MISSISSIPPI
Mississippi strikes an intriguing
balance for today’s golfer—with first class
courses that are both technically
challenging and fun to play, yet also
affordable and easily accessible. As avid
golfers strive to find more value-laden
trips, Mississippi golf continues to climb
the list of those searching for quality and
fun on the links.
Fun times off the course are also a
specialty in Mississippi. Casino resorts,
sprinkled throughout the state, provide
high energy entertainment; music trails
boast of the state’s musical heritage;
many waterways provide boating and
fishing opportunities; and restaurants
serve up a variety of experiences, from
fine-dining to family style meals.
With a temperate climate that offers
near perfect golf weather year round,
Mississippi can accommodate the needs
and budgets of all kinds of golf groups.
Over 140 courses dot the landscape of
the Magnolia State and come designed by
some of the most prominent names in
golf—Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Jerry
Pate, Tom Fazio, Davis Love III and Bob
Cupp, just to name a few. This ensures
that Mississippi offers something for the
casual player and professional alike. And
in fact, Mississippi hosts two professional
events - the PGA TOUR’s Sanderson Farms
Championship at the Country Club of
Jackson each fall and the Champions
Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic at
the Beau Rivage’s Fallen Oak in Biloxi each
spring. Plus amateur golfers get the royal
treatment at highly organized Golf & Blues
Events. The dates and locations can be
found on VisitMississippi.org.

A NOTE ABOUT THE REGIONS
Five distinct regions offer Mississippi
golf courses designed to fit the natural
lay of the land. They are the Delta Region,
birthplace of the Blues and comprised of
wide-open flatlands; the Hills Region,
featuring gently rolling landscapes; the
Capital/River Region with its winding
waterways and rich history; the Pines
Region in the Central-East part of the
state and blanketed with quiet forests;
and the Coastal Region, boasting the Gulf
of Mexico’s sparkling water and beaches.
Each region is color-coded within the
pages of this guide for ease of use.
A NOTE ABOUT THE LISTINGS
All public, semi-private, military, resort
and private golf courses are listed within
their respective regions. Lodging and golf
package listings are from participating
properties. They are just a small sampling
of all the great golf vacations in
Mississippi. All published rates and
packages in this guide are subject to
change, may vary and restrictions may
apply. Call each property for the most
current information. The “Golfers’ Picks”
section provides a small sample of dining,
entertainment and non-golfing options by
region. We invite visiting golfers to email us
their favorites to be included next year at
[email protected].

the nation’s best

The Ole Miss Golf Course, Oxford
The most northern of Mississippi
counties, DeSoto County boasts four
championship golf courses, which
packaged together with local hotels create
an affordable golf vacation with lots of
variety. The city of Olive Branch is the
home to three of these courses, beginning
with Cherokee Valley. The course features
wide fairways and large Champion
Bermuda greens, but it’s the 11 lakes and
78 bunkers which provide the intimidation
factor. Plantation Golf Club, located nearby,
also features friendly, open fairways and
oversized Champion Bermuda greens, but
again strategically placed mounds and lots
of water make for a challenging tract.
Wedgewood Golf Club is an 18-hole
championship layout situated on rolling,
scenic terrain and featuring demanding
water hazards on ten holes.
Rounding out the DeSoto County golf
selections is North Creek Golf Club in
Southaven. Grassy mounds, large
undulating greens, and strategic dogleg
fairways create a real test, but the most

contribution to the explosive growth of
rock ’n’ roll as a musical
genre, being the home of
Mississippi’s most famous

Delta
REGION
River Bend Links Golf Course, Tunica Resorts
The Mississippi Delta Region is
remarkably flat and contains some of the
most fertile soil in the world, as evidenced
by the verdant green fairways of its
exciting golf courses. It was also fertile
ground for the cultivation of America’s only
indigenous art form, as the “Birthplace of
the Blues.” And although most of the golf
and high-energy entertainment is centered
around Tunica, just south is the state’s
blues mecca in the small town of
Clarksdale. It’s the home of the historic
Delta Blues Museum, Morgan Freeman’s
famous Ground Zero Blues Club and
many Mississippi Blues Trail markers.
A new wave of entertainment has
transformed the Tunica area into one of
the top entertainment venues in the
country. The glitz and glitter of casino
gaming has given a new generation of
music lovers yet another reason to visit.
Tunica’s eight casinos offer a vast
assortment of gaming options including
over 300 table games and more than
12,000 slots. If all that wasn’t enough,
two truly top-notch golf courses in Tunica
add yet another reason to pack your bags
and head to The Delta region of
Mississippi. They are Tunica National, a
Mark McCumber design, featuring rolling
terrain, wide fairways, generous greens
and unspoiled natural surroundings, and
River Bend Links, Clyde Johnston’s self
described “field of dunes.”
The Mississippi Delta is small river
towns, juke joints, exciting casino gaming,
championship golf and unmatched
Southern hospitality, all at a great value
and an easy drive from Southern and
Midwestern states.
The Delta was also fertile ground for the
cultivation of America’s only indigenous art
form, as the “Birthplace of the Blues.”

