It’s Time
For Action!
Recently I reapplied
for the Historically
Underutilized Business
(HUB) certification. I had
that certification years ago,
but let it expire because I
was not getting any business from the state. And as
a member of the Texas Publisher Association, we encouraged all of our members to get certified.
We immediately
discovered that the system was very flawed and
acted as a deterrent rather
than a help for getting
business from state agencies. While those agencies
spend Billions for all kinds
of services, the most that
many minority businesses
can expect is to be a subcontractor for a large
firm. That was the problem that certification was
trying to overcome.
One of the reasons
that most of our businesses turned in their certification was because the
state changed the rules
after they were approved
as a HUB. The biggest
change was the requirement that the business
turn all of their confidential information over to
the state, including, but
not limited to, bank account numbers, bank signature cards, Birth Certificates, and business balance sheets. That is information that most businesses would not disclose
to any outside sources, including governmental
agencies.
But the final straw
came when I was told that
my application was incomplete; because I did not
provide proof that I was
indeed African American.
And even though they had
my Birth Certificate and a
photo ID of my Driver’s
License, I needed to get a
notarized statement saying
that I was indeed who I
said I was.
But, nonetheless,
all of those who qualify
should make an application to be HUB certified.
Not being certified gives
the state agencies another
excuse for not doing business with you. And it
takes away the opportunity to appeal your case;
if you do not agree with
the process.

– Most Black households are familiar with
the common staple of
ready-made grits and
corn meal—especially
the Albers brand, produced by corporation,
Continental Mills, Inc.
In fact, Kimber Kimber
& Associates determined in a study of
“black consumer ad
spending” that African-
Americans will purchase over $25 million
worth of products from
Continental Mills under
the brand name of
Albers this year alone.
They also noted that
since Continental Mills
took over the Albers
brand from the Nestle
Corporation, they have
grossed over $160 million in total revenue

Motown legends in
long musical career
Gil Askey
Native Austinite
Gil Askey, a composer,
arranger and trumpeter
who spent much of the
1960s and ’70s as musical director for many of
Motown’s biggest acts,
including the Supremes,
the Temptations and the
Four
Tops,
died
Wednesday at his home
in Melbourne, Australia. He was 89.
Born March 9,
1925, in Austin, Askey
grew up in East Austin
and attended the original L.C. Anderson High
School, where he began
a lifelong association
with musicians in the
school’s Yellow Jackets
marching band. Though
he left town in 1942 at
age 17, enlisting in the
Army and living in New
York, Detroit and Los
Angeles before settling
in Australia, Askey returned to Austin frequently to visit family
and friends, said his
cousin, state Rep.
Dawnna Dukes. Gil
Askey was an American
jazz trumpeter, composer, producer, and
musical director. Askey
was considered to be
“one of the architects of
the legendary Motown
sound”. Berry Gordy
often called Askey “The
glue that kept everything together”.
Askey studied
music at the Boston
Conservatory of Music
and the Harnett School
of Music in New York.
He performed with
many famous musicians, some of the biggest jazz legends, including
Dizzy
Gillespie, Miles Davis,
Duke Ellington, and
Count Basie, and even
did a duet with Billie
Holiday. He worked as
a musical director for
many well-known acts,
including Diana Ross,

Civil Rights Summit held in Austin
The Civil Rights Summit held in Austin Texas,
April 8-10, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act
was spearheaded and signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The law, along with
the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the Fact Housing
Act in 1968, helped establish a legal foundation
for fulfilling the promise of equality among all
Americans.
The Civil Rights Summit did not only celebrate those pivotal laws, but will address the civil
rights issues we face today in America and around
the world.
Fulfilling a Promise, Realizing a Dream
Keynote address by Joseph A. Califano, Jr.
Special Assistant to President Lyndon Baines
Johnson and Andrew Young, Former Congressman and United Nations Ambassador addressed
an inside look at the consequential and complex
partnership between Lyndon Johnson and Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. on the issues of civil rights.
With the social movement of the civil rights, allowed the partnership of LBJ and MLK to convey
a message that they cared about the American
people and pushing through discrimination.

