Memphis Classic Chevy Club!!!
Life Before MCCC
BEFORE the Memphis Classic Chevy Club existed, racing in Memphis was alive and well! The 1960’s were
great in the Memphis area for classic Chevy lovers. Lakeland Dragstrip had opened and had become NHRA
sanctioned, which brought in NHRA regional events. Bill Taylor and Larry Coleman ran the Lakeland track
and it drew national caliber race cars. Lakeland booked major events and drew Funny Cars and Top Fuel
dragster events. Local racing businesses were established and growing.
NHRA had numerous classes for Tri-Five Chevys. There were 34 classes in Stock Eliminator! There were
classes for modified Tri-Fives. These cars had become very popular after Chevrolet put the V-8 in all new
‘55 Chevys. The ‘56 got increased horsepower ratings. Chevrolet advertised ‘the hot one is hotter’. Then in
‘57 the fuel injection 283hp and six other V-8 hp ratings appeared. NHRA Stock Eliminator rules allowed
cross breeding of parts to any passenger car. You could find Corvette engines, 4 speed Corvette transmissions in ‘57 passenger cars… even 4 speed truck
hydramatic in sedan deliveries! All these cars were
classed by factory shipping weight to factory hp
ratings. NHRA National records for each class set
the basis for handicap racing. If you went to the
drag races, you saw Tri-Five Chevys in action. LOTS
OF THEM. There were also plenty of them in the
parking lot!

Tri-Fives seemed to be everywhere. Prices ranged from
$1,000 to 1,200 for a show worthy BelAir Sport Coupe or
convertible. Or free to $100 to haul away a non-running
backyard find. Everyone wanted a new muscle car, but many
couldn’t handle the 36 month loan payments. There was no
60 month financing in those days! Gearheads realized they
could maybe afford a few hundres for a worn out ‘55, ‘56, or
‘57 Chevy project. Or maybe they couldn’t, but sometimes
bought one anyway.
Parts, rebuilt, new, and high performance were available
everywhere. NAPA stores had engine building machine
shops. Even Sears, JC Penney, and Western Auto had hot
rod parts. If you wanted a serious high performance engine,
Racing Head Service was the local place to go.
A cheap Tri-Five body, a rebuilt motor, a posi-traction gear,
headers, a Hurst shifter, and you had a drag car or a hot rod
cruiser… All to the tune of the ever expanding great rock &
Roll music.
Those were the days….

Bowtie Buzz Members of the Month
Bill & Linda Horne
Yes, this is the Memphis Classic Chevy Club! But we decided to honor
another member of the GM family. Check out Bill and Linda’s ‘71 Pontiac
LeMans. They got her in May of 2013 in Cabot, Arkansas. While she is a
work in progress, she has had a number of upgrades. You’ll find a power
front disc brake conversion, Vintage Air heat and a/c, rebuilt and recovered
seats, as well as a new headliner.
Bill and Linda are tremendous assets to our car
club and participate in nearly every event. He

Our MCCC Officers have worked hard to secure a new cruise-in location.
OUR NEW CRUISE-IN LOCATION IS AT
Café 4210 at 4210 ALTURIA at Egypt Central. Monik (pronounced Mo Neek) Williams, the new owner of
Café 4210, is so excited to have us and is bending over backward to make it a great experience! The
food is delicious and she, Cammie, and Tamika do a fabulous job!
The new location offers:
1) Limited access points
2) Large parking area to accommodate large numbers of cars
3) Most of the businesses are closed in the evenings, except Café 4210 (and Southern Vintage Co.,
ladies!), which will be open for us!
4) Café 4210 -Great menu, great prices, great food!
5) Gas station/convenience store next door
6) Lots of shade trees scattered throughout the lot
7) Bartlett Reserve police officers to monitor activity and address any issues that might come up
8) Beautiful setting, calm atmosphere, great gathering place!
We encourage you to support Monik’s business on other days, as well. It is only right that we support her
efforts!

Well, I said it last month, but it bears repeating:
It’s been a busy summer!
MCCC members and fans have had lots of opportunities to get their beauties out and show them off
thanks to the efforts of our Events Director, Billy Golden. People don’t realize how much time it takes to
arrange and schedule activities. He gets many, many phone calls asking if our club can come share our
treasures. It can be embarrassing when we have only a handful of participants show up to these events
and support our own club. We should be having a strong showing at each event. After all, we are

Points to Ponder
This was in last month’s issue, but it bears repeating:
For 10 years Memphis Classic Chevy Club met every Thursday night, weather permitting, of
course, at Stage Center Parking lot at Stage and Kirby Whitten. It was the ideal location.
Great traffic, lots of choices for eating, and such. People would happen by and would have to
stop to see all the cool classic cars. With several of the store fronts empty, we had more than
ample room to spread out. As the retail spaces became occupied, we began to have less and
less room. Then the drugstore was built on the corner, and that really took from our available
parking areas. And the riff raff started coming. They brought their jitneys and their poor
social behaviors. We started seeing them speed through the pedestrian filled lot. We saw
them do their smokie burnouts in the midst of other vehicles. We saw them ride on the outside of their cars, or on the bumpers, or hanging on to the side. We saw them put 10-15 in
the back of their trucks and ride through the lot. We heard their obnoxious obscenities regardless of who might have been around, including our children. We heard about the trash
that was left on the lot long after we had gone home. Everything had changed. No more did
we have a safe, clean, family friendly atmosphere. We knew it was a matter of time before we
would likely be invited to leave.
Instead, we chose to leave on our own terms and set up at another location at Joe’s Crab
Shack. It was nearly ideal. We were given a large area of the parking lot to be used exclusively
by us. We were provided a security guard to keep the riff raff from invading again. Once again
it was like is should have been: safe and family friendly. But people complained. “It’s too
small.” “You have to deal with Germantown Road traffic.” “There’s only one place to eat and
it’s expensive.” “There’s not enough shade.” “How can you call it the Bartlett Cruise In if it
isn’t in Bartlett?” And so on, and so on….
Another opportunity came about: to have an entire lot to ourselves, have meals designed and
cooked for us at very reasonable prices, security provided, no crazy 5 o’clock traffic to deal
with, and shade trees galore. Most of the businesses close at 5pm, except for the antique
store, which would give us abundant parking and room to grow. Nearly everything that had
been complained about was about to be resolved! Café 4210’s owner, Barry Holbrook,
welcomed us with open arms. The new location is a mere 5-7 minutes north of Stage and
Kirby Whitten. If you haven’t checked it out yet, what are ya waiting for??? You’ll see why
we’re so happy to be here! Every Thursday, weather permitting, from 5pm until 9pm.
