Forecast LE September 2016 Clubhouse 797-2339 Pro Shop 797-5828 Dear Fellow Members, This season marks Rick Keding’s 25th year of dedicated service to our club. In an era when people change jobs with increasing frequency, 25 years of service is an amazing accomplishment. Rick’s tenure as our Pro and General Manager is a testament to his unwavering commitment, ability to grow and adapt with the times. Putting things in perspective, when Rick came to the BCC: • Callaway just introduced its “revolutionary” stainless steel Big Bertha driver • We were playing golf with metal spikes • There were no Titleist Pro V golf balls Off the course even more has changed. When Rick arrived at the BCC… • There were no cell phones. • WalMart stores were in a handful of small towns. • Technology meant fax machines, VCRs, Sony Walkmans, and IBM Selectric typewriters. Cameras used film, and disposable cameras were the latest thing. • Smokers could still light up on airplanes, in offices and restaurants. • Men wore ties to the office. • You could buy a new Pontiac or Oldsmobile and you could fly on Pam Am or TWA. • You could drink a Schlitz and watch “Dallas” on a Zenith. • Television offered only a half-dozen channels; cable TV had not yet come into its own. • Junk mail consisted of circulars and catalogues delivered by the postal carrier, and Spam was something your mother once bought in the grocery store. • Microwaves were a new gadget that some people already had in their kitchens. • Water came out of the faucet, not a bottle. • No one had heard of the Internet, Google, Starbucks, Silicon Valley, Harry Potter, global warming, .com, the Weather Channel, online dating, Seinfeld, BlackBerry, Facebook, Enron, email, and business casual. Through it all, one thing has remained constant...Rick’s dedication to the BCC and its membership. Our Club, community and membership have changed tremendously over the past 25 years. Rick’s counsel, insight and tireless efforts have positioned the BCC as one of the preeminent country clubs in Upstate New York. We also owe a debt a gratitude to MaryLee Keding. From planning our fabulous children holiday parties to making hundreds of calls to find substitutes for league, and everything in between, MaryLee has been there every step of the way. Please mark your calendar for Friday, October 7th and join your fellow members in a special happy hour celebration in recognition of Rick’s 25 years of service to our Club. Details to follow. See you at the Club, Jim Peduto President, BCC Board of Governors REPORT from the GENERAL MANAGER With the celebration of Labor Day, we are also having one of the hottest and driest summers come to an end. The pool has had over 5,000 visitors this summer which is an amazing number considering its size. I am very proud of the entire pool staff for the job they did this year. The golf course remains in great condition even during the drought like weather. Rocco and his crew have done an outstanding job keeping the turf healthy and at the same time continuing forward with the course restoration. With the fall season approaching we will be modifying some of our hours of operation to better match up with our usage. This is necessary to stay within our payroll budget. I apologize if this creates an inconvenience. There is still a lot of fall golf to be played so come out and enjoy it. Rick Keding Men’s One Day Member-Guest Fri. Panigrosso, Esq., Club Historian, Raconteur and International Man of Leisure Fourteen years ago, Historian Emeritus Dick Ringwood wrote a fantastic retrospective about the Shawkey Sports Dinner that was held annually at BCC from 1959 through 1971. As always, Ringy’s account was complete, informative and entertaining. This subject is worth revisiting because we have recently uncovered some interesting documentation from this event. Historically, BCC’s past efforts in delivering this gala event has documented an era in sports right before sport became big business and arguably the dominating factor in popular culture. Initially called “Sports Night”, the evening would feature speeches by three to four A-List sports celebrities and also award a local individual. The annual event was renamed The Stan Shawkey Memorial Sports Dinner after the 1963 passing of Mr. Shawkey. Mr. Shawkey was a respected and successful restaurateur, but he was also a motivated promoter of BCC. As events chairman he was able to persuade two World Golf Hall of Famers in Gene Littler and Arnold Palmer to play an