Capital/River
REGION
Beau Pré Country Club, Natchez
Mississippi’s Capital/River Region is
a study in contrasts, consisting of the
state’s largest metropolis, Jackson, and
small, historic river towns, such as
Natchez and Vicksburg. Golf layouts range
from wide, open flatlands to tight, waterladen fairways. The region’s musical legacy
is as diverse as its golf, with blues,
rock ’n’ roll and jazz flourishing here.
Jackson played an important roll in
the development of Mississippi’s musical
contributions with several record
companies based here in the 1950’s. The
metro area plays host to some of the top
players on the PGA TOUR each fall at the
Sanderson Farms Championship. It’s
played at the Country Club of Jackson.
The Refuge, a strategic 18-hole
championship course measures 6,635
yards from the tips. It’s located close to
the Jackson-Evers International Airport,
so a round before takeoff can be a great
ending to any visit to the capital city.
Rolling terrain, large undulating
greens, and gorgeous scenery are found
at Quail Hollow at Percy Quin State Park,
located an hour south of Jackson in
McComb. Quail Hollow was designed
by well-known architect Arthur Hills
and has been consistently rated a
prestigious 4 stars by Golf Digest’s
Places to Play. Golf villas are available
at the state park, providing modern
amenities and a convenient place to
stay next to the golf course.
Natchez is home to two exciting
courses. Beau Pré Country Club is
situated on the banks of Second
Creek and features a 90-foot clay
bluff and rolling terrain; and Duncan Park,
a traditional style course built near the
historic downtown in 1928, boasts huge
oak trees dripping with Spanish moss.
History abounds in the Capital/River
Region. Yet plantation homes, which
survived the Civil War, Blues Trail sites,
and the historic state capitol are coupled
with modern, distinctive accommodations
and challenging golf courses to create the
best of the new South.
The Refuge, Flowood
The region’s musical legacy is as diverse
as its golf, with blues, rock ’n’ roll
and jazz flourishing here.

The Coastal Region is an eclectic mix
of award-winning golf, exciting musical
entertainment, intriguing history, and
stunning scenery. The historic districts of
Hattiesburg and Laurel showcase charming
Victorian and turn-of-the-century mansions.
And along the Gulf of Mexico in the Biloxi
area lies a chain of glitzy casino resorts,
exciting music venues, beachfront hotels
and condos, and one-of-a-kind restaurants.
No visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast
is complete without a trip to Mary

idea of hog heaven, The Shed is just for
you. The subject of a Food Network series,
The Shed serves mouth-watering ribs,
succulent chicken, and choice beef.
The region beckons professional
golfers by hosting an annual stop on the
Champions Tour. The Mississippi Gulf
Resort Classic is played each spring at
Fallen Oak. Additionally, the Coastal Region
will host amateur golfers at the 2015

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is home to
both the state’s best collection of golf
courses and most luxurious casino resorts.
Currently eleven casinos are open with
more on the way. And with the addition of a
couple of world-class golf courses by two of
the hottest designers in the game, Tom

can play” in the state; and
Golfweek’s 2nd “best casino
course” in the country.
Beau Rivage Casino Resort, the course
features dramatic bunkers and undulating
greens, and it offers surprising changes in
elevation for a coastal course.
Jerry Pate’s only coastal design in
Mississippi is The Preserve, the home
course of Palace Casino Resort. The
course has been granted membership into
the prestigious Audubon International
Signature Program and it’s ranked in the
top ten of Golf Digest’s “best in state.”
The name-dropping continues at The
Bridges Golf Club at Hollywood Casino in
Bay St. Louis. It’s Mississippi’s only Arnold
Palmer Signature golf course and ranked
among the “top 50 casino courses in the
country” by Golfweek. Designed by Jack
Nicklaus for Harrah’s Casino, Grand Bear is
located north of Gulfport and is known for
its strategic routing and unspoiled setting
within the Desoto National Forest.
Not to be left out of the fun, Davis
Love III contributed Shell Landing to the
Mississippi “Golf Coast” selections.
Located east of Biloxi, it was named the
5th “best new upscale course” in America
by Golf Digest upon opening and it’s now
the 3rd “best public access course” in the
state according to Golfweek.
In the western part of the coastline,
Diamondhead Country Club features two
distinct courses, the Pines and the
Cardinal. The scenic beauty and Southern
hospitality found here make the demanding
layouts a pleasure to play. And in Pass
Christian, the Oaks Golf Club was designed
by Landmark National of PGA West and
Kiawah fame. Its layout is highlighted by
strategic bunkering, demanding greens, and
a circuitous routing that creates a
challenging, yet serene experience.

