Donna is a Bergie’s owner from the past – Donna Bergman, who sold the business a few years ago. Bergie’s Steakhouse will not be neglected anymore, says new owner Renee McAlonis. Just a few months ago, McAlonis purchased the business and locals are already beginning to take notice. “She came in (to Bergie’s) the other day, and I almost had to bow down to her,” said McAlonis. “I want to take it back to where it was over five years ago, where it was standing room only.” “We’re cleaning up, installing new lights, doing upgrades,” said McAlonis. “We’ve got an LED light around the bar, new neon signs from distributors, we’re upgrading some of the kitchen stuff, and hoping to upgrade the patio furniture in time for summer.” 10 Letter From Publisher and Editor And the new owner’s efforts are already paying off. Bergie’s’ crowds are growing. It’s a little unusual coming from the brand new owner of a restaurant/bar, but McAlonis would actually like to take Bergie’s back in time. And it’s all because of one lady. 12 Bergie’s Steakhouse “Everybody’s been saying, ‘It’s like when Donna had it,’ said McAlonis. “Everybody’s so happy with what we’re doing.” Bergie’s now has some social networking: a website, Twitter, Instagram, and McAlonis is getting the bar and restaurant noticed. Renee McAlonis was an officer with the L.A. Police Department for almost 20 years. The large number of local residents in law enforcement is one reason she chose a Santa Clarita location. “Santa Clarita has a huge cop community,” said McAlonis, who believes it adds to the safety features of the establishment. “We were looking at businesses, doing a lot of research for about three months. We went into a lot of locations in about a 30-mile radius.” Then she took the plunge, acknowledging that buying a bar was definitely a new direction, career-wise. “It was scary and I’ve learned a lot, but my dad’s given me a lot of advice,” she said. “He’s been out here a few times helping me out.” 16 CHS cArt aRt Award McAlonis’ uncles all owned bars and her father owned a liquor store in Cleveland, Ohio. Also, they were HUGE Cleveland Indians fans. And because her family moved to the Los Angeles area in the early ‘80s, they are HUGE Dodgers fans. Which is another big draw at Bergie’s. 17 Nature Center Open House continued on page 14 12 www.canyoncountrymagazine.com April 2015 18 Wedding Section Wedding Resources Rainbow Florist Rainbow Florist Designers By Martha Michael Adding Color to the Community Makeup Tips A bride can always look to her florist to provide her with “something blue,” and now there’s a Canyon Country flower designer who can also cover the need for “something new.” Rainbow Florist Designers opened in February near Carl’s Jr., next to DW Cookie Company in the El Segundo Shopping Center. She knows how to resonate with the adolescents who perform (page 40). It brought back some of the fondest memories of my life – my high school years spent doing theatre, including “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Hello, Dolly” and “Oklahoma” (pictured). I had a great conversation with new owner of Bergie’s, Renee McAlonis, which you can read about on page 12. We will watch in wonder at the new direction the favorite hangout takes in the future. There is the music, family members, the smell of flowers, and the dresses … ahhhh, the dresses. The bridal gown is always special, sometimes straight out of a fairytale, but brides can succumb to the same habit every woman faces, no matter what occasion: choosing the same style of dress as every other young woman in her peer group. Things are changing, however, according to local dressmaker, Eugenia Mendez. There has been a shift in bridal trends. “I’m kind of glad they’re getting away from the strapless dress,” said Eugenia. “It’s getting a little old. Now they are more off-the-shoulder.” are) mostly fitted, very few ask for full dresses. The girls look so nice now, they want to show their figures.” Then there is the bridesmaid dress. According to Eugenia, current trends call for short dresses with fitted bodices and full, pleated or gathered skirts with sashes. Often the topic of jokes, there are so few stories of styles that bridesmaids actually wear later to other dressy occasions. Eugenia has a suggestion. “Because it’s spring, they like the soft colors. They think it looks very romantic,” she said. “But it’s always the best when it’s black, because they can use the dress again. When it’s black you have happy bridesmaids.” Style choices for brides are affected by a lot of cultural cues, not the least of which is royal fashion. “With the wedding of Princess Kate