Impacting Lives ... Working Together
annual report
for fiscal year ending december 31, 2013
From the Board President
Dear Friends,
It is an honor to present the Rice Health Foundation’s 2013
Annual Report to you. This was a year of progress for the
Foundation. We experienced tremendous growth in our
programs and fundraising activities to help Rice Memorial
Hospital achieve its mission.
Every day, the Foundation has the distinct privilege
of working with people like you, who have a strong
commitment to ensuring a vibrant healthcare community,
state of the art technology, and highly trained staff.
Working with you, we ended the year stronger and ready to
meet the challenges of the future.
I present this report to you with much gratitude for your support and a reminder that
the work is not complete. Let’s continue to work together so that our hospital can
remain the provider of choice for quality healthcare services in our region.
Thank you for your support!

In 2013, Alix Behm completed seven years on the Rice Health Foundation Board of
Directors. During her tenure, Alix served on the Finance and Grant Committees and
was instrumental in launching the Foundation’s first multi-million-dollar capital
campaign. Alix and her husband Ken live in Willmar and own the Home State Bank.
About her service, Alix said, “It was a privilege to serve and be a part of the
fundraising efforts to improve the Hospital and the Care Center.”
From the Executive Director
Financials
The national healthcare landscape with all its uncertainty,
apprehension, and vagueness, is ripe with opportunity!
The opportunity to adapt, change and remain relevant.
The opportunity to strengthen relationships and
collaborate. The opportunity to do all we can together,
to ensure quality healthcare services remain local and
available now. The opportunity to look to the future and
determine what each of us can do, to leave our hospital
stronger than we met it.
Rice Health Foundation is pleased to report another successful year of helping
Rice Memorial Hospital provide the best possible care to the people of west central
Minnesota. The Foundation reported gifts and grants of $1,444,332 in fiscal year
2013. Generous support from caring people has helped purchase life-saving medical
equipment, enhance and expand care delivery, and build and renovate new spaces.
Philanthropy plays a major role in Rice Memorial Hospital’s ability to provide quality
care to the community. Disbursements totaling $1,268,840 were made to Rice for
these, and many other healthcare programs.
This report highlights the many stories that made 2013
successful and memorable — Rice Memorial Hospital
family and community members contributing sacrificially
to improve the lives of seniors at Rice Care Center; the Pierce Family leading the
charge to bring state of-the-art breast diagnostic technology to the area; a quiet,
unassuming person, who made provision in her will to support hospice services.
These and other stories are evidence of the wonderful things we can achieve working
together for the strength, vitality and future success of our hospital.
Thank you for another year of support.
I look forward to working with you to seize many opportunities in 2014.
Sincerely,
Rice continues to cover all administrative and operating expenses for the Foundation
so that 100% of funds raised are used for charitable purposes.