casino, Island View in Gulfport, is a true
gem on the Mississippi coast, being named
one of the state’s top courses by GolfWeek.
And then there are the two exciting
historic courses in the region. Great
Southern in Gulfport was built in 1908 by
Donald Ross and has recently been
renovated and Gulf Hills, east of Biloxi has
been an integral part of the golfing
landscape on the coast since 1927. Both
have hosted a vast array of dignitaries and
infamous people over the years.
An hour north of the Mississippi
coastline is the college town of
Hattiesburg. It has become a real foody
town of late, thanks to restaurant owner
and chef, Robert St. John. He’s become
well known for his creative expressions,
both in the kitchen and through the written
word. His local restaurants speak for
themselves. For golfers visiting the area,
Timberton Golf Club is a must play.
Thrilling casino action and many
renowned golf courses come together along
Mississippi’s unforgettable Gulf Coast to
offer more than just a great golf vacation.
Combined with moderate annual
temperatures, a variety of lodging options,
historical attractions, exciting restaurants,
and musical outlets to enliven the senses,
the region is unlike any other golf
destination in the country. With non-stop air
service continuously being added into the
newly improved Gulfport/Biloxi International
Airport, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more
accessible than ever.

Join the thousands of golfers who
accept the challenge of more than 140
incredible courses in Mississippi, many
with exciting layouts designed by the
game’s legends. Take advantage of the
uncrowded atmosphere, affordable
packages, and superb accommodations.
Enjoy the spectacular scenery. And be sure
to live the local life after the 18th… from
world-class casinos and fine dining to
historic inns and good old Southern
cooking… from music’s roots and live
entertainment to museums and charter
fishing or boating. It’s all in Mississippi for
your enjoyment.
As the “Birthplace of America’s
Music,” Mississippi’s musical landscape is
much like the golf scene. It’s exciting and
varied and reflects regional influences. The
creation of the Mississippi Blues Trail a
few years ago began the story and with
the addition of the Country Music Trail the
picture is becoming clearer. Mississippi
has been instrumental in, not only the
birth, but also the growth and popularity of
musical genres such as blues, country
and, of course, rock and roll, thanks to its
most famous musical son, Elvis Presley.
And these musical styles are truly
American-made. The song lyrics boast of
our history and the beats and rhythms
reflect our diverse heritage.
The Mississippi Blues Trail takes
visitors on a musical journey through the
state to sites honoring B.B. King, Muddy
Waters, Son House and more. Much like
the Mississippi Blues Trail, which now
features over 180 markers, the
Mississippi Country Music Trail celebrates
Mississippi's rich heritage of country
music legends and chart toppers, such as
"The Father of Country Music," Jimmie
Rodgers, Marty Stuart, Charley Pride,
Conway Twitty and Faith Hill.
Live music can be sampled almost
every night of the week at a variety of
locations throughout the state, such as
Hal and Mal’s in Jackson, Ground Zero
Blues Club in Clarksdale, Proud Larry’s in
Oxford, and Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi.
As one of the largest casino
destinations in the country, Mississippi
offers gaming excitement throughout the
state. Celebrity entertainers, gourmet

dining, luxury accommodations and spas
turn Mississippi's casino resorts into
memorable, fun-filled vacations,
conventions and reunions. With easy
access to golf courses, waterways and
shopping, you can check into a single
casino hotel and enjoy a diverse and
fun-filled getaway.
Beyond the music and entertainment
in Mississippi, there’s the food. The
state’s cuisine defies categorization. And,
in some cases, it defies imagination. From
catfish to Comeback sauce, from tamales
to traditional Southern sweets, from
shrimp to slugburgers to sweet potatoes,
Mississippi's culinary heritage has food to
please every palate. The Magnolia State is
home to James Beard award-winning chefs
and noted national food writers, as well
as some of the best home cooks and outof-the way diners to be found anywhere.
Food and entertainment are a big part
of the draw to Mississippi. And although
visitors may initially come for the great
golf, they come back for the taste of our
southern cuisine, the glamour of our
world-class casinos, and the intrigue of our
deep, musical roots. Well, that and to play
another round, of course.