came the sleeves and the neck,” said Eugenia. “(Bridal gowns Black Hair Care ONYX HAIR STUDIO 661-251-6699 18333 Dolan Way Suite 108, Canyon Country Open Tuesday through Saturday 8am to 10 pm Sunday and Monday by Appointment only Available to serve you Roberta (317-724-6493) and Justine (818-633-9994) 20% Off for First Time Clients with this ad 20 www.canyoncountrymagazine.com April 2015 Custom Couture Wedding Gouns Formal Wear & Ready to Wear Eugenia Designer • Stylist • Consultant Now Offering Eco-Friendly Fabrics Custom Cakes For All Occasions • Weddings • Mother’s Day • Graduation • Birthdays • Anniversaries 22936 LYONS AVE, NEWHALL 661-259-0352 For voting me BEST DJ 2 years in a row! If you are using a brand from Sephora or a department store cosmetic counter, the store will gladly color match you for free. Getting the perfect shade can sometimes require using a mixture of two shades. If you are using a drug store brand, most chain drugstores will let you return or exchange it if you get the wrong color. It’s always best to match your face to your chest color, taking extra care to blend a little down your neck so there isn’t an orange line along the base of your chin. it really helps to illuminate the skin, fill in pores, and most of all, helps keep your foundation from melting or sliding down your face during the day. You will love the extra long wearing this tip will give you. 3. Blend, blend, blend!! It’s always best to use a damp beauty blender or a brush when blending your foundation, rather than your fingers. Blend in a circular motion. Blend, blend, then blend some more. When you think you are done blending, blend some more. This works the foundation into the skin and creates a flawless look. Some great foundation flat head blending brushes are the F80 from Sigma ($24 at SigmaBeauty. com) or the G6 from Morphe ($13.95 at MorpheBushes.com). 2. Apply loose powder BEFORE your foundation. I know it sounds strange, but (661) 269-LAW1 3807 W. Dr. Rachael Ostrom Sachar took me with her and her assistant on several “ranch calls.” We had to get an early start (6:30 a.m.), because many of the appointments had to be completed before the owners went to work. We mainly saw horses that day, however Dr. Rachael sees all kinds of large animals. She told me about her busy adventure the day before, when a sheep owner from Antelope Valley called her for an emergency. She had so little time available that Dr. Rachael and her assistant had to meet the rancher under the freeway continued on page 26 DOGGIE DEN PAW SPA - FOUR PAWS ONLY! It was surprising how much time Dr. Rachael gave herself between appointments and how she easily familiarized herself with the animals’ ailments. I also didn’t expect that her schedule would vary so much – some of her days are extremely long, going well into night, and on other workdays she is through in the early afternoon. I assisted her in stitching up a horse’s wound and I personally injected shots into the necks of a few horses. I used a stethoscope to hear the animals’ gastrointestinal sounds and their breathing and heartbeats. I also took horses’ heart rates. It gave me a good idea what veterinary work is like, because now I understand the daily patterns. I also see that veterinary medicine has some routine to it, but the calls can vary. He opened a butcher shop in Los Angeles, and he also built some small houses, which he rented out for income. Joseph married Minnie Warmuth, pictured here on their wedding day, December 4, 1912. Three years later, they purchased 120 acres in Sand Canyon, where they settled in 1920. He had also been a butcher in New York, where they lived before moving to California. Joseph’s brother, Kasper, was a wood shop teacher who bought 80 acres of property in Sand Canyon to the west of his brother. The children attended Sulphur Springs School, where Florence Mitchell, daughter-in-law of Canyon Country’s earliest pioneers, taught them from first through eighth grades in a one-room schoolhouse. The Warmuths walked two miles to grammar school, but rode the bus 22 miles each way for secondary school at San Fernando High School. For many bands the first glimmer in the spotlight and first step toward stardom happens innocently, during local gigs played in front of friends and family at clubs, schools and other public venues. For the second consecutive year, College of the Canyons is helping to provide that opportunity to local musicians. On May 31, five musical acts will compete — for the adoration of an eager crowd and a variety of music equipment and cash prizes — during the second annual College of the Canyons “Battle of