Professor Dolan is an internationally renowned expert on happiness, behaviour and public policy and
author of the book ‘Happiness by Design’. His presentation will cover the development of measures of

National Grid has improved its staff performance by 8% which it believes amounts to £20 million in
increased productivity per year. It has achieved this through a radical redesign of its headquarters in
Warwick putting employees first; delivering a workplace that enabled people to work more productively
and collaboratively while allowing for flexibility. Simon Carter will share the lessons he and National Grid
learned when leading this change in their workplace.

This session, chaired by Nicola Gillen, will explore how changing work practices affect office
design. Trends include more cross disciplinary interaction, balancing collaboration and quiet work,
health and wellbeing in order to drive creativity and productivity.
Anna Bartle will share with us Estée Lauder Companies’ workplace strategy for their new HQ in central
London. Their workspace has been specially crafted to support collaboration, agility, creativity and
innovation, and has been designed with employees at its heart. The intention is to create a strong focus
on health and wellness, core values of the companies.
Felicity Roocke will give us an insight into HASSELL’s landmark project for Medibank in Melbourne,
Australia which has a strong focus on wellness, collaboration and activity based working.
Phil Doyle will talk about how a more sustainable interior environment, based on natural
ventilation, personalised control and wearable technology, can improve productivity and the health
and wellbeing of workers.

Spaces are defined by the facades that enclose them, the structures that frame them and the materials that are used within them. Our understanding of how materials shape the workplace and impact on
the psychology and physiology of the people within them is growing all the time. Our affinity for daylight
and natural materials has long been understood by designers but the need to ensure a healthy working
environment has led to an ever growing need for more information and new sustainable materials that
can be used in the workplace. Marta Galinanes Garcia will chair this session.
Annabelle Filer is the curator of the UK’s leading materials Sourcing and Advisory Gallery which is
dedicated to finding innovative, new age and sustainable materials for architects and designers to use in
interior spaces.
Fred Pilbrow who has been involved in the design of the Heron Tower, The Fancis Crick Institute and Imperial College’s new campus will share with us his work into the use of a variety of materials to improve
the aesthetics and environment within interior spaces.
Tim Snelson is an expert in timber construction and will use his knowledge of this natural material to
argue the case for its greater use in an office environment, the attributes that this material brings
and its perception in the market place.

Dr. Duncan Wilson is Director for the Cities research programme at Intel Labs Europe and he will share
his thoughts on how Big Data and the Internet of Things will impact on the world of the office worker.
Intel Labs have a long history of research into the use of computer technology in the office environment.
Trends around Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud will be used to introduce thinking on how technology
is influencing the workplace.
Darren Smith will talk about Philip Lighting’s collaboration with Deloitte in Amsterdam to help to create
‘The Edge’ one of the worlds most sustainable buildings. The power over Ethernet LED lighting solution
also enables building users to interact with their environment through their mobile phones using Visible
Light Communication (VLC).
Mike Darby CEO of Demand Logic will showcase his company’s easy-to-use web based system that uses
data analytics and infographics to find energy-savings and performance improvements in the workplace.
Mike Stych will talk about the Intellidesk which Arup have been developing to respond to the needs of
the latest generation of office workers and in particular the ‘tech’ community.

A leading workplace strategist and former Chairman of DEGW, Despina focuses on the impact of the built
environment on business performance. This session will look at the growing importance on health and
wellbeing in the office and how an office can be designed to generate the best
business performance from its occupants. Despina will comment on the mornings presentations and give
her latest thinking on wellness at work. She has extensive experience working with corporate
occupiers and developers all over the world, regularly publishing and speaking at conferences. Despina is
a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.

Ray Hammond, Futurologist and Author
To conclude our half day conference we will hear from the futurologist Ray Hammond about the impacts
of newer technologies on the built environment and the direction this will take in the future. Ray has
been conducting research on the future for the last 35 years and in 1984 his book The Online Handbook
was published. It was the world’s first book to describe the commercial potential of the internet and to
identify the importance of the search facility. He will apply his knowledge of the world of technology to
the office workplace and identify the key drivers which will determine the future of the workplace.