exhibition match in 1961 for $3,700.00. At the time Littler was the US Open Champion and Palmer, already “The King”, won the Open Championship. Even with inflationary adjustments, what would it cost to arrange for current champs Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson to play BCC? Seven figures?! Mr. Shawkey was an amazing man; looking back he was the namesake of an amazing evening. The correspondence between BCC and the various entities necessary to arrange for talent to speak at the event survives in our archives. These letters document events that would never happen today. At the time, agents were not prevalent and often teams arranged for their players to earn extra money on the lecture circuit. NFL Hall of Fame owner of the Bills, the late Ralph Wilson corresponded directly with BCC on behalf of quarterback Jack Kemp. Mr. Wilson’s letter states Kemp would be allowed to speak provided he was back in time for practice at week’s end. The Bills also gave BCC Mr. Kemp’s home telephone number and address for arrangements. The New York Football Giants similarly gave BCC the personal contact information for kicker Pete Gogolak and also negotiated his appearance fee of $250.00. To bind the deal, BCC sent Mr. Gogalak a letter for him to countersign. We have that letter as well as others from a wide range of celebrities. The most interesting is from NFL Hall of Famer Don Maynard. The former Jets wide receiver countersigned a letter agreeing to appear void of an appearance fee or travel arrangements. When he returned the letter, Mr. Maynard hand wrote a PS stating, “Pickup would be best at Shea about 4:30 pm (maybe or 4:00) or we can get to airport ourselves”. When teams did not provide access to their players, BCC turned to another resource, the players’ corporate sponsors. We have a telegram from General Motors arranging for Tom Harmon’s appearance. Sheraton Hotels made arrangements for Bob Rosburg. Monsanto Company worked on behalf of Doug Ford. As personal services contracts have become highly collectible, it would be interesting to have the letters from players, teams and sponsors professionally appraised. Baseball’s first prominent agent, Frank Scott corresponded often with BCC. Mr. Scott previously worked for the Yankees and once when visiting Yogi Berra, Yogi’s wife noticed he was not wearing a watch. Mrs. Berra offered Mr. Scott his choice of watches from a tray of over twenty. Up until that time, Yogi most often received a cheap wrist watch as payment for personal appearances. When Scott was fired by the Yankees shortly thereafter, he decided to arrange for better appearance fees for baseball’s stars and became the sport’s first agent. Yoo Hoo ended up paying Yogi more then the Yankees. Of all Mr. Scott’s correspondences with BCC; however, the 4 most interesting are on behalf of Yankees Hall of Famer and former Binghamton Triplet Whitey Ford. There was a lot of back and forth about BCC not revealing Mr. Ford’s appearance fee (It was $500…. SSSHHHH). While not collectible like the service contracts, our archives also have some financial records for a few of the events which are extremely interesting. Fans of the television show Restaurant Impossible will know that to maximize profits most restaurants price menu items at one-third food cost, one-third labor and one-third profit. BCC was able to account for the additional entertainment expenses and still deliver a profit to the club. For example, the 1970 ticket cost was $13.00 and the cost break down was: $5.00 food; $1.00 tip and tax; $2.00 for 2 included cocktails; and $5.00 for the celebrity costs. Additional bar sales accounted for labor and also delivered a tidy profit for the club. It pays to cater to those who like to party. It would be virtually impossible for BCC to put together an event such as the Stan Shawkey Memorial Sports Dinner on an annual basis. Today’s athlete makes so much money that most no longer need to “barn storm” for extra money in the off season and those that do command unreasonable fees. But, maybe if we got creative like the past membership did when they solicited the athletes’ sponsors, something could materialize. Maybe the parent club of the Binghamton Stud Muffins would like to supply speakers in an effort to boost attendance at NYSEG Stadium. Maybe some of the pros playing the Dick’s Open would like to arrive early, play a round at a true Tillinghast and stick around for a lively evening of food and merriment. Maybe history can repeat itself.
