You might not guess that Evanston Art Center (EAC) is 85-years young because
of our move this past spring into a new facility on Central Street in Evanston. We
are noticing amazing upticks in our school enrollment and exhibition offerings,
as well as our daily visitor drop-ins. Our newly designed building is highlighting
that art is integral to people of all ages in Evanston and in our surrounding
communities. We want you to be a part of this artistic revitalization.
Over 30,000 people from all walks of life, representing over 100 Illinois zip codes
used the Art Center this year alone. We are a vital step in the artistic process.
The Art Center closes the gap for schools that have had funding cut for the arts
by bringing our art programming to schools. We collaborate with numerous
schools from K through College to teach skills and provide exhibition space. We
provide need-based scholarships to Evanston-Skokie District 65 elementary
students every year, year-round. Our teen and adult programming is evolving and
includes expanded interdisciplinary opportunities such as our new Maker Lab,
where students can explore 3D arts, digital fabrication, technology and design.
Our faculty is top-notch and students of all ages and backgrounds wish to learn
at EAC. Every year, EAC provides those students in need with scholarships,
financial aid, and aides to assist those with disabilities. Our exhibition program
is exceptional, showing contemporary artists from around the world, as well as
student and faculty work. All of our exhibitions are free and open to the public to
enjoy.
We want the artistic experience at EAC to reach more people. We need your help.

DIGITAL MEDIA AND FABRICATION IN
EVANSTON ART CENTER’S NEW MAKER LAB
There’s been a lot of discussion in the last
few years around new relatively inexpensive
technologies and equipment that allows
people to fabricate and prototype their
own images and objects in materials like
acrylic, wood, paper, vinyl, and plastic. This
equipment is still a bit too expensive for the
average household to buy, but the days of
outsourcing a project to an expensive light
manufacturing company is coming to an
end. We are witnessing the beginning of a
new Do It Yourself (DIY) movement, one
that offers lay people opportunities to work
through concepts and ideas with tools that
were once out of reach. Today the consumer
can be designer as well as producer. Do It
Yourself “Maker Labs” have been springing up
all over the country in colleges, universities,
and community centers. Most of these spaces
offer drop-in times that give people basic
access to the software and equipment. They
host workshop tutorials and then a person is
able to schedule time to come in on their own.
What Makes us
Unique:
Although we support the idea of maker
spaces, we believe they do not fulfill the
amount of instruction and investigation
people truly need to make their ideas a
reality. As an arts organization, we also feel
that we should view these technologies as
artistic tools and as an art curriculum. Our
focus should be on art students and working
artists in the communities we serve. We
are asking ourselves What does a “maker
lab” look like for an arts organization who
offers over 100 youth and adult classes and
workshops in ceramics, drawing, painting,
jewelry, metalsmithing, figure sculpture, and
printmaking? What sets us apart is a rich
project-based curriculum led by an innovative
faculty that gives users a chance to not only
play, but investigate new ways of art making.
Just consider for a moment what a painting,
drawing, traditional print, piece of jewelry,
ceramic object etc. would look like engraved
into sheets of wood, clear acrylic, bright
vinyl, 3D printed plastics of all colors, or cut
out in beautiful papers? The Evanston Art
Center welcomes everyone to imagine what’s
possible in our maker lab.
DIGITAL MEDIA
AND FABRICATION
All digital classes include free monitored
studio time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays times are dependent upon class
offerings and determined after the start of
classes. In addition to courses people can
become authorized on the laser engraver for
$40 and have a chance to begin a project
under direct supervision. We charge $30 for
an hour on the laser engraver and $20 for 30
minutes.

make it possible to transform your pictures
into brilliant, dynamic works of art using
various digital photo techniques. Students

INTRODUCTION TO 3D PRINTING
EXPLORE THE EAC MAKER LAB

Maker Lab
Students will get an introduction to the
basics of 3D printing, also known as additive
manufacturing. We will look at online
programs for 3D modeling such as Tinkercad,
and the database at Thingiverse as a
jumping off point for students to design and
manufacture their own 3D creations. Students
will be encouraged to sketch, draw and create
prototypes for their own unique creations
geared towards using the 3D printer as an
artistic and creative tool. We will cover both
the possibilities and limitations of the process,
and learn the correct workflow for taking a
concept to completion through the printers
onsite. Prior experience with 3D printers is
not necessary, but some knowledge in 3D
software and some elements of the Adobe
suite will be beneficial for more complicated
creations.

