F you’re on a bit of a Sticky Wicket, you are in a difficult or challenging situation! The weather conditions can play a huge part in the game. Clear blue skies and no wind often mean this is favourable to the batter. I Conversely, if there has been rain, humidity and low pressure, then this is more favourable to the bowler. Given the recent rain and overcast conditions it is possible the wicket will be truly Sticky which is consistent with the theme of this event! Sticky Wicket is a difficult situation and the families of children with special needs are quite literally on a bit of a sticky wicket. Origin: taken from Phrases.org A wicket is, of course, the playing surface used in cricket. This phrase is a direct allusion to the difficulty of playing on a wet and sticky pitch. For figurative usage of the phrase, we need look no further than the cricket playing countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. ...owing to the rain we have had in this island of Springs, I am batting on rather a sticky wicket. The first such citation we found is from an April 1930 edition of the Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner. "Your Excellency, Sir William Morrison and gentlemen. I am afraid tonight, owing to the rain we have had in this island of Springs, I am batting on rather a sticky wicket. We have just heard Sir William Morrison make, in my opinion, a magnificent speech. I do not hope or think of living up to that." The earliest citations of the expression refer specifically to cricket. For example, Bell's Life in London, July 1882 notes: "The ground... was suffering from the effects of recent rain, and once more the Australians found themselves on a sticky wicket." Networking In case you don’t know how to network, it is really simple. Go up to someone you don’t know, look into their eyes, say hi, be really engaged and interested in what they have to say, swap business cards and if you have connected with them professionally or personally, follow up after the event. Events such as Sticky Wicket are brilliant for meeting new people with whom you may end up doing new business, learning something or just enjoying their future company! 21 June 2012 The Sticky Wicket 3 Sticky Wicket 2012_Layout 1 14/06/2012 16:29 Page 4 THANK YOUS Many Thanks to our Teams and Sponsors LL of us at Sticky Wicket want to extend a warm and enthusiastic thank you to all of our sponsors.
