President’s Message
With any developing institution of higher learning, the work
is never done. This is evident by the college’s capital development projects, expansions, and changing landscape. Preventive
maintenance, another important facet required to keep buildings and grounds in good shape, cannot be overlooked. They
work together to offer students more and to help strengthen our
position as an academic center of higher learning. In spite of
such impressive strides, another kind of building is at work to
ensure a quality educational program.
I am happy to announce that the 2011-2012 academic year
resulted in the reaffirmation of the college’s accreditation with
no recommendation from the Commission on Colleges of the
South Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). With our
accreditation project successfully behind us, we now have a clear path to devote our energies fully to helping all of our students to achieve success. Our theme for this undertaking is Implementing the Quality
Enhancement Project (QEP) to Increase Retention and Graduation Rates. Our challenge is to make sure
that our accredited programs and facilities are put to the most effective use in bringing our graduate rate up
to at least 40 % as prescribed in the institution’s current five-year plan.
This challenge cannot be the particular responsibility of academic divisional chairpersons, instructional
faculty, and academic advisors who work within each of our academic majors only. It cannot solely be the
responsibility of the college’s counseling staff and career counseling staff to identify students who show
early symptoms that may lead to their dropping out. Working collectively, we can work with those students
to help them recapture the positive attitudes that brought them to Morris College. This challenge will be
the collective responsibility of everyone connected with the college. Everyone is called upon to increase
their focus on aspects of their work that help to improve retention and graduation rates for all students.
At Morris College, we measure academic excellence not only with regard to how effectively we operate
as an institution but how effective our students develop during their enrollment at this institution. QEP is
another example of the constant attention given to ensure that the “new ideas and techniques to the carrying
out of the college’s educational mission” will bring breadth and depth to our students educational experience as they are being prepared for “successful careers and services.”
The college’s accomplishments and strives are quite impressive. We have a Forensic Center to benefit
students majoring in Criminal Justice and have added forensics to that major. We are awaiting occupancy
of a newly built student health and wellness center to benefit students studying in the health sciences/
recreation administration programs and the college’s Army ROTC program. Our science building has undergone a two-story wing expansion to enhance instruction for our Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) programs. Currently under construction is a new three-story, twin tower residence
hall. These are just some of the college’s capital development projects.
The real building, however, can be seen through our students who “enter to learn” and “depart to serve.”
It can also be seen through our faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and our loyal supporters. Thank you for helping us build a better and stronger Morris College.

It may be summer, but that doesn’t mean school isn’t in for some. Or that they might not be
enjoying it. “It’s a good program,” said Daeonte Lang. “It helps you learn stuff and better yourself.
It gives you a head start on high school courses.” He’s in his first year of Morris College’s Upward
Bound Program, but he has many family members who have been through it and encouraged
him to take it.
“They told me it was a whole lot of fun activities, and I’d get a good education,” Lang said. Morris
College has offered the Upward Bound Program for more than 35 years, said director K.D. Singleton. The federally funded program targets low income and first-generation, college-bound high
school students in seven high schools in Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties. Singleton said this
could mean one parent has some college or neither parent does.
The program has two parts — one during the academic year and six weeks during the summer.
Both focus on core subjects as well as preparing students for high school exit exams and college
entrance exams.
“We try to support the high schools,” he said. “We’re not replacing them. We help keep students in
place or help them advance to the next level.”
Morris College THE UPDATE
This summer, 72 students are staying on the Morris College campus. During the day, they have
classes taught by state-certified teachers. Many teach in South Carolina public schools during the
school year or are retired educators.
18
In the evenings the students have various physical and/or cultural activities and speakers. “The
president wants to expose them to everything the college setting has to offer,” Singleton said.
“They remain on campus the whole week, have roommates and eat in the dining facility. We want
them to get acclimated. Some have come back and told us it certainly helped.”
The president of the college is Luns C. Richardson. The oldest students in the program, called
“bridge students,” are able to earn up to seven hours of college credit during the summer, and it is
all still funded under the program, Singleton said.

Alexus Henry’s older cousin is one of those bridge students. “She told me about the curriculum
and the activities,” Alexus said. “The traveling was fun, and it’s a good college. It’s been a great college experience.” The program also features educational trips, Singleton said, and while the staff
certainly hopes students will want to attend Morris later, it is not a requirement.
The program is set to grow. The grant was recently renewed for another five years and by
December, the college will serve 92 students in the Upward Bound Program, Singleton said. For
more information, call (803) 934-3193. High school students in the tri-county area can also consult their guidance counselors.
Morris College THE UPDATE
Kaniya Gales is a rising senior, but this is her first year in the program. “I like everything,” she said.
“It’s beneficial. Before this, I didn’t know anything about colleges except this one (points to Florida
State University).” Instructor Johnnie McCrea had the rising seniors research four institutions of
higher education for majors offered and costs.

