collecting, knitting, basket weaving,
ballet, competitive swimming, and
mining blocks.

Haley Edwards
Haley
was
chosen

represent the Junior class in
the 2012 Homecoming Court.
She is the daughter of Aubrey
and Jennie Edwards. She has an
older sister, Jenna, 18.
In high school, Haley has
participated basketball, softball,
FFA, and Pep Club.
In Haley’s free time she
likes to go horseback riding,
hang out with friends, and play
basketball.

When Haley found out she

shocked, but I am honored that
my class voted me to be on
Court.”
Justin Tanner
Justin was chosen to represent
the Junior Class in the 2012
Homecoming Court. He is the son
of Denise and Gary Tanner. He has
an older brother, Brandon, 20.
In high school, Justin has
participated in Pep Club, FCCLA,
basketball, baseball, football, golf,
Student Council, Beta Club and
FFA.
In Justin’s free time he likes to
play Xbox and hang out with his
friends.
Justin’s favorite thing about
Homecoming week is the lip syncs
and all the noon activities.
When Justin found out he was
selected to be a Homecoming
attendant, he said, “It is good, real
good.”
Maranda Chance
Maranda was chosen to
represent the Junior Class in the
2012 Homecoming Court. She is
the daughter of Marty and Kindra
Chance. She has a younger sister,
Tayler, 15.
In high school, Maranda has
participated in basketball, softball,
volleyball, FFA and Pep Club.
In Maranda’s free time she likes
to camp, go horseback riding, ride
four-wheelers, and hang out with
her friends.
Maranda’s favorite thing about
Homecoming week is dressing
up all crazy, lip syncs, and how
everyone gets so competitive.
When Maranda found out she
was selected to be a Homecoming
attendant, she said, “I was so happy
I had to sit on my hands to keep
from clapping!”

Austin was chosen by the
Sophomore class to be on this year’s
2013 Homecoming Court. Austin is
the son of Jerry and Trina Krelo.
Austin has one brother, Colten, 21.
Austin is involved in baseball,

Club. In Austin’s spare time, he
likes to hang out with his friends,
play baseball and other fun, active
things.

Courtney enjoys riding four
wheelers, playing sports, hanging
out with friends, and spending time
with her family.

Quinnton Bent
Quinnton was chosen by the
Sophomore class to be on this

Quinnton is the son of Kim and
Chris Bent. Quinnton has an older
brother, Dallas, 17 and a younger
sister; Addison, 9.
Quinnton has participated in
basketball, baseball, and Pep Club.
In Quinnton’s free time he likes to
play sports, play World of WarCraft,
and water polo.
Quinnton’s favorite thing about

Becky was chosen by the
Sophomore class to be on this
year’s 2013 Homecoming Court.
Becky is the daughter of Michael
and Mona Reeder. Becky has two
brothers, Randy, 15, and Ryan, 25.
Becky has been active in

exciting. I haven’t done many
things like this before so it should

Audra is the daughter of Brent
Bullock and Elizabeth Taylor. She
is the sister of Adrienne, 13, and
Aiden, 11.
In high school, Audra has
participated in FFA, Pep Club, Beta
Club, basketball, and softball.
In Audra’a free time, she
rides four-wheelers, paints, goes
horseback riding, and plays
basketball.
Audra said that although
she has never actually gotten to
experience Homecoming week, the
most interesting thing she has seen
are the lip syncs.
When asked how she felt about
being selected as a Homecoming
attendant, she said, “I feel lucky
and honored to be an attendant, and
to everyone that voted for me, it
really means a lot! I can’t wait to be
a part of this year’s Homecoming.”