Joining Dimension Data Group in 1997, Kari is the Managing Director at Dimension Data
Advanced Infrastructure (DDAI), where he has developed the business unit to take full
advantage of the burgeoning ‘intelligent buildings’ sector, driving revenues to £30million+ in
just three years.
Before joining DDAI, Kari worked for several construction companies, as well holding a variety of roles in the
telecommunications and networking industry. As such, over his 20 year career, Kari has developed a unique
blend of knowledge and experience in business, construction and technology.

Anna Bartle is a senior communications professional with over 20 years experience in
consumer brands across a variety of sectors including beauty, fashion, FMCG, retail, automotive and technology. Having worked for some of the most well known and best-loved brands in the

Her role also includes responsibility for the company’s Corporate Responsibility communications as well

Professor Dame Carol Black DBE, FRCP, FMedSci
Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge University, Expert Adviser
on Health and Work to the Department of Health and Chair of the
Nuffield Trust
Professor Dame Carol Black DBE, FRCP, FMedSci is Principal of Newnham College
Cambridge, Expert Adviser on Health and Work to the Department of Health England and to Public
Health England, and Chairman of the Nuffield Trust for health policy. She is also a member of the
Welsh Government’s Bevan Commission on health in Wales, Chair of the RSSB’s Health and Wellbeing Policy
Group, and a member of PwC’s Health Industries Oversight Board .
In November 2011 when National Director for Health and Work she completed as Co-Chair an independent
review for the UK Government of sickness absence in Britain. The recommendations of this report are now
being put in place, with for example a national Fit for Work Service.
Professor Black is a past-President of the Royal College of Physicians, of the Academy of Medical Royal
Colleges, and of the British Lung Foundation. The Centre she established at the Royal Free Hospital in
London is internationally renowned for research and treatment of connective tissue diseases such as
scleroderma.
She is a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, of the Work Foundation and of Uppingham School. In
November 2013 she was named one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK in the BBC Woman’s Hour list.
Simon Carter
Head of Corporate Property, National Grid
An Electrical Engineer by training, Simon joined National Grid in 1993 as a Network Operations Manager taking responsibility for the Safety Control Centre consolidation team. Since
then he worked on a research project while living in Japan working for Tokyo Electric Power Company and numerous other roles in Finance, M&A and Engineering policy and Overhead line R&D.
Simon moved into Property as the UK Property Manager and has been with Property since, responsible for
various activities including the environmental aspects associated with the £5.2bn sale of four Gas Distribution Networks. He also worked in the North East USA for two and a half years on the merger of National Grid
& Keyspan including the identification of merger synergies.
More recently, he has returned to the role of Head of Corporate Property for National Grid managing an estate
of c.1000 properties from larger offices, control & data centres to operational depots and substations. The
supply chain is c.1100 strong and managed by an internal team of c.55. Annual spend is c.£100m.
Simon lives in Shakespeare country in central England with his wife and has two grown up daughters both of
whom have now flown the nest and are making their own careers.

Professor Derek Clements-Croome
Emeritus Professor, University of Reading
He now offers strategic advice to clients, designers and facilities managers on attaining and managing healthy and sustainable environments in buildings of all types. He researches, writes and lectures
on these issues for companies and wider audiences nationally and internationally in China, Australia,
New Zealand, Poland and Finland particularly. Some of his books have been published in Chinese
and Russian. He edits and founded the Intelligent Buildings International first journal published by
Earthscan (now Taylor and Francis) in 2009.
Organising Committee
Derek Clements-Croome worked in the building design and contracting industry
before entering university life. He has founded and directed courses including a BSc
in building environmental engineering at Loughborough University in 1970 and an interdisciplinary MSc in Intelligent Buildings at Reading University in 1996 covering design and
management. He has also worked in architecture and building engineering at the University of Bath
(1978-1988).
Derek is a Commissioner on air quality for Hammersmith and for the Zerofifty Commission for Haringey. He is also Building Environmental Expert for CABE; a Fellow of BRE.