from Black consumers.
In looking at corporations benefiting
from the Black consumer and at the urging
of Black newspaper
publisher nationwide,
Kimber-Kimber & Associates contacted Continental Mills President
& CEO John M. Heilyin
an effort to give them
an opportunity to support the black community and Black consumers through direct media
buys with its 200 Black
newspapers it represents nationwide.
“Despite having
a huge income and
product support from
the Black consumer,
Continental Mills and
the Albers brand has
made an infamous and
historical decision to reject our proposals and
not to market to and
support their millions
of African-American
consumers
nationwide,” explained Mark
Kimber, CEO of Kimber
Kimber & Associates
and publisher of The
California Advocate
Newspaper, a family
owned and operated
Black newspaper since
1967.
“It is an amazing
fact that the Albers
brand is proving to be
one of the most discriminatory marketers in the
history of our nation’s
food product manufacturers, despite huge
Black consumer support,” said Kimber. “It
is almost unimaginable
that the CEO of Continental Mills, who produces and markets the
Albers brand, to state to
Black newspapers that
his company does not
have any intention to
even consider to advertise or purchase seasonal branding advertisement, such as Black
history Month ads, directed to the Black consumer through Black
newspapers.”

both with and without The Supremes, the
Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder,
The Jackson 5, Gladys
Knight, Keni Burke and
Linda Clifford.
Askey played as
a jazz trumpeter for almost 25 years before arriving at Motown
records to work as a
musical director, producer, songwriter and
musical arranger for
such artists as Gladys
Knight, The Temptations, The Supremes,
Martha Reeves and The
Vandellas,
Marvin
Gaye and Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and
The Funk Brothers.
Askey was also part of
Motown’s Artists Development crew that included Maxine Powell,
Maurice King, Cholly
Atkins and Harvey
Fuqua.
Diana Ross
When Diana
Ross became a solo performer, she hired Askey
to be her Musical Director. He worked with her
for 10 years and wrote
Gil Askey
the score for her very
first motion picture
Lady Sings the Blues
that earned him an
Academy
Awards
nomination in 1972.
Askey later worked
with Curtis Mayfield,
writing and arranging
for his Curtom Record
Company.
He was a good
entertainer as well.
When things got out
hand during a show in
Antwerp, Belgium, that
starred the Four Tops,
Askey leaped on the
stage and played trumpet amazingly until the
audience calmed down.
Askey was the arranger
and conductor for The
Supremes during their
successful runs at the
Copa night club in New
York. He pretty much
put the whole show together.
After moving to
Australia in 1980, Askey
returned to performing
in 1993 and continued
to perform right up to
his death in Melbourne
on 9 April 2014. In
Melbourne,
Askey
taught and mentored
young aspiring musicians. He also toured
and played many regular gigs and jazz spots
around the country right
up until his death.
port while not having to
support Black media
institutions, Kimber
Kimber &Associates
and its over 200 Black
newspapers it represents will be urging
Black consumers to boycott the Albers brand for
the remainder of the
2014 year through a
large blatant print ad
describing the discriminatory practices, along
with other brand alternatives.
“We as the Black
press seek to, as all
other consumer groups,
be incorporated in the
very marketing structure of brands such as
Albers, and never again
be discounted from any
product manufacturer
who realizes the support of our black consumer dollar while not
spending legitimate advertising dollars to support our institutions,”
said Kimber. “That is
the only way we Black
newspapers will, like
all other ethnic consumer groups and media outlets, keep our
cultural media vibrant
and sustainable.
Ashley Furniture is also being
singled out as a company that ignores African American newspa-
pers while spending
millions of dollars in
white owned newspapers advertising annually. “In regards to
Ashley Furniture it is
not a matter of newspaper advertising versus
internet or broadcast
advertising it is clearly
just the fact that they
choose not to utilize
Black owned newspapers within the millions
of newspaper advertising dollars they continue to provide to
white and Hispanic
newspapers annually.
While our community
continues to share our
consumer dollars with
Ashley Furniture they
arrogantly ignore our
newspapers while giving newspaper ad dollars to all other ethnic
groups.”,
stated
Kimber.
This is the first series of the “Our Fair
Share” Black newspaper campaigns designed
to gain advertising support for Black-owned
and operated newspa-
pers nationwide. It is
estimated by Adage
Magazine and Ketchum
Agency that major corporations will spend
over $390 billion in
newspaper advertising
in the next fiscal year.
Kimber Kimber & Associates noted that African-American newspapers currently receive
less than 0.00001 percent of these ad dollar
expenditures annually.
“In speaking
regularly with over 80
black newspaper publishers around the country, it is clear that this is
not personal to Albers
brand or Ashley Furniture,” said Kimber, “but
it is an overall idea of
fair trade with our community. Even national
brands such as Adidas
and Cadillac have fallen
short of their overall
support of our traditional cultural media
despite the fact that the
Black consumer has
made these brands into
the success they enjoy
today”

