Jr. & Sr. High Discipleship Classes
Jr. High (7th-8th) Discipleship/Confirmation Class this year will walk
through the Old Testament as we continue on with The Journey Curriculum.
Here you will find lessons focusing on how God has a plan for all and how our
individual story fits into His plan as we look deeper into the Old Testament of
all the kings, prophets, and the Israelite people along with many others! Pastor
Josh will once again be teaching this course.
Sr. High (9th-12th) Your teachers this year will be Adam
and Brittany Paasch. They are passionate to share with
you about God's redemption and saving grace. The high
school years can be challenging for all and they're excited to
take this journey with you. They will also focus on the character of God and sharing their personal stories of how
God has been faithful in-spite of themselves.
Adult Discipleship Classes
Pastor Chuck’s Adult Discipleship class: True Spirituality For many Christians, the abundant life that we hear about on Sunday doesn't line up with our
experience Monday through Saturday. Many sincere believers find themselves
feeling stuck, frustrated, and weary. If you've ever felt like you were 'going
through the motions' without experiencing true joy or power, you are not alone.
There is good news- this was never God's desire for us! If you've ever sensed
that God has more in mind for you - but you're unsure how to experience it,
True Spirituality is for you. This powerful study removes the clutter and presents a clear, compelling, Biblical picture of a true disciple of Jesus. You will be
challenged...You will be encouraged...You will be stretched...You will be
CHANGED! This 12-week video series starts September, 13th. Study Books
will be available for a suggested donation of $8. Sign up in the foyer!
Bonnie Konsor’s Adult Discipleship class will be completing the
Old Testament study in Ezekiel and Daniel this year. The workbook for this
study is divided into three sections: 1) "What does the Bible Say?" 2) " What
does the Bible mean?" and 3) "What does the Bible mean to me?" Everyone is
welcome, if you would like to join us, please contact me at 320-761-0627, Let me
know if you need anything else. Sign up in the foyer - Bonnie Konsor
Reaching the Stranger Next Door
by Bruce Pinke
“Mission is no longer about crossing the oceans, jungles and deserts, but about crossing the
streets of the world’s cities.” Ray Bakke
We understand “that God so loves the world” but do we understand that the world He loves is
ever changing? Three major shifts are taking place in our world: 1. Urbanization; 2. Migration;
3. Cultural-religious diversity.
In 1800 London was the world’s largest city with a population of about one million. By 1900,
10% of the world’s population lived in urban centers. In 2000, 50% of the world’s population
lived in major cities and it is expected that by 2025, 75% of people will live in urban centers. In
2004 there were 19 cities of over 10 million population and in just one year that number
changed to 25 cities with populations over 10 million. In 2015 it is estimated that there are now
32 cities over 10 million.
Globalization has caused the world to shrink and mobility affects all the regions of the world.
Between 2000-2010 nine countries gained over 20 million migrants, with the USA gaining more
than 8 million. The USA accounts for over 23% of the world’s migrants. By 2010 the USA international migrant population reached an estimated 43 million, representing 13.5% of our total
population.
At this time it is estimated that there are 11,642 people groups in the world and of that number,
6,734 people groups are comprised of less than 2% evangelicals. In terms of global population,
these “unreached” peoples make up over four billion individuals. The majority of immigrants
(80-90%) are from these “unreached” peoples.
The USA is the most culturally pluralistic and religiously diverse nation of the world. By 2050
there will be no single racial majority in the USA. In America there are more Muslims, Hindus
and Buddhists than Lutherans, Presbyterians and Episcopalians combined.
The apostle Paul writes in Acts 17: “From one man God made every nation of men, that they
should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places
where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and find him, though he is not
far from each of us.”
It is my conviction that God permits, even orchestrates, the movement of peoples across the
globe in order to advance his kingdom. However, for the most part, the church in the West has
not caught the vision to reach the unreached peoples who have migrated to our communities.
This is our challenge - to reach, teach, equip and then send migrants across the world.
In next month’s issue we will look at the local Twin Cities scene to see God’s movement of peoples to our doorsteps.

DID YOU KNOW?
More Coffee
Fun Facts
Coffee is the world's second most traded commodity More than 500 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year, making
coffee the world’s most popular beverage. It is also the world’s most traded commodity, after crude oil.
The only places in North America where coffee is grown is in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
The world’s first coffee house opened in 1475 in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).
Coffee was imported from Arabia to Europe through Venice in the 1600s. While some monks urged Pope Clemente VIII to
outlaw the “Muslim” drink, the pope argued that the drink was so good that it would be a “sin” to let only “pagans drink
it.” Coffee thus began to spread across Europe.
When the first coffeehouse opened in England in 1652, women were prohibited from entering, other than to serve men.
A Belgian named George Washington invented instant coffee in 1906 in Guatemala.
A 2011 study showed that women who drink two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop
depression over a 10-year period than those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week.
There are two main species of the coffee plant used to commercially produce coffee: 1) Coffee arabica, which originated in
the Middle East, and 2) Coffea robusta, which originated in the Congo. Arabica trees produce the best quality coffee and
are the most widely cultivated (3/4 of the world’s coffee), while Robusta beans are hardier, contain 40-50% more caffeine,
and are used in many instant coffees.
The Dutch were the first Europeans to enter the coffee trade. They imported coffee plants from the Malabar Coast of India
to their colonies in what were then called the Dutch East Indies, or present-day Indonesia.
In 1715, Dutch coffee merchants presented the influential King of France, Louis XIV, with a coffee tree of his own. Millions and millions of trees have sprung from that single tree, thanks in part to Chevalier Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu, who
stole some cuttings from the tree and began cultivating coffee on Martinique in the Caribbean. Within 50 years, there were
over 20 million trees on Martinique and neighboring islands.
The smell of burning wood is the most recognizable odor in America. The smell of coffee is the second.
Coffee was banned three times in three different cultures: once in Mecca in the 16th century, once when Charles II in
Europe banned the drink in an attempt to quiet an ongoing revolution, and once when Frederick the Great banned coffee
in Germany in 1677 because he was concerned people were spending too much money on the drink.
The coffee industry employs 25 million people around the world.
Tea was more popular than coffee in America until King George the III’s Stamp Act of 1767 increased taxes. The result
was the Boston Tea Party, a rebellion in which Bostonians dumped the British East India tea cargos into a harbor. From
that point, coffee became America’s national drink and was emotionally linked with its revolution.
With more than four billion coffee trees, Brazil is the world’s leading producer of coffee. In fact, Brazil produces around
one third of the world’s coffee today. Vietnam, Indonesia, Colombia, and India round out the top five coffee-producing
countries.
The word “coffee” is from the Arabic qahwah, which is thought to have meant “wine.” The Turkish word for coffee,
kahve, is derived from the Arabic word and is related to the word café. Other scholars believe the word is from Kaffa, a
region in Ethiopia where coffee is thought to have originated.
During WWII, American soldiers were known as G.I. Joes. Because they drank large amounts of coffee, the drink soon
earned the popular nickname “a cup of Joe.”
Studies show that drinking coffee reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout.
