A wise woman once said, "Memories are the key
not to the past, but to the future." So, let me
start with a few reminiscences, not to dwell on
an idyllic past that by the way, never existed, but
to build a platform for the future.
When I joined Renata in 2002, the global
pharmaceutical landscape looked very different.
New blockbuster molecules were plenty, which
in turn fuelled growth of generics in the Subconti
nent where the intellectual property paradigm
was virtually non-existent.
Kaiser Kabir

The use of the Internet at the start of the new millennium was
also in its infancy resulting in information gaps and asymmetries.
In fact, many of us in Bangladesh at that time did not have a
comprehensive idea about potential blockbuster drugs being
developed by Big Pharma. Bangladeshi companies that took
initiatives to collect such information were able to grow rapidly
through new launches.

What a difference a few years make! Apart from the biologics
component, the global pharmaceutical pipeline is now largely
unexceptional. This means that the generics industry can no
longer rely on new products to be the principal driver of growth,
but must instead milk the existing portfolio to inch forward.
While this new operating environment is challenging, there are
still plenty of growth opportunities for companies that are able to
adjust to these changed circumstances. I believe that Renata is
small enough to be flexible, yet sufficiently strong to make the
required investments in people, knowledge creation, and capital
goods.
Bangladesh is by far our largest market and therefore it is here
where we must make most of the growth opportunities in the
retail and institutional segments. While the market continues to
exhibit double-digit growth, capturing this growth is becoming
increasingly expensive. Maintaining profitability in this
environment necessarily entails improvements in productivity
across all departments. To this end we must encourage openness,
critical thinking, outlandish ideas, and above all flat management
structures in practice.
Pharmaceutical exports rose 11.02
percent year-on-year to $26.7
million in July-October- (see pg. 3)
Moreover, traditional inter-department rivalries (e.g., sales
versus marketing, manufacturing versus QA, distribution versus
We have talked for many years about globalization to
expedite growth. Yet Renata, akin to other
Bangladeshi companies failed to make significant
inroads into new markets. In my analysis, this failure is
essentially due to the lack of a well-thought-out
export
strategy.
Specifically,
we
seriously
underestimated the importance of local knowledge
while developing export markets.
After dithering in the wilderness for several years, we now have the
makings of an intelligent globalization strategy that is nicheoriented and country specific. Much more work needs to be done,
but we seem to be on the right track as evidenced by certain highprofile dossier filings and institutional orders.
It goes without saying that to become a global company, our
manufacturing and quality standards across all sites have to be
aligned with the highest global benchmarks. Moreover, this is a
continuous process of upgrading.
We are fortunate to have a very successful Animal Health business
to contribute to our growth. It is of great satisfaction that this
business is no longer small. In fact, in terms of revenues, our AH
business is equivalent to the 13th largest pharmaceutical company
in Bangladesh. As the poultry and large animal numbers grow in
Bangladesh, we expect Animal Health to deliver commensurate
results.
I also place great hopes in our subsidiaries to deliver high growth.
Provided that debt-levels are kept low, the growing consumption of
poultry products shall ensure sustainability of Renata Agro. Purnava
has tremendous prospects in the non-medicated healthcare space
all over the world. Our latest subsidiary, Renata Oncology, having
both formulation and API capabilities is well poised to take
advantage of opportunities provided by TRIPS.
In essence, despite formidable cliffs, rewards lie ahead for us to
earn. Let us prepare for the future in our daily activities. To
paraphrase John C. Maxwell, "The future develops daily, not in a
day."
FROM THE DESK OF
HEAD OF HR
Another year has come to an end
and what a year it has been! Just
like any other year this past year
we have seen ups and downs and
among them, one of the saddest
incidents took place this year
which was the loss of our beloved
Founder Chairman Late Humayun
Kabir. However life goes on and
with renewed spirits this year we
look beyond the boundaries to
spread quality products across the
country and globally and take
Renata to a whole new level. This
past year there has been different
types of skill development
programs at Renata and that’s an
indication that we are investing in
our people to develop our future
leaders. Still, lots of exciting events
are yet to come in the next two
quarters. Hope the New Year will
bring new hopes, new business,
new
learning
and
new
achievements. Let us all prepare
ourselves for a great and exciting
journey ahead with Renata’s
values imprinted within us. As Roy
Disney has stated: “It’s not hard to
make decisions when you know
what your values are.”

participated in several job fairs; JobsBd Career Fest 2015 at RAOWA C

AIUB Job Fair 2015 and the Bdjobs Campus Career Festival at Jahangirnagar University.
The primary objective was to disseminate information about the available employment
opportunities in Renata Limited to the graduates eager to step into the job market.

