Meetings, Meetings, Meetings!
The Commodore’s Office has been renamed and repurposed. It
is now known as the Commodores’ Conference Room and is
available for meetings of up to six people. The room has been
refurnished at no cost to the club with a small round table
and six chairs, as well as a small corner desk and bookcase.
There is a wall-mounted television monitor that can be used for
presentations. Stop by and admire the spectacular photographic
art of Avalon created by Jeff Granbery. He used a “simplify”
process that allowed him to eliminate detail and then add
it back selectively. The art is wonderful and compliments
the room’s beautiful view of Yachtsmen’s Cove.
The Commodores’ Conference Room is already used
frequently for meetings. The flag officers still use it as our
office, so we may walk into a meeting in progress from time
to time to retrieve something. So far, we have walked in
on Bahia Sail Racing Association, Finance, Junior Safety,
Newport Ocean Sailing Association, Sail Fleet, Ship’s Store
and staff meetings.
You can make a reservation to use the room through the
front office. While one of us might walk in on your meeting,
we guarantee to not stay long. I am so pleased with this
greatly improved utilization of space and I know members
will use and enjoy it!

REGULAR FLAG
Fraser and Debby were referred to us by Director Sandy Mills. They
have a 35’ Tartan, similar to Sandy’s, purchased last December. Fraser
is a senior systems analyst with Computer Cost Control, Inc., in Irvine
– CCC provides lasers for various surgical procedures. They reside in
Tustin and have a son and daughter, ages 23 and 19. Sailing since 1987,
the Fishers enjoy using their boat locally and also like chartering in the
Caribbean.
Toby and Dolores Jackson
CORINTHIAN MEMBER
After attending the New Member Wine and Cheese event in April,
Toby and Dolores decided to join BCYC. Toby is the NOSA webmaster
and has been actively involved in BCYC Race Committee work for the
past year. He is a director for Signal U.S. The Jacksons have two young
children, ages 5 years and 7 months, and reside in Aliso Viejo. They look
forward to giving their children the opportunity to grow up in a yacht
club environment.

CORINTHIAN MEMBER
Barbara was referred to BCYC by Barry and Ann O’Neil,
whom she has known for more than 20 years. She is
owner of Kelley Associates, Inc., an accounting firm in
Lake Forest. Barbara is the mother of two daughters,
ages 19 and 22, and resides in Irvine. Having taken
sailing lessons at Orange Coast College for several years, she is looking
forward to utilizing her sailing skills at BCYC.

Summer is Here The Club is Ready
The swimming pool is open, available for use by all club members. New tables,
chairs and chaise lounges will make your pool time even more enjoyable.
Hopefully, the sun will join us for some warm days.
As you walk around the club you will see the flower beds filled with annual
color. Palms that were in the large pots have been replaced with beautiful
succulent plants. Check out the planting – it may give you some ideas for your
home garden.
The multi-purpose room renovation is complete, due to the combined efforts of
BCYC staff and licensed contractors. The “wall of mirrors” and cushioned floor
change this area completely. Our superb maintenance staff completed drywall
and electrical upgrades, with the help of an electrician. The old washing machine
and dryer have been removed and interior painting completed. Cupboards and
hooks for hanging jackets and backpacks are in place. Fans will be installed to
help cool this space on warm days during hot workouts!
The room is intended to be a deluxe multi-purpose room, available for our
junior program, tap classes, seminars and meetings. Please stop by and take a
look at this amazing upgrade.

Commodore’s Cruise - 2013
Bring on the Fireworks!
Did you get a chance to see the Balboa Island Parade?
BCYC junior sailors did a great job representing our
club and junior sailing program. Thank you to Connor
Chung, Alex Ivory, Tyler Jones, Jake Mayol, Max Mayol
and Derek Pickell for all your BCYC spirit! A BCYC
sabot was towed down Marine Avenue, filled with these
junior sailors wearing matching BCYC shirts, passing out
candy and having a great time. It was very cool to hear
the parade announcers say several times: “BCYC Junior
Sailing Program, the best in the harbor.” A special shout
out to Lisa Mayol and Sarah Pickell for making this all
come together – great work! (see pictures on page four)
We know that BCYC is the friendliest club on the
bay, but we are also the strongest relative to available
memberships. It’s a rare occasion when BCYC has a Regular
Flag membership available from a current member who,
unfortunately, finds it necessary to sell their membership.
When available, they sell fast. This speaks volumes about
our strength as a yacht club, our members and valuable
employees. The Corinthian Membership is a perfect
way for your friends to try BCYC and get to know other
members before becoming a Regular Flag member. We
feel once they experience the land and water activities,
plus the friendship
and the dining

