COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN BOOK INFO

Keep those cards and letters coming – or should I say keep those old paper race results coming. Thank
you Grant White and Mark Bedenbaugh! Both of them sent me some and old results are like old friends; it is
always great to see them again. For race results it is especially fun when you ran some of them. For example
the Save The Heart 5k which Grant sent us. There were Kathy and my names and times right there in the
results and neither of us could remember the race. The results didn‟t have the City and State on them, but they
did have the date, so we went to our old running logs and found out that it was in Lancaster, SC. Then we sort
of remembered it. Funny how memory works.
Terry Hamlin sent in an article every runner should read. Some of you know Terry and know that he
was seriously injured in an accident which led to the loss of a leg. Kathy and I have known Terry for years: in
fact for as far back as when Kathy began running in the late 1970s as he was President of the Charleston
Running Club when we joined it in 1978. We used to go to the Complete Runner store in Mt Pleasant (Terry
was co-owner along with Bob Schlau and Butch Cody if memory serves me) and get excellent advice on
running shoes and gear. One of Kathy‟s early running goals was to win an award at the Women‟s Distance
Classic 3 mile which Terry had started in 1979, one of the first women‟s only races that I know about. Awards
went to the top 10 finishers only.
I remember that Terry had laboriously measured that course with a steel tape (and if you think that is
easy or fun, get him to tell you about it). Finally at the fifth running in 1983 Kathy ran a P.R. 20:58 to take 10th
place and finally win the award she wanted so badly. I compiled the results for Terry that year and sent them to
RACING SOUTH (predecessor of RUNNING JOURNAL) and the complete results are in my SC Races
Database (and yes I have sent out just over a dozen copies, your copy is still waiting for you if you e-mail me
and ask for it).
But I digress. Terry was the guy Dr. Marcus Newberry went to (both of them were working for MUSC
at the time) when he starting thinking about creating a race over the Cooper River Bridge. Terry measured the
course for the first Bridge Run. As I hope all of you know by now, I‟ve written a book about the history of the
Cooper River Bridge Run. It‟s being edited by the publisher as I write this so I don‟t know what will get cut out
(they need to cut it down from my 389 page manuscript to 250 pages due to size and cost considerations) so I
hope that the article Terry wrote for me (back in ‟84 for the Charleston Running club newsletter when I was
editing it) will appear uncut. Here is a little excerpt to whet your appetite and show you how influential Terry
was:
THE FIRST BRIDGE RUN
Terry Hamlin
Originally appeared in the March-April 1984 LOW COUNTRY RUNNER
The first Cooper River Bridge Run came about as a result originally of a
collaboration between Dr. Marc Newberry and me. One day he came to my lab and said “I
have an idea about a race. A race over the bridge.” He came to me because he knew I was
a runner and I was President of the Charleston Running Club at the time. I was working
in clinical chemistry at the Medical University.
Marc wanted to have MUSC and the CRC tie together the community fitness concept, so
to speak, and thought a run across the bridge was a good way to publicize the concept. I
said “Great, I‟ve thought about that too, but there are a lot of problems.” We hashed
the ideas and problems out.
We decided more people needed to be involved, so we formed a committee which
included Roy Hill, Keith Hamilton, Brian Smith and others. We decided on a date, the
first week in April, and met every week at the Medical University for about two and a
half months before the race.
I also interviewed Dr. Newberry for the book and here is an excerpt of what he said:
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. MARCUS NEWBERRY founder of the Cooper River Bridge Run
Telephone interview with Cedric Jaggers on July 31, 2010
CJ Will you tell us how the Bridge Run came about? Charleston area people have heard
you visited a track built by Bonne Bell Cosmetics to encourage their employees to run and
wanted to do something to encourage fitness in Charleston.
MARC I thought if a cosmetics company can do that for its employees, then MUSC
should try to do it in spades and do it for all the people in the community all around
us. Terry Hamlin also worked at MUSC and he was the President of the Charleston Running
Club at the time. He gave me some advice on running.
Enough from the book; Terry was also always the runner I wanted to catch and never did. One year
when I was in probably my best shape, I came within about 3 feet of him (from behind) as we approached the
first span of the Bridge. I felt great and thought, hey maybe this is the year and I should surge and blow past
him. Thank goodness I made myself think again about that bad idea (those of you who know me know I‟m a
terrible uphill runner), and sure enough Terry pulled away from me going up and probably finished a minute or
more ahead of me. He never knew I was there that day, nor that he served as an inspiration for me even though
I could never catch him.
Terry told me he finished 36th in the first Cooper River Bridge Run (he ran 37:20) after having helped
with registration right up until almost the moment the race started. He was 11th in the 1979 race, and he ran
35:41 in the 1981 Bridge Run. I know Terry ran 3:02:40 at the first Island Marathon (now the Kiawah Island
Marathon) also remember, but not the time, when he was well under 3 hours in the marathon, maybe before and
at Boston? Terry was inducted into the Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame in 2003. Anyway, I just wanted
you to know that Terry was a very good runner and I think he has a lot to say to runners. Terry told me he plans
to run the Bridge Run this year and I look forward to seeing him there.
Do you have races you hate to miss? For me the Charlie Post Classic tops that list. Lately it seems like
some kind of illness or surgery has made it impossible for us to make it down to the low country for the race.
Charlie was a friend of mine and I still miss him and think of him often. I remember when Kathy and I bought
a new ‟83 RX-7 how interested he was in the changes since he had a ‟79 model.
Back in the day, he helped me recover from every one of the marathons I ran (except the first one which
was before he moved to Charleston.) Charlie also helped hundreds of other runners. He had a way of being
able to diagnose running problems and could put his finger, sometimes literally, right on the problem. He put
on a free medical clinic at the College of Charleston where he was team physician, and I was waiting there to
see him the night of his accident. I walked over to his house on George Street when he didn‟t show up, and
knocked on his door. No answer. I found out the reason when I got home and I was horrified, but more on that
later.
Charlie also became Kathy and my family doctor as well as our friend. You can probably blame (or
credit) Charlie with getting me interested in keeping up with complete race results. I recall watching him toss
all the finish line cards, Chronomix timer tape, and the award winners list (which I had already copied) into the
burning trash barrel at Brittlebank Park after his first „Family Practice Fitness Race‟ in 1980 (the 5k and 15k
races that were taken over by the Charleston Running Club and renamed the Charlie Post Classic after Charlie‟s
accident). I told him he should have compiled complete results and that since we couldn‟t do it because all the
information was burning, that I would do the results for him in his races from then on.
If you need a good laugh, look at the 1981 and 1982 results in the Charlie Post Classic folder (and try to
read my chicken scratch handwriting) in the SC Races Database disk (okay, only a dozen or so of you have a
copy of that disk, but hey, I offered it to all of you so you could open it up now and look at it – and the offer still
stands. If you want a copy of the disk, e-mail me with your request and address and I‟ll mail it to you). The
1983 results look a bit better since I typed them instead of hand writing them. I was glad when the very early
computer programs came along and the results were computer sorted and printed for 1984. I remember going to
a party at Charlie‟s house and lending him my VCR tape (I had just bought my first one specifically to record
the Olympic running events) of the Olympics. Never got it back due to his untimely death, but needless to say
that doesn‟t matter.
Wow, I ramble on. Anyway, this year I had melanoma cancer surgery on my ear, had the stitches taken
out the Monday before the race and still have some inflammation today January 29th as I sit here typing this at
9:15 A.M. instead of being on Sullivan‟s Island running the Charlie Post Classic as I would like to be.
I remember the horror when I heard about his accident when he was training for the Iron Man Triathlon
and some jerk had parked their van in the bike lane on the Isle of Palms and Charlie had come around a (blind)
corner head down and ran head on into that van illegally parked there. His neck was broken instantly, he was a
quadriplegic, and complications from the injury led to his death several years later.
If we could, we would run (or in Kathy‟s case walk it due to her M.S.) the Charlie Post race every year.
Charlie was our friend and we miss him. I hope he is never forgotten.
Kathy and I went into the Bi-Lo grocery store today to pick up some apples and bananas and just inside
the door was a stand with an advertisement and applications for the upcoming Cooper River Bridge Run. I was
surprised that there was only one left. Maybe that is a good sign for the race.
Some publicity has finally been released on my Bridge Run book. If you are interested (and I really
hope a lot of you are) it is at the end of this newsletter. Since my publisher said I could make side deals, I‟ll
make this offer. If you prefer to get it directly from me and get it an autographed copy, send me an e-mail and
we can make the arrangements.
Larry Hamilton sent me a letter the other day. For those of you who don‟t know Larry, he has written
the Running Column in the State Newspaper in Columbia for years. We‟ve known him since way back at the
scene of the crime, and I love to remind him about the year when he was Race Director for the Governor‟s Cup
races and started the race EARLY while Kathy and I were inside (separate) Port-A-Lets. It wasn‟t too funny at
the time since we were both in great shape and had to pass hundreds of people and ran much slower than we
would have, but now it seems pretty funny. Time gives us perspective on things, and hopefully some maturity
and the ability to laugh as well.
Anyway, Larry became the first official purchaser of the book as he sent me a check (which I will not
cash until I mail him a copy of the book) for the cover price and estimated postage. Thank you Larry. The
letter was very nice and it is one which I will keep, and will not reproduce in the Gazette.
Publicizing a book can take a lot of time and I hope it turns out to be fun. I used to take a printed precurser to some of the appendix charts which appear in the book by the Channel 5 television station for Warren
Peper to use during his live broadcasts of the race. He now has a program on a cable channel in Charleston and
invited me to appear on his program. We are supposed to go to Charleston for filming on March 23, and that
should be interesting. I have told the publishers that I will do book signings at the Cooper River Bridge Run
Expo on the Thursday and Friday afternoons before the race. They also have all the authors who have been
published by Evening Post Books to appear at a book fair in Columbia in May. In April I‟m going to speak at a
Charleston Running Club meeting. I would be glad to do the same for any running clubs in the state if any
clubs are interested.
I know my book will never be a bestseller, but I sure hope that everyone who has ever run or considered
running or walking the Bridge Run will seriously consider buying a copy. After Evening Post Books agreed to
publish the book they wanted to include a picture in every chapter. I went through all the newspaper articles
and recommended which picture I thought they should use.
I know that Jason Leslie, who was assigned to edit the book, spent an entire day (maybe more) going
through the hundreds of boxes of photos (each with hundreds of photos by different newspaper photographers)
to find the photos for each year. I think when you see the pictures in each chapter you will agree that he did a
great job. The cover photo gives you a feeling for what a fabulous job he did.
There is one picture I was really glad Jason found and included. That is the spectacular aerial photo of
the bridge in 1986. So what, you say? If you remember that race you know how fog enshrouded the bridge and
caused a wreck which blocked the bridge and delayed the race. The photo shows the bridge covered with fog
and it is spectacular. Dare I say that some people may buy the book just for the photos? Hey, nobody ever buys
a book or magazine just for pictures do they Mr. Hefner?
Okay, I‟ve pushed enough to try to get you to buy my book, but if I don‟t do it who will? After
spending a year to write it and months, proof reading and worrying about it coming out, Kathy and I proof the
final pages of the final lay out and sent it back late Saturday night. Now it is supposed to go to the printer to
actually be published. I don‟t know how much of my 389 page manuscript has been cut out. Guess I‟ll find out
when we get a copy of the actual book which is supposed to be about the middle of the month. I can‟t wait and
I hope you can‟t either. *Flash.* Got the final 278 page proof draft today and just finished finding the last of
the errors and e-mailed it back to the publisher. They said they would take it to the printer tomorrow. Finally!
February 28, 2011. Let me hear from you. Cedric

