S. Tremel, President I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. It's hard to believe that almost a year has passed since we hosted the SPAAMFAA Winter Meeting. At this time last year we were all deeply involved in the final preparations. CAFAA Officers President Frank Tremel [email protected] Vice President T Cosgrove Jones [email protected] Treasurer Betty Radisch [email protected] Secretary Bernard J. Punte [email protected] Directors Lisa Lessin [email protected] Malden Miller [email protected] CAFAA has received two requests for assistance in the planning of events. The first is the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Alexandria, Virginia Fire Department. The tentative date for this event is July 2016. Early plans are calling for a short parade through Old Town Alexandria and pumping at the park along the River. The second event is The NATIONAL FALLEN F/F FOUNDATION'S Annual Stair Climb. The 2016 event will be held the end of September at the National Harbor, Oxon Hill MD near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Both organizations have requested a committee members from CAFFA to assist with the planning of these events. Volunteers are needed. Remember that the date of the annual dinner/meeting has been changed from February to Sunday, March 6. The date change takes us away from Valentine’s Day and hopefully the winter weather. We are requesting payment is with your reservations as last year we had a number of members RSVP and then did not attend. We provide the restaurant with a headcount based on the RSVP’s and are committed to paying for the number of dinners in the headcount. Elections will be held at this time The Annual SPAAMFAA Winter Meeting is coming up in February in Houston . There is a 5 year planning session on the agenda. I would like to designate a spokesman from CAFAA to attend that meeting to represent our interests. If you will be attending the Winter Meeting, please let me know.. One last item, the Annual Muster is coming up first Saturday in June in Westminster. We need committee members. The January meeting is scheduled to be held Sunday, January 10 (3 p.m.) at the Savage VFD station off Rt 1 in Savage MD. Hope to see you there. Membership Chuck Bollinger [email protected] Webmaster Victor McEntee Although this is the October/November/December issue of the Hose Reel, the focus is on the 2015 SPAAMFAA Summer Meeting & Muster in Syracuse. [email protected] For those of us CAFAA members who are not also members of SPAAMFAA, please pay particular attention to item #5 in the message from our own Steve Heaver (SPAAMFAA Trustee) regarding required SPAAMFAA membership going forward to satisfy insurance regulations. The 2016 SPAAMFAA Winter Meeting will be held in Houston February 17 - 20. At the summer membership meeting in Syracuse there was (as usual) heated discussion regarding attracting (and keeping) younger members to keep the SPAAMFAA organization alive. It's not just at the national level. We need members at the local level to step up and start taking a more active role. At both the national and the local level, the 'old timers' have been guilty of not making the newcomers feel welcome. Let's all do what we can to change that in CAFAA and start making a difference! The ‘Silver Trumpet’ will be issued only electronically starting in 2016 unless you specifically ask for a hard copy. I believe that there will be a charge of about $5 for this service. The $5-6,000 that we save from this change will help to pay for the new Archives now in Kansas City, MO. Greetings from National. We are steaming 2/3 speed toward our Winter Meeting in Houston and I hope that you will be there. In this email I’d like to mention a few items, at random, that I hope you will share with all of your members. Feel free to duplicate my email to them. 3. Please come to Houston, Texas, in February. At least send your chapter president or a representative! You are requested to send an official delegate to a special meeting to be held on Wednesday the 17th February starting somewhere between 10 and noon, in the hotel. We have a long-range planning meeting planned to drill down on where we want to be going for the next five years. These decisions will have a significant impact on our budget and our program. Pete West is requesting that you let him know who is coming from your chapter as the rep. His email is above. Last August I swapped regions with Andy Leider since I live in Maryland, famous for its CAFAA Crab and the Winter Meeting earlier this year, and he lives in up North. I will apologize for not writing earlier, but here we go. If you have concerns or ideas about SPA issues, please send them on to me, if you have not already contacted an officer, and I will do my best to see the problem resolved or the idea passed along. We have about 2,200 members tonight and I understand from Candy that we should be looking at 2,400 in a week or so. So here is one of our problems: during the last year over 240 cheques from members were deposited, or maybe not, but none were entered into the records. Candy has been working as our Membership Sec’y pro temp. to get us back on line. If you have members who sent in payment for dues in 2014 or 2015 and have not been receiving EE or ST, please notify Candy right away. Maybe send her a photocopy of your cancelled cheque. 