NovoRapid ® Insulin aspart
NovoRapid ® Penfill® 3 ml. NovoRapid ® FlexPen® 3 ml. All
presentations contain insulin aspart 100 units/ml. Indication:
Treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults and adolescents and
children aged 2 to 17 years. Dosage and administration:
Individual by subcutaneous injection usually between 0.5 and
1.0 U/kg/day. It should normally be used in combination with
intermediate or long-acting insulin given at least once a day.
NovoRapid ® has a faster onset and a shorter duration of action
than soluble human insulin and should generally be given
immediately before a meal. When necessary NovoRapid ® can be
given soon after a meal. Blood glucose monitoring and dose
adjustments are recommended to achieve optimal glycaemic
control. In elderly patients and patients with renal or hepatic
impairment, glucose monitoring should be intensified and insulin
aspart dosage adjusted on an individual basis. No studies in
children under the age of 2 years; should only be used in this age
group under careful medical supervision. Can be used in children
in preference to soluble insulin when a fast onset of action might
be beneficial. Transfer from other insulin products may require
adjustment of the NovoRapid ® or basal dose. May also be used
in a suitable pump system for continuous subcutaneous insulin
infusion. If necessary, may be administered intravenously by a
healthcare professional. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to
active substance or excipients. Special warnings and special
precautions: Travelling between different time zones may
change the time of when to take the insulin if meals are at
different times. Inadequate dosing or discontinuation of
treatment may lead to hyperglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis,
which is potentially lethal. Omission of a meal, unplanned
strenuous physical exercise or too high a dose in relation to
insulin requirements may lead to hypoglycaemia. Patients whose
blood glucose control is greatly improved may experience a
change in their usual warning symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
Usual warning symptoms may disappear in patients with
longstanding diabetes. If hypoglycaemia occurs, it may occur
earlier after an injection compared with soluble human insulin.
The fast onset of action should be considered in patients where
a delayed absorption of food might be expected. Changes in
early warning symptoms of hypoglycaemia may occur on transfer
between different types of insulin products. Transferring to
another type or brand of insulin should be done under strict
medical supervision. Patients transferred to NovoRapid ® from
another type of insulin may require an increased number of daily
injections or a change in dosage. Injection site reactions, usually
transitory, may occur; rotation of injection sites within an area
may help reduce or prevent these reactions. Rarely, injection site
reactions may require discontinuation of NovoRapid ®.
Hypoglycaemia may constitute a risk when driving or operating
machinery. NovoRapid ® must not be mixed with other medicinal
products except for NPH (Neutral Protamine Hagedorn) insulin
and some infusion fluids. Consult Summary of Product
Characteristics for details. Pregnancy and lactation: NovoRapid®
can be used in pregnancy. No restrictions on use during breastfeeding. Undesirable effects: Hypoglycaemia is the most
frequently occurring side effect. Very common (≥1/10); common
(≥1/100 to <1/10); uncommon (≥1/1,000 to <1/100); rare
(≥1/10,000 to <1/1,000); very rare (<1/10,000), not known
(cannot be estimated from the available data). Uncommon:
Refraction disorders (usually transitory in nature), worsening of
diabetic retinopathy, lipodystrophy, local hypersensitivity
reactions; oedema upon initiation of insulin therapy, urticaria,
rash and eruptions, Rare: Peripheral neuropathy – acute painful
neuropathy; Very rare: Anaphylatic reactions. The Summary of

Welcome Message from the Conference President
Dear Friends,
The city of Buenos Aires has much to celebrate in October 2010. Not only will it receive the
participants of the 36th ISPAD Annual Meeting, but it will be the first ISPAD Meeting to be
held in Latin America. In 2010 Argentina is celebrating its 200th anniversary as an independent state, and the whole country will be enjoying the lovely southern hemisphere’s spring
season. Argentina and Latin America are very proud that Buenos Aires has been chosen as
the venue for this Meeting.
Prestigious speakers are coming from all over the world, from both emerging and first
world countries, creating an atmosphere of understanding. Two hemispheres will be
working together and sharing their knowledge and experiences helping us to comprehend
different realities. It is our desire that not only information, but also cultures will interact to
bring better understanding among us.
We hope all nations to be present, and we also hope that you can find a relaxed atmosphere
that Buenos Aires and the presence of Latin American affection can bring you.
The Scientific Programme will provide great opportunities to learn and discuss new information concerning diagnostic and therapeutic developments as well as cutting edge data
in several fields of diabetes research and care: new and exciting advances in the fields of
prevention and management of diabetes and all its interrelated factors.

