Live Long and Prosper
I
t is New Year’s Eve as I write this, so the above is an appropriate sentiment but it
is also the title of an article I read recently that also said “It is absolutely possible
to get better with age. Just listen to the experts – and some spry centenarians.”
While these may not be “out of the mouth of babes” they are worth reading: “People
interest me – that’s why I go out every day and mingle. I remain curious about life and
if something new happens I want to be involved in it.” “Learning new things makes
you happy and keeps your mind active.” “I take a drink of Scotch every day. And I feel
great afterward.” “I do a lot of good deeds, so maybe that’s helped.” “How I made it to
100: I participate in lots of activities. I play bingo, do meditation, crafts, and attend
fitness classes like Zumba Gold for seniors and chair yoga.” “Sleep well, try not to
worry, and enjoy good dreams.”
The staff at Desmond is grateful to work in an atmosphere that people enjoy and
appreciate. Someone called this an oasis. Friendships have formed here. In one of our
classes some people chipped in on the next session’s class fee for a classmate they were
fond of and they wanted to be sure that person could attend. We see thoughtfulness
and hear laughter every day at Desmond Campus. Thank you, Mrs. Desmond!
As always, we hope that you see many classes that will interest you. We take feedback
seriously and look forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much for attending
classes at Mount Saint Mary College Desmond Campus!

Introduction to Microsoft Access Database Boot Camp
Applications requiring storage and maintenance of large amounts of data in an organized manner
can be set up as Access databases, e.g. customers and invoices, inventory, and suppliers. Data in databases is organized by topic and each topic is stored in a table. These tables are then organized into
relationships such as employee names and payroll data. With tables established, the power of the
database comes alive as the user can now formulate queries, forms, and reports to analyze the data
and produce useful information to guide decision-making for the organization.
Monday, April 7
9 am-3 pm (bring lunch) Dr. V. Kayes
Fee: $40
Intermediate Microsoft Access Database Boot Camp
Queries and forms are objects based on tables and are created to extract, view, and maintain data.
Forms provide a more user-friendly interface for entering, editing, deleting, and viewing records in
tables. Reports are generated to provide professionally designed printouts of information from tables
or queries. This second course expands on the brief intro from course 1, to creating Queries, Forms
and Reports. Additionally, large amounts of data may be summarized using a variety of tools available in Access such as crosstab queries, conditional formatting, calculated fields and mailing labels
via the Labels Wizard.
Monday, April 14

Creative Landscape Photography Workshop
This class will help the student/photographer better understand what is needed to create beautiful
landscape images. This was the goal Tom Doyle set for himself ten years ago; that is, he wanted to create
aesthetically pleasing landscape images — images that a viewer would look at, or wish that he/she had
made the image. The first session of CLP will be called “Learning to See.” A frequent comment from people
looking at Tom’s work is “you have some eye.”What this “some eye” thing really means is that over time, we
can develop the habits needed to find potentially beautiful images, and we can also learn what is necessary to create that beautiful image. “Learning to See” will go through what the photographer needs to do to
develop that “eye.” Ansel Adams had it right when he said “A beautiful image is a product of the mind, not the
camera.” In addition we will cover areas titled, “The Art of Landscape Photography.” The course will
include comprehensive presentations including “Light the Essential Element,” “Planning a Landscape
Image,” “Image Composition and Design,” “Image Capture,” and “Processing the Digital Image.”

churches in Western Europe. In spite of her medieval inclinations, she also has a great appreciation for modern art.
Art History: Gothic Architecture
With soaring spires, famous rose windows, walls of exquisite stained glass, and the distinctive pointed arch, Gothic churches count among the jewels of European architecture. We’ll learn to recognize
distinguishing features of this impressive style while also gaining an understanding of what to watch
for in neo-gothic structures closer to home.

Art History: Impressionism
Impressionist paintings are some of the most appreciated works of art today, making it difficult to
imagine that the movement was initially met with ridicule. The term “Impressionist” was first used as
an insult in response to an exhibition of new paintings in Paris in 1874. Rejected by the art establishment, painters including Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Pissaro, set up their own exhibitions. We’ll trace
the evolution of this artistic style and explore the artists’ new techniques and subject matter as we
enjoy their work.