Why Plan a Gift?
Everyone has an opportunity to leave a legacy for the community they love, live in
and make a living. Giving back is the single most enduring way to ensure you leave
your community better than you met it.
There are many different gifts and many ways to give.
A planned gift is often the easiest way to make a significant gift, reduce taxes on your
estate, and ensure that your values extend beyond your lifetime.
Rice Memorial Hospital is the premier provider of quality, compassionate healthcare
services in our region. Rice Health Foundation strengthens Rice Hospital’s ability to
save lives, provide comfort, support health and wellness, and deliver quality care now
and in the future. Your gifts to the Foundation make all these things happen right
here in our area.
Following are conversations that shed some light on why people invest in the
experience of creating a legacy to support healthcare in our community.
she felt strongly about sharing what she had with others who were less fortunate than
her. She made many gifts to individuals anonymously.
How important was it for Fran to leave a bequest gift instead of making a
major gift during her life time?
Gordy was cared for by Rice Hospice staff, an experience that a family member never
forgets. She wanted to leave something in her will to allow the Hospice program to
help others. Fran was not a wealthy person. A bequest gift to Hospice allowed her to
make a significant gift that she could not afford to make during her lifetime.
Since Fran was a private person, and did not want any public recognition, what
would she think of us sharing the story of her generosity and her wonderful
gift to support Hospice services in Willmar?
Fran would say, now that I am no longer around, it’s okay.
What advice do you have for others like Fran who can make a significant
difference for healthcare in the community?
There are many others like Fran in and around the community. I hope sharing her
story will inspire them to make a difference too. That would make her very pleased.
Frances Anderson
Frances Anderson (Nov. 10, 1921 to Sep. 17, 2013) was a very private person. She
lived quietly in Willmar and worked closely with her financial advisor to manage her
philanthropic giving and other financial affairs.
Fran had a deep appreciation for Rice Memorial Hospital’s Hospice program and
made annual gifts for many years to help fund hospice services.
Knowing and appreciating the value hospice services play in the lives of the dying
and the grieving, Fran took the next step and notified the Foundation in 2011,
of her intent to make a planned gift to support Hospice Sentimental Journey and
Complementary Therapy programs at Rice.
We sat down with Fran’s financial advisor to discuss what philanthropy meant to
Fran and how important it was for her to make a planned gift to ensure hospice
services continue on the community:
Who was Frances Anderson the person?
Fran was a quiet, private person. Even though she was a private person, she was well
informed about what was going on in the community. She enjoyed reading and cross
word puzzles. Fran and her husband Gordy (who passed away seven years ago), were
not wealthy. They were great savers and had big hearts for helping others.
What inspired her to give so generously to benefit others?
Fran felt she was blessed and always wanted to share what she had with others. She
supported her church, the hospital and other local charities. But most importantly,
4
Dr. Roger and Kay Strand
What inspires you to give?
We have been so fortunate in many ways, and at this stage in our lives it seems natural
for us to want to give back. It’s clear to both Kay and me that we’ve been positively
influenced by parents who seemed always willing to share what they had to benefit
others. Happily, we believe that this way of thinking has been passed along to our
children.
How important is it for you to give generously to support healthcare and the
other causes you love?
Rice Memorial Hospital provided the best of surgical facilities and an excellent
professional staff which allowed me to practice my profession. For ourselves and our
children it has also been a place of healing over the years — and for our youngest son
and our grandchildren, it’s been the very place where they safely began their lives.
Kay and I feel it is important to acknowledge this debt, and we’re very pleased to
offer our help in making sure that quality healthcare services continue to be
available for others.
Anything else you would like to share?
We’ve learned that there are gift vehicles that make it possible to provide both for
our family and for ongoing gifts to the community. We’ve also learned that the Rice
Health Foundation staff is ready and able to provide expertise in planning, whatever
the size of the gift might be.
Rice Visionary Society
Membership in the Rice Visionary Society is open to any individual or
couple who has made provisions for Rice in their will or other deferred
gift plan. Benefits include invitations to the Foundation recognition
events. Rice Health Foundation will also list the Visionary Society
members in a special section of the donor recognition wall and in
the Foundation’s Annual Report (if printed recognition is so desired
by the donor).
We hope that you will tell us when you have included Rice in your
estate plan. We appreciate the opportunity to say “thank you” for your
generosity. Letting us know of your intentions does not create any
obligation on your part. And, recognition of your gift may well inspire
generosity in others.

Grateful Patients
Recognize Caregivers
At Rice Memorial Hospital, exceptional healthcare and compassion go hand in hand.
Our patients often express their gratitude for this excellent care in a variety of ways —
through their kind words, smiles, letters of thanks and financial contributions.
Many patients and their families contribute financially to benefit Rice Hospital and
show their appreciation. The Grateful Patient Program provides an opportunity to
recognize the care you or a loved one received. A patient may honor staff, a physician,
an area of care, or a clinical program while making a tangible, meaningful impact on
our ability to continue that care for others.

