W
e try to stay out of politics, but there are currently two very important
issues which need everyone’s attention. The first is the so called “Food
Safety Bill”, H.R. 2749. Sounds O.K. Who doesn’t want a safe food
supply, especially in light of the recent food recalls, both human and
pet? This bill has already passed the House, been read in the Senate twice and now
referred to committee. It has the potential to undermine organic and small farmers
and could do away with farmer’s markets, road-side vegetable stands and maybe
even your own personal garden. Please read the GlobalBrief on page 10, Legislation
Update then call your Senator and urge them not to pass this bill in its present form.
Secondly, there is a lot of controversy over mandatory vaccination for EVERYONE against the swine flu. Please educate yourself on this subject (nvic.org) and
if you are against it, take action. We will simply take a major stand here against
any form of mandatory vaccination against any disease for any reason, the most
important word being “mandatory”. Please don’t remain silent.
Sally Fallon Keynote Speaker at Conference
The 2009 Farm and Food Leadership Conference will be held in San Antonio
on Sept. 14th and 15th at the Pearl Brewery. The conference will pull together
non-profit leaders, farmers and ranchers, farmers market organizers and local
foods activists from across the country for two days of discussions. “Issues critical
to the survival of small farmers will be discussed” says conference organizer Judith
McGeary, executive director of the Austin-based Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance. “This is the third year this conference has been held,” McGeary noted, “and
attendance continues to increase as more and more people discover how important the survival of small farmers and ranchers is to our nation’s food supply.”
The two-day event features speakers on issues including food safety bills in
Congress, genetically modified foods, national animal identification, organic certification, climate change and community food access. “The agenda is designed to
educate attendees on the issues facing independent agriculture and give them the
tools they need to become vocal advocates,” McGeary noted.
Keynote speaker for the conference is Sally Fallon, president of the Weston
A. Price Foundation, whose topic is “The Health and Economic Benefits of Raw
Milk.” See farmandranchfreedom.org for more details.

science and art.
S
ubtle knowledge of the
ancient mysteries of the
Life Force energy, evolved in
the Orient over thousands of
years, has been organized into
a clear-cut science by Grand
Master Choa Kok Sui. This
system of knowledge, called
Pranic Healing, is now taught in the West by the Grand
Master’s senior disciple, Master Stephen Co. A teacher of the
system of Pranic Healing, Master Stephen Co’s “miracles”
are described as nature¹s certain response to the conscious
direction of life force energy (chi or prana). He will be in
Austin presenting “Experience The Energy of Your Own Life
Force” at Unity Church of the Hills, 9905 Anderson Mill
Rd. on September 21st at 7 p.m. Then on September 22nd
at 7 p.m. he will present “Rapid Emotional Healing for
Relationships: The Energetic Approach” at First Unitarian
Universalist Church, 4700 Grover Ave. Only a love donation is requested at either presentation
Pranic Healing training is designed to empower and
nnnnmtap into an individual’s own latent ability. Master Co
explains, “All human beings are born
with the incredible power to consciously,
purposefully direct their life force energy,
the foremost power in nature. The legacy
of Oriental masters is the tremendous
development and refinement of the ability
to apply these subtle, natural laws. Today,
anyone can realize these seemingly magical abilities to harness and direct nature.

A Women’s Apprenticeship
Circle with HeatherAsh Amara
T
he Toltec Center of
Creative Intent is
pleased to announce
their newest program
specifically designed
to support women in
reclaiming their Divine
Feminine and embodying their power,
depth, purpose, and wild joy! In the busyness of our everyday lives, it is easy to
disconnect from our source and passion,
or get confused on how to create our next
step. As women we are domesticated to
put our energy towards the needs of others
and to fear our own wildness. We often
dull ourselves energetically to stay safe
and be good girls. We think about living
a spiritual life and being in service to the
divine, but so often our innate priestess
potential lies dormant and unclaimed.
Thirteen Moons is dedicated to energizing
and inspiring women to awaken the wisdom of the priestess: the creative, intuitive,
seed of depth that lies at our core.
Thirteen Moons will meet once a
month at NiaSpace in South Austin starting in October. Space is limited. For more
information visit thirteenmoons.us or call

Holographic Chips™ are a revolutionary
new technology using tried and effective
homeopathic treatments devised over the
past 3000 years. The Holographic Chips
are computer programmed holograms
which when applied to a person or animal, react with the natural bio-magnetic
field surrounding the body, causing minute positive disruptions of the
bio-field and causing the body to balance its own energies. When the
CieAura Holographic Chip is applied to specific acupuncture areas,
results such as an increase in energy, increase in stamina, deeper, more
restful sleep, pain relief and other reactions occur, depending on the
program formula of the Holographic Chip and the placement. They
are applied as a simple decal on the body or clothing and are totally
non-invasive and without any chemical component.

