he secret of Griffin and Spalding is

The Bailey-Tebault House, at 633 Meriwether St., was built by
David Jackson Bailey and his wife, Susan Mary Grantland. Construction began in 1859 and was completed in 1862. The house is

Spalding Regional Hospital has been serving the health-care needs of the community for more than 100 years.
S
erving patients
is the top priority
at Spalding Regional
Hospital, and the hospital
has done so for Griffin
and Spalding County for
over a century.
The 160-bed, acute-care hospital is
located right in Griffin, and is part of
Spalding Health, an expanded health
system that also includes Sylvan
Grove Hospital in Jackson and seven
outpatient facilities and physician
offices in the area.
Fully accredited by the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (the
leading accreditor of all health care
organizations in the U.S.), Spalding
Regional earned national recognition
in 2014 from this organization as a
“Top Performer” hospital in the U.S.
Medical specialties include cardiac
ser vices, including inter ventional
cardiology; Primar y Stroke Center;
Orthopedic and Joint Health; and
Women’s Ser vices. The hospital also
operates several specialized outpatient
facilities: Center for Rehabilitation;
Center for Sleep Medicine, and an
award-winning Center for Wound
Healing and Hyperbaric medicine.
Recently in 2014, the hospital
embarked on two additional patient
ser vices, a new Breast Care Program
to better provide women the benefits
from a multidisciplinar y approach
to breast health and disease, with
specialists for breast surger y and
reconstruction, diagnostic radiology,
radiation and medical oncology,
pathology and also the guidance and
support of a new nurse navigator.
The second ser vice is a new
Oncology Navigator to provide a

patients and their families. Carla
Adams is the hospital’s new oncology
navigator, a registered nurse specially
trained to assist in all aspects of
the patient care experience — from
diagnosis through the successful
completion of treatment.
The hospital’s Outpatient Ser vices
Center houses a magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) unit, 64-slice CT
scanner and the area’s only PET-CT
scanner. Radiology ser vices at
Spalding Regional are provided 24
hours a day, seven days a week. The
Outpatient Ser vices Center also
houses the hospital’s ambulator y
ser vices unit for outpatient surgeries
as well as specialized ser vices such as
chemotherapy and endoscopy.

Emergency Medical Services
Spalding Regional ser ves the
emergent needs of the community
through its recently expanded
Emergency Department. The new
ER was designed to respond to an
increasing patient demand, almost
doubling in size and providing some of
the latest technologies to care for the
more than 54,000 emergency patients
seeking treatment annually.
The new Emergency Department
includes an increased number of
private medical exam rooms as well
as specialized trauma and critical
care rooms; computerized records for
safe, accurate charting; direct access
to radiology; and specialized areas
for issues such as decontamination
and psychiatric care. The Emergency
Department also includes a “Fast
Track” care area for non-emergency
issues.
The hospital also operates Spalding
County’s award winning Emergency
Medical Ser vice (EMS) with a staff
of paramedics and EMTs, and a fleet
of ambulances. In 2014 Spalding
Regional’s EMS was named EMS
Ser vice of the Year from the Georgia
Association of EMS. The department
responds to more than 15,000 calls
annually from Spalding County and
provides backup ser vice for Butts,
Lamar, Pike and Henr y counties.
The EMS fleet includes vehicles
specifically designed for Spalding
Regional Hospital’s Emergency
Ser vices. The ambulances feature
increased room for the paramedics and
the patient, and include some of the
latest technology, allowing for faster
and better treatment of patients. This
includes the first use of Telemedicine
in the region, incorporating webcam
capability to allow for constant
communications enroute to the
hospital between the paramedic,
physician and patient. The units are
also equipped with mobile hotspots
for onboard Internet access, specially
designed Lifepack 15 advanced 12-lead
EKG cardiac monitors, and transport
ventilators.
For the non-emergency patient,
Spalding Regional also recently added
a new online “ER Express” ser vice,
allowing non-emergency consumers
to schedule a time in the hospital’s ER
schedule, while waiting in the comfort
of their own homes.
Spalding Regional’s ER Express
ser vice allows non-emergency patients
to simply visit the hospital website
home page, click on the ER Express
button and choose their time of arrival.
The patient simply arrives at that time
and is seen by a health professional
within 15 minutes.
“We know people want more
convenience and predictability in the
ER experience,” explained John Quinn,
chief executive officer. “With this
ser vice, users enjoy the convenience
of choosing both where they wait and
a projected time to see a health-care
professional in our emergency room.”