Harvey and Delores Pierce
Harvey and Delores Pierce grew up in Willmar, and have a retirement home in the
area. When Harvey retired from a 44 year career with American Family Insurance,
the company honored him with a generous gift to the nonprofit of his choice. Harvey
and Delores chose Rice Health Foundation, recognizing the outstanding work that
is being done to benefit the health of the community. The gift was set up as a donordirected endowment, allowing Harvey and Delores to advise the Foundation on how
the spendable portion from the investment will be used each year.
What inspires you to give?
Both our parents were very committed in supporting the whole community. We have
been very fortunate and feel it is important to give back as well.
What did you do to successfully pass on your values of philanthropy to
your children?
Delores and I have led by example. Our children always saw and participated in
our philanthropic activities. We believe it is never too early to teach the important
role philanthropy plays in the community. This same value is being passed on to
our grandchildren. I remember when American Family Insurance was matching
donors’ contributions to build the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison,
Wisconsin. Three of our grandchildren set up and raised $50.00 from a lemonade
stand, which was matched by American Family to support the building of the
hospital. Our children passed that giving spirit on to our grandchildren. And
now, at the age of 21 each grandchild will become involved with the Pierce Family
Foundation to expand their experience from personal giving to organizational giving.
You have been a donor to the Rice Health Foundation for many years,
supporting programs that have significantly improved the health and quality
of life of people in the community. What would you say to others who have the
ability to do the same but are not sure how?
It is as simple as picking up the phone and asking, “How can I help?” Very easy to do!
6
Pierce Family
We are grateful for the Pierce Family Foundation’s support in 2013, that
resulted in Rice’s ability to offer new breast diagnostic technology for the
people of west central Minnesota. Why was that project important to you?
Harvey and I knew after a discussion with you (Shirley Carter and Jean Raatz) at the
Rice Health Foundation, that this new technology was important for our community.
Harvey’s sister and a dear friend of mine died from breast cancer. It is important that
we have the latest in breast diagnostic tools here in the community.
Anything else you would like to share?
We deeply appreciate Rice, all area healthcare providers, and the Rice Health
Foundation for keeping quality services in our west central Minnesota region.
We will always be supportive of Rice and encourage others to do the same.

TRI4EVR Raises Money for Cancer Care
Members of the TRI4EVR Triathlon and Running Club have a
purpose beyond running, biking and swimming. They are dedicated
to raising money in a race against cancer.
The group was founded in 2009 by Kris and Joann Kolstad of
Willmar, and Bill and Roxanne Lorenz of Benson. During the
club’s first five years, TRI4EVR donated over $8,000 to help patients
receiving treatment at Willmar Regional Cancer Center. With
100% of contributions and membership fees given for cancer care,
they call themselves a “zero-profit” organization.
Kris Kolstad battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2005. He underwent
chemo and radiation treatments over several months. Once his
cancer treatments ended, he was eager to get back in shape and start
competing again. It took a while, but it did happen.
Kris shares, “My only wish is to give others hope that cancer is
beatable. I was given another chance at life. With the help of my good
friends, TRI4EVR was created to raise money for cancer charities.
Now I plan to give something back.”
Their nearly 100 members, between the ages of seven and 70+, train
together year-round, and come from areas near—Willmar, Spicer,
New London, Benson, Kerkhoven — and as far away as Kimball and
Alexandria. They have members of all levels of ability, from newbies to
experienced marathoners and Ironman triathletes.
Making Life Easier for Patients and Families
When you or a family member are going through treatment for cancer,
anything to make life easier is appreciated. Your gifts to Rice Health
Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund do just that. It may be a gas card to
help with travel expenses for treatments, a wig for someone who loses
their hair during chemotherapy, a massage or another complementary
therapy to improve well-being, or just the peaceful and healing
atmosphere Willmar Regional Cancer Center offers.
In 2013, your gifts to the Cancer Care Fund provided 60 wigs to
patients experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatments.
The Willmar Regional Cancer Center at Rice Hospital has a boutique,
filled with beautiful new wigs, and a professional hair stylist available
to find the perfect match for each patient.
Last year, the Willmar Regional Cancer Center and Rice
Rehabilitation Services collaborated to develop and offer a new
Cancer Survivorship program.
Caregivers received specialized
training on the important
role of physical therapists on
the survivorship care team.
Willmar Regional Cancer
Center patients are now being
referred to Rice Rehabilitation’s
physical therapy team to assist
with regaining range of motion,
reducing lymphedema and
developing an exercise plan. The
program provides an integrative physical therapy approach to treating
patients during cancer treatment and recovery. Training for staff in
both areas was funded by gifts made to the Foundation.

