refrigerant will mean big changes to the way you install,
maintain, and service air conditioners and heat pumps.
R-22 Condensers can no
longer be made after
Dec. 31st, 2009
Your evaporator coil will need to be
changed when converting to R410A.
Old R22 Coils are nor compatible
with the new refrigerant and POE oils
Lineset sizes have changed with
many R410A systems. They must
also be properly “flushed” or changed
when upgrading to R410A

R-410A Guide
R410A
Brazing
R410A operates at higher pressures
than the traditional air conditioning
refrigerant R22, (1 ½ x R22.). So are
the currently used tools, controls,
copper pipe, and other components
suitable for R410A systems?
The higher operating pressures of
R410A require the use of brazing
instead of soldering. A high quality
brazing compound with 15% silver is
recommended.
Gauges, Gauge Manifolds and
Charging Hoses
Purging
When brazing copper linesets, you
should always run nitrogen thru the
lines while you are brazing to prevent oxidation inside the lines.
Existing R22 gauges, manifolds and
charging hoses must not be used
with R410A. The safe working pressures are not high enough for
R410A. Hoses and Manifolds should
not be used on BOTH R410A & R22.
Superheat / Subcooling
In addition to charging as a liquid,
you will need to charge your R410A
systems by the superheat / subcooling method. If you don’t already
have a dual input temperature meter, you will need one to properly
calculate superheat / subcooling.
Refrigerant Recovery Machines
Most currently used reclaim machines will not be suitable because of
the higher operating pressures of
R410A.
Evacuation
Moisture in R410A systems can
cause significant problems. Proper
evacuation is more important than
ever to ensure proper operation and
life expectancy of new equipment.
Vacuums to 500 microns are standard practice on R410A installations.

Flushing / Lineset Changeout
Existing refrigerant lines should only
be reused where changing them is
not feasible. When reusing the lines,
a suitable Flushing Agent (like Diversitech Pro-Flush) should be used to
properly clean the linesets, and remove the old R22 refrigerant oils