the Bands” at the Canyon Country campus. The campus’ Carl A. Rasmussen Amphitheater will once again rock-androll as these talented musicians will have their original songs heard, and judged, by a panel of industry professionals charged with judging the event and declaring a winner. “We are so excited to once again be hosting this familyfriendly event for our local music lovers,” said Dr. Ryan Theule, vice president of the Canyon Country campus & grants development at the college. “After the success of last year’s event, we wanted to continue the tradition to try and see which local band could best rock the hills surrounding the Canyon Country campus.” Local bands looking to secure a spot at the show are asked to apply with event partner Keyboard Galleria At last year’s inaugural “Battle of the Bands” event at the COC Canyon Country campus more than 350 local music fans took in the friendly competition and looked on as the high-energy five-piece ensemble, Out of the Ashes, took home the top $500 cash prize. 38 by the April 30 contest deadline. From there, Keyboard Galleria manager Jason McKay and his staff are forced to make some rather tough choices in order to decide who gets to perform. their favorite and help select a winner. A wide variety of food trucks from around the region will also be on hand, ready to serve food, sweets and frozen treats to the audience. “We take everything into consideration,” McKay said. “It takes a whole package – of talent and performance – to make the cut.” For families in attendance, students from the COC Associated Student Government (ASG) will host a play area dedicated to children’s activities. At last year’s inaugural Battle of the Bands event more than 350 local music fans took in the friendly competition and looked on as the high-energy five-piece ensemble, Out of the Ashes, took home the top prize. In addition to the $500 cash award, the band had its music played live over the airwaves on KHTS-AM 1220. Of the top three bands at last year’s competition, each group had at least one member with some affiliation to the college. The Battle of the Bands event isn’t just limited to the musical competition — there’s a little something for everyone. A classic car show featuring pre-1972 hot rods dating back to the 1960s will be showcased at the event, with fans able to vote on www.canyoncountrymagazine.com April 2015 Free Battle of the Bands T-shirts will be handed out to the first 500 guests. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and settle in around the amphitheater for the day. The 2015 Battle of the Bands competition will be held from 12 Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at the COC Canyon Country campus. This event is being sponsored by the COC Associated Student Government, Keyboard Galleria, KHTSAM 1220 and Remo Inc. Prucha. “They are extremely talented and are having a great time, which the audience is invited to share.” The cast has been rehearsing since mid-January. “Shrek: the Musical” is on stage for three nights this month, allowing students to play familiar characters like “Donkey,” “Fiona” and “Lord Farquaad,” and for audiences to hear songs like “Donkey Pot Pie” and “When Words Fail.” “I chose ‘Shrek’ because the rights recently became available and the students were very enthusiastic about this piece,” said Golden Valley High School Theatre Director Janie Prucha. “The story was a happy memory from their childhood, as well as being really funny with some great music!” The cast consists of students from ninth through twelfth grades and stars Matt Farrand as “Shrek,” Samantha Gebers as “Fiona,” Eriel Brown as “Donkey,” and Ryan Watson as “Lord Farquaad.” “The strongest part of the performance is the sense of humor and fun that the students exhibit,” said Ms. “We are extremely fortunate to have a pit band made of Golden Valley Band students under the direction of our band director, Roger Brooks. Vocal direction was provided by our choir director, Kerry Riccio, and choreography by Donna Herbst,” said Ms. Prucha. “The message is great too – ‘Let your freak flag fly’ – be proud of your uniqueness – see past the surface and celebrate your differences.” Ms. Prucha has a knack for choosing productions with which teens can connect, in the same way she jumped at the opportunity to bring theatre kids a show with everyone’s favorite ogre. She has demonstrated her skills for more than a decade, as Golden Valley’s theatre director since the school opened in 2004. The students have performed “Beauty and the Beast,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Fame,” “Footloose,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “A