September 2014 - San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association
The San Diego Fine Woodworker Fine Woodworkers Association Newsletter Volume 33 Issue 6 rd Our 33 Year of bringing Woodworkers together The Oct.1 Next Meeting is 7pm st at the Al Bahr Temple, 5440 Kearney Mesa Rd. behind the Hampton Inn October Shop Tour: th Steve Roger’s Shop: October 18 October Program New Technologies, Techniques and Opportunities for Woodworkers The tour begins at 9:00am; coffee and donuts will be served. Like most woodworkers, Steve Rogers started working out of the garage. After moving numerous times during his 25 year career in the Marines and leaving behind 8 garage shops he built along the way, he settled down in North County with enough space to build his dream shop in a 1050 sq. ft. metal building. He insulated and finished the walls and installed a wood floor. His shop was completed this past year. If you have considered building such a shop come and talk to him. Many of the ideas he incorporated in the new shop came from attending numerous San Diego Fine Woodworking shop tours through the years. Nestled in a tangerine orchard, the shop is outfitted with furniture is built in the Greene and Greene craftsman style using Baltic birch with mahogany highlights to give everything the same style and reflecting the kind of furniture he builds for family and friends. Directions: Take I-15 North past 78 then go East up the hill on Mountain Meadow Road. Follow the signs for Meadow Lake Golf Course as Mountain Meadow Road turns to the left. At the four way stop sign, continue on Mountain Meadow Road for two miles, then take a left turn on North View Lane and at the bottom of the hill take a left onto North View Court. 9827 North View Court, Escondido The September program will feature Eric Schleicher from Obrary, a San Diego based technology Startup Company focusing on creating a community of makers worldwide and building an online library of product designs that anyone can download, modify, improve or make for themselves. Their shop, which is tied to the MakerPlace shop, uses digital fabrication equipment like CNC routers and laser cutters. Obrary focuses on sustainable materials like wood & bamboo because they're broadly available everywhere. The program will consist of how Obrary came to be, some of the capabilities of their machines, challenges in getting a design prepared for production, a show and tell of the designs, how they were made and improvements that the audience think would be helpful. This is an open design group that wants feedback so bring your ideas and questions. You can preview their site at Obrary.com. The September meeting will actually be delayed one st week and will be on Wednesday October 1 . See you there Dell Cover, Program Chairman Dale Stauffer, Program Chairman Please check website for changes www.sdfwa.org/ 1 President's Message September, 2014 Report on the 2014 Design in Wood Show This month's newsletter includes fine illustrations of SDFWA member's winning entries from the 2014 Design in Wood Exhibition. These exceptional photos are the work of our own team of photographic experts; Andy Patterson, Lynn Rybarczyk and their assistants. They deserve congratulations plus our sincere thanks for the careful preparation and a long day of very intense effort required to produce the images. Over one hundred of our members entered one or more of their pieces in the exhibition. Congratulations to them as well for the quality of their entries. The President's message for the March newsletter described the board's decision to study the possibility of developing a SDFWA member shop. Here is an update on the status of that initiative. We discussed what an ideal shop would require in terms of space, equipment, location and staffing and, based on those discussions, prepared a preliminary budget. We also surveyed the real estate market for commercial space that might be suitable and talked about alternatives for funding the project. Several of us visited or investigated various collaborative shops in the area for ideas that might pertain to our project. Last month we conducted a shop tour at MakerPlace, a facility on Morena Blvd. which includes a wood shop. The level of interest was surprising. Seventy seven of our members plus five family members showed up. A survey of SDFWA members who attended is underway to sample their impressions and advice about a possible collaboration. If you attended and have not responded to the survey, please do so. There is general agreement that a member shop would be a valuable asset for the association. Although we realize what a complex project this is we will continue explore ways to make it a reality. Our Fall Seminar will be held on the weekend of September 12-14 and may be over by the time you read this. As usual, months of planning and preparation were required to put on this special event. It promises to be very successful; which leads me to this month's member highlight - Ed Gladney. Ed may hold the record for total service to San Diego Fine Woodworkers. It includes a long tenure as chairman of the special events committee and the mentor committee, three terms as SDFWA President, years of supervision in the chair shop at Design in Wood and countless other important contributions of time and effort. Last year Ed stepped up to fill the vacant Vice President post and he has been a valued source of help and advice for me ever since. Last but not least, Ed became Coordinator of the Design in Wood Exhibition following Bob Stevenson's retirement. I welcome any suggestions or ideas about our association's activities. The best way to reach me is by email. mailto:[email protected] The Design In Wood show was a great success again this year. We had 333 entries on display. Of these 103 were sdfwa members and 64 of