Dear Friends,
Could you imagine a world without plastic? It may sound
bizarre, but that’s the way it was not too long ago. It’s really only
since the 1940s that the plastics age commenced. As Susan Freinkel
writes in her book Plastic: A Toxic Love Story: “That’s when plastics truly
began infiltrating every pore of daily life, quietly entering our homes, our
cars, our clothes, our playthings, our workplaces, even our bodies.”
When our idea for Life Without Plastic materialized back in 2002, there were few
alternatives to plastics out there for everyday household items. Plastic had taken over.
Yet problems were emerging as increasing numbers of peer-reviewed scientific studies
began signalling the negative effects of certain plastics on the health of living beings. Also,
the adverse environmental effects of widespread plastic use were appearing around the globe
with plastic waste defiling cities and countrysides, clogging waterways and sewage systems,
and killing increasing numbers of our wildlife friends in the animal kingdom.
Life Without Plastic officially took flight in 2006 with glass baby bottles, stainless steel water bottles,
and stainless steel food containers - the main items we needed in our own home, but could not find
anywhere. Our product line has since expanded across the board to include all you see in this catalog
and more as we are constantly adding new products to our offerings.
Life Without Plastic is a family owned and operated business grounded on four pillar principles: health,
environment, integrity, community (see page 36 for more details on each of these). Expanding a little on the
latter principle, we derive great strength and inspiration from the many communities that punctuate our lives
and our business...our precious families, the wonderful community of loyal customers who we deeply respect
and from whom we constantly learn, the global community of anti-plastic activists, our magnificent team of LWP
staff, and of course our beloved dynamic home community of Wakefield, Quebec,
Canada. Throughout this catalog you will get to know some of our Wakefield
friends both big and small. We salute them, as we salute you, because it takes a
community to live without plastic. Or at least it’s a heckuva lot more fun doing it that
way.

Tiffins have been used for years and years in Asia to transport various types of food to
school or to work. Each compartment can be re-heated separately or used as a bowl.
They work really well for carrying rice, salad, veggies and sandwiches, as long as the
contents are not too liquidy (best to keep them upright if carrying a liquid). Great for

Keep your food hot and plastic-free on the go with these stainless steel hot meal containers. These thermal food containers feature
lids with the interior made of stainless steel, plus a silicone seal to ensure they are leak proof. Vacuum seal, watertight, and made

The natural urushi coating – which is derived from the Asian urushi tree and
applied using a time-tested technique – renders the box water-resistant, acidresistant and heat-resistant. Urushi is one of the only natural substances that
completely seals the wood. Contrary to oiled wood, urushi-lacquered wood
will not welcome bacteria into its pores. Our beautiful and classy bento boxes
are ideal for a small healthy lunch. They feature two levels with one movable
food divider (please note that the divider is not fixed to the container and can
be moved and used in either compartment). The boxes are lightweight and
can be transported easily as the parts hold together with the elastic provided.

Non-plastic durable scrub sponges are very hard
to find. Plastic has taken over. You may still be
able to find some steel wool ones but they rust
easily and are not extremely durable. We found
one that is not perfect, but it’s much better than
most. This scrub cloth is made of 85% copper
and 15% polyester threading. Yes, there is
plastic in it, but we decided to carry it because it
is such an improvement over what is out there.
The company tried natural fibres instead of polyester, but they just would not hold the copper in
place. They are durable and machine-washable
(up to 60 degrees Celsius). Cleans pots, pans,
ovens, ceramic cooktops, glass, stainless steel...

pleasure of meeting the innovative Austrian musician, engineer and glass
blower, Thomas Chochola. He is the founder and namesake behind TC
Energy Design products. After years of research and development in the
area of musical form composition and sacred geometry, he developed a
completely new approach to design, creating form from sound. He has
discovered specific forms which strengthen and stabilize biological vitality.
The shape of TC Energy Design products is based on principles of music
and the numerical Fibonacci sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 etc -- each

