together for us. Thanks again to the organizers, and the
rest of the folks who made this such a very enjoyable
gathering.
We would like to extend our sincere thank you to all the
Elkford folks and businesses who contributed so much to the
success of our weekend. A big thank you to Don Takala for
making the United Steelworkers Union Hall available to our
group for the weekend. We'd also like to thank Karen Mills at
the Chamber of Commerce for being so welcoming and
providing such an amazing amount of information and
suggestions to help us get organized. More thanks to those
who provided accommodation for all our participants, the Hi
Rock Inn, the Elkford Motor Inn and of course the Elkford
Municipal Campground and for those who fed us,
Chauncey's, C & F Restaurant and of course Sherill
Anderson who put together our amazing barbeque on the
Saturday night. And we can't forget the guys at Teck who
went out of their way to welcome us into the world of mining
and biodiversity and reclamation and all the other businesses
who provided all the other little things that made our
weekend everything it could be.

Soup & Shampoo
I was looking at the website for a motel in northern BC
recently and they offered “Soup & Shampoo” in their
washrooms. Almost every motel and hotel I have stayed
at in my life have provided soap and shampoo. I’ve yet to
find a piping hot bowl of vegetable beef or chicken noodle
soup in the washroom! Like me, don’t you chuckle to
yourself when you see an unfortunate typo on a menu or
in an advertisement? After over 25 years of working as a
legal assistant at law firms, 6 years chairing a provincial
government advisory board, 3 years serving as the
president of one of BC’s political parties and 3 other years
as the director of public affairs for a church denomination,
I retired recently, and earlier this year launched my own
home-based writing, proofreading and online research
service.
You have (hopefully!) seen my small
advertisements in the Elkford Focus starting with the April
issue.
It has been a great experience thus far. I’ve worked
on an incredible variety of projects for people all over BC
plus a few in other provinces. I’ve helped update or redo
a number of resumes and cover letters for job hunters,
I’ve proofread manuscripts for aspiring authors as well as
papers for university students, I’ve written some stories to
go along with oil paintings that an artist was about to
exhibit, I’ve proofread the website for a silver jewellery
designer plus the website of a small community in the
Cariboo, I’ve helped someone prepare a presentation to
her mayor and council on the value of CBC radio, I’ve
prepared detailed instruction sheets for new staff at a
business, I’ve researched a boat and its current owners
for a prospective purchaser plus an orthopaedic surgeon
someone was on the waiting list to see, I’ve investigated
the online presence of a restaurant for a new owner, I’ve
worked on letters to various offices for one person plus a
fundraising mailout for someone else, for one church I’ve
sent weekly emails on upcoming events to youth and
parents plus kept their website current, I’ve helped a
grade 12 student get organized to apply for a number of
scholarships and bursaries, I’ve proofread the articles in a
monthly magazine on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte
Islands), and the list goes on.
Ever since I was a little boy reading The Bobbsey
Twins stories out loud to my mother as she got supper
ready or did the laundry and other chores, I have loved
reading and writing and anything and everything to do
with words. I’m happy to help you with your “word issues”
as well.
Please don’t hesitate to email me at
[email protected] and let me know what
you need some assistance with. As it says in my Elkford
Focus advertisement, no job is too small, and my rates
are very reasonable. One last idea: Christmas is coming
(yikes!) and I can help you make your 2015 family
Christmas letter the best one ever. As for your Christmas
shopping list, you’re on your own! Don’t leave it too late
and try to do as much shopping as possible locally.
Elkford’s small businesses need and deserve your
support.

