This has allowed them to take more children and some of a much younger age. Reception has moved to where Year 1 used to be and they have been given part of what used to be the front playground as their outdoor learning environment with a lovely colourful fence all of the way around to keep them safe. The remaining front playground space is now being used only as a waiting area for before and after school. A ramp has been completed to allow everyone to get safely down and back from the rear playground. Orange Classroom Purple Classroom Green Classroom Green Classroom Green Class Cloakroom 3 W.I.N To ensure the safety of the children and adults that work and visit our school we have implemented the following changes to our school security this year: All playtimes now take place on the back playground Additional staff have been first aid trained New vehicle and pedestrian front gates with buzzer access have been installed and is now the only way onto our school grounds during the day Dedicated CCTV cameras All staff have enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks, including any building or grounds maintenance staff All visitors to the school are given a re d vi sit or s‟ la n ya r d a nd a safeguarding statement to read All staff now wear a blue staff lanyard with their name and picture displayed. Staff photos are also displayed in the school foyer Main school doors have key coded locks The entrance & exit doors are alarmed All children undertake and annual program of Internet Safety to ensure the make safe choices and decisions when working online When working with the Internet, only safe search engines are used, such as www.askkids.com All school computers have been set up with an on screen button that children can push if they encounter anything online that makes them worried or anxious Fronter, our school Managed Learning Environment (MLE) is secured in such a way that individual user names and passwords are required for access both at school and at home Our new vehicle and pedestrian security gates STAFF PHOTOGRAPHS ON DISPLAY IN THE FOYER INTERNET SAFETY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. WHY NOT VISIT THE ‘THINK YOU KNOW’ WEBSITE : http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/5_7/ You may have noticed that recently throughout our school the staff are wearing blue name badges and visitors red. The children know clearly that blue means a person they can totally trust and red means a visitor they should be polite to. They also know that they may not speak to anyone who does not have blue or red on and they must find someone with blue on to tell them. It is highly unlikely that this situation would arise, but just as the children know how to approach people whilst out shopping with their parents or carers, they know how to approach people in their day at school with us. 4 W.I.N 5 Saturday 2nd October 2010 FIREWORK SAFETY Year 2 have made posters about firework safety W.I.N Keeping Safe With Fireworks Tips For Children 1. Keep babies and pets indoors. 2. Stay away from fires. 3. Stay with a grown up. 4. Never pick a firework up from the ground. 5. Adults only light fireworks. 6. Stand in a safe place. You should never touch a firework Stand back from fires when they light up. Don‟t leave your door open or babies might get out. Myisha Some of our pupils attended a tennis and squash trials, organised by Esporta Health Clubs, which was held at the Surrey Health & Racquets Club in Hannibal Way, Croydon. The children had a great time playing on the courts and it was noted that a few of our children showed great potential. Never pick a firework up from the ground when it is lit up. Chloe 6 W.I.N Harvest in Reception Wolsey Infant & Nursery School held their Harvest Festival assembly on Wednesday 20th October 2010. To ensure as many parents and carers could attend, Year 2, Yellow Class, and Morning Nursery parents were invited to the 9.15am assembly and Year 1, Red Class, Blue Class and Afternoon Nursery parents joined us at 2.00pm. We would like to thank everybody for the food gifts that were brought in to add to the fresh produce from our school garden and from Miss O‟Callaghan‟s Grandfather‟s allotment. These gifts have been distributed locally to people who really do appreciate being remembered at this time. 7 W.I.N This year sees the 70th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain, in which this local area played a very important role, with RAF Biggin Hill one of the key fighter stations that protected the country in World War II. Scramble! Muddy Trenches in Flanders Fields November is the time in the year that people wear red poppies to remember those who have sacrificed their lives for us during war around the world. Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day as it used to be known is always held on the 11th November and a two minute silence is held at 11.00 am - „The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month‟. It was at 11 am on 11th November 1918, that World War I ended after four long years of fighting. Spitfire at RAF Biggin Hill 70 years ago Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - The Spitfire, Lancaster & Hurricane The poppy was chosen as a symbol of remembrance because it was the only flower that was able to grow in the muddy WWI battlefields of Flanders in Belgium. The soldiers saw it as a sign of warmer weather, new life and hope for the future. 8 W.I.N As part of Family Learning Week, on Thursday 7th & Friday 8th October 2010, Wolsey Infant & Nursery parents and carers were invited into our school hall to share literacy and numeracy learning activities with their children that the staff had kindly prepared and set up. It was a great opportunity to show them how much learning can happen through different fun based activities at school and at home. Each class also had a time slot in the hall to try out the activities with their classmates. 9 W.I.N CALAT in partnership with our school is currently running a 15 week „fun with numbers‟ family maths course. The aim of the course is to allow parents to find out about how their child is learning numeracy at our school, make resources, get ideas to help their child at home and to brush up their own maths skills. The course runs from 1.00pm until 3.00pm every Monday. As part of this time, the parents get to work alongside their children and support them in age appropriate fun maths activities. Also, as part of the course, the children along with their parents get a further two hours a week on a Monday and Friday where they are using ICT maths websites to support their learning. The 17 parents and their 19 children seem to really been enjoying the course and are looking forward to continuing with it after Christmas until March 2011. 10 W.I.N On Wednesday 22nd September 2010, we ran an evening event for parents to come in and find out more about how we teach reading and writing at our school and how best parents and carers can support our work at home. The evening was very well attended and it was nice to see the parents really enjoying the practical tasks that were provided. Our reading scheme’s book characters Our children are really enjoying our new reading scheme and look forward to reading about what Biff, Chip, Floppy and the other characters are going to get up to next! Parents getting to grips with our handwriting style Have you used the BBC website ‘The Magic Key’ yet? www.bbc.co.uk/schools/magickey/index.shtml This site contains literacy activities that involve the characters from our reading scheme. Why not have a look? 11 W.I.N Roke Primary School‟s ICT Suite Storytelling Workshop Friday 1st October 2010 Five of our Year 2 children attended a special literacy event at Roke Primary School along with Miss Avis and Mr. James. Our pupils took part in a really enjoyable storytelling workshop where the storyteller from Africa told three fascinating and captivating stories and the pupils had to act them out. While this was going on, Miss Avis set up our display that showed all the fun things our school did during our Pirate Workshop week. Other schools from the local area also had their displays up to show us what creative writing activities they had been doing over the Summer Term. Our pupils enjoyed talking to the visitors about their pirate work. They also had the opportunity to visit all of the other displays to get ideas to bring back to school to share. Our „Enthusiastic Year 2 Writers 12 W.I.N Oracy Group Displays Nursery Displays 13 W.I.N … and visitors to our school - Autumn Term 2010 On Monday 11th October, Winston the musician came in to work with Reception. He sang some songs with them and then some children were able to play the instruments he brought along. The children all had a great time. Congratulations to Leon Hickman who was a runner-up in Croydon’s Christmas Lights Competition. The lights were switched on this year by Basil Brush and Gemma Bissix on Thursday 18th November. Wolsey Infant & Nursery School have contributed £87.00 towards this year‟s New Addington Christmas Lights Appeal. This was raised through parents purchasing their child‟s Christmas card designs that they drew earlier this term. Thank you very much. 14 W.I.N This term, Reception visited the New Addington Library. The librarian read them the story of The Ugly Duckling and then some of the children helped to tell the story of the Gingerbread Man using puppets and dressing up clothes. She also showed the children some pictures of New Addington in the past. The Reception children enjoyed having a little time to select a book, sit down and read with their friends. 