We just returned from Karen Winnett’s Commodore’s
Cruise, from Boston to Montreal, with stops at Bar
Harbor, Halifax, Sydney and Quebec City. Except
for Boston, we had never been to any of these places,
which really made the trip fun. But the best part of the
cruise was spending time with the BCYC members and
getting to know all of them better. We had a wonderful
time and are now counting down the days to next year’s
cruise.
Please join Mary and me on the 2013 BCYC Commodore’s
Cruise on the Danube River, Sept. 22-Oct. 2. We will
start with three days of touring one of our favorite
cities, Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Prague
straddles the Vitava River and has a ton of history and
old-world charm with the Charles Bridge, Hradcany
Castle, Astronomical Clock, old town square, museums,
churches and much more.
Day four, we will take a bus to Nuremberg to board
a brand new river barge, built in 2011. Although
Nuremberg suffered extensive damage during World
War II, the town has been restored to its original style
with many Gothic churches and elegant houses. We
depart Nuremburg on day five and begin our cruise
on the historic Danube River. Mary and I have never
been on the Danube, so this will be a thrill to see this
incredibly beautiful river, which flows through oldworld Europe. Stops include Regensburg, Germany,
Passau-Linz and Melk, Austria. Next up is an excursion
to Salzburg, Austria, birthplace of Mozart, and perhaps
the most beautiful small city in the world. We arrive in
Vienna during the evening of day eight and will spend
day nine waltzing through this classic city visiting the
Hofburg Palace, Vienna Opera House, Ring Boulevard
and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, to name just a few of the
sights. Our cruise will end in Budapest, Hungary, which
spans the banks of the Danube and is Eastern Europe’s
liveliest and most cosmopolitan city, with Chain and
Elisabeth Bridges (which connect Buda and Pest),
massive hilltop castle and churches.
The Commodore’s Cruise is a wonderful part of BCYC’s
tradition, providing a great way to see interesting
and beautiful places. However, the best part of these
cruises is the opportunity to spend time with our fellow
members. Mary and I thank Karen for her 2012 cruise
and hope you will join us on the Danube River in 2013.

High Tea
and Future Programs
The annual High Tea Luncheon in June was an elegant affair,
enjoyed by all. We were privileged again to use the beautiful tea
service donated to BCYC by Staff Commodore Ted O’Connor.
Not only was the hot tea delicious, the history and family
memories brought to us by Ted were heart-warming. The tables
were beautifully set with members’ own china, lovely flowers
and scrumptious traditional tea specialties from Chef Georges
Rapicault. Our Kentucky Derby – Run for the Roses theme
added to the fun, with the festive and colorful hats worn by
the ladies. Thanks to Kari Konapelsky, event chair, and all who
helped make this a very special day!

Welcome to the biggest and most exciting junior sailing
season of the year: the famed BCYC Summer Program! I can’t
wait to see how our kids do this year, because they are the
most motivated and talented group I think I have ever seen.
Make sure to come out every Friday for Sabot racing followed
by Burger Bash, an event that you don’t want to miss. There
is great food, people and a raffle, and awesome sailing. You
can watch the races from the docks or patio areas as our top
sailors battle it out, as well as some of our sailing coaches
compete against brave parents. As the coolest event of the
week, it happens throughout the summer and everyone is
invited.
Opening Day was a great opportunity for me to talk with
many of you, and I feel blessed to have found this club and
become so involved. Last month, we raised more than $5,000
on Family Bingo Night to help fund Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society research. More than 20 awesome prizes were
awarded, with Sean Caulfield taking home the trophy as
top fundraiser. The Leukemia Cup Junior Regatta, held that
same weekend, was great fun, with BCYC Juniors doing well.
We also enjoyed participating in the annual Balboa Island
parade June 3, another of our many activities designed to let
people know about BCYC and our strong Junior Program!
Thank you all for your awesome support. I hope to see you at
Burger Bash this summer, before I leave for college in the fall.