Einstein By Design

Mixed Media Studio II
Using a Raspberry Pi-based system, you will
build your own computer. You will then learn to
code it yourself as you learn about computer
science applications ranging from hardware to
software development. Course material will be
covered using a hands-on approach that helps
participants to learn fundamental concepts
through practice. Camp participants enjoy oneon-one interaction with instructors in a small
class setting. Each child will take home their
own computer at the end of each session along
with any games or apps she or he develops.

PRODUCT DESIGN CHALLENGE 1.0 AGES 8-12
Einstein By Design
Maker Lab
In this exciting Intro to Product Design class,
participants will construct a functioning
prototype of a creation of their own design.
This class will serves as a great introduction to
the full resources of the Evanston Arts Center’e
new Maker Lab. Materials used in the class will
include: 3D printed plastics, textiles, microcontrollers,and other up-cycled art and design
materials. Participants will learn to approach
a problem from multiple perspectives, how to
frame a design challenge properly, prototype,
and iterate solutions while communicating their
ideas clearly in design reviews, reports, and
presentations. At the end of the term there will
be a design showcase in which participants will
present their prototypes before family, friends
and community members.

Using basic techniques such as the Sunny
16 Rule, learn how to read light and expose
your film properly with and without a light
meter. Through the use of a lighttight lab,
photosensitive resin coated paper, an enlarger
and chemicals, you will experience blank
pieces of paper come to life right before
your very eyes. Embrace the intimacy of the
moment, control of your artistic expression
and be a part of a historical process that laid
the groundwork for what photography has
become today. You have 24 to 36 frames to
work with. What will you create?

SMART PHONE STUDIO: THROUGH THE
LOOKING GLASS

Maker Lab
Augmented reality applications for
smartphones allow us to situate digital models
and images into real spaces. We can see these
images using only the cameras on our smart
phones. This technology is actually incredibly
simple to work with and opens our artistic
practices to a range of possibilities. Images
and sculptures are confined to the physical
and conceptual constraints of the space they
are presented. Augmented reality applications
allow us to break free from these constraints
and create surreal artworks that challenge the
way we think about gallery spaces as a whole.
This course does not require any previous
knowledge or experience with digital imaging
or augmented applications. We will be moving
at a relaxed pace and you will be surprised at
how fun and easy it is to work with.

Do you want to have your idea run on
smartphones? Learn the basic elements in iOS
application development, including button,
table view, collection view, and local database.
Participants will walk through application
design and element integration, so as to
produce a user-friendly interface. Participants

Preview Video using iMovie. A laptop with
MAC OS installed is highly recommend for the
purpose of practicing.

CLASS DISCOUNTS

a student to EAC classes at the time of registration in order to receive the discount.

referring a new student or have been referred by an EAC student and write in that
student’s name. 20% refund will be issued to the referring student within 30 days
after the referred student’s first class meets. No discounts will be given for dropped

Introducing the EAC’s Independent Study
Program (ISP)
The Evanston Art Center now offers a new
membership tier for those who wish to
work in our studios without instruction.
Participating departments are Jewelry,
Printmaking, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting,
and Digital Media. Monitored Studio Time is
still available to all current students as well.
To participate in Independent Study one
must go through a studio orientation hour
given by the department monitor on the first
day.

teens, adults, and seniors. We have been serving individuals and communities
around Chicago for over 86 years.
To schedule a time to discuss course offerings with the Director of Education,

Once you purchase your membership you
can sign up for 10-weeks of Independent
Study (one 3 hour block of time, one day
per week for 10 weeks). Sign up is available
online, in-person, and by phone. To sign up
on a drop-in basis for 3 hour blocks of time,
it is $30 per drop-in and you must sign up
in-person at the 1717 Central Street location
and then turn in your receipt to the studio
monitor.

This workshop will cover everything you need to
know about painting with beeswax, an ancient
art form that has become more accessible to
modern-day artists. Students will learn about its
diversity and explore mixed media wax painting
– from image transfers, collage, embedding
objects in wax, to impressionistic painting
techniques. The workshop will be an excellent
introduction to the weekly class that will be
offered in the winter. Supplies will be provided.

In this five-week seminar Director of Education
at Hyde Park Art Center, and Director of Chicago
Art Department Mike Nourse will share his
experiences founding and growing Chicago Art
Department (CAD), an Intermedia art lab driven
by artist residencies, exhibitions, and community
partnerships. This seminar will explore a variety
of topics that relate to the contemporary artist, in
addition to a behind the scenes look at a 10 year
old experimental non-profit organization.

