The stadium offers unobstructed viewing for 6,000 fans and four tiers of parking that allow hundreds more the opportunity to view the game from their vehicle. In the past few years, several renovations have taken place. A concrete wall was removed on the south bowl and replaced with a grass-covered hillside. The running track surrounding the field also was removed, making the playing surface large enough for many events. New aluminum seating has been added to the home and visiting sides, in addition to a special seating area for wheelchairbound fans and an additional press box on the east side. The most recent addition has been two new removable play clocks. The first football game played on Ranger Field was the 1969 opener that ended up in a 34-6 rout of Fort Hays State (Kan.) University. Since 1998, Northwestern is 43-11 at Ranger Field and from 2000 on they are 35-10. NORTHWESTERN SPORTS HALL OF FAME The Northwestern Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1992 to honor past great athletes, coaches and supporters of Ranger athletics. Hall of Fame Day is held each Winter with a full slate of activities and is one of the most anticipated events of the year at the university. An induction luncheon is held on Saturday with the official induction ceremony conducted during the afternoon at halftime of the men’s basketball game. Each year, a selection committee reviews nominations made by fans and others, determines eligibility under the established criteria and elects the class. A Ranger basketball alumni game, a tradition started in 2006, is played on the Friday before the Hall of Fame Induction where former Ranger women and men get a chance to compete again. The Ranger coaching staff (left to right: Troy Haub, Garin Higgins and Tim Albin) hoist the 1999 NAIA National Championship Trophy. 46 Athletic Director - Bob Battisti BOB BATTISTI - DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Battisti currently is working with his coaches to ensure that athletic facilities remain a high priority for improvement. Under his leadership, the softball field has added a new seven-inning scoreboard, rebuilt the dugouts and added a new press box. The men and women’s basketball locker rooms have been totally renovated with new custom lockers, new carpet, computers and signage. The soccer field currently is undergoing changes as well with a new scoreboard, new press box and improved player benches. Bob Battisti is in his 23rd year with the Northwestern Oklahoma State University athletic program. For 21 years he was the Men’s Basketball Coach and is beginning his second season as the Director of Athletics. Named as Athletic Director on May 3, 2007, Battisti has worked fast and furiously to move the athletic program forward. In conjunction with the faculty senate Battisti has implemented a mandatory course performance check for all sports. In addition, he has developed the Northwestern Athletic Mission Statement that places an emphasis on character, sportsmanship and integrity among its studentathletes and staff. The school also has begun a “Vision for Victory” campaign that will lead to an upgrade of their football and baseball venues. This $4.5 million project will include construction of a new football locker room, construction of a new football press box and public use facility, construction of permanent seating and new dugouts at the baseball field and construction of a new baseball locker room and baseball/ softball indoor practice facility. These facility upgrades will directly impact at least 220 student-athletes. Battisti brings a wealth of intercollegiate athletics experience, insight and a history of pride in being a Ranger. A veteran of 28 years in collegiate coaching, he was the Men’s Basketball Coach at Northwestern from 19862007. During that time Northwestern won six conference titles and finished in the NAIA’s top 25 seven times. Battisti finished with a 409-295 overall collegiate record including a 374-265 mark at Northwestern. He led the Rangers to the NAIA national tournament five times including an “elite eight” finish in 2007. Battisti’s finest season was that of 1993-94 when the Rangers posted a 29-2 overall record and finished ranked #2 in the final national poll after advancing to the “sweet sixteen” of the NAIA national tournament. While at Northwestern he was named conference coach of the year five times and was selected as the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1994 by Basketball Times. During his tenure, Battisti has coached three All-Americans and five Academic All-Americans. Before coming to Northwestern, Battisti served as an assistant coach at Bethany (Minn.) Lutheran College for three seasons before earning his first head coaching position at Lakewood (Minn.) Community College. After three seasons there, he joined the staff at the University of Minnesota for two years. Dear Ranger Alumni and Fans, In September 2007, President Janet Cunningham announced the school’s intentions to improve the football and baseball venues to meet the needs of a modern-day collegiate athletic program. Northwestern has termed this athletic renaissance the Vision for Victory Campaign. Projects included as part of this campaign include a new football locker room, which will include space for athletic training and strength training facilities, a new press box and public use facility, permanent seating and new dugouts at the baseball field, and a new indoor practice facility for our baseball and softball teams. To complete all these projects, Northwestern must raise approximately $4.5 million. The challenge lies in the fact we must rely on private donations to fund this project. We would ask that you consider a commitment to the Vision for Victory Fund. We are counting on your gift to continue to provide our current and future studentathletes with the very best Northwestern has to offer. Ride, Rangers, Ride! Sincerely, Bob Battisti Director of Athletics 47 www.nwosu.edu/visionforvictory.html President - Dr. Janet Cunningham President - Dr. Janet Cunningham Dr. Janet Cunningham began serving as the 19th president of Northwestern Oklahoma State University on July 1, 2006, following her appointment by the Board of Regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma. Cunningham becomes just the second alumni and first woman to become president of the institution. In appointing Cunningham to the University’s top post, the Board of Regents cited her leadership abilities, experience and vision for Northwestern, qualities that inspired confidence among the University’s many stakeholders. Cunningham was named executive vice president in 2002 after serving 12 years as vice president for fiscal affairs. As executive vice president, Cunningham served as the second highest ranking officer at Northwestern, developing and administering the university’s fiscal operations, with additional direct control over student services, intercollegiate athletics, auxiliary services, physical plant, financial aid, information technology and economic development. She joined the faculty at Northwestern in 1979 and continued teaching until 1985, when she became an instructor at the University of Oklahoma while her husband attended law school there. She returned to teaching at Northwestern in 1988. A Message From the President Dear Ranger Fans: Welcome to Ranger Field for football at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. As you can plainly see, we are in the progress of renovating portions of the stadium as part of our Vision for Victory campaign for athletics. We hope the construction process will cause you a minimal amount of inconvenience. I know the results will be outstanding facilities for our student-athletes and fans. To those of you who have contributed to Vision for Victory, I offer my heartfelt thanks. When completed, our Vision for Victory projects will transform our football and baseball venues and greatly enhance the athletic experience at Northwestern for hundreds of student-athletes each year. Cunningham earned a doctorate in education from Oklahoma State University and has both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern. She also has completed professional education at the Institute of Educational Management at Harvard University and through the College Business Management Institute at the University of Kentucky. In 2001, she became a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma. A leader in civic affairs, Cunningham serves on the executive committee of the Alva Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Woods County Economic Development Association. She also has served in numerous volunteer capacities with organizations connected to the Alva Public Schools. Cunningham and her husband, Rick, a local attorney, have four children: sons Brett, Tanner and Drew, and a daughter Allison. If you have not yet made a contribution to Vision for Victory, I invite you to consider making a gift. Major renovation projects remain at both the football and baseball venues. Thank you for your support of Northwestern athletics. Our coaches and student-athletes are truly thankful for your support and pledge to give their best during the season.