Legislation Watch
Pending Food Safety Bill Could
Harm Organic Farmers
A national
food safety
bill called
the Food
Safety Enhancement
Act of 2009
was passed
by the U.S.
House of
Representatives in
July and now goes to the Senate. It gives
the Food and Drug Administration more
power to deal with food safety problems,
but it also imposes a costly one-size-fitsall regulatory scheme on small farms
and local artisanal producers, the same
as if they were multinational corporations. As it now stands, the bill threatens
to undermine organic farmers and others
producing for local markets, advises
the Organic Consumers Association
(OrganicConsumers.org), and could
easily put many small farms out of
business. OCA advocates: “H.R. 2749
needs to draw a clear line between
small local growers and industrial/
factory farms and processing plants,
where food-borne pathogens incubate,
flourish and spread.”

Tour de Force Global
Project Gets People Talking
The Global Oneness Project offers a
free, online living library of video shorts
that explore how the radically simple
notion of oneness is made practical in
our increasingly complex world. Since
2006, filmmakers have been traveling
the globe gathering stories from creative
and courageous people who show how
we can all better share our world.
“The point of the Global Oneness
Project,” says founder and Director
Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee, “is to remind
people that they are part of an interconnected whole—and to offer them hope.
We’re exploring a new set of values that
aren’t based on greed. We want to tell
a new story that honors the potential of
human beings having a positive relationship to the world around them.”
Concerned thinkers comment on
the fields of sustainability, conflict
resolution, spirituality, art, economics,
indigenous culture and social justice. Narratives illustrate how, when
people shift their focus away from
personal fulfillment toward the needs
of the community, innovative and lifesustaining solutions are born. They
encourage each of us to reflect on the
state of the world and ourselves and
to listen to what is being asked of us
at this time of unprecedented global
transformation.
Join the conversation at GlobalOnenessProject.org, with links to social
networking sites.
Unprecedented Support for International
Day of Peace
United Nations peace bells throughout the world
will ring September 21 as the 2009 International Day
of Peace circles the globe in a 24-hour celebration
toward a sustainable world peace. For the first time, a
global broadcast via the Internet, radio and television
will spotlight the UN’s central purpose, “to end the
scourge of war for future generations.” Videos from
locations all over the world will stream over InternationalDayofPeace.org and CultureofPeace.org. Commemorations of present-day peacebuilders’ accomplishments
will be broadcast in dozens of languages on this day of calling for a cease-fire.
“Peace,” advised Albert Einstein, “can only be achieved by understanding.”
Peacebuilders focus on creating a long-term culture of peace.
Downloadable tools intended to catalyze year-round public networking and collaboration help jumpstart local initiatives. Imagine if every country began by donating
that single day’s warfare budget to a peace organization. Individuals can celebrate Peace
Day in as simple an act as lighting a candle and silently sitting in supportive meditation.
Find or post a community celebration at InternationalDayofPeace.org.

Living Abroad Expands Creative Perspective
Living in another country, a classic prescription for artists seeking to stimulate their imagination and hone their craft, may
actually expand a person’s mental creativity, according to new
research published by the American Psychological Association.
Researchers found that university students in the United States,
France and Singapore who have spent time abroad adapting to
a new culture tested higher for creative insights. Even mentally
recreating past experiences of living abroad by writing about
them temporarily increased their creative capacity.
Apparently, “There is some sort of psychological transformation that needs to occur when people are living in a foreign country,” in order to enhance creative problem-solving, observes study
co-author Adam Galinsky, Ph.D., of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern.
“Knowing that experiences abroad are critical for creative output makes study
abroad programs and job assignments in other countries that much more important,” notes another co-author, William Maddux, Ph.D., an assistant professor with
the INSEAD Business School. “This is especially true for people and companies
that put a premium on creativity and innovation to stay competitive.”

Online Swap
Cashless Bartering Soars via
Internet Match-ups
Websites and businesses promoting cash-free
transactions are booming from New Hampshire to New Zealand, as people find new
ways to make ends meet through bartering and
swapping just about any product or service. A
spokesman for Craigslist.org, a classified advertising service, says that bartering on the site has
doubled in the past year.
Ron Whitney, of the International Reciprocal Trade Association, reports that
about $12 billion worth of business-to-business bartering is transacted each year
around the world and that more than 250,000 U.S. businesses participated last
year. Now, individuals are following suit via websites and community networks.
Cowboy Churches
Faith Has Long Been Linked
to Western Way of Life
Texas is the epicenter of a welcoming, come-as-you-are, 40-year-old faith
movement that’s grown gangbusters
in the past decade. From Colorado to
North Carolina, wranglers meet in riding
arenas and barns and baptize believers in horse troughs. No one passes a
collection plate to the Stetson-and-spurs
crowd, but they may set out a boot.
The back-to-basics approach
works because, “The cowboy is a way
more simple human being,” says Royce
Gregory, pastor of the Life Brand Cowboy Church, in Ohio. Sermons are short
and abound with Western allegories.
“We get people who will not go
to church anywhere else, people who
haven’t been in 30 or 50 years,” says
Gary Morgan, pastor of the Cowboy
Church of Ellis County, Texas.
“Churches, from the very beginning, were looking to restore the early
church of Christ,” comments Kathleen
Flake, a professor of American religious
history at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, in Nashville, noting how
the cowboy churches’
message is classically
American. “It was just
a matter of how literal
they were about it.”

