The First “Hoolie In The Park”
On a warm Sunday night in late September a group of local musicians introduced live music to the Riverside International
Friendship Gardens or more specifically the Irish section of the gardens. With a backdrop of the Mississippi and Black Rivers
the group entertained those who attended, as well as others who were out for an evening stroll around the gardens and
wondered what the heck was happening.
The musicians, from left to right Lisa Marchel, Audie Olson, Kyle Humfeld, Tom Nolan and Terry Nolan.
The setting sun reflecting off the river makes
for a fitting backdrop.
Kelly Smith performs an impromptu
demonstration of Irish dancing for the crowd.
A great time was had by all with the mini amphitheater in the garden making a great location to hold events such as this
one. The only minor problem encountered was a past Irish Man of the Year, who brought the bottle of wine but forgot the
opener, but his “faux par” was solved by Jeanine Nolan who happened to have an opener in her purse, which surely says a
lot about the make-up of our group.
News From Around the Groups
Arlene M. Benrud 1943 – 2015
Norman J Kane 1929 - 2015
Mary E. Tracy 1939 - 2015
It is with deep regret that in September we noted the passing of three people with connections to
The Greater La Crosse Area Shamrock Club.
Mary Tracy was a long time club member and was our Irish Rose in 2004.
Arlene Benrud was a past member.
&
Norman Kane, who was a founder member of The Shamrock Club, and was our
Irish Man of the Year in 1976
Our sympathies go out to their families’.
Donations have been made to the Father Rossiter Endowment at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Arlene’s name and to the Aquinas Catholic Schools Foundation in Mary’s name.
2016 Irish Rose & Irish Man Nominations
Once again the time has come for the club to accept nominations for its next Irish Rose and Irish Man.
Per our by-laws, initially, a committee will be formed comprising of the current 2015 Irish Rose and Man, the previous
year’s Irish Rose & Irish Man and the club Chairman, who will make a selection from those nominated. The names of those
nominated will then be presented to the Board of Directors, in an executive session, for approval. The committee may
accept nominations for individuals to be considered from the membership at large. If you have someone you would like to
th
nominate please would you e-mail the name of your nominee to [email protected] before November 14 .
th
Nominees will not be considered if the e-mail is dated after November 14 .
The names of the selected individuals will not be made public until they are introduced at our annual Christmas Party.
Thank you all in advance for taking the time to consider who you would like to represent our club in the upcoming year.
This year, the Shamrock Club ‘Shamrockers’
participated again in the annual ‘Steppin’ Out in
th
Pink’ event on September 12 ! 7 walkers
participated and $805 was raised for the cause!
Linda Pfaff, Shamrockers team leader, wants to
thank each person who walked and raised
additional funds.
The top fund raiser/walker this year was again,
Linda Boyle!! Hopefully sometime in the near
future, these walks won’t be needed as a cure for
cancer will be found! The walkers from left to
right in the accompanying photograph were Linda
Pfaff, Linda Boyle, Linda Smith, Lynn West, Liz
Oelke, Ross West and Carmen West.
2015 Shamrock Club Fun Night
th
This year’s Fun Night will be held on Wednesday November 18 at Shenanigans on French Island. The night will feature a
trivia contest “So You Think You Know La Crosse”. Photographs of La Crosse locations will be shown with contestants
having to put a name to the location. Prizes will be awarded to the two people with the most correct answers. In the event
of more than two people having the same total of correct answers, all names will be placed in a hat and two winners drawn.
At this time further entertainment is being planned to include an exhibition of Irish dancing by dancers from Amanda’s
Academy of Dance as well as live music. Please note that the dancing and music have not been confirmed.
2015 Torchlight Parade

and lights to the Torchlight Parade Float while Rod
Smith supervises the action.
Rod Smith making final adjustments to the
placement of the Shamrock at the rear of the float.
The Torchlight Parade floats rebuild. Thanks to some great ideas by Rod Smith, the trailer we normally use for the
Torchlight, Rotary Lights and St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been updated and turned into a true float. The addition of a three
piece carpeted deck and an easy method of attaching the fringe and lights to the float make set up and tear down a simple
matter. The deck is removable in minutes and the fringe and lights are held on by attached clips, so no more duct tape. In
addition to the lights around the outside, LED strip lights, kindly loaned us by Tom Peterson, were attached to the rear
frame. As can be seen in the following photographs these make a huge difference to the rear of the trailer and might be in
the future plans. Also in the future plans is a custom bench for the Irish Rose and Man to sit on as well as a means of
attaching the magnetic signs to the float instead of the vehicle pulling it. Special thanks go to Rod Smith and Barrie Monks
for the time they put into the float renovation.