FOCUS ON: Rice Care Center Progress
In late 2012, Rice Memorial Hospital began a multi-year
redevelopment project to improve the environment of
care for residents at Rice Care Center. The Care Center,
which was built in the mid-1960s, no longer met
current industry standards or supported efficient
staff operations.
Today, residents and staff of Rice Care Center are
enjoying the progress of this $6 million project.
In April 2013, residents moved into Cushman
Cottage, the first of two neighborhoods planned for
the Care Center.
Upon completion, the Care Center will feature
separate “neighborhoods” with private entrances,
smaller gathering places, and larger spaces for meals
and community activities. The staff has transitioned to
a new neighborhood care delivery model and residents are
enjoying their new private rooms with their own
private bathrooms.
“Working in the same
neighborhood, there is
more getting to know each
other. The residents call me by
name. I can learn their routines,
likes and dislikes. Working through
the chaos of construction was
all worth it.”
— Sam Johnson
In addition to the private rooms with private bathrooms, each resident’s suite will
contain up-to-date safety features including ceiling lifts that provide
safe transport.
Sophia House, the second neighborhood, will be completed
and fully occupied by summer of 2014. The final phase of
the project will begin the fall of 2014. This phase includes
a fully renovated facility kitchen, an activity center
for large group activities and gatherings, a café, and
beauty/barber shop.
Rice Health Foundation has committed to raising
$2 million to help reduce the amount of borrowed
funds and make the project economically feasible for
Rice Memorial Hospital.
We have raised $1,617,800 to date. Please contact the
Foundation at 320-231-4141 to make your gift, and
complete this place where seniors will feel proud to
call home.

“I just love the lift.
It is so much better
than the old lift they had
to wheel into my room. It’s a
smooth ride, and is so easy
[for staff] to operate.”
— Kathryn VanderWeyst
Rice Care Center and Therapy Suites
rooms are now equipped with ceiling
lift systems thanks to a grant
from Rice Health Foundation.
The easy-to-use lifts provide
safe, smooth and effortless
transfers for residents, patients
and caregivers. Designed for
residents and patients with
limited mobility or little-to-no
weight bearing capabilities, ceiling
lifts dramatically reduce or eliminate
transfer-related injuries to patients
and caregivers.

Rice Employee Campaign
Employee support for Rice’s mission through the annual Employee Campaign is a
significant part of Rice’s culture of philanthropy. Over the last decade, employees have
contributed half a million dollars to fund a variety of programs and initiatives.
In 2013, Rice Employees began the Rice Care Center Live Laugh Thrive Capital
Campaign with three-year pledge commitments totaling $201,000 to date.
Rice Care Center is improving the facility to meet the needs of seniors in the
community. The building and renovation project is over half way through multiple
phases. Thanks to the financial support from the Rice family of employees.