Art History: Post-Impressionism
Though they did not agree on the way forward in art, in the 1880s artists including Van Gogh,
Cezanne, Seurat, and Gauguin reacted against the naturalism of the Impressionists. Instead they
were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use
unnatural color. We’ll discuss their varied approaches as we enjoy some of modern art’s best loved
paintings.

1939: The Golden Year of Classic Films
In 2010, the popular cable channel TCM (Turner Classic Movies) named 1939 the golden year for classic
films. Some would be nominated in various categories, others would introduce future stars, many would
share memorable dialogue, but all would advance the expectations of audiences globally and live on in
the collective consciences of film buffs everywhere. Now, 75 years later in 2014, Desmond’s “Commemorative Series” will highlight a selection of films from that golden year. Enjoy!
Long Gray Line: Shamrocks on the Hudson
West Point, our historic neighbor to the south, is the setting for award winning director, John Ford’s
tale of Duty, Honor, Country. Since its release 60 years ago, it has been a perennial Saint Patrick’s Day
favorite. Tyron Power stars as an Irish import and legendary athletic coach, with Marty Mahar, whose
career at the Point spanned 50 years and two World Wars. Maureen O’Hara, Donald Crisp, and Ward

Garson! It would garner for her the first of seven career Best Actress nominations. The storyline traces
the life of a schoolmaster who has dedicated his life, over several generations, to the well-being of his
students. To prove that Donat’s 1939 best actor win for Mr. Chips was a real shock, all you need to do
is contact “Mr. Smith” in Washington or ”Mr. Butler” in Atlanta!

took home “The Best” win in its category. Like so many classic children’s tales, in the tradition of The Velveteen Rabbit, The Little Prince, and others, UP! at first glance, seems simply entertaining. However, upon
closer examination, it deals with the shared human experiences of loss, risk, journeying, freedom and
renewal! Each of these begins a focus for both Passover and Easter. So, come reflect and celebrate!

Dark Victory: The Movie No One Wanted to Make
Even though it earned two “Best” nominations for both picture and actress, in 1939, this was a script
that no one would touch, at first. As one studio executive put it, “Who’ll pay good money to watch a
young women die of a brain tumor?” It was clearly a “taboo topic” at the time. However, then studio
queen Bette Davis, fresh from her 1938 “Jezebel” win, saw in this role, yet another way to have her career soar even higher, so she “pushed” both the envelope, story-wise, and the front office executives,
and got it done! The results: a “tour de force” from Davis and a gold mine for two companies, Warner
Brothers and Kleenex!

thus her journey begins. Deservedly nominated for best actress, screen legend Rosalind Russell is at

The Hudson River School
The Hudson River, virtually in our backyard, has served as an inspiration for artists, writers, and architects for well over two centuries. The Hudson River School was America’s first true artistic ‘brotherhood’ as its name came to identify a group of New York City based landscape painters that emerged
in the early 19th Century under the influence of Thomas Cole, and then flourished until the end of
the Civil War. In this presentation, we will look at how the Hudson River came to inspire early 19th
century artists, who defined an American national character through landscape imagery, based on
the glory of natural resources found within a reasonable distance of NY City. As the 19th century
progressed, so did artists’ exploration, and several landscape artists went further afield to explore the
natural wonders of our new nation as well as the concept of “Manifest Destiny.” Monday, April 14

Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine
With a history of over 2,000 years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has formed a unique system to
diagnose and cure illness. This approach is fundamentally different from that of Western medicine. In
Chinese medicine, the understanding of the human body is based on the holistic understanding of
the universe, and the treatment of illness is based primarily on the diagnosis and differentiation of syndromes. Therefore, those with an identical disease may be treated in different ways, and on the other
hand, different diseases may result in the same syndrome and are treated in similar ways. This class will
give an overview of the five element theory of Chinese medicine so that the student will have an understanding when Chinese medicine may be an appropriate treatment for their health concerns.