Keeley, 17, is the daughter of
Shelia and Kelly Harper and the
sister of Kelsey, 20, and Kelbey, 13.
Keeley has participated in Beta
Club, HOSA, Student Council,
golf, basketball, Pep Club, dance,
and book club.
In her free time Keeley loves
to listen to music. She plays guitar
and sings. She can listen and search
for music for hours. She also loves
to read. Keeley said if coffee could
be a hobby it would be hers.
Keeley’s favorite thing about
Homecoming week is dressing up.
She loves that everyone is included
because it can be really easy to get
left out in high school.
Keeley is very honored to
serve as Mistress of Ceremonies in
this year’s Homecoming. Keeley
said, “I am stoked to the power of
ininity! It’s gonna be great.”
Dominick, 17, is the son of
Cindy Webb and Tom Tedeschi and
the brother of Morgan, 23, Sesley,
9, Ensley, 7, Annabeth, 7, and
Docker, 5.
Dominick has participated in
golf, basketball, baseball, Pep Club,
Spanish Club, Beta Club, HOSA,
Nursing, and Scholar Bowl.
In his free time, Dominick
enjoys a nice round of golf, being
lazy at home, and spending time
with his friends.

Mrs. Kaylee Adams
VHS has a new Special
Education Aide by the name of
Kaylee Adams. She is not only a
new Special Education Aide but,
also the new Assistant Volleyball
coach, as well.
Before becoming employed
here at VHS, Mrs. Adams was a
student here. Once her high school
career was over, she went to John
A. Logan and then SIUC.
Mrs. Adams grew up in Texas.
She moved to Vienna her junior
year in high school.
Mrs. Adams decided that
Mrs. Krista Huckelberry
she wanted to work here at VHS
because the school environment
has always been something she
enjoyed. She commented, “I have
always loved school, and I love
working with teens.”
As well as working with kids,
Mrs. Adams also enjoys a variety of
things such as volleyball, running,
and spending quality time with
family and friends. She also loves
to travel and is happily married to
her husband Austin.
Since Mrs. Adams has worked
here, she has many positive things
to say about VHS. She stated,
“VHS has the greatest student body
in Southern Illinois!”
Although Mrs. Adams says that
things were very different when she
went to school here herself, she still
very much enjoys her time working
here. She commented, “We are
very blessed to have the students,
teachers, and administration that we
do. VHS is a great place to work!”
Of all the things that Mrs.
Adams likes about VHS, the thing
she likes the most is getting to
know the student body.
VHS also has another new
Special Education Aide by the
name of Krista Huckelberry.
Before Mrs. Huckelberry was
a part of the VHS community,
she worked for Dr. Randy Oliver
at Family Physician’s Center and
went to SCC.
Mrs. Huckelberry grew up
here in Vienna, and went to VHS
as well. She eventually moved to
Metropolis where she currently
lives.
Mrs. Huckelberry decided
helping others was what she wanted
to do when her grandparents got
into an accident and she helped
them through their recovery.
Another big inspiration for her was
a very thorough nurse that Mrs.
Huckelberry once had. She stated,
“She gave food to fuel the ire of
who I was to be.”
Mrs. Huckelberry is married
with two children and has several
pets. These pets consist of three
dogs and cats, as well as two rabbits
and a ish.
Mrs. Huckelberry’s hobbies
include spending quality time with
family, being outdoors, poetry, and
writing.
So far, Mrs. Huckleberry thinks
that VHS has a good community.
She commented, “Everyone has
been so kind and welcoming to my
new position and the community
seems to be very supportive of all
students.”
Mrs. Huckelberry thinks getting
to know the special needs students
and helping them advance their
education is her favorite part about
VHS so far.
FFA members attend National Convention

The Vienna FFA Chapter took
10 members to the 85th Annual
FFA National Convention in
Indianapolis, Indiana. This event
took place the week of Oct. 21
through Oct. 27.
Nearly 55,000 FFA members
were in attendance from all
50 states and U.S. Territories.
The VHS Chapter attended the
Convention’s opening session on
Oct. 25 at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse
Convention Center. Scott Hamilton
was the keynote speaker.
On Oct. 26 the FFA members
traveled to Clinton, Indiana for
a tour of Elanco. Elanco has
built a legacy of science-based
products to improve the health
and production of animals for over
half a century.
On the 27th of October, the FFA
members attended the American
Degree Ceremony, where one of
our own previous FFA members,
Garrett Mattox, received his
American Degree at the Lucas Oil
Stadium.
Approximately 3,000 members
receive this award, which is less
than 1% of all members in FFA in
the United States. Garrett is only
the 4th person from Vienna High
School to be presented with this
award.
The convention was a huge
success. Senior Maria Hill was
very pleased with the turnout. She
said, “The convention was a lot of
fun. I met several people from all
across the U.S. The talent show
was really great, and the food was
amazing!”
The National FFA began in 1928
in Kansas City, Missouri and has
been rapidly expanding throughout
the years. FFA has over a million
members in all 50 states in the U.S.
Since its humble beginning, it
has been offering a bright future
to it’s members across the United
States and right here at VHS. The
FFA hopes to attend National
Convention for many years to
come.