------------------------------------------------------------- --------- ----USATF SOUTH CAROLINA LONG DISTANCE RUNNERS OF THE YEAR
Bill Marable, USATF State Record Keeper
Neville Miller and Kristi Arledge have been chosen South Carolina Long Distance Runners of the Year by USA
Track and Field for 2010. Also chosen were outstanding masters competitors, George Luke and Susi Smith.
Neville Miller photo from David Quick‟s blog
Winning 21 of 25 races, Neville Miller dominated the Lowcountry running scene. Originally from St. Louis, he
went to the University of Missouri, where he walked on the track team and earned All-America honors as a
middle distance runner. He has personal bests of 1:47.08 for 800 meters and 3:45.24 for 1500 meters along
with competing in the 2008 US Olympic Trials in the 800. In 2006, he graduated from college with dual
degrees in atmospheric science and communications. In July 2008, he joined WCIV-TV in Charleston as a
weekend meteorologist and began running road races. His best wins came at the Rice Run 5K in 15:12 and at
Charleston‟s Race for the Cure 5K in 15:06. The 28 year old Mt. Pleasant resident ran well in the big races,
placing 24th at the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K in 31:29 and being the runner-up at the Turkey Day 5K in
15:05. The year was also important as he got married to a former Missouri track athlete. He was selected for
this award over Eric Ashton, Wallace Campbell, Jon Stoehr and Karl Walsh.
With her 40th birthday coming up in 2010 and the goal of a sub 3 hour marathon, Kristi Arledge really dedicated
herself to running, and it paid off. The Simpsonville resident won 4 of 8 state races, including 2 of 3 half
marathons, winning Greer Earth Day in 1:23:01, iRecycle in 1:26:36 and finishing runner-up at Runfest in
1:24:17. Two of those races came after a car accident in which she suffered arm and knee injuries. The best
victory for the mother of two came in the Green Valley Road Race 10 Mile clocking 1:02:36. She finished an
impressive second at the Reedy River run 10K in 37:49 and third at the Run Downtown 5K in 18:39. On the
marathon front, she accomplished her goal at the end of 2009 and then ran another in 2:58:52 the following
year, in winning the Tobacco Road Marathon in Cary, NC. She is employed at a local YMCA as a group fitness
trainer. In winning this award, she beat out Anne Wyman Cipolla, Anne Clinton, Sara Powell and Caitlin
Ranson.
Setting three state records, George Luke won his age group in all 19 races he competed in. Having turned 70 in
March, he had his best performances in five years after having taken up running way back in 1978. The
Syracuse, NY native established 70-74 age group records for 5K at the Spring Water Festival in 20:24, 8K at
the Sunrise Run in 34:23 and 10K at the Reedy River Run in 43:47. The father of four and grandfather of ten
also ran a fast downhill 12K of 51:59 at Ray Tanner‟s Home Run. He and his wife moved to Greenville in 2002
from New Jersey, when he retired from his career as a research chemist. The other contenders for this award
were Eric Ashton, Chris Giordanelli, Tom Mather and Bob Schlau.
A 30 year running veteran Susi Smith had one of her best years, winning her age group in all 14 races she
entered. Upon turning 50 at the end of 2009, she started coming on strong after several years of battling
injuries. The Greenvillian had impressive age group wins at the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K in 39:55, the
Reedy River Run 10K in 40:47, the Run Downtown 5K in 19:45 and the Runfest Half Marathon in 1:29:04.
During the year, she was the top masters in eight events and scored an overall win at the Governor‟s Cup 8K in
32:46. A mother of three and grandmother of one, she set a 50-54 age group state record of 1:06:51 for 10
miles at the Green Valley Road Race. She is the Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Greenville
County, which is a non-profit that helps young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.
After appearing on the cover of a local fitness magazine, she has gotten into coaching other women runners.
She won this award over Kristi Arledge, Dian Ford, Sarah McClean and Lisa Tolley.
A runner must be a resident of the state and a United States citizen to be eligible for this award. Only distance
events in South Carolina are considered.