LEVEL I: ENGAGING ART APPRECIATION & ART
HISTORY™

This popular program has been customized
for the EAC community. Its multi-dimensional
approach makes looking at and discussing
art really exciting. We will examine significant
events in art using many high-resolution
images. Context is considered alongside
technique. Topics include: How artists’
rejection from the Paris Salon of 1863 led to
Impressionism? Were artists competitive or
collaborative and in what ways did they draw
inspiration from the past. The 1913 NY Armory
Show brought Euro Modernism (Picasso,
Munch, Matisse) to USA: how did that affect
20th century American Art?

LEVEL II: ART EXCITEMENT AND ART HISTORY™

Attendees are encouraged to attend Level I.
The EAC tailored, “Art Excitement” continues,
leading up to how contemporary art has been
affected by earlier periods, technology and
more. Discussion is not limited to how the art
evolved: the way viewers perceive artworks
took a big leap, i.e. we may consider a Raphael
differently than a Koons or Warhol? Surrealism
was short lived, and not for everyone: yet,
we see its fingerprints daily in all media. Pop
art has had a similar fate. Additional topics
may include developments in portraiture and
“art as a metaphor”. Both courses include
observations from the global art markets.
Some subjects may be revised, per input from
Level 1 attendees.

Learn to sew and enjoy a lifetime of creativity!
If you’ve always wanted to make a quality,
perfectly unique garment, this is the class for
you. If you haven’t sewed since childhood, or
never learned from mom, what are you waiting
for? We’ll begin with a few simple accessories
that teach techniques, then select a simple but
wearable garment to build your confidence for
tackling projects on your own. We’ll learn pattern
and fabric choice, layout and proper cutting
techniques, inserting a zipper, waistbands,
facings, and sleeve insertion, depending on your
chosen project. Learn how to adapt patterns for
your own style, and develop those TNTs (triedand-true) for easy and stylish wardrobe builders.

Ikebana is the Japanese art of arranging flowers.
Ikebana expresses the beauty and elegance of
nature through a transformation of fresh or dried
plant materials. Each week, students create new
and different styles of arrangements. Explore
the discipline and values of Ikebana through the
knowledge and application of rules and forms, to
appreciate an idealized approach to nature! All

Returning students who have completed the
Introduction Ikebana course are eligible to
register for this class. Students will review
basic Hana-Isho form, then will be introduced
to the Moribana style which involves more
principle stems. After taking this course,
students should be eligible to apply for their
first certificate from the Ohara School of
Ikebana. Tuition includes flower material.
Additional supplies may be required and can
be purchased through the instructor.
KNITWEAR DESIGN: BEGINNING
PATTERN DRAFTING

Thursday 6-8pm
Learn to use your gauge swatch to calculate
basic straight line shapes – squares, triangles,
rectangles – to be assembled into your own
sweater design. We will discuss needle size,
gauge swatch, stitch patterns, yarn types and
estimated amounts, body measurements,
and ease to help you knit a sweater that fits.
Prerequisite: Must know how to knit and
purl, cast on and bind off. Supply list: Week
1: Pencil, calculator, tape measure, scissors,

Students sculpt the figure in clay from live

REFUNDS

must notify the EAC Registrar. There is no reduced
or pro-rated tuition. There are no refunds or makeup classes for classes students miss. There are no

CANCELLATIONS
Classes are cancelled when enrollment minimums
are not reached. EAC encourages students to
register early. Classes that do not meet enrollment
minimums are cancelled three days before the first
class, and students are notified by telephone. Full
tuition will be refunded within three weeks. The
Art Center reserves the right to change instructors, class structure, or to discontinue any class
without incurring obligations. If a student is unable
to attend a class period for any reason, the Art Center is not responsible for providing any make-up.

MISSED CLASSES
A make-up week is scheduled at the end of each
term in the event a class session is cancelled by the
EAC or the instructor. Make-up week is considered
part of the term, and no refunds will be given for
unattended scheduled classes during this week.
There are no refunds, credits or make-ups for any
other class sessions that were held as scheduled
and missed by the student (student “no-show”).

EVANSTON ART CENTER CLOSINGS
Classes will not be held on major national holidays
or during extremely inclement weather. Generally,
the Art Center follows the decisions of the District
#65 public schools regarding weather related
school closings. Classes falling on these days will
be made up at the end of the term and will be
coordinated between the faculty member and each
class. Only the administration may cancel classes in
case of inclement weather. Please check emergencyclosings.com.