VHS art students place second at Sidewalk Chalk Contest

On October 17th, VHS art
students attended the Sidewalk
Chalk contest. This event took
place at Harrisburg Middle School.
One of the VHS groups won
second place in the contest. This
group consisted of Jessica Buchan,
Erin Stambulski, David Santellano,
and Heather Court. They drew a
mural of Jack and Sally from The
Nightmare Before Christmas.
At the event, students chose
and designed a mural of chalk with
their selected teams. There were a
total of nine schools contending,
with 30 total teams.
The students could draw
a mural composition of their
choice. The murals ranged from
animals, cartoon characters, movie
characters, and whatever else that
could possibly come to mind.

thought it went well. She said, “All

Do yourself and your class
a favor and get involved.
Here’s how:
• Be at school! You can’t
support your class at home.
• Dress to impress!
Participate in the clothing
related contests every day.
Lay out your clothes the
night before to make sure
you’re ready!
• Help with lip-syncs! If
you’re already in lip-syncs,
great! If you aren’t, ask
your class sponsor if you can
help with anything. Lipsyncs take a lot of time and
effort, help out.
• Get into the Homecoming
Games! Don’t worry
(entirely) about winning,
just get out there and have
fun. Don’t sit on the stands
the entire time.
• Set an example! Even if
you’re not involved in an
activity, get up and cheer
for your class. Other people
will join you, especially if
you’re really into it.
and we all worked together really
well.” She also commented on the
best part of the contest. She stated,
“The best part is getting to see
what illustrations the other schools
presented to the competition.” Over
all Jessica thought it was really fun
and was glad to be a part of it.
But most of all Jessica is excited
for next year’s Sidewalk Chalk.
She commented, “I look forward to
next year’s competition and I really
hope that we can get more people to
participate in next year’s Sidewalk
Chalk event.”
Senior Maria Hill also
participated. She commented, “It
was a chance for me to get out of
school and create masterpieces
with chalk beside my amigos.”
VHS Art instructor, Mr. Palmer,
said that the contest went well. He
commented, “I hope that we can
compete again, and we do even
better next year.”

surprised, but thankful that I have
such a great class to give me this
opportunity.”
After high school, Iris plans on
going to Shawnee to get her RN
then to SIUE to get her doctorate’s
of pharmacy.

When Knikki was told she
was selected to be a Homecoming
candidate, she said, “I felt like a
mighty black stallion, frolicking
through the ields of the high
school, eating apples from the top
of the tree of social ladders, not the
bottom.”
After high school, Knikki plans
attending college at Murray State
University.
Knikki’s sponsor is Mrs. Palmer
Mrs. Reichert’s room to Mrs. WillHenn’s to tackle Stetson Fox. Mrs.
Will-Henn went to break it up, but
she sees it is Stetson and says, “Oh,
it’s just Stetson.”
When Carley found out she
was selected to be a Homecoming
candidate, she said, “My jaw just
dropped. I could not believe it.”
After high school, Carley plans
to go to a college that offers a good
sports program.
Carley’s sponsor is Mr. Palmer.

plans on going to Shawnee
Community College for two years,
then maybe Murrary State for
another two years.

VHS football makes history Physics class makes smashing return

For the irst time in VHS history,
the Vienna-Goreville football team
got all the way to the IHSA State
Playoffs.
“This is a great achievement for
this year’s team. It will deinitely be
hard to follow this season,” stated
Vienna-Goreville football coach
Mike Rude.
Since the V-G Eagles had an
overall record of 6-3, they were
eligible to go to the State Playoffs.
The V-G Eagles also hosted
their irst playoff game, beating
Sesser-Valier in the irst round of
the State playoffs.
In the second round of the
playoffs, the V-G Eagles faced the
number 1 seed Greenville. The
Eagles lost that game 42-2.

