The quarterly publication of the Bethesda Mission bethesdamission.org April 2016 • Vol. 2 Let the “Fireproofing” Spread! by Scott Dunwoody, V.P. of Business Development p on the Hill, literally, at the top of Herr Street, “U headed east from Cameron Street, is a small Center, birthed inside an old closed-down fire station. Bethesda Mission’s Youth Center was created in 1990 as a beacon of hope in the Herr Street community. Across the street is the Harrisburg Cemetery, representing our past, but the Youth Center represents our future. Inside, virtually every weekday, year round, our children find a safe place to learn, grow, exhibit community spirit, and receive God’s love. Few people are familiar with this less visible, but nonetheless, important work the Mission has been doing for the past 25 years with our young people and their families at the Youth Center. In reality, this facility is truly functioning as a Community Center.” Rhonda Mays, local journalist and parent of children impacted by Youth Center The children and teens coming to our Youth Center, and their families, are being fireproofed to cope with and absorb challenges they face . . . to find hope and success, all from a foundation of experiencing the love of God expressed through the mentoring and nurturing of dedicated, gifted adults. On the surface, the Center is a safe place for the youth to go after school and during the summer, but once the child has been there for more than a few weeks, they begin to feel that it is a second home. The Community Center provides our youth with an outlet for their energy, anger, creativity, joy and pain, all within a foundation of faith in Christ to build their lives.” Rhonda Mays Presently the Community Center is reaching 50-75 at-risk children, teens and families. This expansion/ renovation project will enable Bethesda in the near future to impact 150-200 kids and families in the Herr Street community, setting the stage for a wonderful legacy to be grown over the next 25 years. at Camp Hebron with 20 boys attending; it was life changing as these teens experienced God’s creation, a lot of athletics, and very probing looks into God’s word. $2,500 is the cost per retreat for 20-25 ($100 per teen); we envision holding 8 per year, for teenage boys and girls. What occurs too often in their world is contrasted with images from our first Teen Takeover Retreat. The renovated and expanded land and facilities will enable a much greater variety of indoor and outdoor activities and services for children, teens and adults. The newly acquired .55 acres/10,000 sf former printing building will offer a legitimate gym/Activity Center for athletics (by raising the roof to 22’), creative arts, education and IT support systems, music studio, banquets/large events, outdoor play area, senior activities, etc. In reaching the teenagers, one exciting opportunity has emerged over the past year, entitled Takeover Retreats. The first retreat was held in March, 2015 2 PO Box 3041 • Harrisburg, PA 17105 • 717-257-4442 • bethesdamission.org The quarterly publication of the Bethesda Mission April 2016 • Vol. 2 a in ch g Ch il d r n R e e Bethesda Mission’s Community Center Staff “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” - Jeremiah 29:11 COMMUNITY CENTER en ie s T e s & Fa l mi Bethesda Mission’s Community Center Staff Harrisburg Rotary Foundation Funds Teen Takeover Retreats! Bethesda Mission Community Center (formerly Youth Center) has begun a new initiative to take Harrisburg at-risk teenagers on meaningful retreats throughout the school year. These retreats are designed to allow for greater focus on God, more opportunities for mentorship, and less distractions in a beautiful setting where positive relationships are nurtured. Our goal is to have 8 retreats (4 for girls and 4 for boys) with 20 teens at each retreat. Thank You Harrisburg Rotary Foundation for funding 2 of these retreats! “FIREPROOFING” OUR CITY! The community has embraced this idea of change and has offered support into this new endeavor of transformation we are undertaking. With all the violence that has been in the city, people are hungry for change and desperately seeking hope. In the eyes of many the youth are lost and they just don’t care. To many they have no value of life or respect for fellow man. I often ask myself, what is it that causes an individual to think it is okay to take a life? What will it take for true change to come? In a world or even a city that seems to have lost hope, what can we do to restore this lost art? Isaiah 40:31(NIV) says, “But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” At the Youth Center we have many families, children and teens, and even community members who need help in renewing their strength. With the Father’s help we believe that the Youth Center can pour His love over this community. They will renew their strength with hope in God restored. How does one restore hope to a family whose son was killed? Or a teen struggling with their sexual identity made homeless by their family because of their sexual preference? Or a mother struggling with mental health issues and can barely see beyond today? How do you restore hope to a family that has lost everything and the parents are ready to give up? These are only a few of the tough questions at 4 the Youth Center that we ask every single day. We have countless conversations with parents and their children who are in pain and in need of answers. The only way to fully answer these questions is to begin to bridge gaps. There is no way that the Youth Center can foundationally answer all these questions, but with the building of community and partnerships together we can! The art of hope restored is a big puzzle with many pieces. There are many pieces of the puzzle still missing and we are praying that the connections will come. Hope can be restored in community but unity must be developed first. In order for the art of hope to be restored the people will have to begin to see things from a whole new perspective. It will take a group of people like you and many others to be that ray of hope individuals are unable to see for themselves. Ask yourself, what can I do to restore this lost art of hope? What are the gifts and talents God has placed in me to pour out to what seems to be a lost generation or a lost city? 1 John 4:4 (NKJV) says, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Because He who is greater lives in us, we are gifted first with a great mandate to be the hope. During this time please pray for the Youth Center, that we will transform well into the Community Center that God has called to this city for such a time as this. “The children of the Community Center Also, please pray and ask God if He would have desire to soar like eagles, but it isn’t an you to be a part of this easy task. Thank you for the part that you process. Even if your part play in each one of their lives through your is to commit to praying, compassionate caring, for your generous there is no gift too small! donations, and for your faithful prayers!” PO Box 3041 • Harrisburg, PA 17105 • 717-257-4442 • bethesdamission.org The quarterly publication of the Bethesda Mission April 2016 • Vol. 2 Dreaming the Impossible Dream! by Serina Brown, Community Center Director D reaming is something that every man, woman and child should do. Understanding that possibilities are endless is what helps to maintain hope even when situations are dark. Imagining a world where there is no pain, suffering, death or crime is next to impossible. Death seems to surround the streets and the youth are challenged to see the one great hope which is Jesus. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future”. At the Youth Center we dream of this scripture coming alive in the heart of every youth, family, or community member that comes through our doors. are being given a great opportunity to allow more light to shine brighter in this city. Our students are now beginning to dream of what they can do within the new building. Some dream of such things as dancing, gymnastics, playing Gaga ball and of course, building a stronger and better basketball program. The possibilities are endless as far as they can see. As a staff, we are challenged to come up with great ideas that can not only help our youth and families, but also build a stronger community - looking to impact this city, one child, one family and one community at a time. God has called us to bring light into dark places and to speak and declare life over things that seem “Ask the Lord how you can help broken down or destitute. With What if we could train kids our very tongues God has given to dream the impossible dream the children of the Community us the power to declare change right now? They would be able to Center achieve their dreams!” in the life of a child, family, or see that things can happen today, community. I hope that you are getting excited with their hope does not have to be deferred. They could us about how many lives will be changed for Christ. I see that they not only are able to dream and hope pray that you would take this opportunity to lift up the but actually and actively become an agent of change city and our community in prayer as we consider what within their own city. We have been given a great change God wants to do through Bethesda Mission’s responsibility to teach youth of the next generation. Community Center. It is a task that must be completed with patience, love and joy. These are the ones who one day we will Pray that these kids will continue to be met by God entrust to run this city.
