Together with our partner movelo GmbH we have developed new itineraries for a successful e-bike fun holiday. We bring
together the love for nature, culture, cycling, wining and dining. Using the most environmental-friendly vehicle, a
touring coach, we will work together to take your guests to some of the most beautiful regions of Italy.
We only use the most up to date e-bike models, specifically designed for use by tourists and for the types of tours offered
by us. Our licensed guides are experts and will ensure that a full briefing on the operation and safe use of the bikes is
given before each tour.
E-biking stands for “soft mobility”. Your guests will cycle
effortlessly through the most scenic countryside, breathing in
fresh air and enjoying nature. The silent electric motor kicks in
seamlessly when it senses increased resistance, meaning hills
and uphill gradients can be negotiated with ease.

Florence (3 hours guide)
The art and cultural metropolis of Florence is
a must for all travellers to Tuscany. The cathedral of Florence dominates the cityscape and
together with the Campanile and the baptistery
forms one of the most magnificent works of art
that can be admired on this earth. The austerity and beauty of the city, the pride and the
constancy of the Florentines is manifested in a
unique way in the Palazzo Vecchio. You will visit the interesting sights of the historic district
on a certified city tour. Afterwards there will
be enough time to admire the jewellery shops
on the Ponte Vecchio or to enjoy an Italian espresso.
The Uffizi Gallery
The Gallery was commissioned in 1580 by Cosimo I de Medici and built by G. Vasari. It was
originally used as a government building. Today the Palazzo degli Uffizi houses a museum,
which is divided into three wings. Above all, the
big-name Tuscan artists like Giotto, Botticelli,
Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, but also
other famous Italians like Giovanni Bellini,
Caravaggio, Titian and Tintoretto as well as German and Dutch artists like Breughel, Cranach,
20

Dürer, Holbein, Rembrandt and Rubens are represented here by their works.
Boboli Gardens
In one of the prettiest Italian-style gardens,
nature and art lovers will find water features,
sculptures, artistically designed grottoes and
broad cypress avenues. The elevations in the
park offer lovely views of the city.
Gucci Museum in Florence
There is a new sight worth seeing in the historic
district of Florence: Gucci has presented its first
museum on the Piazza della Signoria in celebration of their 90th anniversary. On three floors
and 1,715 m2, all of the label’s products can
be seen: On the ground floor of the museum,
under the motto ‘Forever Now’, there is a café,
bookshop, souvenir shop and icon store. The
first floor features the flora world motif, rare
handbag models, evening collections, limited
items and contemporary installations. On the
second floor everything revolves around Logomania and the Lifestyle and Sport collections.
Fashion and art are combined in a simply splendid way in this museum

All our hotels are regularly inspected by our Contract Manager and his team. When checking the
hotels our experts use their many years of experience in accompanying groups. To select the hotels we focus on the following criteria: location, public transport links, hotel and room facilities,
catering and sales-potential.
Guided tour classical Venice (2 hours)
The guided city tour begins from the Doge’s Palace. On this tour we will discover the Venice of
the Venetians along narrow streets, a city which
is full of fascination even in its most hidden corners. Looking out from the Rialto Bridge, the
Canale Grande can be admired in its full glory.
Venice - Doge’s Palace (2 hours)
The magnificent Doge’s Palace was the erstwhile residence of the Doge. His private apartments were located here, as well as the seat of
the government of the Most Serene Republic
with its bureaus and the court with the state
prisons in the attic (piombi) and ground floor
(pozzi). Today the Doge’s Palace is a museum.
Here, next to the rather plain chambers where
Casanova stewed (and escaped), you can enjoy
the impressive pomp of the palace and feel the
erstwhile greatness of the Serenissima.
La Fenice theatre (2 hours)
Fenice is the Italian name for phoenix, that legendary bird, that is resurrected out of its ashes. And so it also happened with the opera
house, which was given its name, because the
previous building fell victim to a large fire in
1773. In 1792 the new house was inaugurated
and developed into one of the most import22
City Hotels Venice
ant stages in Europe. But the fire demon soon
struck again. In 1836 La Fenice again suffered heavy damages due to a fire. This time, however, the building was able to be made playable again in a fairly short timespan, so that its
excellent reputation could be preserved.
Lagoon Ride (half day)
On this boat tour of the Venetian lagoons we
will get to know the three most important islands. Torcello was the centre of the earliest
culture in the lagoons. The cathedral with its
magnificent mosaics and the 11th/12th century church of Santa Fosca are the last traces
of its past glory. Murano, on the other hand,
is world-famous for its glass industry. We will
have the opportunity to visit one of the glass
factories, where you can observe the glass blowers at work. We will get to see how beautiful
and valuable pieces of glass artwork are created out of a lump of molten glass. Finally, on
Burano, we will feel as if you had wandered into
another world, into a rural Venice of the 19th
century. Its pastel-coloured houses once drew
many artists. The residents are world famous
for their delicate lacemaking. The most intricate lace was made here in the 16th century.