Griffin Region College and Career Academy ready to launch
I
n early 2013, the GriffinSpalding Board of
Education established the
Griffin Region College and
Career Academy (GRCCA)
Steering Committee, made up
of more than I00 leaders from
businesses, public schools
and colleges serving Spalding,
Butts and Pike counties.
These volunteers followed
a strategic planning process
already used by many
college and career academy
partnerships in Georgia.
Planners met monthly for
20 months, established
working groups, conducted
an online employer needs
assessment and wrote a
Georgia Department of
Education charter application
and Technical College System
of Georgia (TCSG) grant
application.
Seventy-eight employers
completed the needs
assessment. A 319-page final
needs assessment report
was published in May 2014,
and the GRCCA charter and
memoranda of understanding
were approved and signed
locally by the school systems
in July and September 2014.
The state approved the charter
in December and the TCSG
approved a $2.1 million grant.
The needs assessment data
convinced planners that there
was sufficient economic and
academic need and interest
in the Griffin Region to justify
the effort of starting a college
and career academy charter
program.
Employers and other
economic data pointed to
the need for the following
pathways to be offered to high
school students in the region:
mechatronics, therapeutic
services, public health,
audio-video technology and
film, welding, law enforcement
services, teaching as a
profession, early childhood
care and education, food

The 78 employers who
responded to the needs
assessment currently employ
more than 10,400 workers, and
they are interested in filling
another 6,238 positions in five
years adding new jobs and
replacement jobs.
Forty-five percent of
employers plan to expand their
workforces. They specified
96 major job titles of concern
but 17 of those job titles were
labeled “Triple Threat Jobs”
because they fit all three
of these criteria: 1) the job
comprises 20 percent or more
of the employer’s workforce;
2) it is hard to hire and retain
workers because of required
skills; and 3) the employer
plans to hire more workers
within five years with this job
title.
Triple threat jobs are
currently filled by 1,344
employees working for 16
different employers (20 percent
of the respondent pool) and a
minimum of 632 new hires can
be generated by these jobs in
the next five years (41 percent
of all projected new hires).
All 17 jobs are included in
the pathways recommended
for GRCCA’s charter and all
pathways will include an option
of college dual enrollment
at one of three institutions:
Southern Crescent Technical
College, Gordon State College
or the Griffin campus of the
University of Georgia.
GRCCA is a vibrant
partnership. With charter
status, an autonomous
nonprofit governing board,
a dedicated facility, three
excellent college dual
enrollment partners and four
connected high schools in
three school systems, serving
more than 10,000 high school
students over the next five
years, GRCCA is poised to have
a dramatic impact on student
achievement and the economy
in and around Griffin.
Griffin Region College and

(GRCCA) met for orientation
and training on Nov. 7.
Representatives from
Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce Spalding, Butts and Pike
county school systems as well
as parents, college reps and
business leaders are part of the
founding board of directors. A
steering committee has worked
for 20 months preparing the
charter application for this
new educational program. The
first step of the plan is to seat a
founding board of directors.
The GRCCA is a non-profit
organization that has put forth
a charter application to provide
a program in 11 areas. They
are: mechatronics, therapeutic
services, public health,
audio-video technology and
film, welding, law enforcement
services, teaching as a
profession, early childhood care
and education, food products
and processing systems, aircraft
support and flight operations.
These areas came from
an extensive needs survey
of area businesses. Both the
landscape management and
food innovation and processing
programs will tie directly into
UGA-Griffin’s new programs
that are currently being
planned. GRCCA will open in
August 2016.

Gordon State offers a vibrant campus life

College is a residential state college
that offers baccalaureate as well as
associate-level degrees and so much more.
Bachelor’s degrees are available in
early childhood education, mathematics,
biology, history, English, nursing, health
services and informatics administration,
human services and management
and administration. Associate-level
concentrations of study are fully
transferable to other University System of
Georgia institutions.

Gordon State offers an intimate academic

Airport Road Park and Wyomia
Tyus Olympic Park, are two of the most
popular and most used parks in the area.
Airport Road Park features a unique
half-mile walking trail constructed of
about 7,000 recycled tires. The park also
provides a playground and commons
area for people to enjoy nature at its best.
Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park, named
for a local resident who was an Olympic
gold medalist and world-record holder
in track, features wooded landscaping
with a complex that holds soccer and

baseball fields, paved walking trail, a
quarter-mile rubber walking track with a
special-needs playground, a lake and two
picnic pavilions.
Three facilities have regulation indoor
basketball courts, and there are adult
softball fields, weight rooms, playground
equipment, restrooms and concession
stands at most of the recreational areas.
AMBUCS and Tyus parks are the sites of
regular season and year-end tournament
play for Griffin Youth Baseball.
Dundee Lake, on 184 acres, offers
peace and tranquility for the nature lover
of all ages, features fishing, a picnic
shelter, and restrooms.
The Park at Sixth has a pavilion,
which is available for private event rental,
hosts local concerts and the Flicks at 6th

