Titans football team loaded with returning talent in 2015
By Doug Dornath
South Central Calhoun has
much to look forward to this
fall on the football field as the
season kicked off Friday, Aug.
28, in Lake City against Greene
County.
The 2015 Titans varsity
football team, under the direction
of head coach Bryan Case in his
sixth season as head coach of the
SCC football program (37-17
record for the Titans), and in his
15th season overall with a career
record of 113-38, is coming off
a very successful 2014 campaign
where the Titans finished 8-4
overall and advanced to the
2014 Class 1A state quarterfinal
round of the football playoffs.
SCC has eight returning starters
on offense and another eight
returning starters on defense
returning from last year’s playoff
team.
“We’re excited and looking
forward to the 2015 campaign,”
said coach Case. “We’ve had one
of the best off-season in SCC
history and we also had a very
good camp. If we can manage
to stay healthy, I think we could
have another exciting year of
Titan football.”
Among the top returning
players for this year’s squad
include senior Rylan Richardson,
who was an all-state selection
in 2014 and the Most Valuable
Defensive Player of the Year
for Class 1A District 7; senior
Derrick Henkenius, an all-state
selection and unanimous alldistrict selection at quarterback;
senior Cyle King, a second-
team all-district selection at
running back in 2014; senior
Colin Carlson, a second-team
all-district selection at defensive
line; and junior Kody Case,
who was a first-team all-district
selection at defensive back.
Richardson led the Titans a
season ago with 117 tackles
including three sacks, two fumble
recoveries and an interception.
Henkenius
threw
for
1,997 yards passing, had 17
touchdowns and completed 55.8
percent of his passes. He also
returns as the top rusher for SCC
as he had 12 rushing touchdowns
on 143 attempts for 494 yards.
King finished with nine rushing
touchdowns on 76 carries for
392 rushing yards and he had 32
receptions for 604 yards and six
touchdown receptions.
Carlson finished with 39
tackles and two sacks a season
ago for SCC.
Kody Case finished with 538
yards receiving while grabbing
38 catches including three for
touchdowns a season ago. In
addition, Case had 35.5 tackles
and five interceptions on the
defensive side of the ball.
Also returning as letterwinners
include seniors Cole Jacobs,
Nick Robinson, Nolan Ford,
Carter Ludwig, Ty Riley and
Korey Vogel; juniors Logan
Fonken, Cody Schumacher,
Ashten Halvorsen, Brendan
Henkelman, Jaden Nesbitt,

2014 while Cole Jacobs caught
seven passes for 89 yards and
one touchdown. Fonken finished
with 60 carries for 248 yards
rushing. Halvorsen had five
rushing touchdowns in 2014 on

Cade Carstens, Joe Snyder,
Alexander Campbell and Jesse
Casey, and sophomores Tanner

The Titans will be competing
in Class 1A, District 7 again this
fall and the district has a couple
teams expected to be solid once
again in 2015 — St. Edmond of
Fort Dodge and Madrid.
“At this point, I would have
Madrid as the early favorite with
Fort Dodge St. Edmond right on
their heels,” said coach Case. “I
would also like to think that we
will push for the district title.”
SCC opens up District 7 play
Friday, Sept. 11 at Woodward
Academy. SCC will face Fort
Dodge St. Edmond in Lake City
Friday, Sept. 25, while the Titans
will travel to Madrid Oct. 9. The

SCC netters with many new faces
By Doug Dornath
South
Central
Calhoun’s
varsity volleyball team is coming
off its best season ever in the
history of Titan volleyball as
the 2014 Titans finished 41-1
overall in a season that ended
at the Class 2A State Volleyball
Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
But the majority of those
players from last year’s state
tournament run are gone to
graduation and SCC head coach
Wade Voith will be working with
a number of new faces on the
varsity roster this fall.
Among the top returning
players for the 2015 SCC varsity
volleyball campaign include
junior Allison Birks, sophomore
Teylor Anderson and seniors
Shelby Kingery and Julia Seil.
Birks is the most experienced
Titan with varsity playing time
as she finished with 31 blocks,
27 kills, 24 digs and five assists
in 2014.
Anderson saw action as a
freshman as she played primarily
as a back-up setter as she had 63
assists a season ago. Anderson
finished with 20 digs and was
13-for-13 serving in a limited
role.
Kingery and Julia Seil also
saw limited action on the court
for the Titans varsity team last
season. Kingery finished 7-for-7
serving with two aces and added
two digs for the year, while Julia
Seil was 4-for-5 serving on the
season with three assists and one
kill.
Other seniors on the varsity
squad for SCC this season
include Jordan Hepp, Taylor
Hepp and Courtney Kilpatrick.
Aliyah Taylor joins Birks as a
member of the squad from the
junior class. Sophomores along
with Anderson include Drew
Pochinski and Hannah Seil.
There is one freshman listed

play at Pocahontas Area/L-M in
Pocahontas Thursday, Aug. 27.

league matches to begin the
month against St. Mary’s and
Alta-Aurelia in Lake View Sept.

