THE LONG CENTURY OF HORSE POWER, 1775-1925
Part 1: Mostly Books
This catalogue focuses on the horse and its uses from the mid-18th century into the
1920s--from the build-up of European cavalries into the decade when mechanized
vehicles finally outnumbered draft animals on American farms. The genres of publication
include: books of all kinds; trade, farm, and auction catalogues; tracts; government
reports; serials; stallion and other advertisements; programs; sheet music; etc. The items
are in several languages. Many of them are known in only in a few copies; some seem to
be unrecorded. Most of them have never been offered by us before. We've made a point
of identifying their previous ownership, to help show how this print category was
distributed.
Vernacular or specialized works such as these were once forgotten, overlooked, and
undervalued. Today, however, equestrian history is a growing field of scholarship, and
researchers in all disciplines are discovering how these primary materials inform and
enrich their areas of study, such as:
agricultural, economic, veterinary, military, and sport history  material culture 
print history (illustration, prescriptive literature, regional publishing)  the history of
taste, display, and performance  interspecies relationships  gender and cultural
studies  advertising and merchandising  building and urban history . . . and much
more.
In roughly chronological order, some of the themes found here are:
the war horse and its improvement  equine natural history  farriery and the
professionalism of veterinary medicine  vehicle design and manufacture  horse
taming and the phenomenon of "educated" horses  the development of American
breeds  the popularization of riding for women  the humane movement and the
parallel growth of pet-keeping and children's books  the international trade in horses
 scientific interest in animal locomotion and its depiction by photography  the
popularity of American harness racing  French horsemanship and its influence on the
U.S. cavalry  the growth and codification of elite equestrian sport  managing
without stable help  the efforts of the horse industry and the cavalry to preserve their
livelihoods . . .and throughout, of course, judging, buying, handling, transporting, doctoring, and controlling horses--keeping them going in order to keep the national economies,
and leisured life styles, going.
See items 349-363 for recent secondary sources. Indexes of authors and illustrators not in
the main alphabet, places of publication, pre-1861 works, and selected subjects are at the
end. Part 2 of The Long Century of Horse Power will focus on ephemera and images.
In the history of the horse is written our own history.

A REMARKABLE TROTTING FEAT BY AN "INDIAN PONY"
17.

phenomenon, Tom Thumb, who trotted 100 miles in 10 hours and 7 minutes, on

n.d. [1829]. 8p, 1 line ill. Disbound from Smeeton's Universal Pamphleteer [no. 15?]. **
The 1829 performances of Tom Thumb and Rattler made believers out of English
horsemen, who couldn't believe reports of 2:35 miles achieved by American trotters. The
light, compact cart drawn by Tom Thumb attracted almost as much attention as the horse
himself. Page 1 illustrates Tom Thumb; pp. 2-6 treat the match; p. 7 describes the cart; p. 8
gives an account of a 1750 carriage match. According to Youatt, Tom Thumb was
"reported to have been an Indian pony" "from beyond the Missouri."

DINNER FOR 13 ON THE ROAD
26.
Anonymous.
A newly invented travelling carriage.
[London]: Edwd.
Ravenscroft, printer, n.d. [mid-19th century]. One lithographed sheet, overall 11 x 11 1/4
inches, image 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches. Handling wear, but no tears. ** This appealing
lithograph shows a sturdy little house--complete with curtained sash windows, paneled
door, and door knocker--atop a carriage underbody. The caption describes in detail its 20x-9-foot drawing-and-sleeping room, heated and fully furnished "in the most recherche
style." There was also a 5-x-9-foot anteroom, but the phrase boasting a water closet has
been inked out. One January 26 a party of 13 dined in the car and "travelled 20 miles at the
rate of 6 miles an hour," no doubt enjoying the view from the 9 windows. The whole was
drawn by just two horses. Edward James Ravenscroft flourished 1854-1884. A very
unusual depiction of an early mobile home.

of a stable. The plates fold to ca. 4 x 6 1/2 inches and unfold to ca. 6 1/2 x 13 inches or
larger. They were lithographed by Laudi.
as is, $150.00
AN UNRECORDED HUMANE TRACT
28.
Anonymous. La Question du charretier du cheval considérée au point de vue
humanitaire économique et social. Verviers [Belgium]: L.-M. Léonard 1902. 28p, 1 ill. +
12p of line ills. Wrs. (lightly scraped; dogeared). In French. ** This humanitarian tract
was published after a new road was built in Verviers. It cost a million francs, but not one
centime was spent to ease and safeguard the horses as they labored in the mud; indeed, the
horse ambulance and humane society observer only annoyed the site engineers. Several
ideas for safety and comfort are outlined, such as an improved tip-cart to prevent falls, use
of a breastplate while collar sores heal, and a permanently attached feedbag with breathing
holes. A scarce survival. (Not in Mennessier or any source consulted)
$150.00

stamped. Rebacked with plain cloth (orig. backstrip mounted at rear); hinges reinforced
with tape; new endpapers. Fair: front cover soiled; pages soiled throughout, some marginal
tears. Torn blank leaf within the last poem, but this is a binding error; nothing is missing.
Ink presentation "Thomas Lewis Teesdale Reeve--A Christmas Present from his
Grandmamma and Auntie Flo, Dec. 25th 1883." ** Three long poems for children: "The
Little Sportsman's Alphabet," "The Farm Yard Hunt," and "A Country Holiday," with

she was humiliated to the point of fleeing to England in 1856. After publishing this book

hole through last few pages. Tears to frontispiece folds professionally mended.
Beautifully bound in later half leather, marbled boards. ** The author, a trainer, wrote this

others) and comments on their efficacy. He describes his inventions for safety features in
stalls, and for a "leaping bale" that features a windlass to raise or lower the rail (one plate
shows it in use, to free a horse that is caught across the rail). The large frontispiece by J.
Elliott depicts a horse in lungeing gear in a landscape, with its trainer. The plates are richly
printed. Overall a very handsome clean copy. (Wells 8044)