------------------------------------------------------------- --------- ---THE RE-MAKING OF A RUNNER Terry Hamlin
As a runner for forty-seven years, the thought of losing my ability to run, or even walk without aid, was
a nightmare that had only manifested itself in my sleep until September 18, 2009. On that morning, my life
changed forever.
I was hunting, as I had hundreds of times since I was a child. On that day, however, a piece of
equipment I trusted, failed. I fell from my treestand and my left leg and ankle and foot was shattered. I suffered
multiple compound fractures of my leg, my ankle was crushed and my heel was destroyed. Doctors did the best
they could over the next six months to repair the damage, but a full recovery was not to be. The choice I faced
was to live my life as a cripple and in debilitating pain, or to make a decision I would not wish on anyone. Life
as a cripple, (and I don‟t like the word, but that is what I was at the time), was something I could not bear. In
order to improve the quality of my life, and become as close to what I was before the injury as possible,
amputation was necessary. My wife cried and anguished when I told her of my options and decision. My
doctors, however, told me I was making the right choice. I researched my options thoroughly, talked to several
orthopedic surgeons, my family physician, fellow amputees and prayed constantly for the answer to my
dilemma.
Removing a limb for any reason is not to be taken lightly. I knew, however, that through my research
and consultations, I had no other choice to get back to “Terry”. Chronic pain and lack of mobility is a life
shortening situation, to say nothing of the terrible decrease in one‟s quality of life. I was then referred to an
orthopedic surgeon specializing in the Ertyl Procedure amputation method. This operation involves bolting the
tibia and fibula together, and creating a bone „bridge‟ between the two, to make for a much stronger residual
limb that can take the punishment of high activity athletes and individuals. Next, I was sent to Floyd Brace
Company for a consultation.
This company is what I credit my astounding recovery to. Of course, my faith in God is my core, but we
have to act and take action to fulfill the plan for our life. I went to talk with the owner, Larry Wiley, and his
great staff. The company is manned by highly trained prosthetists like Larry and his business partner and coowner, Maurice Johnson. I had numerous questions, and even more fears. My question were answered, and
most of my fears alleviated after talking with Larry and Ricky Miller, a technician and himself a below the knee
amputee. Ricky was very helpful, having firsthand experience what an amputee can expect, and the day to day
issues that arise with care of the limb and regaining movement. I also talked with amputee runners Richard
Blalock and Jeff Nolan. They had been able to resume their running lives as a result of this procedure and this
great help. After hearing how their lives improved after amputation, I was settled in my mind.
To remove a limb is an incredibly difficult decision and a strange mental process, to say the least. One
of the main concerns I had was what type of person would emerge from this operation. After all, I had my leg
for fifty-eight years, and had been a pretty fast runner in my day. Also, how would things like post traumatic
stress, which was full blown out of control in me already, be handled? There were so many variables, so many
risks, but such a great chance at a new lease in life to be considered. And there was another huge piece to this
puzzle to be considered.
My sweet wife did not take the news well. She is a person I would give my life for, and she feels the
same. Was it going to be fair to her? After all, I was going to be down and out for a long time. Dolly had
already spent seven months as my caretaker. I was working, but in terrible suffering, which I seldom shared
with anyone other than Dolly, to be alleviated. She wanted my pain to be removed, but was fully aware of the
risks of this surgery. It turns out, her fears were well founded. I had the surgery on May 21st. I developed a
serious infection which was not recognized quickly enough, and suffered a fall, which blew the leg open. Back
to the hospital for another operation.
After the operation, I was finally discharged, but it was not recognized that I had developed clots in both
my good and residual leg. I got home and the next day had trouble breathing. Back to the ER. Dr. Kelly, the ER
physician, said he had never seen someone survive the passing of clots this size through the heart to the lungs.
He said all those years of running literally saved my life. He said my heart was incredibly strong, and my
arteries and veins were huge from all that training. A „normal‟ person would be on the way to the morgue. I
made it though, and in August, Floyd Brace went into action.
First, a little about the company. Floyd Brace was started in 1942 by Wilbur Floyd, a Navy veteran who
had seen the effects of war, polio, trauma and other diseases on mobility and the quality of life of those who
suffered these terribly sad conditions. Unbelievably, the company is still working with some of those first
patients. They were children in 1942, and are now elderly, but walking, thanks to this compassionate company.
Today, the company is run by Larry Wiley and Maurice Johnson, both initially trained in the military
and then at Northwestern University. The staff of Larry, Ricky, Maurice, Josh and all their wonderful
colleagues are emotionally and physically invested in the health of their patients. Ricky takes great pride in his
work, and enjoys customizing sockets with a bit of the personality of the user. They make camo sockets, nascar
arms, and I have even seen a largemouth bass leg socket made for an avid fisherman. My socket is the flag of
my dearly loved United States. They have seen fit to create the Phoenix Athletes: teams of runners, basketball
players, triathletes and other sports enthusiasts, and support the concepts of „can do‟ among mobility impaired
individuals. Floyd Brace has helped thousands of patients over the years, but each one is the most important one
to them.
As the Founder of the Charleston Running Club, the co- founder of The Cooper River Bridge Run,
veteran of countless road races and a man who has logged more miles than most, I could not bear the thought of
losing my sport and pastime. But, with the help of this great, compassionate company and its supportive staff, I
have taken my first running steps again, seen the addition of an Amputee Team Division for the Bridge Run,
and was recently asked to become a Phoenix Athlete. As far as I am concerned, they have re-made this runner,
and I am blessed.
------------------------------------------------------------- --------- ----PALMETTO GRAND PRIX AWARDS John Sneed
The Awards Lunch for the 2010 Palmetto Grand Prix, PGP, was held in Columbia, SC,
Saturday 29 January. For those of you who are not familiar with the PGP, here's a brief
description. The PGP is an annual series of running races of differing lengths held in
various cities and towns across the state. It is sponsored and directed by Strictly Running
of Columbia. Participants compete by running the races and earning points, depending on
their finish position in each race, which are totaled at the end of the year to determine
division winners. There are male and female divisions in the following age groups: Open,
up to age 39; Masters, age 40 to 49; Grand Masters, 50 to 59; Senior Masters, 60 to 69;
and, Veteran Masters, 70 and up. The top three point earners in each division receive
awards.
In 2010 sixty-two races from 5K to 1/2 marathon in distance were on the schedule for
runners to choose from. At least six races must be completed to be eligible for awards
and only a runner's best 21 races count. Bonus points are given for runners completing
more than 21 races, setting a state record, and/or for double point races. More on the
PGP and Strictly Running can be found at: http://www.strictlyrunning.com/index8.asp
While each race has its own challenges and rewards, the PGP adds to that by the additional
challenge of the series. It also has the advantage that it rewards more than just speed, as
persistence and determination are also factors, i.e. the fastest runners do not necessarily
win the series.
We had a great year! Nancee completed 27 PGP races and earned enough points to
qualifying her for 1st Place Female Grand Masters. John completed 28 PGP races and
scored well enough for 2nd Place Male Grand Masters. We really enjoyed the series
and the fellowship of the like-minded folks who chase PGP points all over the state.
The award lunch was fun and the series sponsor, Strictly Running, was very generous with
the goodies. Rewards for the year's efforts included: complementary registration fee for
the Red Nose Race of our choice, (5K & 10K held in Columbia the morning of the awards);
a pair of running shoes of our choice or a $100 gift certificate; certificates of achievement;
personalized plaques; and the awards lunch at Harper's Restaurant where we were allowed
to bring guests, Strictly Running picking up the tab. John's youngest daughter, Elizabeth
(Beth) and her husband Chris attended.
One of the highlights of the awards was the presentation of a plaque, from the runners, to
the Palmetto Grand Prix Director, Selwyn Blake, in recognition and appreciation of his hard
work on the Grand Prix. John had the privilege of making the presentation.
Following are a few pictures with notes from the Red Nose Races and the PGP awards lunch.
We look forward to running in Grand Prix races in 2011 and seeing all our "point chaser" friends
on the road.
Keep in touch,
John and Nancee
Red Nose 5K Run t-shirt art and 1st Place Age Group medals won by John & Nancee.
Red Nose 5K start line a couple of minutes before gun time start. Angel was Open Division
Champion in the 2010 Palmetto Grand Prix. Close to start time John will get a couple of rows back
to allow the faster runners, like Angel, have a clean start.
Nearing the finish line. It was chilly, but not bad at about 40 degrees. Once you start running,
40 degrees feels good. There were 289 finishers in the 5K race and 214 in the 10K.
Nancee near finish. Most runners don't, shall we say, look their best near the finish of a race.
If you strive to do your best, whatever pace that may be, racing is damn hard work!
Just a few more feet. If you meter your energy properly, a serious runner will reach the finish
line near exhaustion. For short races the recovery doesn't take long.
At Harper's Restaurant for the awards. From left to right: Beth White (John's youngest daughter),
Nancee, John, Gloria Floyd, Arnold Floyd, and Chris White (Beth's husband).
Plaque presented to Selwyn Blake, the Palmetto Grand Prix Director.
John presenting the plaque to Selwyn on behalf of the runners.
Mark Bedenbaugh, on right, of Strictly Running and 2010 PGP Masters Champion, looks on.
Selwyn and Mark are key folks in SC running. Many runners consider Strictly Running the best
thing going for runners in the state. Oh, we should mention that Selwyn holds at least six state
records, is in the Hall of Fame, and has been Runner of The Year a number of times.
Angel Manuel, 1st Open Division and Robbie McClendon, 2nd Open. Robbie scored more points
in the 2010 PGP than any other participant. His achievement is especially notable as his age puts
him in the Grand Masters Division but he scored enough points to have his choice of 1st Grand
Masters, 1st Masters, or 2nd Open. Only Angel outscored him in the Open Division. That's why
we call Robbie "The Man!".
Debbie Heaton, 1st Place Female Open Division, receives her awards.
Top lady PGP runners: Kristin Schmitz, 2nd Open Division; Debbie Heaton, 1st Open Division;
and, Amy McDonaugh, 3rd Open Division.
Daphne Capps, 2nd Female Senior Masters; E.K. Tolley-Beeson, 1st Senior Masters; and
Brigitte Smith, 3rd Senior Masters.
Geary McAlister, 3rd Masters Division, with Certificate of Achievement. In spite of missing
several months of racing at the end of the year due to an injury, Geary scored enough points
to move up from the Grand Masters Division. We are happy to report Geary is back to racing
and getting faster each week.
Sharon Cole, 3rd Masters, and Susan Rogers, 2nd Masters.
Drew "Hollywood" Walker, a Half Marathon fan and 1st Grand Masters, and John. Drew ran
77 races in 2010! Makes John look lazy with only 31. We don't know how Drew can still walk.
Kristin Schmitz with Carol Wallace, 2nd Place Grand Masters.
Two SC Road Runners Hall of Fame members, Gerry Carner and Judy Walls, both receiving
PGP awards at the event. Other Hall of Fame members in attendance include: Dian Ford,
E.K. Tolly-Beeson, Franklin "Doc" Mason, and Selwyn Blake.
Evelyn Tripp is flanked by her daughters Judy Walls and Dian Ford, on right. Evelyn is in the
SC Running Records book and recently set SC and National records for fastest ever 5K by a
lady, 95 to 100 years of age! Evelyn's descendants are rewriting the SC records book. A
quick count shows that she and her expanded family currently holds at least twenty state
records. Dian holds at least nine (the records book as posted at the Strictly Running web site
is not up to date), and has been SC Long Distance Runner of The Year a number of times.
That's one fast family!
Nineteen year old Tom Ford won the day's Red Nose 5K in 16:45 (5:24).
Franklin "Doc" Mason, 2nd Veteran Masters, with James "Jimmy" Adams, 1st Veteran Masters.
If you haven't seen it, there is a great article in The State newspaper about the Running Dentist at:
http://www.thestate.com/2011/02/12/1691015/dentist-has-feet-in-mind.html Jimmy and John have been running
races together for about 30 years. When he was a bit younger, Jimmy always won.
Three of the top Senior Masters in SC: John; Gerry Carner 1st Senior Masters; and Arnold Floyd,
2nd Senior Masters. All three were among the about eighty "top open and age group runners,
race directors, and other contributors to running in the state" chosen by the USA Track and Field
to vote for South Carolina's Long Distance Runner of the Year for 2010. Many of the day's award
participants were also in that select group. That recognition is an honor and voting is a privilege.
Drew Walker and Kristin Schmitz with Certificates of Achievement. Certificates read, in part, "In
Recognition of Athletic Achievement, This Award is Presented To ......."
Ginger Carner, Gerry's wife.
Nancee and John with the goodies.
Kristin and husband William Schmitz. Two fine young athletes. Bike, swim, run...... roads, trails,
you name, it they do it. They competed in over 60 events in 2010. In addition to Kristin's PGP
accomplishments, both were recognized as winners in several categories in the Tour de Columbia,
another popular running series, and related Columbia Running Club events.
Kristin and John. Kristen is just a little faster, but John typically goes out too fast, so they can
get an idea of how their races are going by where in the race Kristin passes John.
John and good friend Franklin "Doc" Mason. Doc wears his Veteran Master's medal from the
morning's Red Nose 10K Run. Doc has completed over 710 races, 120 of them have been
marathons, (26.2 miles), including 15 runs at Boston and 8 at New York City. Impressive for a
guy who didn't start running seriously until near age sixty!
John and Nancee enjoying the day. All those early morning get-ups, long drives, and races under
all types of conditions were worth it. The best part, of course, is the fellowship of like-minded
folks. Our experience has been that runners are among the finest and the nicest people one will
ever meet. Competitive runners, even though their looks may often belie it, are also some of the
toughest people around, mentally and physically.
A future champion athlete? Don't know, but do know she, like all the rest of us, was having fun!
See Ya! John & Nancee