BCYC PREPARES FOR 2013 US JR. WOMEN’S DOUBLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP
June marked the beginning of the year-long countdown for the 2013 Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship
(JWDC). We now have confirmation from US Sailing that the dates for this event will be June 22-28, 2013. Competitors
will sail C420s. In anticipation of the many facets of club preparation, a new floating dock will be installed near the hoist
in the near future, and a new 20’ Zodiac support boat has been purchased. This equipment will not only be important to
our growing Junior Program, but will enable BCYC to support the needs of the JWDC event.
As mentioned previously, we will host 80 young ladies who will sail 40 boats. This will require strong support from all
BCYC members. Many of you will be contacted by our committee chairs to help with housing, entertainment, publicity,
race committee and general hospitality. Thanks in advance for your strong support.

LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA

Gearing Up for Summer
BCYC hosted our annual Leukemia Cup Regatta May 19-20,
with more than 60 competitors participating. For the first
time, we ran the regatta as a two-day event, resulting in more
racing — for a total of eight races. More importantly, we
raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Sean
Caulfield was the recipient of our Top Junior Fundraiser
Perpetual trophy, raising almost $5,000. Sailors from all over
the harbor participated and had a great time racing for a good
cause.
The spring sailing program wrapped up with some beautiful
weather over Memorial Day weekend. After some very
uncooperative lingering cold fronts affected most of our
weekends throughout the spring, sailors were very happy
to finally see some sun and calm breeze the last weekend
of spring sailing. Our junior sailors are now preparing for
the summer season. School is coming to an end and we look
forward to six weeks of sailing with no other distractions.
With so many things to look forward to, like Friday Burger
Bash, fleet racing in the harbor, Fun Zone trips and hanging
out with friends, BCYC Juniors are excited to get things
going.

Despite all of the excitement, this summer will also be a bit
of a challenge racing in the harbor. As most of you know,
the city of Newport Beach has begun a dredging project that
will take over most of our harbor sailing areas. Sailors and
coaches will be using extra caution to make sure we stay out
of the way of the barges and tugs. Safety is our top priority
and we plan for a fun and safe summer sailing season for our
junior sailors and those at the other area clubs.

Tournament Challenge
and Fun
The ocean temperature is warming up slowly, just in time
for two fishing tournaments. Teams from BCYC, BYC and
NHYC will compete in the annual Inter-Club Challenge,
Aug. 11-12, hosted by Newport Harbor Yacht Club. And,
the Catalina Island Yacht Club holds their tourney Sept.
6-8. This event is sure to attract anglers from throughout
Southern California.
Contact me for detailed information about these great
fishing tournaments. Grab your fishing gear, replace old
line with new and get ready for great fun on the water.
These events are about competition, camaraderie and
having a good time.

Inverters and Paint
Now You Know
By the time you read this, we should have the new name tag cabinet
installed on the wall, between the entry to the front office and Ship’s
Store, for convenient storage of each member’s nametag. This will
hopefully aid in my quest, for those of you who read my January/
February Masthead article, to have members put a name to a face
and say hello to a familiar but unnamed fellow member, or for those
special moments when, dare I say it, your mind just draws a blank.
If you have lost your name tag or want an extra, please ask Jacque
Pane in the front office to order one for you.
Mark your calendar and be advised that the Christmas Boat Parade
has been moved from Dec. 12-16 to Dec. 19-23. The club will therefore
be closed the following week, Dec. 26-31, reopening for the New
Year’s Eve party. Please contact Saul Aguilar, food and beverage
manager, if you have booked or are planning to book a holiday party,
keeping these new dates in mind.
For the club foodies, the Food and Beverage Committee meeting
will take place as scheduled on Wednesday, July 11, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
I will be moderating the meeting with assistance from General
Manager Scott Jones and Saul. We look forward to discussing
recent and upcoming food-and-beverage-related stuff. If you can’t

As a reminder, BCYC will hold the Fourth of July barbecue following
the Old Glory parade. The Member Art Show event, with dining
in the art gallery, returns Saturday, July 14, and the Taco Tuesday
buffet will continue through the end of August.
Given Wednesday is one of the most popular nights at the club
for members, committees and tappers, management will make a
concerted effort on yet-to-be booked Wednesday evenings to not
book any large non-member events, keeping the club available
primarily for our members’ enjoyment.