report shows that the number of homeschooled students has surged by 74

Leading reasons for the move include concerns about religious or moral

and the quality of academic instruction.
The institute’s research indicates that
home-schooled students score 15 to

Genes’
Response to
Stress
R
esearch now suggests that mind-body
techniques like yoga and meditation,
which can put the body into a state of
deep rest known as the relaxation response, are capable of changing how human genes behave in response to stress.
Many experts see the relaxation
response, which is characterized by
reduced oxygen intake, increased exhalation of nitric oxide and lowered psychological distress, as the counterpart to the
flight-or-fight stress response. The authors
say their study showed that the relaxation
response further acted to change the
expression of genes involved with inflammation, programmed cell death and the
handling of free radicals. They noted that
such deep relaxation practices have been
used across cultures for millennia to help
prevent and treat disease.
Dr. Jeffery Dusek, co-lead author of
the study at the Benson-Henry Institute,
and now with Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, remarks that, “The
relaxation-response-associated changes
were the opposite of stress-associated

T
he catalyst for
internal alchemy
is what I call
creative intent. This is
the ability to find new
ways of moving past
obstacles while staying
focused on the final
goal.
Creativity is one
polarity of life; a sense
of playful experimentation. Its energy is the
flow of art, and moves
as a spontaneous
response to stimuli.
Creativity stems from
dreaming and intuition, and a wide
horizon of perception.
It is the juiciness and
flow of life. It is often
unexpected, unexplainable, and unpredictable. Creativity is our unique expression of
life, manifested for pure joy. When we are in the river of creative flow, we do not seek
a reward or recognition; we tap into the unknown and for a moment, mystery moves
through us into form.
Creativity cannot be forced or scheduled, but it can be enticed and opened to. As
we make ourselves vessels and clear out our own doubts and rules, imagination often
comes to fill and soon overflow throughout us. We see new possibilities, new actions
and new ways of being. We are inspired to take the inner images, sensations and taste of
our inner world and make them tangible. This expression is not only what artists strive for
it is a vital force in helping us move through our own internal obstacles and fears.
To cultivate your own originality this week, start by listing
a problem in your life, and at least ten different ways to
work with it.
The places of limitation within us often stem from the ways we tried to feel
“safe” when we were children. For example, some grew up with a sense of scarcity in our lives: scarcity of love, scarcity of resources or scarcity of self-confidence.
In order to compensate, people make up fantastic agreements or strategies such
as: “I have to be in a relationship or I am not whole”: or “if I have a lot of money
in the bank, I am safe”: or “if I make sure everyone likes me, I know I am a good
person”. All examples of wacky internal resourcefulness!
As we become more aware and strive to change these agreements, obstacles
arise. Our old structure, which we put into place to make order in an unpredictable
world, fights to stay alive. Our habitual response is to follow the old pattern. “That
relationship just ended, so I must quickly find another one or I’ll be lonely and fragmented”. “I am feeling insecure, so I am going to go buy something expensive”. “My
friend is disappointed in me, so I must have done something wrong”.
When we are willing to risk being innovative, there are a million different ways
we can respond to stimuli. This is exciting! We can pull our head out of our tiny box of
responses and look towards infinity for our answers. We approach our obstacles and
fears with a sense of adventure. What will I do today? Who will
I be today? What will I learn about myself today? Yeehaaaa! For
example: Your relationship ends and you consciously choose
to be inventive, so you: have a divorce celebration with some
close friends to support you and cut the cords on this relationship. Spend a week in retreat, nourishing yourself with good
food and lots of long hikes. Take your new alone time to do
something you have always dreamed of trying. Shave your head
and dedicate yourself to meditation for a year. Volunteer to help
a child in need. Find a good therapist or spiritual guide. Choose
something that would be different from your usual pattern.
Be creative!
To cultivate your own originality this week, start by listing a problem in your life, and at least ten different ways
to work with it. Let some of
your ideas be crazy! Stretch
your mind. If you cannot
think of a problem, take the
examples above (feeling
insecure or disappointing a
friend) and list ten imaginative things anyone could do.
Then do at least one of these
ideas this week.
Open your innovative
flow more fully by doing one artistic activity
this week. Paint a dream,
visit a museum and wander
through the hallways feeling the art, dance wildly
under the moonlight, build
a fire and speak to the
flames or sing out loud in
public. Tapping into your
creativity may feel awkward
at first. Remember you are
breaking your own box,
which can feel frightening
or liberating or both simultaneously. Pay attention to
where you want to limit
yourself or where you are
uncomfortable stepping out
of your own comfort zone.
Pay attention to the ways
your mind goes into habit
and constantly challenge
yourself: how can I be ingenious in this situation?