Anthony Coumidis

Anthony, a chartered engineer, has been to prison several times in recent years, and was nearly
shot on the roof of one of the Royal palaces in England. His prison visits were to inspect geothermal
energy generation systems – and his rooftop scare was while talking on his mobile phone while inspecting one senior Royal’s water tanks…
Anthony, who is in charge of McBains Cooper’s Greece office, also has an international background:
of Greek origin born in Egypt, multi-lingual, loves Italian food, rates the Bahamas as his favourite
destination, the skylines of New York and the City of London as the best – and was once a forklift truck
driver in the port of Alexandria.
He pioneered the use of geothermal energy in the United Kingdom, with his ideas and solutions going
on to become industry-standard. He has extensive experience of designing and implementing sustainable solutions for a wide variety of building types, and has won numerous industry awards and
commendations.

Mike Darby
CEO, Demand Logic
Mike Darby is a building energy management systems specialist. He has worked in the building services engineering field for over 25 years.
Mike has designed and delivered many BEMS projects including multi-million pound installations for
major investment banks and data centres, focusing on energy efficiency and business critical systems, as
well as developing interoperability solutions.
Mike is currently CEO at Demand Logic Ltd, a clean-tech start up developing a web service that utilises
big data and on-line collaboration to provide low cost insight into energy consumption, comfort, as well as
condition-based maintenance in commercial buildings.
He is passionate about making buildings work better.

Paul Dolan is a Professor of Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics and
Political Science. As an internationally renowned expert on happiness, behaviour and public
policy, he conducts original research into the measurement of happiness, its causes and consequences and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications. In 2010, he was seconded to the cabinet office
to embed the ‘mindspace’ report into policymaking which he co-authored.
He has previously worked with Daniel Kahneman at Princeton University, written the questions for the Office
for National statistics in measuring wellbeing and he regularly advises global corporations in
behavioural economics.
His debut and best-selling book ‘Happiness by Design’ was published by Penguin in August last year and has
been bought in over a dozen countries.

Phil is a founding Director of 5plus Architects based in Manchester. Phil has particular
expertise in the design and delivery of commercial office buildings acting on behalf of both developers and end users alike and including the cross over between architecture and interiors.
This expertise is founded on many years experience in leading the design and delivery of numerous award
winning projects. With an interest in sustainable office design, many recent projects have adopted low energy
and environmentally friendly principals.
Phil has been a member of the BCO since 2003 and currently sits on the BCO Northern Chapter Committee
and the BCO Technical Affairs Committee.
He was also on the BCO Northern Judging panel from 2011 – 2013.

Annabelle Filer is one half of the design partnership Filer+Cox, established in 1990 and CEO of
SCIN ™ , the UK’s largest Independent Materials Library and resource working across the Globe
to provide research and insight based upon their materials knowledge to businesses.
SCIN ™ was founded in 1993 and now works for over 179 Architectural Practices as well as businesses from
hotel, property development, fashion, consumer products , automotive and trend forecasting companies as
well as chemical companies, asset management and manufactures. Part of their joy is to be able to work with
young and emerging talent to help them to refine or meet potential commercial partners.
Annabelle trained as an Architect but her passion is the discovery and promotion of materials, which for

Marta Galinanes Garcia
Associate Director, AKT II
Marta joined AKTII in 2001 and is currently an Associate Director leading a team of engineers
on a diverse range of projects.
Her experience is broad and covers international projects including the Puna Cricket Stadium with Hopkins
and Gardermoen Airport Terminal 2 roof structure to Commonwealth House and the redevelopment of Blossom Street in London.
Marta has a special interest in the future of the industry and currently sits on the IStructE Structural Futures
Committee and recently formed part of the judging panel for the Ada Huxtable Prize and Moira Gemmill Prize
for Emerging Architecture.

Nicola Gillen
Director, AECOM
The majority of Nicola’s work focuses on partnering with clients globally to drive programs of change.
This involves capturing organisational demand, translating this into strategic briefing documents or
workplace strategies, implementing design solutions across geographies and
business lines. Motivating and maintaining change is at the heart of this work. Nicola worked across
North America, the Far East and Europe.

Nicola is an architect with a business degree. This provides her with a complimentary
perspective on the physical and business environments, through understanding the complex and often contradictory interests of the owner, users, designers and managers of buildings. Nicola leads Workplace Strategy at AECOM for EMIA.

