cience tells us that the ability to adapt to
change is essential for survival, even as
we humans resist change at every turn. From
its earliest days, The Peregrine Fund has deliberately managed to stay small, nimble, and
flexible. I credit that adaptability for our success—and 2014 promises a lot more of both.
Among the most heart-breaking transitions in the past year was the loss of two
good friends and board members. Frank Bond, a Peregrine Fund founder and our
legal counsel, provided invaluable advice and unwavering support for more than 40
years. We also lost Velma Morrison, a Boise philanthropist who enabled us to open
the visitor center that bears her name. Their long and faithful commitment to raptor
conservation will be greatly missed.
The most sweeping transition is already underway in our recovery program for the
Aplomado Falcon, an endangered species that occupied the American Southwest
until the 1950s. For a quarter century, we worked to restore this beautiful raptor
through captive breeding and releases to the wild. As a result, a small but self-sustaining population is now thriving along the Gulf Coast of

As I look ahead, I see our work through a lens that increasingly encompasses not just specific species but landscapes
—Charles Darwin and ecosystems. Twenty-five years ago, we began taking a
big-picture approach in Madagascar, where we have
helped protect large swaths of habitat for birds of prey and all the plants and animals they need to survive, including the people who coexist with them. Our newest
project, which will examine the effects of climate change in the Arctic and its effects
on the Gyrfalcon, adopts a similar landscape approach to solving exceedingly complex challenges.
We adapt to new challenges with innovative problem-solving. We are human, so
the transition is not easy, but I am confident that we are facing the future head-on,
thanks to donors and supporters who inspire us daily with their loyalty, passion,
and generosity.

In 2013, the Arizona-Utah flock
produced four chicks in the
wild—a record number—in and
near the Grand Canyon. Three of
the chicks fledged and grew
under the watchful care of their
parents. One chick went missing
along with one of its parents; neither has been found or
recovered.
This breeding activity in the wild is a promising sign
that California Condors can survive on their own, but
lead poisoning remains a significant hurdle. Our
research shows that half of all condors that die are
known to have died from exposure to lead. We monitor
the flock closely to find and treat condors with lead poisoning and work closely with state authorities to
encourage the voluntary use of non-lead ammunition
by hunters to reduce condors’ exposure to lead.
Now, 10 years later, our survey data shows that critically
endangered Long-billed Vultures in Pakistan and India
may be starting to recover, providing hope that the
long effort to reverse their slide to extinction may be
producing results. Vultures play a vital role in South
Asia, making their recovery important for the health
and culture of this region.

Our innovative “assisted dispersal” project in Dominican Republic, which moves chicks from
nests where survival is unlikely
to more protected areas, proved
in 2013 to be an effective way to
enlarge a species’ breeding
range and reduce the risk of extinction. Two adults that
had been relocated as chicks have now formed a pair
and produced a chick, the first hatched outside the
small, poorly protected national park where the remaining birds live.
Aplomado Falcon
2013 was a transitional year for
this recovery project, which
began in 1986. The last chicks
produced by our breeding facility were released to the wild
along the Gulf Coast in South
Texas, where a self-sustaining
population exists. This brings us another step closer to
the end of this project whose final chapter will be the
falcon’s removal from the U.S. Endangered Species List.
We are monitoring the Texas population while shifting
emphasis to habitat improvements to ensure longterm success. Working with state and federal partners,
we are focused on efforts to remove brush that has
encroached on the once-wide-open landscape needed
by Aplomado Falcons and other grassland species.
Asian vultures
Our research has indicated a positive trend—it appears that the
ban on veterinary diclofenac in
South Asia is having a positive
effect on vulture populations,
which were decimated when the
drug was introduced in the
1990s. In 2003, The Peregrine Fund discovered the
cause of the vulture die-off and the use of diclofenac to
treat ailing cattle and livestock was subsequently
banned in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
Public education is a key component of this recovery
project and we are taking steps to reduce human persecution of this critically endangered species.

Despite challenges from parasites and predators, 2013 was a
good year for the rare Orangebreasted Falcon, a species we
are breeding in captivity and
releasing to the wild in Central
America. Two captive-bred
males released in 2010 mated with wild females and
fledged five chicks, which were among a record high
number of fledglings in our survey area in Belize and
Guatemala.
In 2007, we began introducing a small number of captive-bred falcons to enhance genetic diversity and help
mitigate population declines. Each year, we collect valuable information that will provide answers to complex
challenges of habitat, survival, and shooting.