Winning Against
Cancer, Diabetes
and Autism
An interview with Jeff Primack
J
eff Primack is not a
medical doctor, yet he
has helped hundreds
of people to naturally balance their blood sugar and
better control their diabetes. He has also worked
with autistic children
and greatly reduced their
symptoms through the application of sound dietary
principles. Even people
with life-threatening diseases have come to his seminars and
been successful in boosting their own body’s immune system
and Jeff has taught over 10,000 people how to utilize his Naturopathic medicine methodology. His goal is to touch as many
people’s lives as possible in a positive way, and to that end, has
priced his live seminars at just $99 for 4 days of healing.
Primack is quick to tell you that one of the secrets to good
health is “phytochemical-rich” foods and knowing what foods
(and what parts of the foods) one really needs. With little more
than fruits, vegetables, common grocery
herbs, and a three-horsepower blender,
people have dramatically increased their
overall health and their ability to fight
many life-threatening diseases.
Diabetes, in his opinion the #1 health
threat in America, has been diagnosed in
24 million Americans and is silently hiding
as “pre-diabetes” in another 20% of the
population. The typical American diet of
sugar-laden iced latte’s, sodas, muffins, pancakes, and ice creams makes sure that most
have a pancreas that is working overtime.
And diabetes can lead to heart disease and
stroke.
At his last conference, a woman who
had attended a previous seminar came
up on stage and told of the dramatic
changes in her type 2 diabetes, and she
is just one of hundreds he has seen do it
successfully. His protocol is not risky and
he does not ask people to stop insulin
use, yet often they are able to get their
blood sugar normal as they modify their
diets with their doctor’s knowledge.
Jeff teaches that several readily available vegetables, like swiss chard, contain
phytochemicals that are structurally similar to insulin. When a diabetic eats swiss
chard, their blood sugar comes down
naturally. If the diabetic is willing to follow specific dietary
guidelines, eliminate foods that cause diabetes and eat the
vegetables that contain this insulin-like phytochemical, then
many can balance their blood sugar naturally.
Swine Flu? Stronger immune systems can be created
using a 3 horsepower blender that masticates RAW food
particles making them small enough for anyone to get total
absorption. Primack’s entire family has been doing this for 5
years, and his grandma drinks a healthy smoothie everyday!
They can do it because it is fast, easy and tastes great.
Autism is growing at a startling rate and children are suffering needlessly; perhaps the most disturbing part of this news. By
enhancing nutrition, Jeff has witnessed a significant number of
mothers greatly decrease the effects of Autism in their children,
often in as short as a few months. One attended his seminar and
began giving her child smoothies with the cilantro he recommends (it is thought to be able to mobilize lead, mercury and
other heavy metals from the spinal cord and brain tissues). In
only 2 weeks, the child stopped slapping himself, began making
eye contact and stopped wetting the bed.
Primack teaches that phytochemicals cannot be obtained
by consuming fresh squeezed vegetable juice because they are
found only in the fiber (the seeds, stems, and skin), so the idea
being proposed here is not to purchase some miracle pill, but
to discover how to dramatically increase one’s overall health
by simply visiting the farmers markets and eating the foods
available and in the right combinations and amounts.
Jeff Primack will be teaching Food-Based Healing and Qigong
during “Qi Revolution at the Austin Convention Center, September 12th-15th. For additional information, call 800-298-8970 or

BIG
Moving On to
Ultimate Success

hether I’m coaching a billionaire CEO like Michael
Dell or a 12-year-old piano prodigy, I base my approach on the following bottom-line insights. They’ve
been gleaned from my 30 years of work in the field of relationship transformation and mind-body therapies.
First, it helps to understand that successful people operate in one of several zones: what I call the zone of competence, the zone of excellence or the zone of genius. Most
people stall out in the zone of excellence. Those who make it

big and are the happiest go all the way into the zone of genius.
Achieving that transition is what I call, “the Big Leap.”
The reason most people don’t make it into the zone of
genius is because of “the Upper Limit Problem.” This problem is the one obstacle that prevents us from attaining success and true happiness in all aspects of our life. It occurs
because we all have an inner thermostat that determines the
amount of love and success we allow ourselves. When we
exceed our setting, we tend to sabotage the grander experi-