------------------------------------------------------------- --------- ---WAVE START COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN AWARDS SYSTEM
People have been asking me how the awards would work at the Bridge Run this year since it will be the
first time the race has used the Wave Start. I didn‟t know. So I went to Chuck Magera, the Charleston Running
Club representative on the Bridge Run Committee, and asked (e-mail is included in this Gazette), basically he
said that gun time would be used for award winners overall, and chip times for all non money age groups....
and that the awards ceremony will start around 10AM, but they will have the age group lists at the awards area
around 9:30...as usual, and they will only call the overall, masters, grand masters and Marcus Newberry awards
on the stage. They will also have new awards this year....laser etched acrylics in different sizes for overall, age
groups, and top 5%.
I also went to the Bridge Run website www.bridgerun.com and found this information:
Tell me about the Awards Ceremony
The Overall Awards will be presented as usual at the finish Line Festivities in Marion Square, at about 10 am. New this
year is the Chick-fil-A 'Top 100' award, which goes to the top 50 local Men and the top 50 local Women. A cutoff time for
men and women will be called, and the awards will be picked up at the nearby Chick-fil-A tent.
The Age Group Awards will immediately follow. Top 3 in each age-group will be called, plus a cutoff time for the top 5% in
the group. All Age-group awards will be picked up at the Running Club tent adjacent to the Stage. Age group awards go to
the top 5%, or the top 25 if there are more than 500 people in the group.
I think it will be interesting to see how it works out. I hope everything goes smoothly. CJ