2010 Our School 1948 Site of Our School From January, our school library will be open two days after school so that you can come with your parent or carer and borrow a book to take home. Opening times will be: Tuesdays 3.10pm until 3.30pm Thursdays 3.10pm until 3.45pm The first day will be Tuesday 11th January 2011. We hope you will come and see our wide range of books. Our School Library 15 W.I.N As part of their topic on materials, Year 2 went on a trip to visit St. Paul‟s Cathedral in London to look at the materials that were used in the design of the building and also to understand how the building was affected by the Great Fire of London. On Monday 15th November, Year 2 took part in a Florence Nightingale workshop. The children really enjoyed finding out further information about who she was, how she helped make positive changes to health care in Britain and why she is still remembered today. 16 W.I.N Year 2 have been thinking about what a „golden lunchtime play would look like in practice. Year 2 “I eat fresh apples because they are healthy to eat. I have fruit and vegetables because they are good to eat. Onions are crunchy and healthy.” Courtney, Year 2 “We have fruit and vegetables because they are healthy and yummy. We have fruit and vegetables because they make you fast. Fruit makes you grow strong.” Leah, Year 2 “This is all good fruits and vegetables. They are good for you and they make you healthy.” Chardenay, Reception Reception Yellow Class Make a Healthy Fruit Salad 17 Healthy Eating in Reception W.I.N Mrs. Lee, one of our Parent Governors, works at G amba d o. She kind ly arranged for our Year 2 children to visit. Whilst they were there, they took part in some research about keeping healthy. Each child was given a pedometer to measure how many steps they did inside the play frame, over 20 minutes of exercise. They also had a talk about healthy eating. Have a look at some of the pictures from the day. The Food Plate To have a balanced diet, you should eat more of the green and orange food types and not so much of the red, yellow and blue food types. 18 W.I.N 33 children & 10 adults Thursday 9th December 2010 Our choir were lucky enough to be invited to sing outside the Croydon Visitors‟ Centre, just to the left of East Croydon Station. Mrs. Forward and Miss Taylor taught us the Christmas songs in the few weeks leading up to the day. We were due to sing on the Thursday before, but due to the school heating not working properly, the school had to shut. We raised... £134.33 19 28 children & 6 adults W.I.N Saturday 11th December 2010 We raised... £47.40 Mrs. Cefai organised for our choir to sing at Ikea to raise further money for our school. We were driven there in two minibuses driven by Mr. James & Mrs. Lock. We set ourselves up just inside the main entrance and sang for about half an hour. Adrienne, a lady that worked for Ikea then kindly took us upstairs to the staff restaurant where she gave us sweets, biscuits, crisps and a drink. We really enjoyed that. Afterwards we sang „We wish you a merry Christmas‟ to thank her. As we still had a little time left, it was decided that we would try and raise a little more money, so we went outside the front entrance to sing. Once we had finished, Mr. James gave us all a chocolate advent calendar to thank us for coming and singing so well. We raised £47.40, but someone thought we would appreciate five Jamaican dollars! 20 W.I.N 149 Badges Claimed 144 Badges Claimed 151 Badges Claimed Unknown This term, Wolsey Infant & Nursery children have continued to walk to school, claiming their ‘Walk to School’ badges. Ms. Walsh (Education Welfare Officer) 21 Pugh Bear...ly Saw Anything on Russian Cruise W.I.N Pugh Bear had an interesting Summer. He went to Russia. Pugh flew from Heathrow to Moscow airport tucked up warmly in luggage. He then went on board a ship called the Kirov, into a cabin and was allowed out—first into the cabin and later out for a walk in Moscow. He didn‟t see all the wonderful sights like the Kremlin and Red Square and all the beautiful cathedrals, but at least he had some fresh air and saw some sights. After three days in Moscow, he travelled up canals and rivers through 16 locks until he came to the largest lake in Europe. Unfortunately he was not allowed out, as they have real grizzly bears in Russia—indeed their emblem is a bear. Unfortunately, he also missed the sights in St.Petersburg—all the wonderful old buildings including the Winter Palace and perhaps the greatest museum in the World—The Hermitage, but he at least made sure Mrs Marsh did not get drunk on Russian vodka—the drink they make from potatoes! Finally, he made it back safe and sound to Heathrow. He has a few tales to tell his teddy friends, I am sure.