The island of Ischia was already known at the time of the Greeks and later by Romans
for its thermal waters. Its several hot springs and the advantageous climate have
made the volcanic island a popular destination for treatments and spa vacations. The
sources are very rich in salt and the thermal water is slightly to strongly radioactive.

Dolomites
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: A Day in the Majestic Dolomites
The Dolomites: moon landscapes and
breathtaking views, World Heritage
Site since 2009. Through the wild Eggental we
will reach the romantic Lake Carezza, a sublime glimpse framed by the Latemar mountains.
Next, we will discover the set of several worldwide famous movies: the Rosengarten group,
with its unique pink walls. We will then continue
to Canazei, located in the suggestive Val di Fassa and starting point of a well-know path that
leads to Pordoi pass (here we can not miss a few
photo-stops!), ending in Ortisei. Here we will
take our time to breathe the purest air before
getting back to our hotel for dinner.
Day 3: A visit to Trento with a chance to
sample the local sparkling wine
Trento welcomes us with its rich historical heritage. The city was a hot spot during the Reformation, followed by the key Council of Trento.
After a guided tour, we will realize what makes
the local champagne (spumante) so special,
paying a visit to the renowed Cantina Ferrari. A
toast with this sparkling wine perfectly rounds
out our day!
Day 4: Experience beautiful Lake Garda and
it’s Mediterrean flair visit of a Lemon Grove
The highlight of the day will certainly
be the fascinating boat ride on the calm
waters of Lake Garda. We will ride to Limone, a
little town filled with gardens, olive groves and
citrus orchards, in which the tradition of the
cultivation of citrus fruits is continued. We will
have time for a cappuccino or an aperitif before
sailing to Malcesine: nestled between Lake Garda and Monte Baldo, this town is surrounded by
cypresses, olives and oleander trees. The imposing Scaliger Castle rises up above the roofs of
the historic district.

and orchards on the Wine Road in Südtirol. We

destination for windsurfing-addicted (optional:

·Lake Tenno the medieval village of Canale
and Carne Salada
·Literally “salt meat” is brined and seasoned
out of the best beef and is a particulary fine
speciality. It is served cooked or raw, cut into
paper-thin slices. The recipe originally came
from the area between the towns of Arco, Ten no, and Varone. From there it established it self throughout all of Trentino. Carne salada
was already known in the 18th century - it
was the normal practice to brine beef as a
provision for the long winter and the follow ing spring.

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Verona and Lake Garda with stop
in Sirmione
After Venice, Verona is the most important art
city in Veneto and the second largest settlement in Italy. We will be amazed by the magnificent Roman amphitheater in Piazza Brà, right
next to Via Mazzini, our chance to do a little
shopping surrounded by history, art and modern life of the City of “Romeo & Juliet”. Driving back to the Lake shores, we will stop in
Sirmione. This romantic, little town, offers an
enjoyable stroll through its narrow streets or
a visit to the Grottoes of Catullo, ruins of a 1st
century Roman Villa.
Day 3: Mantua and the Sigurtà Park
Today’s destination is Mantua, a lively
centre of art. The cathedral, the Palazzo Ducale and the Palazzo del Te (admission extra)are especially worth seeing. After a guided
tour, we will have free time to explore the historical centre on our own. We will then continue
to Parco Giardino Sigurtà, a over 50-ha-large
area, numbered among the world’s most beautiful parks. We may live this idyllic atmosphere
by an extended walk or with the silent support
of an electric car.
Day 4: Venice by boat
Welcome to Venice. Today’s excursion
brings us to the astonishing lagoon city.
We will discover the secrets of its incredible ar32

chitecture, the splendour of the Doge’s Palace
and the majestic St. Mark’s Square. Away from
the tourist tracks, we will unveil its most hidden corners and admire the city in its full glory
from the Grand Canal.
Optional: Discover Venice’s most important
Islands. Torcello was the centre of the earliest culture in the lagoon. Murano on the other
hand is world-famous for its glass industry: we
will have the opportunity to visit one of the
glass factories. Finally on Burano we will feel
as if we had wandered into another world, back
to the rural Venice of the 19th century. Its pastel-coloured houses once drew many artists.
Day 5: Bergamo and Lake Iseo
Bergamo’s attraction lies mainly in its upper
city, which is surrounded by venetians walls.
We will reach it by funicular and walk to the
Piazza Vecchia, where the cathedral, the baptistery, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore
with the Colleoni Chapel and the Palazzo della Ragione create a unique ensemble. We will
take a stroll through the main borough of the
upper city, with its several places of interest.
On the way back we look forward to Lake Iseo,
one of the most beautiful lakes at the foot of
the Alps. Strolling through the labyrinth-like
streets, we will taste the middle-aged flavour
of Iseo old town.

