Getting Away To Great Times
Mackinaw City is the little town at the "Tip o’ the Mitt," set like a gem on the Straits of
Mackinac. It is more than a great getaway. It is a discovery, and education, and an adventure.
The Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau hopes that this brochure will provide a glimpse of our
fascinating past and serve as a guide to the many things to do while here. You'll see that
all you do will be done amid a setting of great natural beauty. Inside you will find many
suggestions for places to stay, places to eat, shopping, and where to find the kind of adventures you and your family will most enjoy. Think of it as a tool for planning your vacation.
Mackinaw City provides a unique combination of historical interest and ever changing
modern attractions. It is as new and old as a budding leaf or the next breaking wave.
Welcome.
The Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau wishes to express acknowledgement and special
thanks to Chairman Bill Bertchinger, for his time and effort this past year.

Area Visitors Bureau to promote tourism in the Straits Area,
helping to build a vital and growing tourist industry that provides a stable commercial tax base for the area, enhancing the

for your past support, and look forward to your input and participation in the future.
National City Bank
A Friend of the Business Community Indeed!!
The Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau would like to offer a special “Thank You” to National City Bank. National
City Bank was the major sponsor of the 2008 51/50 Labor Day Festival in Mackinaw City, and provided a generous donation for the banners that decorated our street lamps in Mackinaw City this past summer. National City’s
continuing financial support of the Bureau is also recognized and very much appreciated.
The Village of Mackinaw City
A Strong and Ever-Present Supporter of Tourism
in Mackinaw
The Bureau would like to recognize our Village Manager,
Village President and Board of Trustees, and DPW and Fire
crews, for the support they have given the business community over many years. Without your support, the events
that bring business to our area year after year would not be
possible. Please accept our sincere thanks for a job well
done!
Great Lakes Energy…A Touchstone Energy Cooperative
A Memorable Grand Fireworks Spectacular Enjoyed by Thousands…
We thank you for your sponsorship of the Grand Fireworks Extravaganza which capped the 51/50 Labor Day Festival in 2008. The event marked the first time that our community has offered a fireworks display on Labor Day
weekend, and the show was visible to thousands of visitors in St. Ignace and Mackinac Island as well. Your financial support helped to make this event a very special occasion.

There's a spot in the woods just south of Mackinaw
City where lumberjacks engage in manly competition.
It is a lovely place among the pines close to the Lake
Huron shore. But these men aren't standing around
admiring the beauty. To the cheers of the crowd, they
match skills to win the title, "Bull of the Woods."
The Jack Pine Lumberjack Show celebrates the history of Northern Michigan logging by bringing it to
life. The audience is divided into two rival logging
camps, giving them the opportunity to cheer on their
lumberjacks as they compete in the traditional events
of log rolling, pole climbing, axe throwing, crosscut
sawing, and chopping. The result is exciting, often
humorous, and highly entertaining.
The Show is a delight for all ages, designed for entire
families to enjoy together. It is no passive entertainment. It is an outdoor activity in which the audience
is actively engaged. Children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents participate enthusiastically.
Dan McDonough is the founder and producer of the Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows. A nine time
logrolling world champion, Dan serves as the show's M.C. And, man, does he know how to put
on a show!
The Jack Pine Lumberjack
Show is located 1.5 miles
south of Mackinaw City on the
Lake Huron side of U.S. 23.
An enjoyable option is to take
the Mackinaw Trolley Company's Lumberjack/Sunset
Tour which crosses the Mackinac Bridge at sunset after the
Show's conclusion.

The oldest and longest operating ferry line on the Straits of
Mackinac, Arnold Transit was founded by George T. Arnold and L. B.
Coats and was originally named the Arnold & Coats Ferry Line.
Arnold bought out his partners in 1890, incorporated, and bought
more steamers adding to his fleet.
To reach Mackinac Island, more people choose the Arnold
Line because only the Arnold Line offers you...
These steamers mirrored the magnificent passenger boats sailing
out of Detroit, Chicago and Buffalo, New York. With the trip taking
nearly an hour, passengers strolled up and down the gleaming
staircases and decks, lounged on cane-bottom deck chairs and
peered through observation windows at the big steam engines at
work.
George Arnold died in 1921 and after his wife Susan passed a few
years later the company was bought out and held together by young
accountant Otto Lang and future U.S. Senator and attorney Prentiss
M. Brown. They guided the company through times of boom and
depression and World War II. Eighty years later, Prentiss Brown’s
sons, daughters and grandchildren still own and operate this grand
old passenger line.
...a fast, smooth, quiet ride with luxurious cabins,
exciting open deck seating and a family-friendly policy!
Post-World War II, the Arnold Line faced its first major
competition. Determined to remain the leader, Lang and Brown
replaced their labor intensive steamers with diesel-powered boats,
operated by five people. By 1963, Arnold Line had seven of these
smaller, more efficient boats with a crossing time of 30 -35
minutes.
Today, responding to the increasing demand of faster and smoother
boats, the Arnold Line introduced the first passenger-carrying
catamaran ferries to the Great Lakes. These twin-hulled, triple-deck
ferries provide the fastest, smoothest and most comfortable ride on
the straits. For a more complete history and closer look at the line’s
fleet of catamarans, traditional ferries and freight boats go to
www.arnoldline.com and learn more about 130 year old business
rich in tradition.