VHS senior, Andrew Trambley, was
nominated to the Black Diamond
Conference as a irst team player.
Fellow VHS senior, Wyatt
Miles, got an Honorable Mention
in the Black Diamond Conference.
Quarterback Christian Dahncke
tied with fellow VHS player,
Colten Krelo on a school record by
throwing two touchdown passes in
a single game.
“It is a great acomplishment
for me to be a co-record holder
with Colten Krelo,” said Christian
Dahncke.
Even though the V-G Eagles
didn’t make it very far in the
playoffs, it was still a great
achievement for the team.

This year, VHS science teacher
Mr. Gifin has returned to teaching
Physics for the irst time in nearly
half a decade, bringing fresh ideas
to the revitalized curriculum.
On a sunny October morning,
Mr. Gifin and the second-period
Physics class gathered ’round on
the front lawn of the school to
conduct an experiment.
The class was performing the
traditional egg-toss experiment,
but with a twist on the traditional
experiment format.
Instead of the egg being
dropped from a certain height, it
was launched in a trebuchet (which
is pretty much just a fancy catapult)
that was designed and built by VHS
physics student Shane Cowsert.
The purpose of the experiment
was for students to use critical
thinking and ingenuity to create
a container for an egg that would
keep it from being broken when
launched from the trebuchet.
To do this, the students formed
groups to design the container
and gather necessary materials.
After three days of designing
and building, Mr. Gifin brought
the physics class outside for the
ultimate test: the trebuchet.
“This was deinitely the most
fun I’ve ever had in a science
class!” commented physics student
Sammy Gray about the experiment.
In the end, all of the students
were successful, and no eggs were
broken upon impact.

Meet our 2012-2013 Eagles and Lady Eagles

The annual Meet the Eagles
event was a success yet again at
VHS this year. On November 11th,
all of the fall sport participants
were recognized. The sports that
were recognized were basketball,
cheerleaders, and the dancers.
To start off Meet the Eagles,
the Seniors ran through a tunnel
made of all the Freshman through
Junior sport participants. Ashton
Loyd sang “The National Anthem”
and following that, they recognized
the athletes.
After recognition was inished,
the dancers performed their routine
to a mixture of hip hop songs and
then the JV and Varsity basketball
teams scrimmaged. The boys JV
played irst, following them was the
JV girls, and after that the varsity
teams played. Each team played
very well.

another dance performed by the
dancers. Meet the Eagles had
another successful year, good luck
to all sports participants this year.

Lady Eagles take second in Marion tournament

The
Lady
Eagles
took
second in the Marion tournament
November 12-17. Other teams
in the tournament were Marion,
Benton, Carterville, and Herrin,
with Benton taking irst place.
In the Monday night game,
the Lady Eagles competed against
Marion and lost. Tuesday night
they faced Benton and had another
loss to overcome. The third night
the Lady Eagles were victorious
over Carterville. Saturday night
against Herrin the Ladies walked
away with another win.
An awards ceremony was
held after all games were inished
Saturday afternoon in which
Junior Maranda Chance and Senior
Carley Childress were named AllTourney team.
Senior Carley Childress was
happy with the team’s overall
performance. She said, “We got
off to a rocky start, but we pulled it
together and ended the tournament
in second, which is much better
than people expected of us.”

Basketball starts sinking the big shot

VHS Eagles started their
season by placing fifth in the
annual Turkey tournament.
Their first game ended in a
disappointing loss to Meridian.
The second game also ended
in a loss to Massac, with a
score of 77 to 44.
The third game was the
Eagles first win of the season,
with VHS 71, Carrier Mills 67.
The last three games ended
in losses as well. Century
defeated the Eagles with a
score of 66-42. The Eagles then
fell to Meridian with a final
score of 87-58. Eldorado was
their final foe. They defeated
the Eagles with a score of 8063.
The Tourney ended with
Meridian being the overall
winners.