a pilgrimage destination and house to several sites of interest. The shrine of Madonna della Ceriola rises on the top of a hill and offers a
lovely view of the surroundings to those who
earned it by walking up there. Through a refreshing boat ride you may appreciate an unforgettable little gem.

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Borromean Islands and Stresa
During this excursion we will admire blossoming gardens, magnificent buildings, elegant villas and subtropical
vegetation. We will reach the famous Borromean Islands by private boat: Isola Bella impresses with its sumptuous Baroque palace and
a stunning garden with plants and flowers of
various origins. A picturesque fishing village
with original dwellings is located on Isola dei
Pescatori. Afterwards we will have time to stroll
through the famous health resort of Stresa with
its elegant promenades and picturesque historic district.
Day 3: Day at leisure or optional Lake Orta
and Island of San Giulio
Lake Orta, the smallest pre-Alpine lake, is our
special destination for today. The picturesque
hilly landscape, in which small villages are embedded, radiates peace and quiet and enchants
with its Mediterranean flair. In the village of
Orta, located on the shores of the lake, we will
wind across the old market square and through
the narrow, medieval alleyways and along the
way we will see romantic, secluded gardens.
We will reach the island of San Giulio by boat,
where the oldest church of this region rises.
Precious, Renaissance frescoes, dye the walls of
this little gem, giving it the typical sacred vibe.

Michelangelo insider tip
Villa Carlotta was a wedding gift to the Prussian Princess Charlotte upon her wedding to George, Crown Prince of Saxe-Meiningen. The magnificent gardens and thier exotic vegetation
alone, transformed in April and May into one
big sea of flowers when the azalea and rhododendron are in bloom, make a visit worthwhile.
Inside the villa you can view the festive marble
salon with paintings and sculptures.

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Langhe and Alba with La Morra and
Barolo
Today we discover one of the world’s most famous wine growing regions, the Langhe. During the excursion we will see numerous castles and palaces reigning high atop the hills and
the hills themselves are planted all over with
grapevines. Alba, the city of the white truffle, is located at the northern border of this enchanting landscape. We will visit the historical centre, the city hall and the cathedral. The
next stop is la Morra, which offers a breathtaking view of this picturesque vineyard, then the
tour will continue to Barolo, birthplace of the
top wine of the same name. With such surroundings, a stop at a winery to taste the excellent
wines of the region is essential.
Day 3: Turin
On the city tour of Turin we will see the Palazzo
Reale, Palazzo Madama, San Lorenzo and gain a
first impression of the magnificence of this city.
Afterwards we will have time to wander in the
Baroque historic district. Taking a nice walk is
38
Piedmont
no problem in Turin, since the kilometre-long
arcades allow a relaxed stroll even when it is
raining. The Mole Antonelliana, once a Jewish
synagogue and today the Italian film museum
is particularly worth a visit.
Day 3: Asti Canelli
Our trip today starts in Asti. A stroll through the historic district is enough to
feel the magic of this place. The medieval character of the city is the reason why it is known as
the ‘San Gimignano of Piedmont’. It is the centre of the wine growing region of Monferrato,
where the gentile Moscato and Barbera d’Asti
are grown. The next stop is the small town of
Canelli. Many tradition-filled wineries, also called underground cathedrals, are located here,
which are to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit one of these cellars and
we will inebriate the various distillates during
a grappa tasting.
Day 5: Departure
Extension programme to Liguria on request.
Michelangelo insider tip
A half day truffle hunt
A unique experience that it is worth to remember and to tell. A place where you can share
the knowledge of local history and traditions,
and of the typical products offered by the region. The owners give explanations about the
local traditions and the environment followed by an overview of typical products: wines,
cheeses and, of course, truffles varieties. Afterwards they provide a guided tour to the natural truffles grounds, a chance to experience a
real "truffle picking" along a scenic trail with
rest areas. A truffle tasting with local fine wines
ends out the day. Visit length: 2 hours
(Please note that customers are recommended
wear proper clothes and shoes for walking in
the woods)