Hortulus Farm
Board the bus at the Desmond Campus at 10 am for a trip to Hortulus Farms in Newtown, PA. The
farm is a hundred-acre, 18th Century farmstead and nursery, situated amidst the rolling hills of historic Bucks County, PA. The Hortulus Farm Museum was founded in 2005 as a public showplace for the owners’ collection of
Bucks County Impressionist paintings, as well as other notable artifacts and collections. The Museum
Collection, begun in 1985, now totals 38 paintings and works on paper by such celebrated local
artists as Edward Redfield, George Sotter, William Lathrop, Fern Coppedge, and Daniel Garber. Also
notable is the owners’ horticultural library of almost 1,000 garden books, and collections of antique

Cornell Plantations
Board the bus at the Desmond Campus at 7:45 am and travel to the Cornell Plantations for an interesting tour. From Cornell University’s beginning, there was a resolve to amplify and even expand upon
the campus’ rich natural treasures. At the university’s opening ceremony in 1868, the eminent naturalist
Louis Agassiz remarked that no other area could compete with Cornell’s surroundings in the opportunities offered for the study of natural history. Cornell Plantations traces its roots to 1875, when Sage
College was constructed to house women at Cornell, and an arboretum of rare specimen trees and a
conservatory for teaching botany were integral parts of the early campus plan. Cornell Plantations is
alive with plants, purpose, and a presence that truly distinguishes the university among its peers. The
leadership in environmental conservation and education is helping protect native species and habitats
in Plantations natural areas, throughout the region, and beyond. Cornell Plantations’ current holdings
include over 4,000 acres of natural and constructed landscape, and natural history collections. Please
bring a bag lunch to enjoy on site. We will board the bus at 3 pm for the return trip.

From Alice Curtis Desmond:
We went to Europe on our honeymoon and visited with Cousin Bessie
in Paris. During the war, Cousin Bessie de Talleyrand had made herself
beloved all over France as head of the French Red Cross.
One night at the Ritz, Tom told me something that stunned me. It
seemed, at the age of fourteen, he had heard Theodore Roosevelt speak
at a county fair. The dynamic T.R. had shaken his hand and said, “Son,
you look like a bright boy, when you grow up you should go into politics.”
Ever since, it seemed, that had been Tom Desmond’s ambition. And he
said to me, “Now I’ve made money enough so I can. When we return to
New York, I’m considering selling my construction business and moving to some town up the Hudson that will be a good base for a political
career.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. I wept and pleaded with him not to think of giving up his successful
business, for I knew Father would be furious. It had been the fact that Tom was the sole owner of a
prosperous construction firm that had attracted my father to him in the first place. He had no use for
politicians. “Democrats or Republicans, they’re all rascals,” he often said.

But thinking makes it so.

How admirable,
He who thinks not, “Life is fleeting,”
When he sees the lightning-flash.
Zen poet, Basho

looking at several short reflections by writers and poets on the nature of the poetic instinct, we will
read a number of poems that will, hopefully, engage us viscerally, enable us to find the genuine
within ourselves and offer us not a definition of what it means to be human but a depiction.

This “for-fun” discussion will take a close look at a range of little-known baseball rules that normally
go unnoticed when games run smoothly, as well as those that often add confusion and controversy
when enforced (e.g. the “obstruction” call in last year’s World Series). Summaries of actual MLB
on-field rulings (taken from Peter E. Meltzer’s So You Think You Know Baseball?) will serve not only to
“bring to life” some of the rules we’re discussing, but also to help us appreciate just how complex the
seemingly simple game of baseball really is. Bill Rello is a former certified New York City PSAL umpire

The First Phone Call from Heaven
It is highly recommended that you read The First Phone Call from Heaven, by Mitch Albom, prior to
the class. Quotes from the book will be used to help raise religious, spiritual, secular and personal
questions. You will become engaged no matter what your perspective! “Who am I?” The afterlife, the
nature of the universe, the nature of a good life, and how you want to lead your life will all be matters
of discussion. You are welcome with your perspective, thoughts, and input amidst warmth, receptivity and enthusiasm.