Once upon a time, in a
little bitty town in a little bitty
world there was a little school
by the name of VHS.
In this little bitty school,
all the young students were
troubled and worried without
a doubt on a serious school
issue, leaving the kids in
distress.

a certain someone to get
the grand title and glory
of Homecoming King and
Queen.
Well, just for those troubled
minds who don’t know who to
pick, here are some suggestions
to help you find one that will
stick.
In any King or Queen , it is
important to make sure that
they are good at heart and
will completely fill the part.
Make sure they are not all
about popularity, but instead
have a mind of clarity.
It’s
not
all
about
appearance on the outside,
but about the pride they hold
inside.
So when considering the
choices of your King and
Queen, make sure you read
the lines in between.
Step One: Stop caring about what
other people think of you. I know
this is a bit of a mixed message, but
conidence is the hottest accessory
by far. Modesty is so yesterday.
Step Two: Dress nicely. Seriously,
people, if Homecoming Court has
to dress formally, then everybody
attending could at least have the
decency to wear a nice shirt and
jeans that are not practically falling
apart.

Vienna hosts Fall sports banquet

The fall sports banquet honored
golf, football, and volleyball
seasons.
Golf ended the season with
a record of 22-5. This is a new
school record for golf.
Football season ended Saturday
November 3rd. They also have
set a record, by making it to the
playoffs.
Volleyball had a very successful
ending with a impressive record of
11-19.
The event started off with the
volleyball coaches talking about
their season. Head Coach Tera
Hayes talked highly about the team
and how far they have come as a
team.
The next sport that was
recognized was golf. Mr. Palmer
was extremely proud of his team
this year. He said, “I’m going to
miss these four years I’ve spent with
these Seniors, going to matches,
riding in the meat wagon.”
The last on the agenda for the
night was football. The Freshman/
Sophomore coach Chris Schneider
talked about their team. The
Freshman team set their own record
themselves, with a record 6-3.
Head Coach Mike Rude talked
about the Varsity football team.
He talked about how far they have
come since they were Freshman,
winning only one game, to making
it to the State playoffs.
Coach Rude gave an inspiring
statement. He said, “I don’t know
if everyone realizes it, but all the
other teams in the Conference start
playing in 5th and 6th grade. We
are starting out as Freshman.”
Rude also said, “It takes a
special person to play, being out
there in the heat, and for some, not
even getting to play one minute in
a game.”
The football team had another
banquet just for football. They
gave out awards for All-Conference
players for the season. Also, they
went over some of the records and
showed how much the program has
grown.

Betas decorate pumpkins
for Autumn Ridge

This Halloween, the Beta Club
showed their creativity by painting
and carving pumpkins as a gift to
members of Autumn Ridge.
The Beta Club decided that, in
the spirit for Halloween, they would
paint and carve jack o’ lanterns
to give to the residents living at
Autumn Ridge. The students met
in Beta sponsor Mrs. Bradley’s
room and let their creativity low in
whatever way they chose.
Junior Courtney Cavitt was
one of the Beta members who
participated in the pumpkin carving
this year. She said, “I painted
a haunted house design with
spiderwebs on my pumpkin.”
Courtney was very happy about
participating in this activity. Not
only was she excited that she was
decorating her pumpkin as gifts for
members of her community, but she
also got the chance to have fun and
hang out with her friends as well.
Mrs. Bradley was very ecstatic
with how the pumpkin carving
went this year. She commented,
“Carving pumpkins is always one
of the favorite activities we do. The
Betas get to be creative and interact
with other members while doing
something fun.”
All of the Beta members had
a great time volunteering for the
pumpkin carving this year and
hope to continue doing it in years
to come.

On the 9th of October, VHS
students came out to save the lives
of others by giving blood. Many
students came out to show their
support.
A total of 54 students came to
donate, and give the red gift to all
around. “We had more irst time
donors than ever before, which
we are hoping will become donors
for life,” said Mrs. Reichert, blood
drive coordinator.