ence, in order to return to the old, familiar
zone where we feel secure.
The trouble is that the thermostat was set
before we could think for ourselves, in early childhood. Later in life, when we hit our upper limit,
we often unthinkingly engage in self-defeating behaviors; we provoke arguments, get into accidents
or become sick, in order to bring ourselves back
down. Catalysts appear as feelings of guilt, stress,
doubt or worry, which we routinely manufacture
when we feel we have reached an upper allowable limit of positive feeling.
The good news is that if we can learn to spot
and transcend our upper limit, we can make a
rapid transition into our zone of genius. Asking
ourselves four questions can serve as our personal
launching pad. Answering these questions honestly
begets telling new perspectives that just may set us
flying skyward into the big leap. The four questions
are:
• What do I most love to do?
•What work do I do that doesn’t seem like
work?
•In my work, what produces the
highest ratio of abundance and
satisfaction to the amount of time
spent?
•What is my unique ability?
All of us deserve to experience wave after
wave of greater love, creative energy and financial
abundance, with out the compulsion to sabotage
ourselves. We start with the heartfelt desire to
eliminate our Upper Limit Problem—if we commit
to clearing it out of our consciousness, we’re more
than halfway there.

The hot, hotter and scorching sensation of capsaicin, found
primarily in the seeds and ribs of cayenne peppers, has its own
heat scale. While the amount of this chemical component varies among pepper varieties, the rule is, the more capsaicin, the
more fire in the belly and mouth. Bell peppers are at the bottom
of the Scoville Heat Scale, with zero units, while fiery habaneros score around 300,000 units, and pure capsaicin, at the top
of the list, measures a scorching 16 million units.
In recent years, researchers who have studied capsaicin
have surfaced some promising results. Evidently, eating these
spicy treats can help prevent and treat certain types of cancer, decrease and alleviate pain and help control weight.
Fight Cancer
In India, Mexico and other countries where hot peppers
are commonly used in traditional cuisine, cancer rates are
relatively low, according to the Globocan 2002 database.
This correlates with the results of a study conducted on
mice genetically modified with human prostate cancer
cells. Research by the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive
Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in collaboration with University of California, Los Angeles, demonstrated that the pepper extract not only killed approximately 80 percent of the cancer cells, but also dramatically curbed the growth of remaining tumors, which were
only one-fifth the size of those in untreated mice.
Capsaicin triggered a similar effect in human lung and
pancreatic cancer cells in a study conducted at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
Manage Pain
Over-the-counter topical capsaicin ointments, such as Zostrix
and Capzasin-P, currently provide thousands of individuals
with relief from the pain associated with osteoarthritis, sports
injuries and psoriasis. These peppery creams work by depleting the amount of a neurotransmitter called substance P, which
is believed to send pain messages to the brain. Many individuals experience a localized burning sensation when capsaicin
cream is applied to the skin, but this discomfort eventually
subsides with repeated use, and pain relief usually follows.
Offset Obesity
Capsaicin is found in various weight loss supplements
because it increases metabolic activity, which helps to
burn calories and fat. In 1999, the British Journal of Nutrition published a study revealing that women participants
who added two teaspoons of dried red pepper to their food
consumed fewer calories and less fat at their next meal, so
capsaicin may reduce appetite.
Spice Up a Diet
To make the most of the diverse health benefits associated
with eating hot peppers, we must add them to our everyday
diet. Any Mexican or Thai restaurant can easily satiate a hankering for heat. At home, adding hot peppers to meals is easy
and adds intriguing color and flavor to foods.
Note that regular consumption of hot peppers increases
one’s tolerance to capsaicin, and thus access to its benefits.
So experts recommend that we begin at the base of the
Scoville Heat Scale, with milder peppers, and gradually work
our way up to the tongue scorchers.
Start, for example, with pepperoncinis, which add
zing to salads and soups and then, step up to hotter varieties, like poblanos and jalapenos, perfect in pasta dishes,
rices and omelets. Maybe top a pizza with sliced wax
peppers. Finally, add a dash of cayenne pepper to spice
salsas, sauces and meat marinades.
Researchers and dieticians around the world are
excited about the proven and potential health benefits of
hot peppers. People everywhere are proving why, indeed,
some like it hot.