Healing Our Community ... Together
In 2013, Rice Health Foundation provided $1,268,840 to Rice Memorial Hospital to support a variety of programs and services, as well as technology and equipment. This support
is possible because of your donations to Rice Health Foundation designated funds and endowments. Your generosity supports the vitality and quality of care of Rice Memorial
Hospital, while improving the health and well-being of the people in west central Minnesota.
The Rice Health Foundation Endowment was established to provide a stable and consistent source of funds to help meet the changing needs in healthcare. Grants approved by the
Foundation Board from endowments accounted for more than $200,000 in support to the Hospital in 2013. Some of the endowment grants awarded are highlighted here.
All of this great work in our community happens through the dedication of our friends and neighbors, and through the generosity of people just like you.
LUCAS Chest
Compression System
The device performs chest compressions
more efficiently and effectively than
a highly trained caregiver. Having
the LUCAS device in the Emergency
Department frees caregivers to provide
other life-saving interventions. Already
a standard piece of equipment in the
Willmar Ambulance rigs, a Foundation
grant has made one available to the
Emergency Room staff.
Newborn Axillary Thermometers
Charitable support provides axillary
thermometers to parents of newborns.
Before discharge, parents receive
education on the proper use of the axillary
thermometer and elevated temperature
readings that warrant contacting their
physician. Sending parents home with
axillary thermometers ensures they have
the same instrument at home that they
received training on in the hospital.
10
Community Medication
List Initiative
This is a collaborative effort in the
healthcare community to promote the
importance of an accurate medication
list for every patient. Many patients who
are admitted to Rice do not know what
medications they take, the dosages, or
have a list with them. This program allows
pharmacists to review medications with
each patient, and stress the importance of
maintaining an accurate medication list.
Patients are discharged with an accurate
list and a special bag to carry medication
containers to clinic appointments.
Simulation Training
Healthcare simulation training scenarios
are very valuable tools that teach clinical
staff how to respond to (simple or
complex) situations to improve the safety,
effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare
services. The ability to learn in a non-stress
simulated scenario environment increases
leadership, teamwork and communication
among caregivers from multiple
departments and positively impacts patient
care. Charitable support has provided the
resources needed for simulation training
throughout the organization.
Honoring Choices Healthcare
Directive Initiative
The Alert Program
Rice Rehabilitation sees children every day
with various types of sensory dysfunction.
Occupational Therapists have been trained
in the Alert Program for Self-Regulation,
which helps children learn a series of
strategies that enhance their ability to learn,
interact with others, study or play.
Dental Hygiene Instrument Kits
Rice Regional Dental Clinic has been
providing dental services to low income
families from 17 counties in the region
since 2007. This state-of-the-art clinic is a
collaboration between Rice Hospital and
the University of Minnesota School of
Dentistry. In addition to meeting the dental
needs of the un- and under-insured, the
dental clinic serves as a training facility
for dental students at the University and a
venue for area dentists to collaborate and
provide basic dental care to those who need
it. Foundation funds purchase equipment
for the clinic.
Home-based Cardiac
Rehab Program
Grant funds made it possible to develop a
home-based cardiac rehabilitation program
to increase access and participation for
low to moderate risk heart patients. The
convenience of following a cardiac rehab
program at home helps patients who have
long distances to travel, need to return to
work, or cannot afford the out-of-pocket
costs associated with the clinic-based
program. Participation in a cardiac
rehabilitation program increases the
likelihood of long-term lifestyle changes.
The goal of the Community Advanced
Healthcare Planning Team is to provide a
community platform to facilitate planning
for healthcare decisions. A grant from the
Foundation is being used to train volunteers
using the Honoring Choices Minnesota
model and provide opportunities for
community-based conversations regarding
end-of-life care planning. “Discussions Over
Dinner” is meant to encourage friends and
families to talk about how they want to die,
their plans for end of life, and arrangements
after their passing.

FOCUS ON: Improving Breast Diagnostics
Proceeds from the 2013 Holiday Festival purchased a digital imaging system and
navigation instruments for use during surgical breast biopsies.
This breast diagnostic technology facilitates the removal of more precise amounts
of suspicious tissue needed for further evaluation, it enables surgeons to examine
tumor margins immediately following excision, and allows surgeons and patients
more flexibility with surgery scheduling. The addition of this technology has opened
the door for radioactive seed placement for tumor localization. This helps surgeons
precisely locate and remove breast tumors, especially those too microscopic to feel.
“This cutting-edge
technology complements
the skills of our surgeons and
allows Rice to be a regional
leader in breast care ... for just
one reason: the patient.”
— Dr. Ken Flowe, Chief Medical
Officer, Rice Memorial Hospital
Celebrating Breast Cancer Survivors
General Surgeons (left to right): Dr. Steven Bell, Dr. Steven Kidd, and Dr. Thomas Lange
Support from a generous community is allowing Rice Hospital to improve the standard
of care for women receiving breast biopsies, improving their outcomes as well as greatly
reducing the level of anxiety and stress associated with the time it takes to receive
biopsy results.
Dr. Ken Flowe, Chief Medical Officer at Rice Memorial Hospital, says, “This cuttingedge technology complements the skills of our surgeons and allows Rice to be a
regional leader in breast care. We have minimized the amount of tissue that needs to
be removed, minimized the time in the operating room, as well as maximized safety
and cosmetic outcome for just one reason: the patient.”

Annual Holiday Festival
2013 Holiday
Festival Committee
The Holiday Festival is the major fundraising event sponsored by Rice Health
Foundation annually. The proceeds fund many programs offered by Rice Memorial
Hospital to carry out their healing mission. Hard-working volunteers have shown
their commitment to healthcare by helping to raise over $1.2 million in the past
14 years.