I have had a number of questions regarding inverters lately.
Inverters are becoming more of a standard piece of equipment
in many vessels. Battery power (12 or 24 volt) converted to
shore power (120 volt) is the basic idea – only with very
limited use available for a limited time. Know what breakers/
equipment are being powered by your inverter.
Remember, power use is 10 times when using an inverter. If
your hair dryer is a 15-amp unit, that translates to 150 amps
per hour on inverter power. If your television draws three
amps on shore power, that’s 30 amps per hour on inverter
power. Know your battery consumption.
I believe the best battery is a deep cycle 6-volt battery bank,
wired series/parallel, 12 or 24 volt. These batteries will
maintain power longer and for more discharge/charge cycles.
I see many 8D batteries being used because they are big –
some think they work better – unfortunately, these batteries
are engine-start batteries, excellent for a lot of power for a
short time, not best for maintaining long-lasting power.
The bill to ban copper-based bottom paint in California
has been dropped as the bill sponsor decided not to pursue
the legislation. You have been a big part of this decision
and Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) thanks you
for your input and support. From the beginning, RBOC
maintained that it is best to allow science and methodology,
common sense and affordability, be taken into consideration
before laws are enacted. Thanks again for your support and

we had some strong winds and rough seas that caused us to cancel and
reschedule two races — Angelman #3 and Lorin Weiss #3. I’m happy to
report that we ran those two races in June and are now headed downwind
towards the end of the year.

Next up is the Gil Knudson Series of “random leg” racing in July, August
and September. Then we jibe to the Club Championship and Harbor 20
Tune-Up Regattas in September. We close the season with the new YearEnd Race to Avalon and back in October.

As buoy racers know, the upwind leg of the race is all
about smart tacking to the windward mark, followed
by the scramble to hoist the spinnaker for the trip to
the leeward mark and maybe the finish line. While each
buoy race has a similar format, wind and sea conditions
can affect the outcome.
Mark your calendar as BCYC will host a US Sailing Regional Sailing
Programs Symposium Sept. 29. This event provides an opportunity for a
regional exchange of ideas and often includes renowned
guest speakers.
Did you know Race Committee has a 46-day
schedule? On many days, multiple races are run –
Race Committee faces a similar challenge. While we we actually start 114 races during the year. With
plan and strategize how to run all of the races, we this kind of a schedule, why are the “blue shirts”
sometimes have to tack unexpectedly. This past spring always smiling? Join us and find out!

The Adventures of Gulliver
About 25 years ago, we sailed to Avalon with a crew of rough and
rowdy sailors for the finish of an Angelman Series race. On board
was a character you would not want to meet in a dark alley: a tough
dude and our best foredeck guy. That night, we were tied up on a
mooring can with a couple of other boats and a nice ration of rum.
Our “character” was down below snoring away peacefully when
we decided it was time for him to wake up. We came up with the
rum-soaked bright idea to play Gulliver’s Travels, with him being
Gulliver and we were the rambunctious, not-so-little Lilliputians.

We gathered up odds and ends of string and twine so that we
would have enough to tie up every finger and toe, legs and arms, and
around his innate body. Once he was securely fastened and the cabin
darkened, we turned
on a portable green and
red running light and
held it above his head
to simulate being on
a direct course with
another boat. Once
that was in place, we
blew an air horn and
screamed, “starboard.”
He practically levitated
off the bunk, screaming
like a banshee warrior, only to realize he was completely immobile.
The crew was laughing hysterically until he broke away the ties
with shear brute strength and came up swinging. Luckily, he had