Children’s Intuition
A Special Key to Success in Life
by Catherine Crawford
A child’s intuition, or sixth sense, may be more important in the life of
a child than many people realize. Intuition helps alert kids to danger,
provides guidance in decision making and helps in problem solving,
enabling youngsters to jump more quickly to a solution. Nurturing
children’s intuition and keeping it alive helps them maintain a clear
connection to this inner
A
ll children are intuitive, but some are more highly so
and experience more intuitive messages, or perceptions, with greater frequency than others. They often
are unusually aware of the needs and feelings of friends,
parents, siblings and animals. These children may translate
the unspoken needs of younger siblings and pets with striking
accuracy and even pick up on the predominant feeling of a
group of people as they enter a room. Others may tune into
an unspoken family conflict or tell someone to be careful
before stumbling into an unknown situation.
In my psychotherapy practice over the past 20 years, I’ve
noticed that intuitive children who are raised with respect
for their insights and taught to manage the stressors that
can emerge with this trait generally grow up to be healthy,
balanced, intuitive adults. On the other hand, when highly
intuitive children learn to suppress their inner truth and stop
respecting their own inner compass, they suffer undesirable
consequences. Many manifest reduced self-esteem, selfdoubt, confusion in decision making and difficulties with
interpersonal boundaries as adults. They are more likely to
defer to what other people want, even at the expense of their
own health, boundaries and better judgment.
How to Support an Intuitive Child
In parenting and guiding, we can make a big difference
in supporting children’s intuition and empathy. Three keys are
to give kids positive feedback for these abilities, help them
learn how to deal with associated stressors and teach them
real-life skills designed with their individual abilities in mind.
Children’s messages to us can be simple and direct. Here
are ways we can help and support an especially intuitive child:
22
Austin
• Stay open to her perceptions without judgment.
• Try not to inflate or deflate her intuitive experience
when we respond to it.
• Help her see that her way of feeling and seeing life is an
important part of who she is, just like any other gift or talent.
• Realize that she may need our help in learning how to
manage the stressors associated with this innate lens
through which she sees the world.
• Let him know that he is never alone and we are available
to help him.
• If he has empathically taken on someone else’s mood,
aches, pains, or worries, help him to practice asking,
“Is this feeling mine?” Remind him that he’s not respon sible for anyone else’s feelings.
• If a child is stuck in a pattern of being in tune with others’
pain or the pain of the world, help him learn to switch to
being on the “self channel.” We can help him do this
through exercise, by encouraging him to express his feel ings in art, or even by taking a couple of slow deep
breaths along with us.
Perceptive children call for perceptive parenting. Parents
can help keep intuition strong in their children and help solidify this gift for life by adopting these supportive behaviors.

When Your Home Expresses
Who You Are

H
ome. It’s a small word for a universal idea, one that
resonates deeply with complex individual meanings
and associations.
Regardless of whether home is a room, apartment,
cottage or mansion, how homey it seems depends first on
two physical factors: light coming in on two sides and a
view of greenery or sky, according to Clare Cooper Marcus, professor emerita of the departments of architecture
and landscape architecture and environmental planning
at the University of California, Berkeley. “We yearn for
nature,” she observes. “Houseplants or a view of a garden is a universal desire.”
In her seminal book, House as a Mirror of Self: Exploring
the Deeper Meaning of Home, which resulted from her work
on a low-income housing project and a series of case studies,
Marcus came to understand that “People consciously and
unconsciously use their home environment to express something about themselves.” For Marcus, our evolving self-image
is directly reflected in the homes we create, like a chambered nautilus, around our deepest self.
Sometimes, we discover that we
have outgrown the shell in which
we currently live, and a change is in
order, remarks Jill Butler, an illustrator,
creativity coach and author of Create
the Space You Deserve: An Artistic
Journey to Expressing Yourself Through
Your Home. This could be the result
of a shift, as the result of downsizing
to a smaller home or again becoming
a single adult; a celebration of finally
being able to build a home or move to
the place of our dreams; or a milestone,
which might come in the form of a first
apartment or new baby.
“Creating a soul space, or a nest,
is not a new idea for most women,” says
Butler. “What might be new is creating
the nest that supports you and makes you
feel loved and nurtured when your world
might not. Taking the time to understand
the deeper need is the first step.”
How a House Becomes a Home
“A house is more than a roof over your head,” says
Butler, noting that it is far more than what it came to be
seen as in recent years as Americans’ primary savings account. “The whole idea of a house became skewed when
we worried more about resale value than actually living
there,” she continues. “It’s time to consider their return on
our emotional investment.”
A house becomes a home only as we put our own
personal, emotional imprint on it. “A home is peoplemade,” writes Alexandra Stoddard, author of Feeling at
Home: Defining Who You Are and How You Want to Live.
“Our home is our essence, the ultimate Earthly place
where we live and love and have our being.
“All the more reason to ask ourselves: Are we living
with harmony, fulfillment, and joy at home? Are we living
as well as we would like, or are we too often anxious, emotionally exhausted and stressed?”