I Am the Difference brings
Halloween to Hillview

On October 31, some members
of the I Am the Difference club
passed out candy at the Hillview
nursing home. Their theme was
The Wizard of Oz.
Senior, Ashley Cooper, was
one of them. It was her irst time
helping out with the club I Am the
Difference and irst time helping
out at a nursing home. She really
enjoyed interacting with the
residents. “The little trick-ortreaters were all so cute in their
little costumes. I really enjoyed
myself and cannot wait to help out
again,” she said.
Junior, Emily Harris, dressed
up as a princess while passing out
cupcakes. “I really enjoyed seeing
the little kids’ faces light up when
receiving candy, as well as the
residents passing out the candy,”
she said.
Other members who helped in
this event were Juniors McKenzie
Mattox, Daniella Botello, and
Allison Byrd. “We all enjoyed
helping out the nursing home.
We are deintely looking forward
to seeing the residents again,”

Mrs. Bradley’s English IV class gets poetic

Students in Mrs. Bradley’s
English
IV
class
recently
participated in writing their own
poems based upon the Canterbury
Tales.
Students in the classroom
dressed up as the different
characters that their poems were
written about. The purpose behind
the assignment was to write a poem
about a religious person or a person
who was affected in some way by a
religious group.
Cheyenne Coonce, a senior who
participated in this assignment,
portrayed a Wise Man in her poem.
She chose to use this person for
her poem because a Wise Man
is a person who could easily be
associated with a religious person:
Jesus.
Her poem was about Mary. It
started off by explaining that hardly
anyone initially believed Mary
when she said that she was both
a virgin and pregnant. The poem

same time. It was good to see how

was really cool to see how other
students would do this assignment.”
“This is an assignment I have
done each year at VHS because it
is one that students learn from in a
way that is fun and creative,” said
English IV teacher, Mrs. Bradley.

has recently began the challenge of
running 5Ks. She has competed in
two 5Ks so far and plans to run in
many more.
The irst 5K she competed in,
Run for Hope for Eagle House,
was held on October 5th, at Vienna
City Park. She ran with fellow
VHS staff member, Mrs. Burnett
and both completed the race.
On October 20th, Mrs. Palmer
competed in her second 5K in
Marion, “Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer” at the Harry L.
Crisp Sports Complex.
Mrs.
Palmer was able to complete the
race, beating her time in her irst
race by ive minutes.
Mrs. Palmer relected on the
reasons she decided to begin
running, “I told myself this year
I was going to get healthy and in
shape so I started running with my
2nd hour itness class. Mrs. Burnett
and I decided to run the irst 5K
together and then I sort of enjoyed
it, believe it or not, that’s why I
ran the second one, and now I am
addicted.”
Last year itness class member,
Savannah Campbell, said that the
class is proud of her. “Mrs. Palmer
told us to never give up and she
has shown us that she won’t give
up either. We are so proud of her!”
Savannah stated.
Mrs. Burnett and Mrs. Palmer took on the challenge of running a 5K at the “Run for
Hope for Eagle House” 5K at the Vienna City Park.

VHS student prepares for the future

VHS student Markayla Johnson
attended the 2012 Summer Lead
America Medical Program at
DePaul University in Chicago,
Illinois.
Lead America is a summer
academic program with an
assortment of career choices.
During the program, students
stayed at the University. Lead
America has camps all around the
United States.
Markayla said, “I am very
interested in the medical ield and
I hope to become a doctor so this
opportunity caught my attention.’’
Unlike
many
teenagers,
Markayla has been preparing for
her career by taking college classes.
She also toured the University
of Illinois in hopes of one day
attending.
Markayla said, “I learned so
much at Lead America. We got to
solve an epidemic outbreak case,
learn how to take a patients medical
history, how the admission process
to college is, and a lot of other
things to do with medicine.”
Markayla added, “I deinitely
urge anyone who is even a little
bit into medicine to think about
going to this. It was personally
the best week of my life and it
totally changed how I feel about
medicine.”
Markayla is also planning to
attend the Lead America camp
again in the summer of 2013.

Foods and Nutrition, if we still had

Study hall, because it would be
helpful to the busy students who
work or are involved in extra
curricular activities.

How to wire a light switch. I have
no intention of being an electrician,
even though I was good at wiring.

ostrich, because they look like they

Since I’ve had 17 birthdays it’s