San Remo
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Sanremo and Ligurian hinterland
Sumptuous parks, palm-lined promenades and
elegant shopping streets characterize Sanremo the main city on the Flower Riviera, which is
famous for its casino and its incredibly healthy
climate. Leaving the city behind, we head into
the peaceful Ligurian hinterland. Olive groves
and vineyards are dotted with small towns like
the medieval Dolceacqua, where we will make
our stop. Stairways, narrow streets and hidden
corners lead to the seat of the Doria family, the
castle complex high above the town. Artists and
artisans enliven the overall appearance of the
town. Liguria’s best Rossese, a typical regional
wine, grows in the vineyards before the gates
of the town. An olive oil tasting can be enjoyed here to.
Day 3: Nice and Cannes
We begin our day with a guided tour of Nice. We
will pay a visit to the historic Hotel Negresco,
symbol of the glorious splendour of the city.
We continue to Cannes, location of the famous
Film Festival. We can soak up the sophisticated
atmosphere of the centre with personalities of
all kind from all over the world.

Liguria · French Riviera
Day 4: Genoa
Today we will find out how Genoa’s fame is based not only on its harbour, but also on the palaces and museums, in which lie priceless treasures and works of art. ‘Genoa is indescribably
beautiful, magnificent and distinctive’, the
composer Richard Wagner once wrote about
the city. The luxury and deeds of the proud city
come alive again in Porto Antico, where the
life in the labyrinth-like streets of the historic
district pulses between the old city walls. Optional visit to the aquarium.
Day 5: Menton and the Principality of Monaco
Today we will drive along the Franco-Italian border headed to Menton, “La perle de la
France”, right on the coast with a backdrop of
mountains. We will enjoy this wonderful view
before getting to the lavish Principality of Monaco. Built atop a rock peak above the sea,
and dominated by the Prince’s Palace and the
cathedral, the city offers several sights: with an
additional fee we may visit the Exotic Garden,
the Museum of Oceanography or the Casino. But
the true experience of the day will be our visit
to a perfumery to smell the true scent of luxury.

Cinque Terre
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Camogli, Abtei San Fruttuoso,
Portofino und Santa Margherita
Our discover of the Gulf of Poets begins
with the pretty fishing town of Camogli.
From far, we can see the colourful houses that
front the harbor lights. One of the most beautiful corners of Italy, edged into the Bay of Capodimonte, opens in front of our eyes: a small fishing village next to the San Fruttuoso Abbey
and the Tower of the Doria. Next comes another highlight: the worldwide famous Portofino, with its luxurious yachts surrounded by
picturesque fishing boats. We will enjoy a walk
in this elegant town before reaching the seductive Santa Margherita, our final destination.
Day 3: Cinque Terre
Today we will explore one
of the most picturesque
natural park in Italy: the Cinque Terre. After a
train ride from Levanto, our sightseeing begins
in Riomaggiore, a unique, multi-coloured town
castled on the cliffs. Continuing our intriguing
trip we reach Manarola and Monterosso, the western most of the Cinque Terre. We will here experience the inebriating lemon tree scent and
we have the chance to taste a glass of the finest
local white wine.
Day 4: Sestri Levante, Basilica dei Fiaschi
and Pesto cooking class
We will begin the day with a pleasant stroll
around the beautiful centre of Sestri Levante,
a charming fishing village located along a
picturesque peninsular. Here we will have our
cooking class, where we will learn how to make
the authentic Ligurian Pesto, using the local ingredients: basil, olive oil, pine nuts and pecorino, all mixed together in a traditional marble
mortar and pestle. At the end of the lesson we
will sample the locally produced pesto which
will flavour a good pasta dish, accompanied by
a glass of white wine, while our own creation
will be bottled up for us as a souvenir of our day,
a memory of the wonderful aromas of Liguria.
In the afternoon we will visit the Basilica dei Fieschi, which sits in glorious isolation amongst
the vineyards. Here we will travel back into the
Middle Ages as the building is an excellent example of Romano Gothic architecture.
Day 5: Genoa „the secret heart of Genoa“
Today we are going to discover Genoa from a
different perspective, as we visit the famous
“Caruggi”, the narrow streets of Genoa’s Old
Town, and discover the hidden “beating heart”
of this historic city. To conclude the tour, we
will visit a local shop where we will sample some
of the tasty local delights.

Michelangelo insider tip
Pesto alla Genovese
The by far most famous Ligurian specialty is the
deliciously zesty „pesto genovese“, which was
created centuries ago in Genoa. Pesto was above all very important for sailors. The name “pesto” is derived from “pestare” (to pound), as
the ingredients are pounded in a stone mortar
with a wooden pestle. Each Ligurian home has
its own secret pesto recipe, but they all agree
on one thing: the basil and olive oil must come
from Liguria.