2015 Irish Rose Kelly Smith and 2015 Irish Man
John Harrington get into the parade spirit atop our
new and improved float.
At parade rest. Kathleen Ryan, Mark Barton, Kelly Smith,
Linda Boyle and John Harrington at the end of the 2015
Torchlight Parade. A great time was had by all and a huge
thank you goes out to all those involved.
2015 Maple Leaf Parade
The morning of the parade dawned bright and clear promising to be one of the best attended Maple Leaf Parades. Which
was great for The Shamrock Club, because this year we were going to be represented not by one float but by two. For the
first time in a number of years a float was made available for people to ride on during the parade. The trailer was bedecked
in green fringe and wooden leprechauns as well as pumpkins and flowers to add a fall touch. Seating was straw bales
covered in blankets. Not as fancy as some floats but a great way to participate in the parade.
Waiting for the parade to start can be such thirsty
work. Kathy Peterson, Mary Monks and Pam Smith
take the time to check out one of the local
establishments, (They were not the only ones).
There is always someone who wants to check
out the guys in kilts. A member of The
Klondike Kates finds out what a real man
wears under the kilt.

2015 Irish Rose Kelly Smith accompanied by her father Rod
(Irish Man 2008) who was standing in for John Harrington.
John could not attend due to unexpected business reasons.
“That’s All Folks” – Time to wrap it up and put it all away until the next time.
Many thanks go to Tom Peterson, who was able to borrow the trailer from a friend as well as bringing it from Galesville
and towing it in the parade, Trees Today who loaned us the hay bales (we only lost one on the freeway, but that’s another
story) and last but not least the people who helped set up the float.
,2015 Christmas Tree Trimming, Breakfast & Pub Jig
As part of this year’s Rotary Lights celebration, a tree trimming ceremony will be held in Riverside Park starting at 10:00am
st
on November 21 . Following the trimming a breakfast /lunch and Pub Jig, so named because “The Irish Don’t Crawl”, are
being planned by Kelly Smith and John Harrington. See next page for more information.
2015 Rotary Lights Parade
Once again, this year, The Greater La Crosse Area Shamrock Club will be entering a float in the parade. This year the parade
th
will be held on November 27 . Floats will be in place by 4:30pm with the parade kicking off at 5:00pm. The parade will
conclude in Riverside Park but unlike other years, will start from parking lot D at Western Technical College which is located
on the corner of Badger and Seventh Streets.
Discover Wisconsin
st
On November 1 at 5pm Wisconsin Public Television is scheduled to air an episode of Discover Wisconsin, the country’s
longest running travel program, of interest to La Crosse residents. The show goes behind the scenes with Rotary Lights
volunteers to learn what it takes to put the show on year after year. Be sure to set your recorders if you cannot watch on
the original air date or check the Wisconsin Public Television web site for possible repeat broadcast times.
2015 Christmas Party
th

2015 Bantry Friendship Association Ireland Trip
th
th
On October 13 , as part of the 10 Anniversary of twinning with Bantry, Ireland, a 3-member delegation from the La Crosse
Bantry Friendship Association, Linda Pfaff (President), Kathy Spelker (Trustee) and Lynn West (Trustee) left for a five-day
visit to Bantry in West Co Cork! Lodging was provided by the town at a local fully-catered cottage.
A ‘meet & greet’ reception with members of local Bantry businesses and organizations was held Thursday morning for the
group. Two clocks in the shape of Wisconsin, a gift from LBFA and La Crosse’s Mayor Tim Kabat, was presented to Eileen
O’Shea, Director of the Bantry Development and Tourism Association (the reciprocal twinning group in Bantry) and to
County Councilors Mary Hegarty & Michael Collins, county representatives representing Bantry in the Cork County Council.
The group also took greeting cards and signed posters with pictures of different views of La Crosse, magnets and club shirts
as well as two books gifted from the County Historical Society to Bantry’s Library.
