The Smith Family
I am writing this to demonstrate our family’s
deepest appreciation for the Ronald McDonald
House of San Antonio. In 2012 my husband and
I began the toughest years we have ever had
to face. High School sweethearts we decided to
wait until we were stable in life before starting a
family. Finally, that time occurred; we both had
good jobs, a nice home and money in the bank.
Great, we will finally start the family, we have
always dreamed about; a little late in life, but no big deal I'm healthy we will be fine.
At the beginning of my pregnancy my husband lost his job so we ultimately had to
sell our house to do what was best for our impending family. This event made an
already emotional pregnant lady super emotional. I cried day and night, wondering how and why this would happen to us not knowing this wasn't even the most
devastating news of the year. At 28 weeks pregnant, I was doing an ultrasound on
myself (I am a high risk pregnancy sonographer) and realized that my baby’s head
was abnormal in appearance. This led to 14 weeks of terror. Delivery day was horrible as my baby's abnormal head could not make it through my birth canal resulting
in an emergency C-section. I lost a lot of blood, it took 2 1/2 hours to stabilize
me while my husband sat with our new baby wondering if this was going to be the
worst day of his life. Ultimately, I am a fighter and I managed to pull through. Our
son needed brain surgery at three months of age and despite being in the medical field, we were reluctant to have the surgery in our hometown. After extensive
research we were able to locate a Neurosurgeon in San Antonio, Texas who would
be able to perform the necessary procedure. The Neurosurgeon's office referred
us to the Ronald McDonald House, which was an amazing blessing for our family.
The Ronald McDonald House welcomed us for the duration of our stay. When we
arrived, we were still in shock over the entire situation due to the travel, fear, and
uncertainty surrounding this devastating event. The holiday season was fast approaching, the surgery was looming, and at that moment we realized we were now
at the worst time in our life. However, something amazing happened. We felt better almost immediately following our arrival to the house. Being surrounded by lov-
ing, caring people that understand what it is you are going through helps you tremendously during such a tumultuous time in one’s life. We were able to give full attention
and care to our son while the support of the house took care of us and our needs.
Although Ronald McDonald House eliminated the financial burden of a hotel room, it pales in comparison to the emotional support we received throughout our numerous stays. We cried a lot at The Ronald McDonald House, but

Additionally, the support you receive from the other parents at the house is incredible, it makes you feel not so alone. We who stay at the Ronald McDonald House
can honestly feel the other parent’s pain or joy because we become so close. No
matter what your particular situation may be we are in a similar state of affairs.
Looking back, I can't imagine going through this while living out of a hotel room.
My husband and I cannot begin to thank the Ronald McDonald House enough for everything they did for our family and continue to do every day for other families with
stories even more devastating than ours. There is no doubt in our mind that the
staff, volunteers, comfort and services from the Ronald McDonald House lessened
the strain of our son’s surgery on our family. The heart and love they showed us will
never be forgotten. Every time we step foot in the Ronald McDonald House, we feel
better. The Ronald McDonald House has touched our heart forever. We are so grateful
to all of the people who comforted us. The Ronald McDonald House may be the house
love built, but for us is truly a home away from home.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio (RMHCSA) recently completed work on its 2014 – 2019 Strategic Plan. This plan is
the culmination of our planning process which began in 2012. Through this plan, we have reaffirmed our mission, vision, and values, and established key strategies and initiatives for the next five years.
This Strategic Plan serves as a compass for our work in providing a home-away-from-home for seriously ill and injured children and their families. With the Strategic Plan as our roadmap we will put our energy into constructing the facilities necessary to meet the expanding needs of children and families in San Antonio
and South Texas, and will enable families to put their energy into the most important task – healing and mutual support.
Since the RMHCSA was first founded in 1980, we have built three Ronald McDonald Houses in San Antonio and two family rooms in hospitals in Laredo. We are
knee-deep in plans for reconstruction and expansion of our house in the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (CHOSA). And soon we will begin the detailed plans
for construction of House #4 in the San Antonio Medical Center.
We are making these plans because our San Antonio houses have been at or nearing capacity for two years. And, with the pediatric population growth in San
Antonio and thirty surrounding counties, coupled with the pediatric service expansions at CHOSA, Methodist Hospital, and University Hospital of (and the
growing network of pediatric services, outpatient facilities and clinics throughout the community), the demand for San Antonio-based Ronald McDonald
Houses’ unique services is increasing dramatically.
Imagine, if you will, for just a moment, that you and your spouse are both employed, but you are only one accident or serious illness away from catastrophe, and
that accident or illness strikes your child. Suddenly you are uprooted from your home to San Antonio and your child is battling for survival in a hospital, and you
cannot afford to commute, or pay for a hotel, food, or other daily needs because you’ve had to leave your job to be with your child. You, your spouse, and other
children are living out of your car in a hospital parking lot.
It doesn’t have to be this way – our Ronald McDonald Houses provide a home away from home for families with seriously ill children, but only if we have community support to build, supply, and maintain these houses, and volunteers to help our families.
The San Antonio community (public and private contributors, corporations, foundations, and many, many individuals) has been an incredibly generous supporter
of our houses for 30 years. Laredo has also been very generous in supporting our San Antonio houses and Laredo family rooms. We are counting on all of you for
more help in accomplishing our goals and initiatives. This is important work that affects all of the children and families that we serve now, and will serve in the
future. With your continuing help, we will reach all of our goals.
Next year, please help us celebrate our 30th anniversary (more information on that later). Thank you for traveling with us on this exciting journey – we have much
more to come.
A Sad Farewell