Chorus Line,” “The Wiz,” and continued on page 42 40 www.canyoncountrymagazine.com April 2015 General and Surgical Dermatology spring into beauty... Ms. Prucha has also directed plays such as “The Crucible,” “The Odd Couple” and “Philadelphia Story.” “Although I have enjoyed them all, some of the highlights have been: “Wedding Singer,” because it was so funny and well-received; “Beauty and the Beast,” because the production was our most ambitious; and “A Chorus Line,” because it was an alumni summer show, in which former students came back to perform in the Golden Valley Theatre when it opened,” Ms. Prucha said. As a high school level director, her biggest challenge is finding large cast shows which feature lots of girls and are appropriate for high school, and also recruiting boys to participate. Once cast, students are in for a ride. “They learn to develop characters and stay in the moment onstage throughout the rehearsal process,” said the theatre teacher. “Students usually come into Rehearsing for “Shrek: the Musical” (L to R): Tess Gebers, Samantha Gebers and Star Austria rehearsals able to move well and sing. Skills that are new to them include stage combat, which they enjoy learning, improvisation, which is a continuing challenge, and dialects.” Former Golden Valley student actors are in theatre departments all over California, in Chicago, New York, Boston and in the Midwest. “The ones that have graduated work in theme parks, regional theatre, independent films, and some are pursuing graduate degrees and teaching credentials,” said Ms. Prucha. “A few have been invited to continue their training internationally in Scotland and Italy.” Ms. Prucha teaches three beginning theatre classes, one children’s theatre class and the advanced theatre class, which is responsible for the main stage productions. The stagecraft class provides the running crews for the shows. “We, at Golden Valley, are proud of the collaborative spirit of our performing arts department, who work together to put on a spring musical every year and schedule our programs to make it possible for our students to participate in band, choir and theatre at the same time,” said Ms. Prucha. “Together, with the support of our administration, this cooperation makes a big event like ‘Shrek: the Musical’ possible.” “Shrek: the Musical” runs April 29, 30 and May 1 at the Golden Valley Theatre at 7 p.m. Golden Valley High School is located at 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway in Santa Clarita. Tickets are available at the Golden Valley ASB office for $12 pre-sale and $15 at the door. San Fernando Valley Vascular Group recently opened a permanent office on Valencia Blvd. for patients needing such treatment as angioplasty, stent grafting and aneurysm repair. The endovascular surgery offered by the medical group means that costly, invasive surgery for a number of medical conditions is no longer necessary. The three board certified surgeons at San Fernando Valley Vascular Group – Dr. Fuad Rafidi, Dr. Zahi Nassoura and Dr. Wesley Fung – have privileges at a number of Southland hospitals. Equipped with the expertise of seasoned vascular surgeons, two of the physicians have been in practice for 25 years and one of the doctors specializes in wound care. While procedures like stenting and angioplasty used to take place when a patient was admitted to a hospital, endovascular treatment can be performed at San Fernando Valley Vascular Group’s Surgery Center. While the practice sees patients undergoing dialysis and those with such serious conditions as peripheral artery disease, the vascular surgeons also perform sclerotherapy for spider veins, and vein ablation for individuals who suffer from varicose veins. “We take most insurance – we do take HMOs, PPOs and Medicare. Patients should check with our office regarding insurance,” said Betsy Summers, marketing director at San Fernando Valley Vascular Group. The medical group has four offices: Valencia, West Hills, Tarzana, and Burbank, with ultrasound technicians in each of the offices, providing immediate results for the patient. Same day appointments are available, a service that is highly beneficial for the patient and the referring physician. “Sending someone to the ER allows for unnecessary wait times, and more out-of-pocket expenses for the patient,” said Summers. San Fernando Valley Vascular Group opened its practice in Santa Clarita because the doctors recognized a need that their expertise could offer to patients in the community. San Fernando Valley Vascular Group is located at 23823 Valencia Blvd., Suite 215 in Valencia.
