Arrival of Basque Children Refugees - 70th Anniv.
One of a pair of sheets produced by the Basque Children of ’37 Association UK to mark the 70th Anniversary of the arrival in Great Britain of 4,000
Basque children exiled from Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Two different designs were used; the first depicted the SS Habana, a converted
liner used to evacuate the children, and the second featured a pair of British charity labels issued at the time to raise funds for the children.
Five sheets of the SS Habana were printed and ten sheets of the charity label design. Of the charity label sheet; four sheets were broken up to

In March 2008, Shine Communications (via eBay) offered for auction a unique set of six Royal Mail Smilers sheets featuring images of Mingus
Luchien Reedus (born October 22, 1999), the son of supermodel turned photographer, Helena Christensen. Helena has donated the images in an
effort to raise money for Woman’s Aid, the domestic violence charity. The sheets are signed by Helena Christensen.
Shine Communications is a promotional company based in London and had previously auctioned the Celebrity Smilers in 2007 featuring images
by Penny Lancaster amongst others. This offering featured photographic images by supermodel turned professional photographer Helena

sheets featuring the Matterhorn Mountain from pictures taken my Simon in 2006. The first sheet shows a winter view of the mountain with the
Hornli Ridge in the foreground. The second, a view of the summit taken on 13th September 2006. Only 20 copies of each sheet have been printed
and to preseve their scarcity and collector appeal no reprints will be made. Ten sheets of each issue have been signed by the celebrated
mountaineer Stephen Venables.

The Ten Commandments
2006 The Ten Commandments: Two years ago the Royal Mail were asked to initially produce 1 Smilers Sheet comprising the Ten
Commandments. The left and right panes each having a set of 10 with Commandments 2, 3 and 4 running on into the next label. A proof copy of
the layout was sent to Royal Mail and they agreed to produce the sheet as instructed. However what they printed instead was ten individual
sheets each with a different label contrary to instructions and without consultation. The set of 10 sheets were prepared as a presentation for His

The photo images were donated to raise money for Woman’s Aid, the domestic violence charity. The sheets are signed by Pearl Lowe, Sophie

Basque Children - Rowley Lodge
Rowley Lodge in Rowley Lane, Arkley near Barnet, is a beautiful house and garden. It is now in the London Borough of Barnet but in 1937 was in
the county of Hertfordshire. The Catholic Church and Salvation Army were among the first institutions to provide shelter and care for about one
third of the children who had arrived in this country from Spain as refugees on the 23rd May 1937, and although their intentions were no doubt
sincere, their ability to supply proper facilities was not always successful.

Basque Children - Rowley Lodge Revisited
On 26 June a group of Basque 'children' now in their 80s, together with close members of their families revisited Rowley Lodge. The visiting party
consisted of around 30 people and included 11 former residents who lived at Rowley Lodge at various times between 1937 and 1945. None of
them have revisited the house since living in it as children and it was a very emotional reunion made possible by the kind hospitality of the
present owners. Cliff Kirkpatrick had been instrumental in bringing about the invitation and was privileged to be there on the day.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of this outstanding Stuart mansion built on the south bank of the River Thames between Richmond and
Kingston. Understandably the National Trust has organised a full programme of activities throughout the year for this special anniversary and
further details are available on their website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hamhouse. The house itself and beautifully maintained gardens belonged
to the Tollmache family for over 300 years and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest 17th century houses. It really is a gem worth visiting for
its magnificent achitecture and rare collection of textiles, furniture and art.

Basque Children - Hutton Hall
Hutton Hall near Guisborough in the Cleveland Hills area of North Yorkshire was built in 1866 for Joseph Whitwell Pease, a
prominent Quaker, industrialist, and at the time Liberal Member of Parliament for South Durham. In its heyday it would have been
magnificent and replaced an earlier and less grand Hutton Hall which was pulled down in 1868 when the present building was fully
functioning. Its former splendour is still very evident.