RRCA Roads Scholar 2011 Grant Applications Available
Deadline for $5000 development stipends April 30, 2011
ARLINGTON, Va. - Since 1996, the Road Runners Club of America has awarded stipends through its
Roads Scholar program to assist American post-collegiate road runners who show great promise to
develop into national and world class road running athletes.
The Roads Scholar program has distributed more than $330,000 to emerging U.S. distance runners since
the programs inception. Grants in the amount of $5000 per year have been awarded to four to six athletes
annually since the program's inception. The driving factor in the creation of this program was the goal of
improving the state of long distance running in the United States.
The RRCA is now accepting applications for our 2011-12 Roads Scholar class. The deadline for applying is
Sunday, April 30, 2011. More information about the program along with the application can be found online at: www.rrca.org/programs/roads-scholars/
The grant program is directed towards runners who:
a) are U.S. citizens
b) have recently graduated from college
c) plan to pursue elite distance running as a career
d) and expect to earn less than $30,000 from all sources during the calendar year.
The program is 100% supported by contributions from events, clubs and individual donors. To learn more

Fastest Qualified Runners Get Early Entry for 2012 Boston Marathon
B.A.A. also sets new, faster qualifying times for 2013 Boston Marathon
BOSTON - (February 16, 2011) - The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced a change in
its registration process for the Boston Marathon, allowing the fastest qualifiers to enter the earliest and
with a rolling admission system while also offering all eligible runners an increased registration period. The
changes in registration are a response by the B.A.A. to greater than ever demand by runners to gain entry
into the Boston Marathon and culminate more than three months of analysis, including input from the
running industry. Rather than accepting runners who have met the qualifying standards on a first come,
first served approach, a more systematic, performance-based process will be employed.
2012 Boston Marathon
For the 2012 Boston Marathon, registration will extend for two weeks, beginning on Monday, September
12 and continuing until Friday, September 23. The qualifying times for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not
change from recent past years since the standards had been previously announced and have been in
effect since last September. However, the new registration process addresses the increased demand
among qualified runners to participate in the Boston Marathon and will accommodate those who are the
fastest qualifiers first.
Registration will occur on a "rolling admission" schedule until the maximum field size is reached, beginning
with the fastest qualifiers. On the first day of registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon, those who are
eligible for entry by having met the qualifying standards for their age and gender group by 20 minutes or
more will be able to enter on the first day of registration (September 12). On the third day (September
14), registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by 10 minutes or more. On
the fifth day (September 16), registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by
five minutes or more. During this first week of registration, applicants will be notified as they are accepted
and their qualifying performance verified.
If the field size is not reached after the first week and additional space remains, then registration will open
to all qualifiers at the beginning of Week Two (September 19) and those who have met the qualifying
standards by any amount of time will be able to apply for entry. The application process will remain open
for the entire week, closing on September 23. At the conclusion of Week Two, those who are the fastest
among the pool of applicants in their age and gender will be accepted. Accepted athletes will be notified
on September 28.
If space remains available after this two week process, registration will remain open to any qualifier on a
first come, first served basis until the maximum field size is reached.
The field size for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not represent a significant increase from the most recent
past years.
Registration Process for the 2012 Boston Marathon
First Week
Day 1 (Sept 12) - Qualifiers who have met their age / gender qualifying times by 20 minutes, 00 seconds
or faster may apply
Day 3 (Sept 14) - 10 minutes, 00 seconds or faster
Day 5 (Sept 16) - 5 minutes, 00 seconds or faster
Second Week
Day 8 (Sept 19) - Qualifiers who have met their age / gender qualifying times by any amount of time,
including qualifiers who could have registered in Week One.
Day 12 (Sept 23) - Registration closes for qualified applicants
September 28 - Qualifiers from entry during second week of registration are notified of their acceptance.
If the field is not filled at the conclusion of the two weeks, then registration will remain open and qualifiers
will be accepted on a first come, first served basis until the maximum field size is reached.
2013 Boston Marathon
For the 2013 Boston Marathon, in addition to the new "rolling admission" process for registration which
will be in effect for the 2012 Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. will adjust the qualifying times by lowering
them by five minutes from the times which have been in effect in recent past years. The adjusted
qualifying times will go into effect on September 24, 2011, and are as follows:
Age Group - MEN / WOMEN
18-34 - 3:05:00 / 3:35:00
35-39 - 3:10:00 / 3:40:00
40-44 - 3:15:00 / 3:45:00
45-49 - 3:25:00 / 3:55:00
50-54 - 3:30:00 / 4:00:00
55-59 - 3:40:00 / 4:10:00
60-64 - 3:55:00 / 4:25:00
65-69 - 4:10:00 / 4:40:00
70-74 - 4:25:00 / 4:55:00
75-79 - 4:40:00 / 5:10:00
80 and older 4:55:00 / 5:25:00
Registration for the 2013 Boston Marathon will begin on Monday, September 10, 2012.
"As the number of qualified runners has increased combined with greater demand to run the Boston
Marathon, our new registration process enables those who qualify by the greatest amount of time to have
the longest period to enter," said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director. "Our new registration process
takes into consideration the many comments we received from runners this past fall and winter, most of
whom urged the B.A.A. to institute a system which recognizes athletic performance above all else."
Additionally, to recognize and to encourage longtime Boston Marathon entrants, the B.A.A. will allow those
who have met the qualifying times and who have finished the last ten consecutive Boston Marathons to
enter anytime during the registration period. Currently, there are approximately 500 runners who have
run 10 or more consecutive Boston Marathons.
The B.A.A. last adjusted the qualifying times for the 2003 Boston Marathon, relaxing times for runners
who were 55 years old and older. The last time the qualifying times were made more stringent was for the
1980 Boston Marathon.
The 2011 Boston Marathon reached its maximum field size of qualifiers faster than any previous year
when qualifiers rushed to fill the race and the qualified field closed in eight hours, three minutes.

Newspaper running coverage in south carolina
Now only 2 newspapers have regular scheduled coverage of running events in South Carolina. The
Greenville News and The State. Unfortunately the Charleston Post-Courier has eliminated its weekly running
coverage, and The State has now reduced their coverage to once per month.
The Greenville News has now gone to a subscription based service. You can read the first line of any
story going to www.Greenvilleonline.com and clicking on sports, then scroll down to the Running section.
Mike Foley covers the upstate events and runners. If you want to read more, you must subscribe.
The second Thursday of each month you can check The State (Columbia, SC) by going to
www.TheState.Com and clicking on sports, then you have to search under local events for a headline pertaining
to running. Larry Hamilton covers all the runs held during the previous month in South Carolina.
David Quick at the Post and Courier now has a regularly blog on the Post and Courier newspaper site;
check it out at www.postandcourier.com/blogs/running_blog/
If you know of any other SC newspapers with regular running coverage, please send me the information
to include. [email protected]. Thanks, Cedric.