Griffin’s City Park, convenient to the
downtown shopping/business area,
attracts residents and visitors alike as a
place to hold picnics, attend ball games
or meet for quick outdoor lunch. It is also
a popular as a location to take a pleasant
stroll on the tree-lined walking trail.
During the summer, the swimming
pool at City Park brings youngsters
and adults to swim or just soak up the
sun. City Park also hosts organized
leagues and casual pick-up games in the
Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce gymnasium as well as on the ball fields.
Skateboarders enjoy the Grind Skate
Park and there are also tennis courts and
playgrounds.
For local golfers, City Park offers
a challenging 18-hole golf course. For
a family outing at City Park, visit the
AMBUCS miniature 18-hole course.
Another local golf course, Cabin Creek,
offers 18 holes on rolling hills with
plenty of challenges. Also nearby are two
Cannongate Courses — one at Heron
Bay, the other at Sun City Peachtree.
The Cedars, The Pines, Raintree and
Morgan Dairy, and The Club at Shoal
Creek, are other 18-hole courses in
nearby counties.
Griffin and Spalding County provide
excellent access to outdoor recreation
areas. The Flint River is great for fishing
and boating along the western border of
the county, and local anglers make their
big catches at the City Reservoir or at
Still Branch Reservoir in nearby Pike
County.
For marksmen who want to hone
their skills, Cherokee Rose is a stateof-the-art sporting clays range and a
fully-automated course with exciting
targets for all shooters. “The Rose” is on
125 acres of towering pines and beautiful,
old hard hardwoods offering a shoot-off
arena with renovated stands. One is
covered for shooting in rain or shine,
while the other is in a well-landscaped
shoot-off area. Both are lighted for

Several natural outdoor settings with
an array of amenities are with a short
driving distance of Griffin. Callaway
Gardens, a 4,000-acre, world-renowned
resort, offers beautiful grounds in Pine
Mountain, Ga. Also in Pine Mountain,
more than 30 miles of hiking and
riding trails can be found at Franklin
D. Roosevelt State Park. Indian Springs
State Park and Jackson Lake provide
opportunities for fishing, camping,
swimming, and boating.
Arts & Culture
Griffin and Spalding County continues
growing their community for the arts,
from ballet to choral music, and from
drama to fine arts and crafts.
The Griffin Area Arts Alliance is an
umbrella organization for the arts. It
was a catalyst in restoring the 1,100-seat
Griffin Auditorium, which hosts many
performing groups as well as the Griffin

Festivities include a
downtown open house with
tasty treats such as hot cider
and popcorn along with crafts,
and of course, a visit from
Santa Claus.
The Griffin/Spalding
Chamber of Commerce
helps to get everyone in
the holiday spirit with its
annual Christmas Parade in
December. The streets are
filled with onlookers as the
parade participants proudly
maneuver their decorated
floats along the route. Bands
supply seasonal music while
many groups, organizations
and individuals add to this
festive activity. Santa provides
the finale to the delight of all
children.
Spalding County Parks
and Recreation holds a tree
lighting, entertainment,
games, and a visit from Santa
Claus at Airport Road Park to
help begin the holiday season.
History
Griffin and Spalding
County residents are proud
of the area’s rich and colorful
history that has played a
major role in the shaping of
Georgia.
Spalding County was
named for Thomas Spalding,
considered by many to be
Georgia’s Benjamin Franklin.
He was a prominent figure
in agriculture, politics,
and banking. His name
was immortalized in 1851
by awarding it to our
newly-formed county.
Prior to the founding of
Spalding County, Griffin was
established by Gen. Lewis
Lawrence Griffin when he
chose an ideal location for
a town along his Monroe
Railroad’s north-south route.
Although the major emphasis
eventually shifted instead to
the town of Terminus (later
called Martha’s Station and
finally renamed Atlanta) to
the north, the original plan’s
design was sound.
Perhaps one of Spalding
County’s most famous
residents was John Henry
“Doc” Holliday. Born in
Griffin in 1851, he was
baptized in the Presbyterian
Church in Griffin. After
receiving a degree from
Pennsylvania College of
Dental Surgery, he moved
back to Georgia and had
a successful practice in
downtown Griffin before
tuberculosis forced him to
move West. He died in 1887 in
Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
The original Spalding
County Courthouse, built in
1859, is still standing on the
southwest corner of Broad
and 5th streets. Though
it is no longer used as the
county seat of government,
the building is one of
Georgia’s few antebellum
courthouses. It is now home
to the University of Georgia’s
Extension Service’s local
offices.
All of Griffin and Spalding
County’s historic events did
not occur a century ago.
Twelve local community
heroes carried the Olympic
torch along the route
traversing Georgia and
Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce SUBMITTED
Spalding County leading up
to the 1996 Summer Olympic
Games in Atlanta. As an
integral part of the 1996
celebration, Griffin native
Wyomia Tyus, an Olympic
gold medalist in 1964 and
1968, was honored by having
the county’s newest park
named after her.
While Griffin and Spalding
County has a history of which
local residents are justifiably
proud, tomorrow’s history
is being written today and
is building on its successful