school and incoming 9th
grade students. It will be held
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
CRHS, 2801 Gattis School
Road, Round Rock. Onsite
check-in begins the day of
the conference at 8:30 a.m.
Students must register online
at http://goo.gl/TlV0H1 (The
letter after the “T” is a lower
case “L”). Lunch is included.
There is also a community service activity. Participants are encouraged to
bring two or more nonperishable food items for the Round
Rock Area Serving Center.
The donations, as well as
their participation in the
event, will allow them to be
entered in drawings for
prizes.
Community partners will
include universities, educational programming areas,
STEM organizations, and
corporations. They will provide demonstrations, hands
on activities, and team design challenges. “The district is excited about the
conference as it is an opportunity to expose students to STEM and extends
learning beyond the classroom for those already in one
of our STEM academies,”
said Richard Kincaid, Director of Career and Technical
Education.
RRISD, the RRISD Partners in Education Foundation

at risk of being held back.
Many students who don’t
have room for required
courses in their schedules
will take classes like health
and speech over the summer
to fulfill the need for those
credits.
Many students currently
in high school will look into
finding a job over the summer. Summer jobs are a
great way for high school students to earn money and
learn responsibility. A job can
be time consuming, which is
a major concern for teens that
might consider working over
the summer break. Nobody
wants to spend all of his or
her time off working.
Summer is a great time
to relax, try new things, and
learn from various experiences. A summer break
should never be spent doing absolutely nothing; it is
probably the best time of
year to be productive.

On Sunday April 13th,
the city of Cedar Park held
its annual Spring EggStravaganza at Milburn Park.
The event was free to the
public and included plenty of
festive activities for the kids.
As part of the Vista Ridge
National Honor Society, I
spent hours stuffing the eggs
early in the week. We stuffed
over 10,000 eggs and still
had thousands of pieces of
candy left over.
The event itself was
our spring chapter service
project and we were put in
charge of controlling the
Easter egg hunt. We had to
spread out all of the thousands of eggs over an area
about the size of a football
field. Kids began to gather
around the yellow caution
tape and at 2:05 pm the horn
sounded. Hundreds of kids
wildly ran in all directions
and the scene appeared to
be chaotic, yet undeniably
enjoyable. Within ten minutes there was not a single
remnant of candy on the
ground. It definitely felt like
everyone was in the spring
spirit and ready for the Easter holiday.
Work
Genesis Stiggers
Elgin Elementary
Everyone that has determination, works. Without
work no one will have a purpose in life. Everyone would
be lazy and everything
would be boring. If work
didn’t exist nobody would be
proud or happy because
everything would come to
you. You might think that it
would be a good life but think
about it, you work, rich
people work, everybody that
is happy works. So if there
was no work everyone
would be bored and have
no meaning.
Some people think
they have lost everything or
have nothing to work or live
for but that’s not true, if you
have a dream you deserve
to live it. If you have a goal
you deserve to accomplish
it. Failure is a big part of it
but don’t be scared, it isn’t
work if you didn’t fall first.
So there is something everyone should do. It’s name, is
work.