Hi, Cedric. Sure, I‟ll take another free disc on the races. BTW, I‟ve just had
bilateral cataract surgery, too, which should improve my vision so that I won‟t have
to wear glasses. Not happened yet, but it‟s been less than a month. I learned to
wear a hat many years ago, after getting sunburned on top of my bald head, but I
don‟t have to wear sunglasses any more. Neither do you. Hey, we‟ve already had
cataracts.
Have a great day!

Cedric,
Greetings from Methuen, Massachusetts. Great work again. I think that the
Palmetto Half Marathon should have been around 23rd or 24th largest race in S.C. (688
finishers).
I'll be in S.C. for 3 weeks this late March/April on Fripp Island and plan to
run the largest Cooper River Bridge Run, the littlest Kings Mtn. Half Marathon, and
the Palmetto Halfer in Columbia. Unfortunately we leave JUST before the ifiveK.
Sorry to hear about your "sun" problems. Will you be selling the book at the
Bridge Run????
I finished 2010 tonight with 153 races. I ran in 156 in 2009 (getting older).
If you know of any races between March 31 and April 19 (other than April 2, 9, 16 all Saturdays) please let me know.
Thank YOU ... and Happy New Year.

Cedric, I thought you may want to note that some of the races in Columbia are now putting
chips on walkers (basically anyone who signs up for the race), so this inflates the
number of finishers and the actual "size" of the race. It's just something to note. Not
sure if it's a trend that others will follow...

Jeanna,
Glad to add you to the list.
I‟ve attached the latest Gazette.
Also, I noticed the trend of timing walkers and wrote about it in RUNNING JOURNAL back in
2006. I‟ve attached a Word copy of the article.
I think timing the walkers is a good idea – size matters and advertisers and newspapers
like to print big numbers so the larger a race is – even including walkers is the number
they care about. It may not be the purist way to look at things, but as I‟ve gotten
older I try to look at both sides of an argument and try to go with whatever makes the
sport look bigger and better.

If that's the case, though, races like mine (Providence Heart & Sole) that doesn't chip
the walkers but lists them separately, doesn't get "credit" for their true size. I have
about 1,000 walkers and 500 runners each year now, but the only "true" numbers that show
up in race results are those participants who are timed.
I always publish a list of registered walkers in my event just so they don't feel like
second-class citizens, but they're not considered part of the race results by the race
management company. We've never timed walkers because we don't want them to feel that
their time is important, and we therefore don't give out awards to walkers based on their
time. We do random drawings specifically for walkers so they have equal chances to win
prizes like the runners who receive race awards. We feel that participation is
what's important, not how fast they are.
Of course, my race is women's only and we cater to the athlete and non-athlete, wanting
to give women a safe environment to exercise. We're a little different that way, but
just so you know...Looks like we still hold the title of SC's only female road race, but
with the proliferation of races in the state, we may not hold that distinction for long!

Jeanna,
This is a new system – in fact the Bridge Run was the first major race to use it.
The computer chip is built into the back of the number.
shoe.
No separate chip to tie into a
Since I ran the Bridge Run, I can testify that it was really nice not to have to worry
about putting on a number and then remembering to also put on the D chip (which the
Bridge Run has used in the past).
I‟ve cut and pasted the information (from my Gazette) that was in David Quick‟s Post and
Courier Newspaper blog about it when the adopted it.
The Cooper River Bridge Run will be using a timing device that is attached to the inside of bib for this year's race, which is
March 27 (week earlier than usual because of Easter).
Today I went by the Bridge Run office, located near the Bi-Lo at Shelmore in Mount Pleasant, to check it out and take
some pics.
Assistant Race Director Tami Varn Bourne says the switch has many benefits:
1. No more fuss with a D-tag.
2. Even better accuracy because some runners damage the chip in the process of folding it.
3. More people will be counted because some walkers C-O-U-L-D C-A-R-E L-E-S-S about putting a chip on their shoe.
As a result, hundreds of them are not counted.
"We think our finisher number will go up," says Bourne.
Here's what it looks like:
On the front, just plain old number, but ...
on the back, all you need to be timed and counted.
The only downside I see is in all caps:
DO NOT FOLD. DO NOT FOLD. DO NOT FOLD.
For those of us who find it annoying for a bib to blowing around on your singlet on the bridge - myself included - the chip
on the back will limit folding or scrunching up the bib. No big deal really. But I'm a runner, so I have to complain about
something.

Jeanna,
I think yours is a great race. From a P.R. point of view I wish you would time all the
participants, but of course that is your decision. I don‟t think the walkers would feel
pressured to run (I know they don‟t in the Bridge Run) and I think you would find the
same to be true.
The thing that really makes it easy is the new „number in the bib chip timing‟. At the
Bridge Run in 2010 they used it for the first time – so if the participant remembers to
put on their number, they get a place and a time. I think this is the future of timing
and hope all the races will use it someday. Of course that is just my opinion.
Thanks for your thoughts on the topic and keep up the good work with your race.

SC Race History CD
1-5-2011,
Cedric,
Seasons Greetings to you and Kathy! Thanks very much for sending me the SC race file.
I've already looked at some of it (looking for my name of course), and it is really
addictive. I congratulate you on an amazing accomplishment - recognizing that it is a
work still in progress.
We have the boys home with us for a couple more days and I'll have more time to look
at the disk more later. I did notice a couple of things. I couldn't get the Carolina
Marathon races to open except for the summary of winner names and times that was
first on the list.
OF COURSE, any problems like that are related I'm sure to my ignorance of my
computer's rather significant capabilities. A msg. came up that the file had been
damaged and couldn't be opened. I tried a few different buttons, but no luck so far.
Once I get the disk to open up and reveal itself, I have my own personal memory
problem when I try to do it again that it's like I'm starting over again randomly
pushing keys in random patterns trying different interpretations. I'll get better.
I loved looking at the names of the Big Dogs like the Schlau's, Nancy Grayson, et.
al. I ran in a race with Olga Appell and another with Joan B. Samuelson. Many others
I got to know personally through their running in the Gov's Cup and other Midlands
races - and eventually getting to write about them. I am particularly awed at seeing
names of guys who are still running and were 65-70 back when I was beginning in the
1970's-80's. I loved those old folks and still do - especially now that
I definitely am one.
Now that I can sort of see where there are missing parts, I may be able to again
search and see if I can find some stuff that you maybe can use. Unfortunately, most
all that stuff is stored in Columbia because we live in a very tiny little house here
in Asheville.
More later. Thanks again!

Hi Cedric... Joanie Mulvihill is a friend of mine and always forwards me your gazette,

Take a look at Run for Adela, a 5k on Sullivan's Island. The inaugural race was
April 9 and had over 700 participants.... really amazing for a 1st race!! The race
supports the newly founded Adela Holmes Cook Foundation for local charities and honors
the daughter of a close friend of mine, also a runner. This young girl,18, was killed in
an accident while on spring break in the Bahamas, April 10, 2009. She was to attend USC
after graduating from Bishop England High School. She ran the Bridge Run every year and
was an extremely sweet, lovely girl.
The race is already being organized for this year and we're predicting a huge turnout
again. Thank you for all you do for our running community!!