President Speaks of College’s Growth at Opening Convocation
President Richardson provided a wealth of
information at the college’s Opening Convocation,
the formal opening of the 2012-2013 academic
year.
The President informed the campus community
of the college’s recent reaffirmation of accreditation
by the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools Commission on Colleges. He also
addressed the institutions growth, and the new
Quality Enhancement Plan.
The college has an enrollment of 907 students
to date, with approximately 700 of those students
residing on campus. The year also brings a
significant increase in the number of students
enrolled in ROTC. Referring to the total growth of
the college, President Richardson stated, “ As we
grow, we will become even more geographically
diverse.”
He shared the significance of the Quality
Enhancement Plan and its efforts to improve the
retention rate and increase the graduation rate,
stating, “QEP will bring more breadth and depth
to our students. The college grows as its students
grow.”
Dr. Radman Ali, Chief Marshall, leads the faculty and staff
processional.
Referring to the college’s growth through its
capital projects: the Forensic Center, the recently
completed expansion of the Wilson-Booker
Science building, the soon to open health and
wellness facility, and the twin towers dormitory,
the President stated, “ The real building can be
seen through our students. “
In conclusion, President Richardson shared a
literary work titled, College, written by Christopher
Evans, sophomore. The poem shares the value of
perseverance and hard work during college life.

NEWS BRIEFS
Accreditation Reaffirmed by SACS
Morris College has received official notification
from the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
that its accreditation has been reaffirmed for
another 10 years.
A visiting committee from the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools Commission
on Colleges spent September 19 – 21, 2011
on the campus assessing the institution’s
effectiveness. This achievement means the
college has approval to award regionally
recognized baccalaureate degrees. It also
means that the college remains eligible to
receive monies from the federal government,
foundations, corporations, and student
financial aid.
Under Dr. Richardson’s presidency, initial
accreditation was achieved in 1978 and was last
reviewed and reaffirmed in 2002.

The new QEP Computer/Writing Lab is housed in
the Wilson-Booker Science building expansion.
QEP Poised to Make a Difference
The 2012-2013 academic year is off to a
promising start with the implementation of the
college’s Quality Enhancement Plan.
QEP will advance reading comprehension and
vocabulary development for all juniors. The
program combines classroom instruction and
computer lab exercises to achieve its objectives.
Morris College THE UPDATE
The rationale for QEP: Today’s professional
and managerial careers require increased levels
of reading comprehension and vocabulary
development and the junior class is a critical
group. The majority of the class will graduate
within a 21 month period and have an ample
opportunity to benefit from the program.

Willis C. Cooper
Pastoral Ministry, Cum Laude,
Sumter, SC (deceased)
Leonard O. Griffin
In 1996, the former separate
non-accredited School of Religion was phased out. Two new
degree majors were developed to
maintain one of the college’s
original missions of preparing
ministers.
Pastoral Ministry prepares students for careers in ministry,
develops them as effective ministers, and provides the proper
foundation for graduate and professional study.
Christian Education prepares
students for careers as directors
of Christian education programs
in churches, as well as other
church-related jobs, and for
graduate and professional
schools. Both majors provide
meaningful internships for practical application and skill development.
Morris College THE UPDATE
Graduates have excelled academically in their religious studies and are making considerable
contributions in ministry
through pastoral assignments,
community outreach, counseling, and other church-related
opportunities.

A Message from the MCNAA President:
It is with pleasure that I accept the challenge and expectations that you have in me to guide
Morris College National Alumni Association, MCNAA, in accordance with the bylaws and
vision of the association for the next two years. It is with humility that I accept the reins of
leadership. You have given me an awesome responsibility, one that I accepted with great
anticipation and willingness to stay the course for greater achievement.
My vision for the administration is to work together to make MCNAA a model to be
emulated. My primary goals are to help broaden and deepen the commitment and
participation of our alumni to the college. It is my desire to increase the numbers
participating in alumni events and broaden the scope of their participation. I hope to help
expand the number of our alumni who contribute to the college through time, talent and
treasure. I welcome your input; I value your opinions, and with your help and support there
is nothing that we cannot accomplish. I encourage all interested alumni to explore how they
may become reengaged with Morris College.
I welcome a group of dynamic and dedicated alumni to our Leadership Team who responded
to the call. I encourage you to become totally committed in serving as officers, working on
various committees, recruiting students and visiting the campus. It will take all of us giving
our best in the most professional manner to move the MCNAA forward.
As we embark on this new administration, let us pause to reflect on the spirit of those whose
leadership has paved the way for this great association. We must build on the ideals and
strategies that have made this organization worthy of our time and resources. Let us reaffirm
our commitment to continuing the legacy of pride and dedicated service to Morris, Our
College Dear. While our current team is exceptional, we know the more our alumni become
involved, the more we can ensure a successful future of excellence together.
Best Wishes,
Barbara Roman Jackson ‘72