Special thanks to the Pierce Family Foundation for their gift to underwrite this
year’s Holiday Festival.
The glamour and intrigue of the “GATSBY” theme filled the room during the
two-day Holiday Festival event. Guests were taken back to the 1920s with music
and décor.
Friday evening’s soiree was a sold out event. Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan
greeted everyone as they arrived to the Gala Dinner and Auction, and a vintage
1920s car was the back drop for many photographs. Following a gourmet meal,
guests bid for numerous items and experiences.
The community came out in strong support of Rice
Health Foundation to raise a record-setting $155,000.
At the Saturday Luncheon and Table Setting Fair, guests enjoyed musical
entertainment by numerous local artists, began holiday shopping at a variety of
business vendor booths, and viewed 30 exceptional table settings presented by
many creative volunteers from the area.
With the help of many, many dedicated volunteers, and generous businesses and
individuals, the Foundation’s 2013 Holiday Festival was a tremendous success. The
community came out in strong support of Rice Health Foundation to raise a recordsetting $155,000. The money raised purchased a digital imaging system and the
radiologic tools needed to improve breast diagnostic services here at Rice Memorial
Hospital. The new technology is already making a tremendous difference for every
single patient who will undergo a breast cancer diagnostic procedure at
Rice Memorial Hospital.

Margaret Negen received
the Rice Health
Foundation’s 2013
Tradition of Caring
Award for her
generous support
and volunteer service
to Rice Hospital.
Red Hot Happy Hour is a community event that celebrates
women’s health sponsored by Rice Memorial Hospital and
Rice Health Foundation.
For 15 years, Margaret
has played the piano
for memorial and weekly
chapel services at Rice Care
Center and served as receptionist in the surgical
waiting room at the Hospital.
Stephen Jorgensen, October 2013 “Employee of the
Month” at Northland Group, Inc. donated funds raised by
his co-workers in his honor to Rice Hospice in memory of
his colleague, Bernie Plageman.
In the mid 70s, Margaret’s mother became a resident at
Rice Care Center (formerly Christian Nursing Home).
She still remembers how impressed she always was
by the cleanliness of the place, the
friendliness of the people
and how well they cared

Foot Lake 4 is an event for the whole family. In June,
2013, a record 784 walkers and runners participated. With
the help of generous sponsors, over $11,000 was raised to
improve heart health in our community.

supporter of
Rice Hospice.
The Rice Hospice Heine Ridler Memorial Golf Tournament
has raised approximately $189,000 over the last 19 years.
Rice Hospice helps people live life as fully as possible,
offering dignity when there is not a cure, and surrounding
families with love at one of life’s most challenging times.

Margaret has a long history with Rice. She was born
and raised in Willmar, and even though she moved to
the cities when she got married, returned to Rice to
have her children.
Needless to say, she
was very pleased
about the decision to

so fond of the residents and staff
and consider it an honor to be a part of their lives. I feel
privileged to extend to my Rice Care Center family
the love and care my mother received when she called
it home.”
In Memoriam
Gifts given in memory of your loved ones have a positive and continuing impact by providing comfort and enhanced care to patients and families in their times of greatest need.
We are honored that the family and friends of the following people made gifts to a Rice Health Foundation fund or endowment in their memory.

We had a great experience at the birthing center when our
baby girl was born. The staff was nice and professional
and the care was just amazing! They gave us great advice
and useful information that we really needed as first
time parents. As a family we definitely received the best
health care quality you could ask for.”

illmar Regional Cancer Center is a wonderful facility.
W
We are so lucky to have an outstanding group of
doctors, nurses and staff, who are excellent at what
they do and care deeply about people.
Roger and I want to say THANK YOU that I was
able to receive treatments for breast cancer right
here in Willmar. I am happy to say that I am
cancer free and doing well. I am also very
grateful for all the support I received from
everyone while receiving care at the Cancer Center.”

I never had the opportunity to take care of my teeth.
I just couldn’t afford it. When I came to the Rice
Regional Dental Clinic, I apologized for the condition
of my teeth. It’s like if I fixed your car and you never
did any kind of maintenance on it. They teach us a lot
about caring for our teeth. Everyone is so friendly. It’s
a good atmosphere.”

ur dad, Gus, was excited to go to the Fagen
O
Fighters WWII Museum in Granite Falls. This trip
was a final wish. The day was a wonderful last
outing for our father and was a very therapeutic
day for all of us. The experience added to the
memories we will have of our father. We had
not heard about the Sentimental Journey
program before. We cannot thank you
enough for doing this.”