Interior designer Kelee Katillac, author
of House of Belief: Creating Your Own
Personal Style, suggests we start by taking a
close look at what we see around us in our
home. “Homes that say nothing of who we
are—what we believe in and values that
we aspire toward—are places of tumultuous spiritual discontent,” she counsels. “By
filling the space around us with benign
objects—department-store clones with
matching accessories to fill every nook and
cranny—we lock ourselves into a gilded
cage of fashion for which our creative spirit has no key.”
Taking Stock
Before we can create a home that truly expresses our deepest self, we need to rediscover who we are now, where we are
in our life and what we really want. This calls for an assessment
or inventory, a “before” snapshot.
Thomas Moore, in Care of the Soul: How to Add
Depth and Meaning to Your Everyday Life, recalls a “reading” he did of one woman’s dwelling. “My idea was to
see the house’s poetry and alphabet, to understand the
gestures it was making in its architecture, colors, furnishing [and] decorations, and the condition it was in at that
particular time.” After the exercise, he notes, “We both felt
unusually connected to the place.” More, “I was motivated
to reflect on my own home and to think more deeply
about the poetics of everyday life.”
How well does our current home feel like we wish
it to? In Feeling at Home, Stoddard lists 15 elements that
contribute to the emotional intelligence of a home. In addition to the dual keys of light and a view outside, as Marcus
mentions, are color, comfortable furniture, change (periodic rearrangement of elements), privacy, fresh air, nature,
beauty, art, order, a working kitchen, a home library and
favorite objects. The latter may encompass heirlooms, childhood souvenirs and handcrafts.
“We begin by shaping our home environments into
places of inspiration and affirmation,” advises Katillac. “By
keeping our beliefs in front of us in our homes and by building our belief and our confidence through artistry in our own
home, we enter into an exhilarating process that affects our
lives on every level.”
Creative Renewal
“Although we tend to relegate creativity to the working artist,
all of us are creating all the time,” says Butler. Creativity at home
may begin with a notebook filled with pictures culled from magazines, paint chips, product literature and to-do lists. We have the
information and the ideas, now we must make it all happen.
Some creative house projects are relatively easy and
inexpensive to do ourselves. We can make a static space,
like a living or dining room, function better for how we really
live—make it more informal, colorful, or lived-in—by changing the type of furniture or its arrangement, advises Katillac.
Butler emphasizes that the secret to using every room lies in
setting up the room exactly as we want it.
We can happily engage all the senses with favorite
music, scented candles, fresh flowers, soft throws or silky
pillows and perhaps a garden, visible through a window. We
can repaint a room in a color we love. We can even make
our own artwork. We can decorate only with objects that
resonate with us, with less of an eye to the price.
“Living artfully might require taking the time to buy
things with soul for the home,” counsels Moore. “Good
linens, a special rug or a simple teapot can be a source of
enrichment, not only for our own life, but also the lives of
our children and grandchildren.”
Adds Katillac, “By surrounding ourselves with the trappings of our past successes, or with things we associate with
those who have achieved the success we want in our lives,
we begin to believe in the possibility of our dreams.”
When re-envisioning our home involves tearing out walls,
adding rooms or building from the ground up, it’s time to call
in help from experts: architects, interior designers, contractors,
plumbers and painters—the works. That can seem daunting at
first. But our sources share a secret: Find a professional with the
credentials you want for your project, and he or she generally will lead you to other qualified people.
“Each lead, each name or name of a service, leads to the
next lead,” advises Butler. “Each time you meet someone and
get help, he or she will answer questions and evoke more
questions yet to be answered, and on and on it goes.”
Finished ... for Now
When our home project is finished we’ll know, because
the space contributes to our well-being, says Butler.
“You’ll feel nurtured, nested, and protected. You’ll feel
at home.”
“Feeling at home is a way of life, an inspiring journey of
discovery as well as a bridge that leads us to great appreciation, reverence and beauty,” concludes Stoddard. A home that
feels like home is a place “where we’ve transformed our spirit
because we’ve learned how to follow our own heart.”
The effects, too, are ongoing. “Through this process
of belief-based decorating,” adds Katillac, “nothing seems
beyond transformation—negative thoughts, financial trouble,
loneliness—nothing.”

Seven Avenues of Self-Discovery
T
aking stock of what’s important to us
comprises two parts. First, we survey
our beliefs and values. Then, we
consider how our homes reflect, or don’t
reflect, those key beliefs and values. The
following toolbox can help spark progress.
Make Lists. Alexandra Stoddard has her
clients simply list 10 words that define
who they are now. The list might include
words like “love,” “green,” “food” or
“memories.” The next step is going from
room to room and seeing how well each
space mirrors these values.
Jill Butler also recommends listing all
of the activities we see happening in our
reinvented home. It helps evolve the types
of spaces needed and suggests innovative
uses for rooms.
Ask Questions. Butler recommends asking
the “W” questions. Where are you now?
What do you want? What do you see around
you? “Ask yourself what pleases you and
makes you feel good,” she says. Maybe it’s
a cozy color, a fresh breeze through the
window or family photographs. Are these
elements present now?
Embrace Opposites. Katillac asks couples
questions like, “What do you want more
of in your life?” She finds the commonality in their answers, but also celebrates the
opposites—what each person wants without considering the other person at all.
“Having figured out the For example, one might prefer Zen-like,