POLICY CHANGES
The administration reserves the right to alter policies pertaining to courses, fees, and other notices in
this catalog from time to time as deemed necessary
for the proper functioning of the Art Center. All
such policy changes will be approved by the Board
of Trustees before action is taken. The administration also reserves the right to cancel classes and
alter scheduling or staffing when circumstances
warrant.
CODE OF CONDUCT
In order to provide students, members, visitors
and staff with a safe and supportive educational
environment, the Evanston Art Center has adopted

STUDIO TIME
Several departments offer studio time to current
students who would like additional time to work in
the EAC studios outside of class time. Studio time
schedules are worked out at the beginning of each
term. Studio time is included in class tuition for Ceramics, Figure Sculpture and Printmaking students.
Studio time is available to Jewelry students for an
additional fee. Jewelry students may sign up for
studio time at any point during term.
YOUTH ARTS LATE PICK-UP FEES
Parents are responsible for picking their children
up on time. The EAC cannot be responsible for students brought early or picked up late. A fee of $10
per every five minutes will be assessed by credit
card or by invoice.
PERMISSION TO PHOTOGRAPH
The Art Center retains the right to photograph any
class, work, student or event and reproduce the images at its discretion without incurring obligations.
PARKING
The parking lot adjacent to the Art Center is available on a first-come first-serve basis with vehicles
exhibiting a parking pass. Parking passes are
availble to students registered in a 5, 6, 10 or 12
week session. The parking passes are available to
pick up at the EAC front desk at the beginning of
each session.

VERENA BRASSEL*
Expressions from Ancient Roots:
A Spiritual Journey
November 21 – December 20, 2015
Opening Reception: November 21, 1 – 4 pm
Swiss artist Verena Brassel’s works are
comprised of mixed media paintings that are
inspired by historical relics, mostly ancient
scripts collected from her various trips to
the Orient, Morocco, India and Israel, and the
landscapes that surround these historic sites.
Her process involves transferring these relics
onto hand-made paper and incorporating
them as collages into her paintings; often
adding soil samples to her palette from these
very sites. She often has experts translate the
script fragments, transforming her paintings
into a mediation on the meaning of these texts.
The final result is that of a spiritual experience,
a symbiosis of emotional reality, mystical
experience, perception, and matter rising from
the subconscious, connecting the viewer with
the unique past from each and every piece.

Mooncrane Theater Ensemble presents Jean
Genet’s classic play about two domestic
workers who plot to kill their privileged
employer. Internationally acclaimed director
Anton Juan is adapting his acclaimed 2013
Manila production for presentation at the
Evanston Art Center. The production follows
Genet’s original instructions that the female
characters be played by men cross-dressed as
women. Award winning Filipino actor Topper
Fabregas will be reprising his role as Claire
and the director will play Solange. The cast
will be rounded out with alternating Chicago
actors as the ill-fated employer.
LOYOLA ACADEMY AP AND HONORS EXHIBITION

This will be the fifth year that the Evanston
Art Center is partnering with Loyola Academy
by hosting their annual student exhibition.
The students work together to edit the work,
install the show, publicize the event, and speak
publically about their artwork and inspirations.
The artwork is always beautifully executed
and offers the audience a window into what is
on the minds of our younger artists.

An Artwork-in-Residence Program at the
Evanston Art Center
“Society!” The first ever Artwork-in-Residence
Program at the Evanston Art Center will
begin this coming winter. Jessica Cochran,
Consulting Curator, will invite artists to
participate in this inaugural program that will
work to develop a hybrid work and exhibition
space. Artists will develop their work in a
temporary public platform with space to
experiment and develop their artwork while
engaging the EAC community. An open call
for three artists to participate in this residency

Each decade the British film journal Sight and
Sound asks a select group of international film
critics to select the greatest films of all time by
contributing a list of ten films. The editors collect
and tally these list and publish the results along
with each individual critics list. 846 critics from
73 countries contributed top ten lists in 2012

Evanston Arts Center in collaboration with
Insight Arts will be offering a special ongoing
series of free screenings of films appearing on
the 2012 list. Craig Harshaw, Executive Director
of Insight Arts and curator of this ongoing series,
will provide brief introductions to each film and
facilitate after screening audience dialogues.

PARKING
The parking lot adjacent to the Art Center is available on a first-come first-serve basis
with vehicles exhibiting a parking pass. Parking passes are availble to students registered in a 5, 6, 10 or 12 week session. The parking passes are available to pick up at
the EAC front desk at the beginning of each session. Street parking is also available.

The EAC is closed for the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, Memorial Day, July 4th
(Classes will be in session on July 3), Labor Day, and the week of Thanksgiving. The
EAC closes for a holiday break from 12/24 thru 1/1.

After serving the community for 86 years, the Evanston Art Center
is entering a new and exciting stage of growth in our 1717 Central
Street building and location. As a result, we are expanding our Board
of Trustees to better encompass the skills and expertise that will be
necessary to successfully navigate this strategic next step.
The Board of Trustees currently has specific needs to fill in fundraising,
facility management and human resource backgrounds. If you are