Venice
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Venice by boat
Welcome to Venice. Today’s excursion
brings us to the astonishing lagoon city.
We will discover the secrets of its incredible architecture, the splendor of the Doge’s Palace
and the majestic St. Mark’s Square. Away from
the tourist tracks, we will unveil its most hidden corners and admire the city in its full glory
from the Grand Canal.
Day 3: Trieste and Miramare Castle
In Trieste we will breathe in the cosmopolitan
flair in the streets of the city centre, in which
neoclassical and elegant art nouveau buildings
stand side by side. We will begin our tour at Piazza dell’Unità, the city centre, that was formed
on the earthen mounds of the Roman harbour,
and continues onto the San Gisuto hill, where
the monuments of the antique city are located.
Next, we will enjoy free time to wander through
the city before the tour continues on to Miramare Castle. This fortress was built on a rocky cliff
between 1860-1865 by the Austrian Habsburg
Archduke Maximilian. The castle park is filled
with rare and precious trees, we will visit the
small swan’s lake, lotus pond and the castelletto (a small, somewhat secluded castle) and
enjoy the marvelous flora.
Day 4: Udine and San Daniele ham
Today we leave our hotel heading Udine. Remnants of the almost 400 years of Venetian rule
are still present today. The ‘Piazza della Libertà’
with its unique architectural ambience, is also
influenced by its proximity to Slovenia. We will
visit the interesting sights of Udine with our
tour guide, including the impressive cathedral.
Afterwards we will have free time, before the
tour continues on to San Daniele. We will familiarize ourself with the production of this delicacy during a visit to a ham factory. A tasting
is, of course, also included.
Day 5: Treviso and Prosecco Wine Road
We will first visit the pretty little city of Treviso with its branched waterways. The city walls,
which the Venetians built in the 16th century,
are to a large extent still preserved. The meeting point is Piazza dei Signori with its impressive palaces. We will see the San Pietro Cathedral and the San Nicolò Church, which is of historical importance as one of the most impressive examples of Italian red brick Gothic. Then
we will drive along the Prosecco Wine Road,
which begins in Conegliano and follows the
gentle hills bedecked with lush vineyards through the areas of Foletto, the Piave and Valdobbiadene. During a visit to a local winery we will
learn exactly how Prosecco wine is produced.

Ferrara
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Modena, Balsamico
and Ferrari in Maranello
Modena is mostly known for being the
house to Ferrari and Maserati, but our
tour will also make us discover the less-known
beauty of its ancient city centre. The Piazza Grande with the cathedral, the Ghirlandina bell tower has been named UNESCO World
Heritage Sites. After the guided visit, we head
to a traditional balsamic vinegar cellar, where
we will learn the production techniques which
guarantee the good quality of the vinegar. Our
next stop is Maranello, in other words Ferrari.
Ever since Enzo Ferrari decided in 1942 to start
producing his motor car brand in Maranello, the
entire area has literally “breathed” the red of
this “stallion”. We will visit the Ferrari Gallery: photo exhibition, historical rarities and antique cars will tell us the legendary history of
this horse that stands on its rear legs.
Day 3: Ravenna e Ferrara
The former capital of the Western Roman
Empire is one of the cities most worth visiting in Italy and is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site. Ravenna is famous for its huge mosaic de46

corations, we will also see the most important
architectural monuments from the Gothic and
Byzantine eras, including the S. Vitale Basilica,
the Galla Placidia Mausoleum with its splendid
mosaics and the mausoleum of the Ostrogoth
king Theodoric. The we continue on to Ferrara:
in every corner we will discover the character of
a magnificent Renaissance capital. The historic
district, surrounded by a 9-kilometre-long city
wall, can only be visited on foot or by bicycle.
We will visit the cathedral, the basilica, and the
medieval historic district on our guided tour.
Day 4: Bologna and Dozza
Bologna has one of the most beautiful
and best preserved historic districts in
Europe with many towers from the Middle Ages
and ca. 40 km of arcades. We will learn how it
houses the most ancient university in Europe,
we will wonder how can the ‘Garisenda” tower
still stand and try to spot the seven churches
in St. Stephen square. In the afternoon we will
visit the medieval village of Dozza, to discover
the castle and the typical decorated houses of
the centre. A wine tasting of the local red wine
rounds out of our day.