Ocean Spray of the Tomah area gifted 150 1oz packets of dried craisons as gifts for the delegation to give out. These were
an enormous hit. While that area is familiar with the cranberry juice, the packets of the dried fruit was new to them.
Delicately etched Christmas ornaments depicting La Crosse’s two bridges and the La Crosse Queen on the Mississippi from
La Crosse’s Preservation Alliance League were also presented to several people including Richard Butler, history professor
now teaching in the UK and to Hazel Vickery, head of Bantry’s Historical Society.
The afternoon following the reception, Mary Hegerty and Eileen O’Shea arranged a meeting with the local theatre group
out of Glengariff, a town just to the west, to share some gifts sent by our local community theatre and then a boat ride to
Garnish Island off the coast of Glengariff – an ‘island garden’ with vast variety of plants, stone work and house built by the
garden’s former owners.
Friday morning, the delegation met with members of the local Lion’s Club and discussed potential exchange ideas between
La Crosse and Bantry.
Richard Butler, recently studying at UW-Madison and who became a friend to the LBFA, traveled back to Bantry from UK to
take the delegation on a tour of Bantry’s historical downtown on Friday.
On Friday evening, The Boston Bar in Bantry, soon to be twinned with La Crosse’s pub, Dublin Square, provided grand social
evening with traditional music and song.
Saturday morning, three guides led by Hazel Vickery, took the delegation on a hiking tour of Widdy Island, located in Bantry
Bay. The island once claimed 760 residents before the Great Hunger of the mid-nineteenth century and currently has only
20 residents. The delegation was treated to a view of one of three battlements built by the English in the early nineteenth
century to stave off French and other intruders. The island is a ‘must see’ for travelers coming to Bantry area. In fact, the
delegation determined that Bantry would be a great destination spot, with wonderful side trips available in several different
directions.
Saturday afternoon, Vincent Cronin, a local hackney who became the delegation’s driver, took them on a tour of Glengariff,
Kenmare and the Beara Peninsula. Especially breathtaking was the drive through Healey’s Pass, a mass of serpentine curves
bringing drivers down several thousand feet from the mountains.
Sunday found the group enjoying a final breakfast at West Lodge in the beautiful town and then heading to Dublin for a
flight out on Tuesday morning. The Bantry community went out of their way to welcome the delegation and show the
group some of the ‘emeralds in their crown’! They will be meeting over the winter and putting together a plan to visit La
Crosse in coming year.
The delegation would like to give an enormous ‘THANK YOU’ to our own Kate Kersten for designing of the posters, cards
and magnets as well as supplying low-cost printing. She is definitely one of the ‘emeralds’ in LBFA’s crown!
Linda Pfaff, President, La Crosse Bantry Friendship Association.
Below is a transcript of an article from the
th
October 7 issue of The Southern Star, a weekly
newspaper based in West Cork.
La Crosse Bantry Friendship Association delegates are visiting
th
th
Bantry this week from October 14 to 18 . Linda Pfaff, Lynn West
and Kathy Spelker are from La Crosse city in Wisconsin USA. The
Friendship Association was set up in 2005 to provide a cultural link
between this city and Bantry.
La Crosse is a melting pot of diverse backgrounds and cultures and
the city’s International Committee runs a wide variety of events
and activities to celebrate this multi-varied heritage of which
Bantry’s heritage is but one. It is one of seven places with which La
Crosse is twinned. The others are Kumbo (Cameroon), Epinal
(France), Dubna (Russia), Luoyang (China), Frieberg (Germany) and
Forde (Norway).
La Crosse International Committee brings together citizens
interested in promoting international awareness and citizen
diplomacy. Their motto is: If your presence doesn’t make an
impact, your absence won’t make a difference.
La Crosse held an “Irishfest” during the summer, which was a
major success and this was helped along by mussels from Bantry
Bay Seafood.
The delegation’s visit to Bantry provides an opportunity for crossfertilization of ideas and planning for ways to collaborate in the
future. During their visit, they’ll be welcomed to a coffee morning
at Bantry Community Tourism Office, take a trip to Glenngariff and
Garinish Island, have a walkabout at Bantry market this Friday and
be taken on an historical walk around town an Whiddy Island.
They’ll be entertained to drinks and traditional music on Friday
night.