Race Disk
Hi Cedric,
Thanks for the Race Disk, it will come in handy planning which races to do this year.
So many races... only two feet!
Resolution Run Chas took another hit this year, down over 50% from 378 last year
to the 184 listed finishers. Too bad. These people seem to be trying hard to have
a good race but keep having problems. Last year the results were delayed and
people stood around in a cold wind coming off the Ashley River. This year it was
even worse. Though not as cold it was windy, chilly, and the results were delayed
so long most people left before the awards. I also believe moving the race away
from the 1st has hurt them. After this years mess and the fact that next year's race
will be on the 7th, I don't expect to see the attendance recover. Maybe they should
call it the "Better Late Than Never Race".
Looks like a big mess in Spartanburg at the Grasshopper.
on their website:
Here's what they posted
Thanks to everyone who came out and ran the race!
Unfortunately, we had some trouble with the results. Once those issues are worked
out, results will be posted here. If you placed top-3 overall, masters, grandmasters, or in your age group, your
award will be mailed to you. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Let's hope this is not an omen of races to come!
Have a good day!

Subject: FW: Race results
Hi Cedric,
I have found results for several races that I did not see on the disk. It is possible, however, that I
overlooked them as I was going by the folders that are dated by year.
Attached you will find three files containing results of the 1994 Race for the Grasshopper, 1997 Improve
Your Heart 5K, and the 1998 Andrew Jackson 10K. I scanned and attempted to convert the files to Word
format, but I do not have Word. I use OpenOffice instead. In the event the conversion corrupted the files
I have also attached the PDF of the scanned results for comparison purposes. If you would rather
have paper copies let me know, and I will mail them to you.
The 1994 Grasshopper was the year where a portion of the course was covered in a sheet of ice, so the
Spartanburg Running Club hastily laid out a change to the course and measured it prior to the race. It
was not certified, but it was run by quite a few hearty souls and should be worthy of inclusion.
I am not sure where the 1997 Improve Your Heart 5K was held, but based on some of the names in the
results I suspect it was either in Rock Hill, Fort Mill or Lancaster. Perhaps you can determine the location
based upon the certification number listed on the results.
Not intending to create controversy, but the results for the 1998 Andrew Jackson 10K attached are in
conflict with those you have on the disk. The copy included here is dated 01/17/1998, which was a
Saturday. The results for the Andrew Jackson 10k Lancaster included on the disk are dated January 23,
1998, which was a Friday. Also I have the bib number that I wore in that race and on the back I
had inscribed "Andrew Jackson 10K 01/17/98 44:17" which matches the results I have attached. January
23 fell on a Saturday in 1999, so perhaps the list on the disk is just dated incorrectly. The plot thickens as
I see there are results on the disk for 1999, but they are dated January 17th which was a Sunday. I do
not have the solution, but something is amiss. Hopefully you can sort it out.
The results I have located go back to 1993 or 1994. I think I have another collection of results in a box
somewhere that would be even older, but I have yet to locate them. When I do find them I will send you
copies of any that are missing from the disk.
Hope this helps,
Grant

I had the stitches taken out of my ear on Monday and I‟m starting to run again (after missing a
week due to the six and a half inches of snow and ice we had on the ground up here the week
before the surgery and then the recovery from the surgery, so no we will not be coming to
Charlie Post. Wish we could.
The Doctor said he got all the cancer, but the ear is still inflamed a little, so I‟m not doing much
until it is totally healed. There is race up here on February 5th (the Hunger Run) and Kathy and I
are signed up for it. She only can walk about 2 miles (on her good days now) due to her M.S.
but wants to try to walk the 5k.
My running has gotten pathetic also. I don‟t know of any good programs for us old folks (I‟ll be
64 on my next birthday), I just try to run every other day and have been getting less than 20
miles per week. I really want to lose some weight and run an 8 minute pace at the Bridge Run
this year, but I think that is more dream and hope than reality or likely.
The book is supposed to come on about the first of March. It is being published by Evening
Post books in Charleston and they say they want to do a lot of publicity. I told them I‟d do book
signings the Thursday and Friday afternoons before the Bridge Run at the Expo. They should
have ads in the newspaper etc. before then. We‟ll see. I told them to name the book
CHARLESTON‟S COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN so it would come up when people Google
Charleston or Cooper River Bridge Run. They were trying to change it to HISTORY OF THE
BRIDGE RUN, which I didn‟t like. Don‟t know what will happen there.
If you buy a copy of the book (at the Expo or before or after) be sure to get me to sign it for
you. I remember running a lot of races against you, and I think I usually got you, but I‟d have to
check to be sure.
Kathy and I hope to see you and Mary Frances at the Bridge Run this year.

Hi Cedric and Kathy. I really enjoy the Runners Gazette and look forward to receiving it. Sorry to hear
about your bout with skin cancer and hope things turn out well. I too have sun spots from running, going
to the beach, working it the yard, etc., over the years without sunscreen or a hat. So far I haven't had any
skin cancer issues. I see a dermatologist annually for a total body exam for skin issues plus my primary
care doc keeps close tabs on my skin (especially my bald head).
I am 65 (66 in March) and my running has gotten pretty pathetic. I can't get the motivation to run hard
anymore. Of course age has a lot to do with that. Sometimes I reminisce to the 1980s hen I was running
pretty good. Do you have any running training programs that are designed for my runners of my age?
Mary Frances had to give up running a number of years ago because of back and foot problems. Also, I
would definitely be interested in your Bridge Run book. Let me know how to get it when it is
published. Will you be at Charlie Post this Saturday? I may try to run it. Haven't decided yet

SC records alert
Hey Bill-For next year, someone needs to nominate Mimi Sturgell for ROY. She is 60 years old
and ran the Kiawah half marathon in 1:38:27 (89% age graded) and just did the Charlie
Post 15K in 1:09:50 (86% age graded). By age-grading she is a national class athlete
and far exceeds what the rest of us in the age group in SC can do.
Both these performances are (or should be) new state records, by about 13 minutes for
the half marathon and 9 minutes for the 15K. Not sure if anyone has turned in
paperwork--or even knows about it, but these records belong in the books.

Cedric,
Too bad those despicable race result thieves hit Claude's house.
Based upon the overall winners' times you listed, I see that the Andrew Jackson 10K
results in the 'SC Races 1998' folder must be from the 1993 race. The results were
incorrectly dated 1998. They are also in the 'SC Races 1993' folder.
I had to take a break from looking for more results. Other things in life just seem to
get in the way sometimes. We have a new grandson as of the 16th. We've been kept busy
lending a hand on the homefront. Hopefully I will get back to the search soon, and will
certainly let you know if I run across any other results for you.

Grant,
I think this is as much info on Andrew Jackson as I‟ll be able to get. Claude Sinclair
told me there had been a break in at his house (didn‟t say when) and a lot of his old
paper results were gone (bet the burglars were surprised and disappointed and probably
just through the boxes of them away).
If you look in the database disk you can find these results (I didn‟t realize I had them)
by year. I‟ve created an Andrew Jackson folder for future disks.
Here is the (I hope) correct winners list.

Congratulations Cedric. You are on your way. Let me know where I can get it. Would
think it will be in the local Charleston book stores. You can probably get a book
signing going at Waldon Books at Charleston Place. I arranged one for Jill Pellerin.
She is due to come back on the 19th for her 3rd signing. They take a percentage of
the profits.
Think the week of the Bridge run would be good & also at the Expo. I also got
her on the local TV morning show. Let me know if you are interested, so I can help
with names & numbers. Love the David Quick blog! Best to Kathy.