Florence
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Florence
Today’s excursion brings us to a must
for all travelers: the artistic and cultural metropolis of Florence. The cathedral dominates the cityscape and together with the
Campanile and the baptistery forms one of the
most magnificent works of art that can be admired on planet earth. The austerity and beauty of the city, the pride and the constancy of
the Florentines is manifested in a unique way
in the Palazzo Vecchio. After visiting all these
masterpieces, there will be enough time to admire the jewelry shops on the Ponte Vecchio or
to enjoy an Italian espresso.
Day 3: Volterra with alabaster-workshop
and San Gimignano
Today’s first highlight is San Gimignano: the family towers can be seen from far away. Each family kept trying to surpass the others with ever
higher towers and these impressive structures
stand testimony to this competition to this day.
The medieval structures of this city have largely remained intact and San Gimignano, with
its large number of art treasures, can truly be
characterized as an open-air museum. We continue on to the alabaster city of Volterra. This
former Etruscan settlement is located on a rise
with a splendid view of the surroundings. Upon
request, an alabaster workshop can be visited.
48
Tuscany flair with fishing villages
Day 4: Lucca and Pisa
Two fascinating Tuscan cities are on our day’s
agenda: first, Pisa, an antique, former sea republic. We will visit the impressive cathedral, the
baptistery and, of course, we will have a peak of
the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa (admission extra). Then we continue on to Lucca, whose medieval city walls are still well-preserved.
Also known as the city of 100 churches, the city
is the birthplace of Puccini and harbours many
interesting sights, including the San Marino
Cathedral. With the tour we will get to know the
impressive monuments of this city, which is also
known as the open-air museum of Tuscany.
Day 5: Siena and the Chianti Valley
with wine-tasting
Once in Siena, the tour guide will take
us on a tour of this important art city.
The highlight is the Piazza del Campo, the seashell-shaped square, on which the famous horserace the ‘Palio’ takes place each year. In the
afternoon, the excursion will continue into the
Chianti Valley. This hilly landscape, interspersed with olive groves, cypresses, vineyards and
palaces, fascinates all visitors. We will experience the harmony of the colours, that only
the hills in this region have to offer, with your
own eyes. A wine tasting with snack rounds out
the excursion.

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Umbria’s mountain villages
The f irst stop of today’s excursion is the
picturesquely situated mountain town of Spello, which we will discover during a relaxing
stroll. The Roman gates and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, adorned with frescoes,
are worth seeing. Then we will continue on to
Montefalco. This town rules over the area like
a falcon from his aerie and is considered the
‘Balcony of Umbria’ due to its splendid vista.
A walk through the historic centre of Bevagna
rounds out the excursion. There a visit to an oil
will be arranged.
Day 3: Montepulciano, Bagno Vignoni and pecorino-cheese tasting near Pienza
All lovers of the Renaissance have heard of
Pienza. Pope Pius II wanted to transform his
birthplace into a model city of the Renaissance,
a goal which he only partially reached with the
construction of the cathedral, papal palace and
city hall within three years. In the afternoon we
will reach Montepulciano, where the hearts of
all wine connoisseurs beat faster, as here the
famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is grown.
The ancient village of Bagno Vignoni is located
in the heart of Tuscany, in the Val d'Orcia Natural Park. At the heart of the village is the
"Square of sources", namely a rectangular
tank, which contains the original source of water that comes from the subterranean aquifer
of volcanic origins. After a walk we will reach
52
Tuscany · Umbria
a cheese-factory to taste an Italian specialty:
the famous pecorino cheese.
Day 4: Perugia and Assisi
Perugia’s centre has hardly changed since the Middle Ages. The houses tower up
and can be seen from a distance like a crown on
the crest of a hill. It hosts a treasure trove of sights from all eras, which we will discover during
an exciting city tour with a local guide. We continue on to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis,
where we will be enchanted by the art and spirituality of this place. We will visit the lower basilica of San Francis, with the excellent fresco cycle by Giotto, the city square and the churches
of St. Clara and St. Ruffino.
Day 5: Siena and Chianti Valley
In Siena, the tour guide will take us on
a tour of this important art city. The
highlight is the Piazza del Campo, the seashell-shaped square, on which the famous horserace the ‘Palio’ takes place each year. The imposing cathedral embodies a first-class sight. In
the afternoon, the excursion will continue into
the Chianti Valley. This hilly landscape, interspersed with olive groves, cypresses, vineyards
and palaces, fascinates all visitors. We will experience the harmony of the colours, that only
the hills in this region have to offer, with our
own eyes. A wine tasting with snack rounds out
the excursion.