County. On Sept. 18, SCC travels
to Gowrie to take on Southeast
Valley while the Titans conclude
the month of September against
league foes at home in Rockwell
City against GT/RA and Sioux
Central on Sept. 24.
In October, SCC will face
Manson Northwest Webster in a
league match Oct. 1 in Lake City
while the Titans travel to East

Titan runners ready for upcoming season
By Doug Dornath
Both the girls and boys cross
country programs at South
Central Calhoun are excited for
the upcoming season. SCC head
coach Brian Knapp is entering
his 29th season as head coach for
the schools program and he feels
it’s a great time to be a part of the
Titans cross country program.
“I am very excited about where
our program is right now,” said
Knapp. “Our numbers are solid
for a Class 2A program and we
have kids who want to succeed at
distance racing. It will be fun to
see how the season unfolds. I am
truly hoping to have both teams
with a shot at the state cross
country meet come season’s
end.”
Knapp said the girls squad this
fall is a veteran squad while the
boys team is young but full of
talent as well.
Here’s a glance at the teams for
SCC this fall:
Girls outlook
South
Central
Calhoun’s
varsity girls program has a ton of
experience returning as six of the
squads runners have state meet
experience.
“A very veteran group,” said
coach Knapp of the Titan girls
roster. “Mady Dick is a threetime state qualifier. Sydney Batz
is a two-time state qualifier and
Megan Hardy, Abby Clark,
Katelyn Decker and Sarah
Van Hulzen are one-time state
qualifiers. We should have
tremendous depth on the girl’s
team. If one girl goes down
injured or ill, we have quality to
replace them with.”
Seniors on the girls squad
include team captain Sarah Van
Hulzen, Mady Dick, Mallory
Willett and Kaelyn Boyd.
Juniors on the squad included
Megan Hardy, Sydney Batz,
Katelyn Decker, Abby Clark,
Anastasia
Wiederin-Sackfield
and Jordan Ludwig. SCC has
a pair of sophomore runners
— Isabella Thompson and
Meghan Dietrich — and a pair
of freshman runners as well —
Amaliya McCaulley and Lauren
Ukena.
Returning
letterwinners
include Van Hulzen, Dick,
Hardy, Batz, Decker, Clark,
Wiederin-Sackfield, Thompson
and Dietrich.
As far as the Twin Lakes
Conference meet goes, Knapp
expects Pocahontas Area/L-M to
be the front-runner.
“PAC/L-M is the obvious
favorite with most of their Class
1A state championship team
returning from a year ago,”
said Knapp. “I would expect
Southeast Valley and ourselves
to be very tough as well.”
Boys outlook
SCC has a number of big shoes
to fill from a season ago as far
as the boys team goes, but there
are many runners on the team
who provide the team with both
competitive desire and youthful
team depth as well.
“We graduated 10 seniors
from this group and have no
seniors or juniors returning,”
said coach Knapp. “However,
we have 15 ninth and 10th grade
runners who are hungry and
want to succeed. We have three
quality letterwinners back in
Chase Pibal, Nic Englin and
Jacob Stephenson. Spencer
Moon is a two-time Twin Lakes
Conference champion at the
middle school level who will
have a great impact immediately.
In addition, we have other boys
who are quality young runners
who will make an impact.”
Pibal, Englin Stephenson,
Mitchell Clark, Sam Corey,
Chad McClintock and Colten
Morenz are all sophomores on
the squad while Moon, Kadyn
Steinborn, Adrian Diaz, Sam
Musselman, Mason Henry, Kyle
Poen, Matthew Clark and Colin
Johnson are incoming freshmen
at SCC.
In the Twin Lakes Conference
championship chase, Knapp said
there are a couple of teams who
have strong squads while he
also has high aspirations for his
young squad.
“Southeast Valley and AltaAurelia have to be the early
favorites,” said Knapp of
the Twin Lakes Conference
potential contenders. “However,
this young group I have should
develop very well and could
push for a high place in the
conference.”
The 2015 Twin Lakes
Conference championships are
scheduled for Oct. 17 in Laurens.
The Class 2A state qualifying
meet will be held at a site to be
determined Thursday, Oct. 22.
The Titans host their own
invitational meet — the South
Central Calhoun Invitational —
Oct. 6 at Lake City Country Club
at 4:30 p.m.
The teams are assisted by Carol
Newland in her 15th season as an
assistant while team manager is
senior Ryan Martin.