The Best Seats in History: For close to three centuries,
the Straits of Mackinac has been a vital nautical
thoroughfare, providing passage between Lakes Huron
and Michigan. Lighthouses were built to protect
mariners from dangerous shoals and reefs. Each has a
story to tell.
For instance, Waugoshance Light, built in 1851, is
encased in iron plates; and its “birdcage” lantern is quite
rare among surviving structures.
Another icon of the Great Lakes is Bois Blanc Light. It
was built in 1829 – just the second built in all of Lake
Huron. The structure seen today is the third lighthouse
on the site.
See these and other lights on one of Shepler’s
Lighthouse Cruises. Each is three hours long and
narrated by the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers
Association.
Cruises pass directly under the Mackinac Bridge. Bring
your camera! Ships cruise in fairly close and circle each
lighthouse, where possible.
Cruises depart from Shepler’s Mackinaw City Dock.
Reserve your seat in history by calling 800-828-6157 or
online at sheplersferry.com.
Board the barrier-free main decks of a Star Line
Hydro-Jet Ferry and enjoy a panoramic view of the
area from the cozy comfort of our glass enclosed
cabins or our open air observation decks. Sit, back
relax and watch as Star Line’s unique hydro-jets
produce their 35 foot rooster tail spray. Begin your
Island adventure from Star Line’s Mackinaw City
dock or one of our two convenient St. Ignace
locations.
Star Line offers FREE shuttle service to area hotels,
motels and campgrounds. Why not take the boat
everyone else is watching.

Lovely surroundings add to the enjoyment of all we do.
Mackinaw City offers an abundance of family friendly
activities amid an area where nature can be seen at its
most magnificent.
The Straits of Mackinac itself is spectacular, its deep
blue waters dotted with islands. It is a highway between
two Great Lakes with green wilderness on both sides,
spanned by a great bridge linking two peninsulas.
There are many ways to actively enjoy the Straits. Visit
Colonial Michilimackinac, the restored fort which
guards the narrow waters. Costumed re-enactors provide a glimpse of bygone military life while their civilian counterparts demonstrate the arts and crafts of colonial times.
The area boasts twenty-two lighthouses, some
historic, some still in the business of protecting
sailors from harm. A variety of lighthouse
cruises are available and some you can reach just by walking.
Mackinac Island is still Queen of the Straits. Take a
ferry to experience the Island's pristine beauty by
carriage, bike, horseback, or afoot. Try to attend the
Lilac Festival in early June or the "Star Spangled
Fourth of July" celebration.
The Mackinac Bridge is more than just a breathtaking sight. You can actively experience it. In May,
runners race the bridge while bicyclists get their
chance in June. And everyone is invited to participate in the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk.
There's never a loss for things to do. Parasail high
above the waters and look the "Mighty Mac" straight
in the eye. Go to an indoor or outdoor waterpark.
Watch the yacht races or attend the Ironworkers
Festival.
Or you could shop. Even this will be done in lovely
surroundings. The Mackinaw Crossings pedestrian
mall is full of flowerbeds, fountains, and fascinating
Victorian architecture. Central Avenue, Mackinaw's
other main shopping district, is charmingly landscaped and there are flowers everywhere.
So much to see, so much to do... and so much
beauty!

City’s historic shopping district has been a gathering place for millions of visitors over the years. Take a stroll down the red brick sidewalks and enjoy the comfort of a hometown setting.
Mackinaw City offers 4 blocks of exceptional shopping. Fudge
shops anchor this fantasy land of stores and boutiques. Browse

shops. Satisfy your quest for lore at bookstores and coffee
shops on Central
Avenue. Of
course the appropriate apparel is
necessary, and

Sometimes simple pleasures are best. Few things in life are more satisfying
than a sunshiny day and a stroll beside sparkling blue waters while seabirds
soar and wheel. We'd like to share our favorite walk with you.
Begin at Conkling Heritage Park, named for Edgar Conkling, founder of Mackinaw City. The park consists of a broad marina green with a bandshell where
free concerts are held throughout the warmer months. Adjoining the park are
two marinas: The Mackinaw City Municipal Marina and the brand new, 125
slip, State Dock Harbor. Take a moment to admire the boats!
Conkling Park is the site of many events throughout the year, including two large arts and crafts shows and an annual kite festival. It is the best place to watch our mammoth Fourth of July fireworks display.
After fully perusing the park's pleasures, proceed north on S. Huron Street, keeping the Straits' waters on your
right until you arrive at Alexander Henry Park. It is an amazing place.
The park is dominated by the beautifully restored Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. It contains 1700 feet of handicapped accessible walkway. There are picnic tables and barbeque grills.
Walk down to the beach and gaze at the majestic Mackinac Bridge. Ahead is the deep green of the Upper Peninsula,
and a little to your right is renowned Mackinac Island. To your left is the fully restored old fort, now home to historic Colonial Michilimackinac. The fort dominated the Straits from 1712-1781. You are standing next to what was
once the central trading post of a vast region.
Where to go next? Why not just retrace your steps. It will be just as beautiful the second time around.