Amalfi
Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Pompeii and Vesuvius
Today we will visit Pompeii, the city destroyed in antiquity by the devastating
eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The size of the ruins
set amidst an idyllic landscape, convey a lovely
impression of what the city must have looked
like during the period of the Roman Empire. During the tour we will admire the forum and the
temples of Zeus and Apollo, the antique shops
and the brothel, full of erotic paintings. In the
afternoon we will turn our attention to Mt. Vesuvius: a walk of ca. 20 minutes from the coach
park to the crater (optional admission) along a
rewarding path offers a one-of-a-kind view of
the giant crater and the surrounding landscape.
Day 3: Capri
The island of Capri is one of the
world’s most famous tourist destinations due to its natural beauty. During the
day the light bathes the island in a wide range
of colours and enchants its visitors. A boat ride
brings us to Marina Grande. Afterwards we will
move to the centre of Capri for a walking tour
through the historic district to the famous Gardens of Augustus with a local guide. From here
we will enjoy a splendid view over the Faraglioni cliffs. We now found ourselves in Anacapri:
54
Sorrento · Amafi Coast
above all known for the villa of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe and the church of San Michele,
whose majolica floor is considered an art-historical treasure.
Day 4: Amalfi Coast with a local bus
We will ride along one of the world’s most beautiful costal roads.
It winds along the steep rock faces over Positano to Amalfi and provides beautiful views of the
deep blue sea. Amalfi is so narrow and steep
that the little alleyways of the town consist of
stairways. Among the main attractions are the
“paradise cloister”. On the way enjoy a limoncello tasting, a liquor made from odour-intensive lemon peels.
Day 5: Half-day Sorrento with tasting on
a farm
Besides the Cathedral (Santi Filippo e Giacomo
Cathedral), from the 14th century with façade
reconstructed in 1924 and the Monastery of
St. Francesco, Sorrento offers one of the most
radiant and relaxing atmosphere we may ever
find. We will enjoy our time at leisure in the white streets of the town before reaching the lovely
farms that invites us to a genuine tasting of typical, local products.

Island Ischia
Drive to Pozzuoli and boat ride to Ischia. During
an island tour you will get to know the island’s
prettiest sights. The small, romantic village of
Sant’Angelo with its pastel-coloured houses
and colourful boats has retained the charisma
of a fishing village. The mild climate and the
warmth of the bubbling springs and steaming fumaroles have therapeutic effects. Waterfalls, splashing fountains, numerous grottoes
and flower-filled parks create a fitting setting
for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

which resulted in its total destruction. In the
afternoon we will reach Pompeii, the city destroyed in antiquity by the devastating eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The size of the ruins set
amidst an idyllic landscape convey a lovely impression of what the city must have looked like
during the period of the Roman Empire. During
the tour we can admire the forum and the tem-

ples of Zeus and Apollo, the antique shops and
the brothel, full of erotic paintings.
Day 5: Capri
The island of Capri is one of the world’s
most famous tourist destinations due
to its natural beauty. During the day the light
bathes the island in a wide range of colours and
enchants its visitors. A boat ride brings us to
Marina Grande. Afterwards we will move to the
centre of Capri for a walking tour through the
historic district to the famous Gardens of Augustus with a local guide. From here we will enjoy a
splendid view over the Faraglioni cliffs. We now
found ourselves in Anacapri: above all known
for the villa of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe
and the church of San Michele, whose majolica
floor is considered an art-historical treasure.
Day 6: Amalfi Coast
We will ride along one of the world’s most beautiful costal roads.
It winds along the steep rock faces over Positano to Amalfi and provides beautiful views of the
deep blue sea. Amalfi is so narrow and steep
that the little alleyways of the town consist of
stairways. Among the main attractions are the
“paradise cloister”. On the way enjoy a limoncello tasting, a liquer made from odour-intensive lemon peels.
Day 7: Naples and Vesuvius
The capital of Campania is an experience of a unique nature. Naples is a city
of exuberant vitality at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, embedded in a spectacular landscape with
a view of the islands, which rise up like sculptures in the Gulf of Naples. It combines a cultural-historical and history-charged past with
pure passion for modern life. During a guided
city tour we will see the most important sights
like the Castel Nuovo, Palazzo Reale and much
more. In the afternoon we will turn our attention to Mt. Vesuvius. You will walk ca. 20 minutes from the coach park to the crater (admission) along a rewarding path offering a one-ofa-kind view of the giant crater and the surrounding landscape.

