Cranberry growers for sure–but artists and outdoor enthusiasts also attach their names to the Bandon Cranberry Festival tradition. For title sponsor Wild Rivers Coast Alliance, the festival is a platform to promote local tourism. Funded by net proceeds from the Preserve course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, the alliance supports local projects that demonstrate a commitment to conservation, community and economy. Alliance executive director Jim Seeley and executive assistant Marie Simonds hit the ground running in 2012 with the opening of Bandon Preserve. The festival is one of many organizational and individual projects to earn enthusiastic support from WRCA in the last two years. "This title sponsorship allows us to continue a 67 year tradition," said Julie Miller, Bandon Chamber of Commerce director. "It's been fun to watch Jim and Marie embrace the community. We're thrilled the WRCA steering committee had confidence in the chamber to sponsor us for the second year in a row." Washed Ashore joins the festival Alliance grants also helped bring a new organization to Old Town Bandon and the festival market: Washed Ashore Art to Save the Sea. As lead artist and executive director for Washed Ashore, Angela Haseltine Pozzi designs art to educate consumers about the impact of plastic waste on marine life and habitat. Larger than life sculptures depict sea creatures; and all the pieces are made by volunteers from plastic debris recovered from local beaches. Pozzi's educational and ecological project goals made sense to the staff and committee members at WRCA. "We met with Angela, and she makes a believer out of you really quickly," said Seeley. With support from WRCA and other local donors, Washed Ashore recently set up exhibit and workshop space at Harbortown Events Center in Old Town. Alliance grant money also allowed the organization to hire more staff and expand business hours. We look to support projects that have a life beyond our spending dollars. Washed Ashore demonstrates growth and sustainability. –Marie Simonds, WRCA Find Washed Ashore sea creatures at the Cranberry Festival Old Town Market. Volunteer at a workshop and watch your collaborative sculpture come to life. "It's really enabled us to make a bigger impact on the town and the tourists," said Washed Ashore development director Frank Rocco. "Our main objective is to change consumer habits. It's rewarding and exciting to have a project that people can agree on universally, and WRCA is helping us do that." In June, Washed Ashore staff announced acceptance of a commission for 12 new sculptures. Washed Ashore interpretive sculpture exhibits are scheduled for display at marine theme parks in California, Florida and Texas as part of the SeaWorld 50th anniversary celebration from March 2014 through September 2015. The Old Town set-up was a strategic plan to attract more visitors and volunteer artists to help craft the SeaWorld commission. And it's working. This summer, Washed Ashore is hosting more than 300 visitors per day. The festival promises even more volunteer artists to bring new sculptures to life. 4 Bandon Oregon Chamber of Commerce Newsletter::August/September 2013 2013 Festival Sponsors Title Sponsors Wild Rivers Coast Alliance Bandon Ocean Spray Growers Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Bain Insurance Edward Jones Investments SeaPort Airlines Additional Sponsors Bandon Bookkeeping Service Bandon Fish Market Bandon Inn Bandon Mercantile Bandon Vision Center Best Western Inn at Face Rock Big Wheel General Store Billy Smoothboars C & K Market Inc.