these received awards. Of these there were 22 first place or “special” awards given to our members. These are pictured in the insert. But it is important to note more than half of SDFWA members that entered received some kind of award. I would like to see more SDFWA participation. We have two levels of awards for members. The Novice award is for members that have never received an award before and the Advanced is for those that have received an award. If you haven’t entered before you should really think about it. There are many opportunities to win. I know competition is heavy but you should not let that stop you. It really feels good to have your work on display and there is a good chance someone might buy your work. Many of you may not know the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association was founded just for the purpose of having an exhibition of fine woodworking at the Southern California Exhibition, now the San Diego Fair. Way back in 1981 founding member Lynn Rybarczyk put up a card table in front of The Cutting Edge, (a tool store specializing in fine hand tools and now out of business) and began signing up members. Eight months later 35 of the 170 members of this fledgling organization entered 100 pieces of fine woodworking in the 1982 First Annual Design in Wood Show at the Del Mar Fair. The show was a great success and was written up in issue #37, Nov/Dec 1982 of Fine Woodworking Magazine. The show has grown considerably over the years mostly due to the dedicated work of long time show coordinator, Bob Stevenson and his wife Janet. The Design In Wood show has an International reputation and has been recognized as the finest juried exhibition in the country by Fine Woodworking Magazine among others. We now have 19 different classes with over $22,000 in prize money and merchandise. We are constantly visited by other woodworking organizations and fair exhibitors trying to duplicate what we have here in their own states. There are many things that make our show unique and much of it is due to our dedicated volunteers and staff. In addition to the juried gallery show, which runs annually from mid-June to the 4th of July, many other activities take place. The 19th Century Cabinet Shop still makes 50 oak children’s chairs for charity during the day and there are demonstrations of 19th Century woodworking in the evening. continued on next page Dick Ugoretz, President SDFWA 2 We also have scroll saw, turning, model building and carving booths all manned by dedicated volunteers practicing their wares for the public. The Show is still a co-sponsored event between the 22nd District Agricultural Association and the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association. Bob Stevenson is retiring this year (along with his wife Janet) and we are losing a great resource. I will try my best to keep up the fine work that Bob has put in place but I will need help from you all. I will be calling for volunteer help in the coming months. It is the dedicated help from SDFWA and other organizations that has made this show the success it is. By working together we can keep making it a great show in the years to come. projects or shop by uploading pictures to the SDFWA Members Woodwork Photo Gallery – complete instructions are here: http://www.sdfwa.org/photo-gallery-instructions/ Jeff Bratt - SDFWA Webmaster [email protected] Notice of Elections I suspect many SDFWA members are like me, I didn’t pay much attention to officers and elections, but I think this year is especially important for the future of SDFWA. Our current president, Dick Ugoretz, is stepping down. We will be electing a new board. Thank you for your support Ed Gladney, Diw Coordinator The nominating committee is tasked with finding, selecting or otherwise persuading people to stand for election to the five offices on the board of directors. We will present a slate of nominees at the next General st Meeting Oct. 1 for: president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and past president member at large. Notes from the Webmaster What can we do to make the SDFWA website more useful, fun, or helpful for you? In time for the Fall Seminar, the online payment process for memberships and activities has been streamlined. If you look closely, we are constantly tweaking the site to add or rearrange things – like adding larger images in the most recent Design in Wood Photo Galleries. I also added a page describing the large number of books on woodworking and related subjects available in the San Diego Public Library. You’ll find it under Resources, SD Public Library. They have a great collection – before buying most of the woodworking books I own, I first checked them out from the library. Also, the website has the most up-to-date information for Wants and Disposals, and could have last-minute changes regarding SDFWA activities like Shop Tours – check before you go! Now, what can you do to contribute – to help make the website even better? It’s very easy, just write a paragraph about - or take some pictures - at the next SDFWA event you attend. This could be the Fall Seminar, A Shop tour, a General Meeting, anything. I can’t attend every SDFWA happening, and we welcome different perspectives on SDFWA activities. Don’t worry about writing perfectly; we’ll edit content for the website or newsletter. Send your articles or pictures to [email protected] or [email protected] . If you want to add or edit your entry in the SDFWA Craftsman list – email Ron Rossi at [email protected]. You can also show off your continued next column rd Then on the Annual Meeting on Dec. 3 there will be an opportunity for additional nominations from the floor, followed by the election of officers for 2015. Make sure to attend these meetings for the privilege of voting as well as the regularly planned events.