Being there in those fairs Renata HRD has made a positive impression on job seekers
also branded the company within the industry. Potential job seekers communicated

SAD DEMISE:
We are deeply sad to share the news
that Md. Sakil Ahmed, Junior Officer
F working in our Bhairab Depot under
Distribution Department has passed
away by a Road Accident on October
6, 2015. He was only 21 years old.
Let us all pray for the eternal repose
of the departed soul, and for the
bereaved family, may they find the
strength to carry on in their time of
sorrow.
Mr. Md. Fuad Hasan Lotus
Lotus, Sr. Assistant Manager, HR
It has been three and a half years since I am with Renata Limited. Apart from my internship period, my total length of service is almost 6 years.
In my 1st two years of job life, I switched three jobs! So, this is actually the longest period of time that I am working in the same company.
c
I
used to be a reasonably good stu
student and like most of the parents who belong to the middle class of this country, my parents also wanted me
to be a Doctor or an Engineer; but for a very strange reason, I never wanted to be a Doctor or an Engineer! Though after joining
join
at Renata,
sometimess I think it would have not been a bad idea to be an Engineer or a Pharmacist because in this industry, employees from these two
backgrounds have great potential.
As I grow up, I am coming to realize that the main purpose of life is not to live for your ow
own
n rather to live for others and probably, this is one of
the main reasons that I am with Renata for quite some time. There are more than 270 pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh but
bu what
makes Renata different from the others is that 51% of Renata’s shar
shares are owned by a non-profit
profit organization named SAJIDA Foundation that
provides funding to Healthcare, Education, Alternative Energy, College of Nursing, Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, Centre
Cent for Elderly Care
initiatives etc. and by doing so Renata is actually contributing to the society in a very unique way. Unlike any other company, making profit has
never been the main concern of Renata rather it always cares for the betterment of society and the environment. By working at Renata I am
not only earning
rning my living but at the same time I am also indirectly contributing to my society as well as the environment and this feeling
feel
always gives me immense pleasure and a sense of accomplishment.
Being International
Mr. Shams-ud-Dowla, Sr. Officer, IBD
It is always a great feeling to interact with
other cultures and casts. In the era of
globalization adding to this feeling, a
touch of business can be interesting as
well as profitable. May be that is why the
idea of international business clicked in
the minds of business people. Well, I am
not certain about it, but this is how I feel
about international business. I feel like
superman with the power of my
company, the attention of my clients and
my inner creativity.
I don’t need to start talking about our
history, because without a glorious
history we couldn’t have come this far. Of
course we had that magical touch of
Pfizer Bangladesh, the multinational
feeling. Trust me when I say this, it is still
here. But the table has turned; we being
local can be called Multinational in some
other countries. Glory glory Renata Ltd.
Coming to our division, it is quite extra
ordinary to me thinking about the
progress we have made in recent times. I
must say I have seen a lot and learnt more
than I anticipated.
not only to get business out of it but also
to supply quality medicine. As I said, I feel
like Superman, yes, saving lives with our
quality products is our “Thing”.
Let’s get serious, so far this year we have
gone through a lot of business activities,
just when I am writing this article, I am
also thinking about the clients coming to
visit and audit our facilities next week.
Clients from Philippines and Pakistan are
keeping
eeping us very busy with preparations.
Adding to these we have been working on
UNICEF tenders with our products Co
CoPack and Zinc tablet and MNP
(Pushtikona). We are progressing well on
other fronts with the existing clients we
already have in our list such as Sri Lanka,
Kenya,
Philippines,
Cambodia,
Afghanistan,, Hong Kong, Myanmar and
other countries. Also, the good news is we
have already started our business in
Somalia and working on one or two other
new countries and clients which can be a
gold mine for business.
Before saying goodbye, I would like to say
that this is how we are wishing to see our
growth at the end of this year.
With the lead of our head of the division
Mr. S. M. Anisur Rahman we have been a
force to look at. We work, think, dream,
link and connect the world with Renata

NEW CHAIRMAN
-according to the Export Promotion Bureau. In
2014, the global pharmaceutical export market
was estimated to be worth more than $520
billion. Once Bangladesh graduates out of the LDC
status, it will no longer be able to enjoy the
preferential treatment. And, it is highly likely that
the country will graduate from the LDC group by
2024. The window of opportunity for Bangladesh
is, thus, only for about 10 years, according to the
Centre for Policy Dialogue, a think-tank.
Bangladesh's goal of growing
ing its pharmaceutical
sector by becoming a key medicine exporter to
frontier markets has challenges, according to the
BMI report. While there is a latent demand for
medicines in the LDCs, transforming these
opportunities into revenue growth will be
challenging
nging for the Bangladesh pharmaceutical
sector. Underdeveloped healthcare systems are
characteristic of LDCs such as Cambodia and
Pakistan, and will impinge upon access to
pharmaceuticals. Distribution of medical facilities
remains skewed towards the urban economic
centers, according to the analysis. The BMI said
the greatest commercial opportunities for generic
drugs will lie in emerging markets.
In addition, regulatory standards will become
stricter. This falls in line with the broader
development of the regulatory bodies in these
markets.

Stress Management
Everyone suffers from stress on some
level. No one is immune to it.
Sometimes stress levels are higher and
at other times they are considerably
lower. The price of stress in the
workplace has moved to the forefront
of concern for businesses. The causes
of stress stem from both on-the-job
and off-the-job factors. By learning
how to identify the stress factors in
one’s life and strategies to cope with
these factors one can take control of
his/her life. And with that objective in