4. Dues will be going up with the renewal for 2016. We have not increased the dues for about 12 years and we are looking at building the Archives (more anon) and expanding the program to maybe, help student members and families coming to meetings with children. The increase for an individual will be $5. Continued on next page 3 (Continued from previous page) Odds & ends from 5. While I’m dealing the money issue, I may as well get into a really unpleasant one, namely, whether members of chapters should be required to be members of the national. This has been argued since I was President back in the 80s, and there are pros and cons on both sides. The point that I want to make here is that we no longer have a choice (very un-American, you say, shades of 1776): the insurance company will require that the chapters using national insurance, will have all of their members be on the role of national. Bill and David have looked into this for two years and it is an unmovable wall. So we have a little time to comply and I urge you to start handing out SPA application forms (copy whatever you have at hand as long as the membership secretary’s address is changed to not be Avery Leider) at each meeting, show around copies of EE, talk about the archives, and get the conversation going. the 2015 Summer National meeting Cosgrove accepting plaque from SPAAMFAA President, Bill Dundas Malden displaying the club 'colors' at the hotel. (AFTER his trip to Canada with the Class of '68 6. The Archives & Library has been moved from Hershey where it was established 30 years ago, to Kansas City, Missouri, at the HQ of the ATHS. We are paying them rent and we are trying to raise money to pay for a parttime staffer so think about giving a little something to the Lee Soderbeck fund with your dues renewal!! Teams of members and friends have been moving about three tons of material out there, setting up shelving, and next (January 10-14) to re-shelve everything. If you are interested in helping in January, please contact me directly. Ed Peterson pulled everything together to prepare for the move and he will continue to be our archivist. For the next three months or more, until we get the system set up, we will not be able to handle inquiries, and members will not be visiting the stacks. After that there will be a new digital catalogue that you will be able to access using your SPA membership code. The next step will be to start digitizing images (this is where we especially need money) and you will be able to search on line through most of our holdings. An exception will be the pages of books which can be accessed via the Library of Congress. Please note this important point: SPAAMFAA will now own its archives once again. If you are considering donating part(s) of your collection, please contact Ed at your convenience. 2-D stuff only! 7. Finally, SPA is launching a much needed annual fund drive. This will give the membership and the community at large, a regular opportunity to contribute to our programming. These gifts will be tax exempt. A lot more information will be coming out later this month or early January when you receive your dues notice. I know that I’ve covered a lot of material and I’m not going to sit here and say that one thing is more important than another. I’d just ask that you read this over, and think about one or two items that ring your bell. Happy Advent! See you in February. I’ll write again. Tours included a trip on Thursday to the New York Museum of Transportation in Rush NY for a display of apparatus by members of the Genesee Valley Chapter, a ride on a trolley, views of their model railroad layouts and the streetcars and trolleys they are restoring. Then the bus took the group to the Capen Fire Museum in Brockport NY, with lunch provided by the Genesee Valley Chapter. After that was a trip to Rochester Fire HQ, where several pieces “stopped by” for photo opportunities. On Friday, Retired Syracuse Deputy Chief Reeves took the group on a tour of Syracuse stations 12 (where “Big Bertha” still sits in the bay it used to respond from), 3 (now a museum owned by Don Herb), 5 (home to Engine 5, Truck 3, Haz-Mat 1 and Chief 2) and the city’s Training and Maintenance facility. At the meeting, it was revealed that members will be getting Silver Trumpet electronically starting in 2016. If you still wish a hard copy you will have to pay for it. Also, dues are being raised by $5.00 per year. CAFAA was given an award for the excellent job the chapter did at the 2015 winter meeting. There was a parade to the muster site (there are several videos on YouTube) and there was drafting (there are videos out there for that as well). 5 6 Check out Anita Ford's nationwide listing of parades, musters and special events on the CAFAA website (www.cafaa.net) My name is David Brown from Eastern North Carolina. I am contacting chapters in search of a drivers side windshield for a 1976 American LaFrance Century Series Pumper that I am restoring . If you have any contacts that may assist me with this, please advise. David Brown 919-422-1949 [email protected] I have two wooden fire truck wheels with solid rubber tires that if someone was interestes in them, they are available to someone who will use them. They are extremely heavy and will require several people or a liftgate to lift them. If you know of anyone who is interested, please have them contact me at this e-mail address.