Mildred "Mille" Lerner
The San Antonio Ronald McDonald Houses are more than just a place to work for our staff, we become like family. Being such a small staff facilitates a
great opportunity for us to bond with each other and form long lasting relationships. Sadly, this year we lost 2 of our family members. Mildred Lerner
and Reba Cooper, both Resident Managers, passed away. Mildred, Millie to her friends and family, had been a member of our Ronald McDonald House
family for a total of 21 years. She started with us at our Lewis St. House in 1993 and then retired to help raise her beloved grandchildren. As the children
grew, she found herself in a position to rejoin our family. We could not have been happier! She was always upbeat and had a smile on her face and kind
words for our patients and their families even when her own health declined. She would start work early and stay late to accommodate our guest families
or just to visit with them. We will forever remember her positive attitude and warm smile.
Reba Cooper came to us later in life. She had retired from a 30 year career with Baylor University when she and her husband, A.J., moved from Waco,
TX to San Antonio. In 2006 Reba took on the position of Resident Manager at our House on Lewis St. She was an instant hit with the families. Always
gracious and sweet, she had a way of making all who met her feel instantly comfortable and cared for. She stayed with us for 2 years until her husband's
health started to fail and he requested that they return to Waco for his final months.

Both of these warm, beautiful, kind hearted women made a permanent imprint on our hearts and have inspired us to continue our mission with love and
compassion, just the way they did. Thank you Millie and Reba. We love you and you are missed.

Let the Construction Begin! CAPITAL CAMPAIGN IS IN FULL SWING!

Have you heard? We are renovating and expanding our home inside Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Plans are underway and construction is ongoing for our
new 10,700 square foot home complete with 16 bedrooms, dining area, kitchen, offices, reception areas, reading room, pantry, play area and laundry facilities.
Operations temporarily ceased in 2012 due to expansion, but we will soon be up and running full speed ahead on the 4th floor of the hospital. Our expanded
home will allow families to remain on the premises-minutes away from their ill child.
The San Antonio pediatric community is growing and services are at an all-time high; we are fortunate that we can offer our services and assist families and
hospital personnel in a way that benefits all.
Our commitment to meet the demands of the growing pediatric community doesn’t stop at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. A new 4th Ronald McDonald House will be built in the very near
future. This new home will be located just doors from our current home on Sid Katz in the Medical Center. It will consist of twenty-one bedrooms including a 5 suite transplant wing, meditation
room, outdoor play areas, kitchen, dining rooms and everything you would find inside your home
only bigger-25,000 square feet to be exact.
We have been operating at full capacity most nights and unfortunately we are forced to turn families away. Due to the fact that we can no longer assist these additional families in crisis, it has been determined that there is an urgent need for a new 4th home.
A new home will ensure that a child and family traveling to San Antonio will be able to find a place
to stay and receive the life-saving medical treatment required.
As you can see, funding is extremely important as we continue our efforts to further our mission
of providing safe, temporary living accommodations for critically ill and injured children and their

We can and will accomplish our goals, and with your help and financial commitment, we will build our homes and ensure that no child is turned away or unable to
receive life-saving treatment.

Children are our future and although we like to believe that the future is long and bright, such is not always the case. Unfortunately, there are many seriously ill and injured children whose hope for the future is measured one day at a time. These children
and their families look to the Ronald McDonald House Charities to provide shelter, food, encouragement and hope. This year
alone over 1,500 families will find a haven in one of our Ronald McDonald Houses or Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms.
Care such as this does not happen by accident or without a price. Our homes are supported entirely by private donations and
your generosity. The need for the special care Ronald McDonald Houses provide has grown and continues to grow. As you have
read, we are committed to meet the needs of these special families. We are actively raising funds to expand our Ronald McDonald House #3 inside Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and build our 4th home in San Antonio in the very near future. We want
to ensure that when a family comes to San Antonio with a critically ill or injured child and needs a caring place to lay their heads,
our door is open.
The holidays, the anticipation of a new year and spending time with family and friends can all be overwhelming. Having a child
diagnosed with a critical illness or injury, being sent to a strange city far from your support system and not knowing where to
turn can be devastating. Please remember Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio with your monetary gifts, in-kind
contributions and donation of your time and talents. There may be no greater cause than giving hope to the families who are
cared for by the Ronald McDonald Houses of San Antonio and Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms in Laredo.

McDonald is on board too.
Last summer we had 60 plus fabulous chairs donated
and designed by artists from all over San Antonio. A
few who shared their creative talents last year and
are on board again include Medlars Jewelry, Valero,
entertainer Shavonne Conroy, Union Pacific Railroad,
Interior Designers Adrian Galvan, Nichelle Hosley
and Kim Kramer, Adeina Anderson of Crafting with
Adeina, Whimsy Art Studio’s Crystal Bannin, Flip
Flop Shops at North Star Mall, Karen Gordon, Jen
Negrete, Northside Performing Arts Center and Connie Ramos.
Over 325 guests enjoyed C-Rock Band and special
performances by Ken Slavin, Shavonne Conroy,