Ray Hammond
Futurologist and Author
Ray Hammond is Europe’s most experienced, most successful and most widely published futurologist. For over 30 years he has researched, written, spoken and broadcast about how major
trends will affect society and business in the future.
In 2010 he was honoured with a UN gold medal for services to futurology by Mikhail Gorbachev.
Ray is also a successful and proven business leader and serial entrepreneur. In 1974 he co-founded the
company that today publishes The Daily Express, The Daily Star and OK! magazine.
After selling his shareholding advantageously in that company he founded and led International Magazines
plc which he later sold to EMAP International in a multi-million pound deal.

Despina Katsikakis is a globally renowned expert on the impact of the built environment on
business performance. A former Chairman of international consultancy DEGW and recently
with Barclays Corporate Real Estate, Despina has 30 years’ experience working with international

Fred Pilbrow

Over 25 years of practice, Fred has been responsible for designing a number of significant
London projects including the Heron Tower whilst a Partner at KPF and the Francis Crick Institute currently under construction whilst a Partner at PLP Architecture.
Fred Pilbrow founded Pilbrow & Partners in February 2013 where he is leading the design of a 600 bed residential development on behalf of Knight Dragon at Peninsula Riverside currently under construction. Fred’s
proposals for the renovation of the Grade II listed 3 Orme Square are also currently on site.
Fred has particular experience in working in sensitive historic environments. For PPR Pilbrow & Partners are
refurbishing 2-3 Robert Street a Grade II * listed terrace which restores the historic Adam interiors as well as
the apartment designed by Edwin Lutyens for JM Barry where Peter Pan was written.

Felicity Roocke

Felicity Roocke joined the HASSELL London studio in 2012 and leads the interior design and

Tim Snelson
Associate Director, Arup
Tim Snelson is an Associate Director at Arup, with 25 years’ experience of delivering
innovative structural solutions to landmark projects.
He has recently designed a number of fast-track timber buildings, taking timber into new market
applications. He actively promotes timber design skills in Arup through their global knowledge systems and
across the industry through conferences and papers.
Tim led the structural design of Sky’s Believe in Better Building, a landmark office building using glulam and
CLT structure, delivered from inception to completion in one year. The project has been globally recognised for
its scale and speed of delivery, as well as its exemplar sustainability with net zero embodied carbon.
The socially-focussed architecture promotes social collaboration and wellness, whilst providing Sky with the
ability to use the building for a multitude of different functions, through flexible spaces and moving walls.

Mike Stych
Director, Arup
Michael Stych is an award-winning building services engineer, project leader and director
with Arup in London. He has more than twenty years’ experience in building services design,
and has worked on projects in the UK, USA, Europe and Asia. He is recognised as an industry
leader with expertise in the integration of technology in building services systems.
Mike is particularly skilled in the design of innovative, low-energy building services that are responsive to
the needs of users, and of working closely with architects, structural engineering colleagues, contractors and
building developers to fully achieve early-stage ambitions. His approach is always to consider the building
user and ways to improve function.
He is a member of the British Council for Offices’ Technical Affairs committee and is involved in setting UK

Dr. Duncan Wilson
Director, Intel Labs Europe
Duncan Wilson works for Intel Labs Europe as Director of ICRI Urban IoT and is responsible
for driving the research agenda of the London based institute. The Intel Collaborative Research
Institutes (ICRI’s) are Intel-funded, jointly-led research collaborations between Intel, the Future
Cities Catapult and the academic community. At ICRI Urban IoT, researchers at UCL and Imperial College are
developing community scale solutions that make cities a better place to live. They focus on the urban experience delivering human centric services that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. He
is currently working on large scale deployments of sensor networks in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park,
London.
He has a background in foresight and innovation in cities (Arup), co-created the Drivers of Change concept
and has a personal research focus on the Internet of Things in the built environment. His EU and nationally
funded research merges interests in sensing and monitoring and creating interactive, ambient displays that
solicit and feedback information with the intent of influencing behaviour. He was a member of the European
Commission Expert Group on the Internet of Things and is currently running a local to teach 9-11 year olds
the beauty of computing. Duncan is a Chartered Engineer (IET), has a PhD from University College London in
