Parade Home Snapshots include the home number, a thumbnail

scan to navigate your way to the homes. Suggested Route Maps

NEIGHBORHOOD RESPECT
You are in someone else’s neighborhood when you tour. Be sure
to honor the no-parking areas and do not block driveways or drive
on lawns. Try to leave at least two car widths for passing traffic.
TAKING PICTURES & MEASUREMENTS
Some builders are flattered if you take photos or measurements.
Others would prefer that you refrain from taking photos. Please
ask permission before you begin. Be sensitive to other people
visiting the home at the same time by not obstructing their view.
CHILDREN FREE ADMISSION

atmosphere for you to tour. For their safety, and for the pleasure
of others touring, please keep children near you at all times.

Kitchen Tips and Trends for 2013 Style
You’ve been thinking about it for awhile and are now ready to renovate the
hub of the family home—the kitchen! You’ve torn photos from magazines,
your Pinterest page is full of ideas and you’ve seen 100’s of things you want
browsing on Houzz. Now what?
The first step
is to focus on
the big picture.
Think about your
lifestyle
and
how you want
your kitchen to
function for your
family before you
choose the design
elements. Start
to look closely at
how you and your
family currently
use the kitchen, what is working and what isn’t. Jan Lehman of Standale
Interiors tells us to “consider your lifestyle; don’t just go with the trends. What
works for one family may not work for yours. For example Soapstone is a
beautiful counter material, but it requires lots of care and may not be the best
choice for a busy young family.” Standale Interiors has developed a series of
questions to ask yourself before getting started with your kitchen.
•What is the overall feel you want for your kitchen? Sleek contemporary,
warm/cozy country, traditional, open & airy, strictly functional, formal.
•How many cooks are working in the kitchen at the same time?
•Do you have elaborate meals or does your family eat on the run?
•Do you want to include an informal dining area? Study/desk area?
•What about storage space, do you like your small appliances on display or
tucked away?
•Do you want an organized recycling station in the kitchen or at least close by?
•Will you have a TV in the kitchen?
•Do you want the kitchen to open to the rest of the home?
•Anyone in the family with physical limitations?
•Do you have pets?
Once you have the answers to these questions it’s time to bring in the
professionals. Many people think doing it yourself is the cheapest route.
That might not be true. A
professional kitchen designer
will help you get the most
out of your space within your
budget while avoiding some
of those costly mistakes that
afflict many do-it-yourselfers.
They can help you bring style,
form and function together
by incorporating the latest
appliances, storage options and finishes plus make sure the electrical outlets
are where they need to be. You may be able to afford your dream kitchen and
not know it.
Next comes the fun part, creating the design. Here are some of the latest
trends you may want to include in your makeover.
Mix and Match Styles and Materials
A dash of this, a pinch of that. “Look at using different materials and surfaces.
Steve Kilgore of Kilgore Builders blends granite and silestone to create a great
look for this homeowner,” says Lehman. “By blending materials, they were
able to get high end finishes without breaking the budget.” Or consider a
cabinet or island in a color or wood that’s different from the rest of the kitchen.
Think of it like putting on a patterned scarf with a solid-color shirt. More than
a just finishing touch, it breaks up the monotony to become a pivotal focal
point for your kitchen.
Custom Kitchen Storage
A place for everything and
everything in its place is the mantra
for ultra-organized kitchens. Look
at taking your cabinets from the
floor to the ceiling to provide that
much needed storage. Behind the
doors and drawers, customize with
organizational extras now available,
including slots for cutting boards, cookie sheets, knives, pullout recycling bins,
more efficient lazy Susans, drawers for stacking dishware, and more. These
little organizational extras add a great deal of function and are often what
homeowners end up loving the most.

finishes, maybe find a really cool
statement pull for your pantry.
Don’t forget about the
lighting. Lighting is eye candy for the kitchen, a sumptuous finishing touch.
Backsplashes are another area to incorporate your personal touch.
Not So “Plain Jane” anymore
Neutrals white and gray with pops of color is the new norm. “You can make it
your own with pops of color and interesting details while keeping it saleable,”
says Lehman.
Furniture Details for Kitchen Cabinets
Today’s most interesting styles take their finishing touches from furniture and
architecture. Add-ons such as undercounter corbels and fancy feet on kitchen
cabinets and islands create the look of fine furniture. Carvings, cutouts, and
moldings add emphasis to a cabinet’s decorative aspects. Mixing types of
storage in a kitchen keeps the design feeling fresh and avoids a room full of
heavy cabinetry.
In the end the kitchen has to reflect your lifestyle. Don’t let the designer make
all the decisions, he/she is there to give you advice and guide you through the
process. It’s your kitchen and ultimately you and your family know what will
work best.