Day 2: Tour of the Gargano with Monte
Sant’Angelo and the Umbra Forest
(approx. 160 km)
We will spend our day on a tour of Gargano: we
will first reach Vieste, named the queen of the
Gargano. Here we have the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque historic district and the impressive view of the cliff coast. Then the tour
continues along the southern coast to the St.
Michael’s shrine on Monte Sant’Angelo, one of
Europe’s oldest pilgrimage destinations. We will
visit the grotto shrine, the ‘Tomba dei Rotari’
and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. On the
road we will meet ‘Foresta Umbra’, a national
park that offers visitors interesting insight into
the life of various different wild animals.
Day 3: Day at leisure
Enjoy a walk along the sandy sea shore
or explore Vieste on your own.
Day 4: Castel del Monte, Trani
(approx. 300 km) - change of hotel
Today we will take an excursion to Italy’s most magnificent Hohenstaufen
castle, Castel del Monte. Already visible from
a distance, this imposing stone crown of Apulia thrones atop a hill. It remains unclear to
this day why Frederick II had this building
constructed. Only one thing is sure: The sight
of Castel del Monte is simply breathtaking. We
then continue to Trani and visit the so-called
‘queen of cathedrals’ located directly on the
sea, as well as the Castle of Trani (outside viewing only), which was also built by the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II.
Day 5: Castellana Grottoes- Ostuni Alberobello/Trulli (approx. 110 km)
The Grottoes of Castellana are an expansive
system of natural, underground passageways
and chambers that was discovered in 1938 and
since then has been researched by numerous international groups of cave experts. We will take
a journey into this dark limestone world before
58
Tour of Apulia
reaching the lightening Ostuni: the white city
of Apulia. A picturesque labyrinth of alleys and
stairs surrounded by centuries-old olive groves.
Our next stop is the unique Alberobello with its
Trulli, round shepherds houses made out of dry
masonry walls, with black ical roofs. They rise
on beautiful cobblestone streets where we will
take a stroll and enjoy the bucolic atmosphere.
Day 6: Lecce and Otranto (approx. 280 km)
Lecce is known as the pearl of the Apulian Baroque: the striking buildings and the indisputable beauty of its churches make the city the Florence of the south. We will visit the Piazza Oronzo, which forms the heart of the city, and see
the remains of the Roman amphitheatre. A visit to Otranto is like diving into the history of
the Mediterranean: here we will admire the terrace gardens, called ‘Eden’ by the Turks, and
read the origin myth in the colour mosaics of
the cathedral. The Turkish invasion in 1480 ended in a bloodbath, which bears witness to the
heroic fortitude of the town’s residents, who
would not repudiate their Christian faith. The
mortal remains of the 800 martyrs are located
in the apses of the cathedral.
Day 7: Matera and Altamura
The sight of the so-called ‘Sassi’ of Matera is astonishing. They are caves hewn
into the blank rock, that were built as relatively
comfortable dwellings in ancient times - and
served as housing until after World War II. A
whipped cream topping of houses, monasteries and churches, shining in pastel hues in
the mild light, thrones atop a singular massif. But Matera has even more to offer: Dozens
of cave churches belong to the excellent grotto treasures of Matera. No wonder, that Matera is today a World Heritage Site and has fascinated visitors for many years with its history
and unique townscape. In Altamura we will discover the fascinating S. Assunta Cathedral and
the tradition of of the Altamura bread, which is
still cooked in traditional wood ovens.

to a standstill? An enchanting labyrinth of medieval alleys surround Piazza del Campo, one of
the most beautiful squares of Italy. Just outside
Siena, high amongst the vineyards, we find Villa Geggiano. Together with its Garden it forms
an unusual combination of history and scenery: the Garden Theater with terrace and layered
ponds is particularly impressive.

A devasting fire is the reason why the La Fenice Opera House was originally built - and
a devastating fire almost destroyed the Opera House many years later. Fire therefore
plays an important role in the history of La Fenice, a theatre that is as inconspicuous
from the outside as it is magnifient on the inside.
The first decisive fire broke out in 1773 and destroyed the major Opera House. A little
later, the architect Gian Antonio Selva planned to build the new Opera House, which
opened 16th May 1792. As it owed its origin to a fire, it was unceremoniously called
"La Fenice" (The Phoenix - a symbol of rebirth and resurrection).
At the time of going to press the opera-programme for 2017 in La Fenice Opera House had
not been finalized.

La Scala Opera House
La Scala Opera House was built in 1778 on the site of the Church of Santa Maria alla
Scala, which gave its name to the theatre. The architect was Giuseppe Piermarini.
A visit to La Scala is the dream of all opera fans. Unfortunately it is very difficult to get
tickets for an opera there. Michelangelo can, however, assist with the organization of
opera tours and get tickets easily.
At the time of going to press the opera-programme for 2016-2017 in La Scala Opera House
had not been finalized!