African Vulture Telemetry Study
Scientific research: the foundation
of all our conservation strategies.
Wind energy
Genetics
A research project on behalf of a wind energy development in Idaho caused us to begin in 2012 to assess
what role we might play in measuring and mitigating
the impact of wind farms on bird of prey populations.
We also are assessing the effects of wind turbines on
the breeding population of Golden Eagles near Altamont Pass, California.
Using feathers and other samples collected by
researchers in the field, the genetics of several species,
including vultures, falcons, and owls, were studied to
determine relationships and evolutionary histories. We
use this molecular genetic data to inform our strategies
to conserve the world’s raptor biodiversity.

Scientific publications
Oil-spill monitoring
After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf
of Mexico, The Peregrine Fund partnered with Earthspan to determine exposure rates in Peregrine Falcons
migrating over and along the Gulf. We capture falcons
along the Texas coast in the spring and fall and collect
blood samples to be analyzed and measured for preand post-spill concentrations of a group of petroleum
residues known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAH).

Almost 20 scientific publications by Peregrine Fund
researchers in 2013 covered topics ranging from Yellowbilled Kite ecology in Madagascar to Aplomado Falcon
restoration in the United States.
We co-authored a paper published in 2014 based on
several years of study of vultures in Africa. Using data
collected from telemetry devices attached to three
species of vultures in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem,
results dispelled a previous assumption that vultures
followed large, concentrated migrations of animals
such as wildebeest, when in fact they seek food where
there is low rainfall and high prey mortality. The vultures travel over vast distances, highlighting the need
to extend protection beyond the boundaries of
national parks and reserves.

Connecting professional and citizen scientists
addresses problems before they become crises.
Tundra Conservation Network
Neotropical Raptor Network
Our newest professional network brings together leading scientists representing the eight nations of the Arctic. The purpose is to understand the complexities of
the arctic landscape and formulate conservation strategies for this fragile ecosystem, from soil microbes to top
predators like the Gyrfalcon. We hosted the network’s
inaugural meeting in February 2014.
This network links scientists, conservationists, and naturalists working on issues related to birds of prey in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. In 2013,
we co-hosted the first Worldwide Raptor Conference in
Argentina with the Raptor Research Foundation. We
also produced and distributed an e-newsletter to 383
subscribers and maintained the network’s website.
American Kestrel Partnership
Library and Global Raptor Information
Network
Professional researchers and citizen scientists are
teamed up to better understand why populations of
the American Kestrel are in decline in many areas, particularly along the East Coast of the United States. The
kestrel is not yet endangered, raising the possibility
that steps could be taken before the situation worsens.
Citizen scientists observe nest boxes and enter data on
our website; researchers analyze the data to establish
trends and arrive at solutions.

Our ever-growing library is a vital resource to biologists
and researchers all over the world. With nearly 25,000
titles in our catalogue, we were able in 2013 to supply
free copies of 860 articles from the library and reprint
collections in response to more than 300 requests,
some of them from professionals and students who
work in poor, undeveloped, or isolated regions. Biologists also communicate and keep up-to-date on new
information through our online resource, the Global
Raptor Information Network.

Archives of Falconry
Our goal is to make a lasting contribution to conservation and science by training a raptor biologist in every
nation in the world. We train and support promising
individuals in their native countries who are as passionate and committed as we are in making raptor conservation their life’s work. In 2013, The Peregrine Fund provided financial and logistical support to 22 students;
we are very proud of our 2013 graduates from Peru and
Madagascar who completed doctorate and master’s
degrees.
Nearly 30,000 visitors experienced our conservation
message in 2013 at the visitor center, the public face of
The Peregrine Fund. The visitor center hosts several special events throughout the year, the biggest being the
outdoor flight demonstrations in the fall when enthusiastic crowds watch our education birds fly and soar.
Educators, using traditional falconry techniques, highlight each bird’s unique characteristics and skills. More
than 6,800 students toured the visitor center or took
part in presentations at their schools.
An astounding collection of books, artwork, and artifacts makes this archive unlike any other in the world.
Twice-a-day tours allow visitors to learn about the
ancient sport of falconry and the role that falconers
play in raptor conservation. In the spring, the annual
rendezvous attracted 125 falconers for a day to celebrate their sport, honor those who passed away, and
enjoy a special exhibit of drawings and paintings by
John Perry Baumlin.