Another fundamental aspect that makes this meeting unique is that it will have simultaneous English - Spanish translation thanks to the kindness of the whole Assembly, a kindness
all the Spanish speaking community really appreciates as it allows them to share opinions more smoothly. As this will be a multidisciplinary meeting for pediatricians, nurses,
nutritionists, psychologists and other members of the health group, they will all have the
opportunity of attending general and special sessions.
Optimal diabetes care requires an integral approach and an active collaboration between
all health professionals. This partnership will enable us to meet our common goal: to enhance the lives of children and adolescents with diabetes.

Welcome Message from the ISPAD President
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to our 36th Meeting of the International Society for
Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes which will take place in the city of Buenos Aires. This is
the first time an ISPAD meeting is held in Latin America.
Almost 6% of the adult population - or more than 18 million people - suffer from diabetes in
Latin America. Despite these alarming adult numbers it is important to put the spotlight on
the most vulnerable population: the children which are affected with all forms of diabetes
in increasing numbers as well. European data published in 2009 indicate if present trends
continue, doubling of new cases of type 1 diabetes in children younger than 5 years is
predicted between 2005 and 2020, and prevalent cases younger than 15 years will rise by
70%. Thus, adequate health care resources to meet these children’s needs should be made
available around the world.
“Progress in Pediatric Diabetes: from Vision to Reality” is the theme of this years conference.
The evidence is growing that we are making significant advances in achieving better and
better outcomes. The treatment options for young people with diabetes are better than
they have ever been and visions of even superior approaches are at our fingertips. However,
the reality is that too many children with diabetes have insufficient access to adequate
care or adopt behaviors which, in the long term, will reduce their ability to lead healthy and
productive lives.

Historically, Buenos Aires has been Argentina‘s main venue for liberal and free-trade ideas.
Without doubt the “fair winds” giving the name to this town will be an ideal surrounding
for our discussions on how to close the gap between our visions of a bright future for children
with diabetes and the sometimes harsh realities of modern day health care.
We would like to highlight the fact that although all the speakers will present in English,
there will be English/Spanish, simultaneous translation, which will enable the discussion
and conclusions in both languages. It is a great opportunity for all Latin Americans to put
forward their ideas to the international ISPAD family.
I look forward to meeting you in Buenos Aires and experiencing a most exciting and inspiring
36th Annual ISPAD Meeting in the Argentinean tradition of hospitality, excellent food and
drink, tango music and other cultural delights.

The Society
ISPAD is a professional organization whose aims are to promote clinical and basic science, education and advocacy in
childhood and adolescent diabetes. The strength of ISPAD lies
in the scientific and clinical expertise in childhood and adolescent diabetes of its members. ISPAD is the only international society focusing specifically on all types of childhood
diabetes.
ISPAD Best Oral / Poster Prize
The ISPAD Best Oral Prize and also the ISPAD Best Poster Prize
will be given to any individual (ISPAD Member and NonMember) submitting an abstract to the 36th Annual Meeting
International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes.
The papers will be judged and ranked by the Reviewing Committee. The best poster and oral presentation will be chosen
at the meeting by the Prize Committee under the auspices of
the ISPAD Steering Committee.

paper published in a peer reviewed journal within two years

The Certificate of Attendance serves as proof of attendance and

EACCME Statement
ISPAD 2010 is accredited by the European Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The
EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical
Specialists, www.uems.net. ISPAD is designated for a maximum of 18 hours of European external CME credits. Each
medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit
that he/she actually spent in educational activity. EACCME
credits are recognized by the American Medical Association
towards the Physician’s Records Award (PRA). To convert
EACCME credit to AMA PRA category 1 credits, contact the
AMA.
Conference Bag
The conference bag, containing the conference material, can
be obtained in the registration area at the conference venue.
Currency
The national currency in Argentina is Argentine peso (ARS, $)
but all payments connected with the ISPAD 2010 conference
will be in Euro (€). Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard/Diners/
Amex) are accepted as well.