2015 Summer Reading Club
“Build Your Own Story—Building Bodies”
On Assignment: Rockhard Health and Fitness Centre
A visit and interview with Rocky Culver
Thirty-two kids ages 5-11 from the Summer Reading Club
(SRC) visited Rocky’s Fitness Centre on July 9th. We
were given a very warm welcome by Rocky and had a
chance to try out all sorts of different equipment at the
gym. Later, we sat outside in the shade and interviewed
Rocky:
SRC: How many people a day visit the gym?
Rocky: Depending on the time of year, we have an
average of 100 people coming to the gym every day. The
gym is open 24 hours a day, so we even have members
coming in at 2 or 3 in the morning.
SRC: Can anyone come and work out at the gym?
Rocky: There is no fixed age rule for working out at
the gym. Some younger people are ready and capable to
work out earlier than others. I assess each member’s
capabilities and make sure that they know their
responsibilities and help to make their workout routines.
We also have a certified trainer. Some kids come with
their parents or an older sibling. Even babies come in
their carseats while their parents work out.
SRC: Who is your oldest member?
Rocky: I believe our oldest member is in his late 70’s.
It is great when you see older people staying fit and
working out. It is good advertising for me!
SRC: When did the gym open and who owned the
gym before you?
Rocky: I opened the gym about 28 years ago and
have been the only owner. Three years before opening
the gym, I had started working out. With the help of the
community, friends and family, we built the gym and it
opened in December 1988.
SRC: How much does it cost for a membership?
Rocky:
We have different membership options:
Students $35 per month; Adults $45 per month and
couples $60 per month. We also have a drop in daily
option of $7 per day. I am proud to say that in all the
years we have been in business I have only had to raise
the membership fees once. The reason I have been able
to keep fees down is because each member is
encouraged to help me keep the cost down to the
community by conserving energy (turning off lights when
leaving the building), wiping down the equipment after
using it, and taking care of the equipment so it is in good
condition for the next person.
SRC: What happens when you go away on holiday?
Do you close the gym?
Rocky: No, luckily I have good neighbours and lots of
friends who are around to take care of sidewalk shoveling
in the winter or any maintenance that needs to be done
when I am away. Also, because members have the door
code, they can still come in at any hour and use the
equipment.
SRC: What if every one of your friends is away?
Then what?!
Rocky: Well that is when you have to sacrifice things
for the success of your business. I would have to take
holidays at a different time.
SRC: If your membership expires, how do you renew
membership if no one is around?
Rocky: Most members know that there is a way to
leave membership dues and or notes for me. If they don’t
know how much to pay or have any questions for me, they
leave a note and I get back to them.
SRC: Have you ever thought about having a snack
bar at the Fitness Centre?
Rocky: Yes, I did and I even thought about where I
18
would build it if I was going to go ahead with one, but most
people bring snacks with them or go home to eat after
working out and it didn’t make business sense to have a
snack bar, especially as we are open 24 hours a day and
it would mean lots more manpower to run it.
SRC: Do you work out?
Rocky: Yes, I work out pretty much every day.
SRC: Why do you work out every day?
Rocky: Because I want to stay healthy. Exercise
maintains the body. When you take care of your body
with exercise and eat well you don’t need medicine to
keep you feeling great.
The Summer Reading Club kids were so interested in
Rocky’s business that some even offered to take over his
business once he retires!
Rocky gave all the visitors some delicious popsicles at
the end of the visit which were very much appreciated on
this very hot day.
Thank you Rocky for giving us your time for the
interview and the tour to your great Fitness Centre.

Another Smashing Wildcat Grass Smash
This marked the 10th year for the Wildcat Grass Smash Volleyball Tournament which ran in conjunction with
Wildcat Days on June 27 and 28. Fourteen teams entered, with players coming to Elkford from Calgary,
Lethbridge, Fort Macleod, Claresholm and the other Elk Valley communities. Teams consisted of 2 girls and
2 guys. Entrance fee was $120 and 100% of the fees were given back in prize money to the top teams. To
celebrate the 10th anniversary of the tournament, t-shirts were given to the players thanks to the generosity of

1life 1love Yoga
My name is Vanessa Lee Smith, I have lived in Elkford for almost 10 years. My husband works at the coal mine and I
have been selling Real Estate here for 9 years. Our 2 children were born and raised here and love Elkford as much as we do. We
are an active family and enjoy many summer and winter sports that our community offers. I have been a runner longer than I
can even remember, and have used yoga to help balance my body and mind from many daily activities.
I was blessed to spend the entire month of June at the beautiful Anamaya Resort and Retreat Center in Montezuma,
Costa Rica. I have always been very physically active and have found over the years that yoga has been a constant for helping
me relieve stress and has helped me find personal strength and balance. After intensely studying yoga, I realized how
important it was to me to teach. I have developed the skillset and gained the confidence needed to be able to share this gift
with others.
Living in the jungle for an entire month is an experience itself, now mix in organic plant based diets, 3-6 yoga classes
a day, lectures, anatomy, and do not forget meditation. I spent hours of time studying Ayurveda health and the entire
Chakra system in depth and then lived these experiences alongside 26 strangers. I now feel excited and ready to share this
knowledge and love of yoga with everyone around me.
To add to my fortune during my one-month stay at Anamaya, I also became certified in KAYS Kidding Around Yoga
"children's yoga", opening up many more doors and really allowing me to share my love of yoga with my children. Passing
along these skills at a young age to children is essential and will support growth throughout their little lives!
Over the summer I have been offering free classes to get my feet wet and also to complete my karma yoga hours for
my Yoga Alliance certification. I am planning to do weekly classes - mornings, afternoons, and evenings and will be looking for
feedback to help better arrange times that are convenient for my family and all the yogi’s in town looking for classes. My space
will be limited and sign up will be necessary on my website to save your mat. I am happy to announce the grand opening of
1life 1love Yoga Studio here in Elkford on September 1, 2015. Please check out my website www.1life1loveyoga.com or email
me at [email protected] for more details. Stop by and check it out ~ I look forward to our yoga journey.
Namaste.
