Dear friends,
As gala co-chairs, it is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to the

desire to become the quality leader and transform the delivery of

principals of the Virginia Mason Production System in combination
with the voice of the patient are being used to design our new
surgical suites.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you—board members,

virginia mason
Since opening its doors
as the first medical
group practice in the
Pacific Northwest,
Virginia Mason remains
a force in the innovation of health care
delivery. The soul of
Virginia Mason is an
integrated approach to
healing based on the
collaboration of providers who are among the most talented and
accomplished in health care today.
In 2002, Virginia Mason took a pioneering role in advancing patient
care by fully implementing a rigorous new management approach:
the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS). VMPS is used to
make real and measurable improvements in safety, quality, service
and staff satisfaction. This method identifies and eliminates waste
and inefficiency in the numerous processes that are part of any
health care experience. By streamlining the repetitive and lowtouch aspects of care delivery, staff are freed to spend more time
talking with, listening to and treating patients. The success of
VMPS is apparent across the medical center every day, and is a
testament to our thriving culture of improvement.
For helping us in our quest to be the Quality Leader and transform
health care, we have many to thank: our team members, for their
nimble creativity and total commitment to our patients; our
patients, for inspiring us to be the best caregivers we can be; and
our friends and donors, whose gifts of time, talent and financial
support touch every patient in our care.

Kim Holcomb began reporting for Evening
Magazine in April 2008.
Her career started more than a decade ago,
when she made a solitary road trip up the West
Coast in search of her first job. She visited every
small market along the way and was hired at
her last stop in Yakima, WA. She was a “one
man band” news reporter, shooting, writing,
and editing her own stories. For minimum wage.
And she loved every second.
Kim moved on to reporting and anchoring jobs in Boise, ID, Las
Vegas, NV, and Phoenix, AZ, where she was honored with the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for writing. She moved to Seattle
in 2006, working as a general assignment reporter for KING 5
before joining Evening Magazine.
Kim has a degree in political science from the University of
California, Riverside, and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism
from Boston University. She spent a year working as a visiting
professor at UNLV.
Kim couldn’t live without music, movies, good conversation, vacations to the coast, occasional karaoke, and strong coffee. She has
dozens of books percolating inside her head and hopes to write one
down someday. She’s married to NWCN Evening Anchor Rob Piercy,
and they are the proud parents of a son and daughter.

s p o t lig h t on giving
The Surgical Suites on Level 3
of the Floyd & Delores Jones
Pavilion will directly reflect
Virginia Mason’s desire to
become the quality leader
and transform the delivery of
health care. The new Surgical
Suites will create an exceptional patient and visitor
experience, improving both
patient and family involvement in surgical preparation and
recovery. By incorporating the principles of the Virginia Mason
Production System (VMPS), Virginia Mason is committed to continuous improvement and the creation of patient-centered health
care by improving quality and safety and removing waste.
Patient privacy and comfort is key to the new design. Six private
bays where patients prepare for their surgery allow family members to stay with their loved one until traveling to the operating
room for surgery. Family members are able to access real-time
information about their loved ones through flat screen displays,
and when surgery is complete the family is connected with the
surgeon in a private consult room for an update on their loved one.
Above all, the voice of the patient was the most influential, and is
distinctly echoed in specific design and process features throughout the Suite.