Filming and Taking Pictures
Out of respect for author’s and speaker’s copyrights, it is
forbidden to take pictures and/or to film during any official
conference sessions. In case of negligence, the organizers
reserve the right to exclude the participant from the
conference.
Insurance and Liability
The conference organizer, the International Society for
Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes and the ISPAD Conference
Secretariat cannot accept liability for personal injury, loss of
or damage to belongings of conference participants, either
during or as a result of the conference. Please check the validity
of your own insurance.

Internet stations will be available in the exhibition area.
ISPAD Service Point
The Society will have a service point in the exhibition area
where members can ask questions, pay their fees, etc. NonMembers are also invited to learn more about ISPAD.
As the service point for ISPAD members will have opening
hours, you can also contact a staff at the registration counter
for more information.
Please come to the ISPAD Service Point to find out more
about DIAMAX: mini which has been developed for all diabetes
specialists that do not use an electronic health record yet and
want to start electronic documentation on a limited scale!
Language
The official conference language is English. Simultaneous
translation will be provided from English to Spanish for the
Plenary Sessions.

Lost/ Forgotten Name Badge
In case you forget to bring your name badge/voucher letter
to the conference, a credit card guarantee for the total
amount of the registration fee will be required to get a
replacement badge. In addition, a non-refundable handling
fee of € 30 will be charged. Your old name badge will be
de-activated and become invalid. To release the credit card
guarantee and avoid double payment, the complete and
undamaged original letter has to be sent to the conference
secretariat within four weeks after the conference. If a
delegate loses or misplaces his name badge, a handling fee
of € 30 will be charged for a new name badge. Your old name
badge will be de-activated and become invalid. Kindly note
that vouchers for the Social Program are not substitutable.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones must be set to silent mode in all session
rooms at all times.
Name Badge
A badge is required for admittance to all official conference
sessions and events. Each participant is asked to present the
badge in order to gain access to the conference. The name
badge must be worn and clearly displayed at all times.
Poster Area / Poster Sessions
The poster area will be located in room Retiro on the first floor.
The posters will be present during the entire conference. Poster
Sessions with a designated chairman will take place at the
times indicated in the program. All poster presenters are asked
to post their posters well before this time and to be present
during the times of presentation. Material and the exact
location of where to attach the posters to the poster walls will be
provided.
Program Changes
The organizers cannot assume liability for any changes in the
program due to external or unforeseen circumstances. Please
check the website for regular updates. The organizers reserve the
right to cancel, postpone, relocate or change any of the sessions.
Registration
Please bring this confirmation to the conference venue and
go directly to the Self Printing Stations. The barcode on this
document will allow you to print your conference name
badge. You can then pick up your conference material in the
registration Area.

It is forbidden to smoke in any part of the conference venue.
Speakers Center
Invited speakers, chairmen and oral abstract presenters must
report to the Speakers’ Center, located on the second floor,
room Gómez Losada (E), at least four hours prior to their
presentation in order to check and deposit their presentation.
Please provide the data on a USB Memory Stick or a CD-ROM.
Please note that it is not allowed to run the presentation
from your personal laptop in the session room. Video support
is at the sole responsibility of the speaker. The opening hours
of the speakers’ center are the same as registration opening
hours.

will be shared. Finally, the role of diabetes education in achieving treatment adherence in children
with diabetes is going to be evaluated.

use the opportunity to take tango lessons and enjoy the
atmosphere of Opera Pampa. After the show, you will taste
famous Argentinean beef grilled in a typical Gaucho style.

The Society‘s Evening will be an elegant get-together and social
highlight of ISPAD 2010. Held in one of the nobles ventures, a
building that represents a period of Argentinean history and
culture and the style of the time. The evening will start with a
reception and afterwards the ISPAD prizes will be awarded to
the nominees. It will be an evening full of entertainment, food
and music, and an excellent opportunity for everybody to meet
and get to know other conference participants.