of two different ideas,” says Katillac. “It’s all about helping

Pause. Wait for emotions to settle. Don’t be in a hurry to
Take a Field Trip. Kelee Katillac suggests taking a “field

and values,” she advises. “List objects and areas that have
special meaning to you. This meaning may be known only to
you—more of an association. You may also see many things
there that have no meaning to you; it’s time to let those go.”
Clear Out Clutter. The accumulation of things we no longer really need signals “not wanting to let go or move on from a stage
in your life,” says Marcus, whether that stage is child-rearing,
professional life or a relationship that has changed or ended.
When we prune away things that are no longer necessary to us,
saying yes only to what we need, love and absolutely can’t live
without, we can better see the path ahead. We can sell, recycle,
donate or throw away things that no longer serve. Creating order
makes us feel more peaceful, confident and ready for creative
action.

A Conversation
with Wayne Dyer
by Ellen Mahoney
I
nternationally renowned author and
speaker Wayne Dyer, Ph.D., has devoted his life to helping others become
healthier and happier. He is the author
of more than 30 books and producer of
the motion picture, The Shift. His newest
book, Excuses Begone! How to Change
Lifelong, Self-Defeating Thinking Habits,
was inspired by the ancient teachings of
the Tao Te Ching.
Q. What common excuses do people
use in grappling with their conscience?
Excuses are the explanations we use for
hanging on to behaviors we don’t like
about ourselves; they are self-defeating
behaviors we don’t know how to change.
In Excuses Begone! I review 18 of the most
common excuses people use, such as “I’m
too busy, too old, too fat, too scared or it’s
going to take too long or be too difficult.”
We spend a big hunk of our lifetimes contemplating what we can’t have,
what we don’t want and what’s missing
in our lives. What we have to learn is to
put our attention and focus on contemplating what it is we would like to
attract, and not on what is missing.
Q. You talk about mind viruses. What
are these?
A virus has three purposes: to duplicate,
to infiltrate and to spread from one host
to the next. Ultimately, even a single
virus can shut down an entire system.
A mind virus is different in that
there is no form to it; these are ideas
placed in our heads when we are little.
We get programmed by well-meaning
people like our parents and their parents, our culture, religions and schools.
We get conditioned to believe in our
limitations and what’s not possible.
After a while, we start really believing these things are true. People who
have had self-defeating behaviors for a
long time, such as people who have been
overweight since they were children or
people with longtime addictions, actually
believe there is no other alternative.
Q. What’s the payoff for living a life
filled with excuses?
There’s a payoff for everyone. The
reason we hang on to self-defeating
behaviors is because it’s easier not to
take responsibility. If you’re blaming
something or someone else for the
way you are, then that person, those
people, those circumstances or those
energies, are going to have to change
in order for you to get better; that’s
“ Your synthetic mattress is slowly killing you!”
Traditionally manufactured mattresses use BORIC ACID (cockroach poison)
in the materials. Why would you allow yourself to breathe that in for 8 hours a
night or perhaps allow your newborn to be exposed to that in their crib?
We carry the complete selection of TRULY ORGANIC mattresses manufactured by

most likely never going to happen. It’s
also a way to manipulate other people.
Usually, making excuses is just
something we can get away with, rather
than challenging or changing ourselves.
If you want to change and you want your
life to work at a level you’ve never had
before, then take responsibility for it.
I’m not saying that a child who was
abused or beaten or abandoned made
that happen, but your reaction to it is
always yours. While you were four, you
didn’t know anything other than being
terrified and scared; you’re not four any
longer. Now [as an adult] you have to
make a choice and recognize that even
the abuse that came into your life offers
you an opportunity to transcend it, to
become a better person and even more
significantly, to help someone else not
go through what you did.
Q. What is your seven-question paradigm to help people change long-established habits of negative thinking?
The paradigm helps a person identify
the thought system, which is almost
always false, that is behind the rationale
for the continuation of excuses. It helps
them really look at excuses from an
objective point of view and realize that
everything they’ve been thinking is just
as likely to be not true as it is to be true.
I believe if you change the way
you look at things, the things you look
at change.
Q. When we look at our own lives and
think about the lives of loved ones,
what is key to living a healthy, happy,
love-based life?
The key is to trust in your own divinity,
to know that you are a piece of God,
and that you are like what you came
from. As a spiritual being, you have
Divinity within. When Albert Einstein
was asked about the impact of quantum
physics, he said, “It’s just all details, I
just want to think like God thinks.” And
God thinks in terms of creating, kindness, beauty and goodness.