Wooden Toothbrushes
The plastic toothbrush market is HUGE and a large
majority of the plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills
or the oceans. Because toothbrushes need to be
replaced three or four times a year, all that plastic
really accumulates over a lifetime. We found the
perfect toothbrush. It is made of sustainably harvested
wood, in this case beechwood. Its handle is preserved
with vegetable oil. Its bristles are all natural. They
are made of pig hair. You might think “yuk, pig hair!”,
but worry not, the pig hair is completely sterilized
before being used to make the brushes. The German
manufacturer obtains the pig hair from China, which is
currently the only place in the world from where these
long-haired pig bristles can be sourced. The bristles
come from a domesticated race of long-haired pig
that is bred and raised for meat. When the animals
are harvested for the meat, the skin and bristles are
normally discarded because the meat industry has no
use for them. Here the bristles are being used for a
positive purpose, rather than simply being thrown out

What’s a strop, you ask? It’s a necessity when you are using a straight razor. After the razor has been honed - or sharpened for
maintenance - the strop is used to straighten and polish the blade, and should be used before every shave. This versatile German
strop is made of premium cowhide leather, with the reverse side of high quality tightly woven linen. One end has a stainless steel
hanging ring, and the other a stainless hand grip ring. The strop should be used with strop dressing (or grease), which is worked
into the leather side of the strop by hand. Draw the straight razor in the direction of what is called the blade’s “spine”, several

Quick Tips to Reduce Your Plastic Exposure and Waste
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)
• REFUSE disposable, single-use plastics - bags, bottles, utensils,
straws... don’t be part of the waste problem!
• Carry your own reusable bag, bottle, coffee mug, take-out food
container, utensils, straw...
• Store food and drink in glass or stainless steel ideally.
• Avoid plastic cling wraps, especially in the microwave. Alternatives
include waxed paper, paper towel, or a plate to cover food. If you
must use them, ensure the plastic does not touch the food. For deli
foods wrapped in plastic cling wrap - which is likely PVC #3 - slice off
a thin layer where the food was in contact with the plastic and store
in a container or use a non-PVC wrap.
• Avoid polycarbonate (#7) in its various forms - baby bottles, water
bottles, food containers, the large blue water storage containers often
used in office water coolers. Polycarbonate leaches bisphenol A. If
you must use such containers, avoid leaving them in the sun, heat
or cold, and transfer the food or liquid to a safer container as soon
as possible.
• Don’t heat, freeze or microwave foods in plastic containers. The
temperature extremes cause the plastic to degrade and leach
chemicals faster. Leaching also increases when plastic comes into
contact with oily or fatty foods, or when the plastic is scratched, worn,
cracked or sticky. If it says “microwave safe” that does not mean it
won’t leach chemicals.
• Buy in bulk to minimize packaging and improve health - less
canned, over-packaged & processed foods. Leave excess packaging
in the store.
• Seek out or opt for dry vs. wet detergents, soaps, shampoo bars
packaged in paper or cardboard.
• Take action! Contact companies & elected officials and urge them
to phase out dangerous plastics like polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene,
and polycarbonate - and especially in products designed for children.

ketchup, yogurt, margarine, syrup containers, straws, baby bottles, medicine bottles, storage containers
RECYCLING RATE: ~9% (used in brooms, brushes, ice scrapers, battery cables and casing, gardening tools
and accessories)
Polystyrene (PS)
styrofoam, disposable tableware & take-out containers, egg cartons, compact disc cases
SAFETY: AVOID - can leach styrene - toxin associated with potential brain, nervous system, blood, kidney,
stomach adverse effects
RECYCLING RATE: <1% (used in packaging, insulation, tableware)
Other
catch-all category for everything not in 1-6, polycarbonate (baby bottles, water bottles & large blue water
containers, canned food liners, juice, ketchup bottles), bio-based plastics, co-polyester, acrylic, plastic mixtures
SAFETY: AVOID POLYCARBONATE (PC) - can leach bisphenol A (BPA) - endocrine disruptor linked to
numerous adverse health effects including cancers and developmental problems