Re: Cooper River Bridge Run book information
Hi Cedric: Congratulations on finishing the book. I'm looking forward to buying it. I
was checking my previous runs there. I ran it from 1985 to 2002. I did miss 1999. What
made that bad was I drove there and had a free home just a short distance from
start. Was very sick & disappointed on race day.
Injuries have really slowed me since then. After running the Rocket City Marathon for
the first 27 years, I had to drop out on number 28 with back problems. Very little
competing since, although I have entered some South Carolina Senior games and
USATF 400M/800M/1500M events. The SC Senior Sports Classic will be held May 18May 21 in Florence, SC. Open to all SC residents over 50 yrs.of age. Many different
events besides running. Check out their website scseniorgames.com if interested. Must
register by April 1.
This past year at Myrtle Beach I was fortunate to run a 1500M race with Zola
Budd. Only four entrants; two young guys, Zola, and one ole guy. I was near her as she
finished, but unfortunately I had over 400M to run. A very nice lady and I enjoyed
talking with her, even though I didn't know who she was until I saw the results a day
later.

Chuck,
Since you are the CRC rep and in on things I know you are the man to ask. I‟ve been
getting asked a lot how awards will be determined since the Bridge Run is using a wave
start this year.
Can you fill me in on how the awards timing will be done so I can put it in the next SC
Runner‟s Gazette (which will come out March 1st)?
If chip timing is used then the awards list could not be made up until the last finisher
from the last wave had crossed the finish since that person could potentially be an award
winner.
Am I wrong about this?
People keep asking me and I don‟t know how it will work.
I thought if you would explain to me how it is done, then I could include it in the
Gazette and explain to people when they ask me how it works.
Of course, if real gun time is used, there is no problem since the actual finish order is
used and the actual winners get the awards.
Thanks for helping me understand this.

about the sc runners’ gazette
The Gazette is a bi-monthly, electronic magazine designed for the runners of South
Carolina (and any other interested runner) with information about every race in South
Carolina. It also contains anything else which the editor thinks might be of interest to
runners.
Contributions, articles, e-mails, whatever, are welcome – preferably in Word
format. The Gazette is all compiled into a gigantic Word document then converted to PDF
before being e-mailed.
About the Editor. I minored in journalism in college. I was a correspondent for
Running Times and for Racing South magazines. I was asked to become a contributor and
later a monthly columnist for CAROLINA RUNNER and am a contributing editor to RUNNING
JOURNAL. I am a past editor and gave the name the LOW COUNTRY RUNNER to the newsletter
of the Charleston Running Club and a past editor of the Rock Hill Striders newsletter. I
was elected to the South Carolina Road Runners Club Hall of Fame in 1992 and to the
Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame in 2002.
The first issue of the SC Runners‟ Gazette was January-February 2005. I‟ve saved
every issue on a CD-R, so in the unlikely event you want one of them just let me know. I
wonder if anyone will even read this far into this Gazette, and would be happy to send
out old issues. I respond to every e-mail. If you wish to be deleted from the mailing

"Charleston's Cooper River Bridge Run," a book by Cedric Jaggers, set to be published on March 7.
Posted by david quick at 2/8/2011 2:27 PM EST on Post and Courier
Cedric Jaggers, the authority on the Cooper River Bridge Run and running in South Carolina, didn't waste a moment of
"retirement" from his real job at the Social Security Administration before setting off on project to write a book about the
Bridge Run.
After all, most of the work was already done over 34 years of meticulous record-keeping. It was his book to write, for sure.
He is working with Evening Post Books, a subsidiary of the Evening Post Publishing Co (publishers of The Post and Courier),
on the book. By doing so, he got access to the P&C's treasure trove of photos.
The first official word of the book's publication appeared recently on EPB's website, EveningPostBooks.com.
They haven't finalized a price for the book, but they are looking at the $20 range.
You'll hear more in the coming weeks.
Cedric, circa 1987.
Cedric has a tradition of getting people to "Tell Me About Your Bridge Run" after every race. Here he gets
Mike Chodnicki, another Charleston running legend, to tell all.

Here it is ... coming to a bookstore soon!
Hey, look, there I am!
Here's the official press release from Evening Post Books. I received it 10 minutes ago. Szzzzl!
For Immediate Release
Evening Post Books Releases
Charleston’s Cooper River Bridge Run
Local runner Cedric Jaggers tells the complete history of the 33 year old race
CHARLESTON, S.C. – FEBRUARY 2011 – One picture says it all about Cedric and Kathy Jaggers’ love of Charleston’s Cooper River Bridge
Run.
They are running together across the old bridge — before the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge was built — shortly after she was diagnosed with
multiple sclerosis. They are smiling, enjoying another of their favorite days of the year.
Nobody cares more about Charleston’s Cooper River Bridge run than Cedric Jaggers. He has
been inducted into the event’s hall of fame for his determined efforts to document the race every year and keep a record of the results,
beginning with a box of newspaper clippings and his newsletter, the Low Country Runner.
Jaggers’ new book, Charleston’s Cooper River Bridge Run, will be published this March by
Evening Post Books, a division of Evening Post Publishing.
Jaggers has run in every race except the first one in 1978 — he broke his leg playing soccer that year — and this book details his own decline
from a runner who broke the 40-minute barrier to one just happy to participate. His wife, Kathy, may be a more determined runner.
She ended up in the medical tent at the end of the race more than once, yet in 1998 she won third place Grand Master prize money the first
year it was offered.
―I never thought of myself as an historian,‖ Jaggers says, ―only as a runner. My highest overall finish in any Bridge Run was 60th and my
highest age group placement was third. But I kept up with the race every year and added another paragraph or two summarizing each race.‖
It is those 33 years of observing and running that make Charleston’s Cooper River Bridge Run such a unique book. Nobody has a better
perspective or more information.
The book contains the names of every prizewinner ever recognized in the race. Jaggers says
people used to call and ask him to look up a time and place that they ran sometime in the
mid-’90s. Impossible, he would explain. By that time the race had grown too big — there were more than a thousand finishers every year after
the first race — and the record keeping had not yet been computerized.
With this book, runners can look up their own prize-winning times.
In 1993 race director Benita Schlau asked Jaggers to write a history of the race for the Bridge
Run Committee. He included photocopies of results from 1978 to 1987 that the committee did not have.
Jaggers was inducted into the Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame in 2002.
―When I consider the great runners and contributors to the race, I feel inadequate and unworthy of the honor,‖ he says, ―but it is one I really
appreciate.‖
Jaggers loves the Bridge Run and brags on its organization and accomplishments, including:
• The BR was an early adopter of timing every runner and mailing the race results.
• The BR was an early adopter of using a certified course to ensure an accurate race distance.
• The BR was a leader in presenting Masters Division and then Grand Masters Division awards.
• The BR was an early adopter of presenting proportionately deeper age group awards in the
larger age groups.
―A race that grows from 766 finishers in 1978 to 33,057 finishers in 2010 is obviously doing a lot of things right,‖ Jaggers says. ―And good races
do not happen by accident but due to the hard work of a lot of people, and I wish I could thank them all. I love the Expo. I love the race. I love
the post-race crowd in Marion Square waiting for or ignoring the awards ceremony. I love it all. So now here is my chance to tell you, not about
my Bridge Run, but about everybody’s Cooper River Bridge Run.‖
The book will be available mid-March at www.EveningPostBooks.com, inside Post-Courier
building at 134 Columbus Street in Charleston and in local book stores. The price is $24.95.
