February has 28 days this year as though it is not a leap year. It’s my understanding that back in the day, Julius Caesar gave the month 29 and 30 days every four years. This was due to the Roman emperor Augustus, who took one day from February and added that to August (because August was a month that was named after him.) Hmmm…I suppose one can do that if a month is named after him or her. In any case, we also celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14th, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on the 16th and George Washington’s birthday 22nd. Valentine’s Day actually has some pretty interesting facts about it…probably too many to cover in this space, though. In the United States we typically celebrate this day with cards and candy which is really pretty nice…especially the candy part. However you celebrate the day, make it a great one by expressing your love to those closest to you. I will, simply as a reminder of something I often take for granted. Don’t forget to keep sending in those pictures and stories. I’m happy to include them in the upcoming issues. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sincerely, Thomas F. (Tom) Fitzgibbons Publisher, Country Club Life N2 Publishing – Des Moines 515.493.9186 [email protected] C USTOM F RAMING The month of February is upon us and hopefully we’re all recovering well from the Christmas and New Year holidays! Medium density fiber board ( MDF), varying wood species and plaster are the most popular products. Finger jointed trim pieces are several short wood pieces that have been glued together to create one longer piece. These pieces are generally less costly and best utilized for ceiling crown. However, in an application where several cuts will need to be made, this can create an issue if you would decide to make a cut at one of these finger joints. Home Matters By Paula Schnoor - Comes | Country Club Resident W ood T rim M olding B asics Selecting the right molding on top of cabinets, light rail for under cabinets or applied to walls is an art form. It is something that needs to be considered carefully when designing your space. There are so many options available at your hardware store and on-line it can be overwhelming. It is helpful to know the four basics. Scale – You want to select a trim piece that is appropriately sized for the application. For instance, a ½” scribe molding would look miniscule on top of a 42” wall cabinet. If it was used to hide the space where wall cabinets meet the wall it would appropriately blend right in instead of being an accent piece. Designers often will stack pieces of trim in order to increase the size of scale in certain applications. I use a special molding box in my design office to demonstrate to customers how stacked trim pieces will look in the field. Style- Style is also an important aspect to think about. Dentil molding on a non-traditional house like a southwestern style home would look odd, but it would look right at home on a salt box or colonial style home. Shaker and Craftsman style cabinets would have a cove style molding for an accent piece. Installation application- For most molding detail an air compressor with a pin nailer or a micro pin nailer is the tool of choice. To cut molding, a compound miter saw is utilized with special stops. Such items like crown are not cut on a true 45 degree angle instead they are cut at 38-39 degrees. A handy tool called digital angle finder can help properly measure interior, exterior, acute and obtuse angles. At each joint wood glue is applied and the excess is sanded or wiped off prior to staining or painting. Anyone who has ever attempted to install crown knows, it is not for the weekend trim warrior. It takes some practice and patience, but with a little of both you can mega-trim your own house! If you have molding questions you want answered please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Laus Deo, Paula Schnoor-Comes NeighborhoodNews February Country Club Life Molly’s Musings A Resident’s Perspective: A Perfect Month I want you to take a moment to yourself. Deep breath in, deep breath out. No, don’t think about your doctor’s office and the inevitable awkwardness of whatever encounters that may await you. Focus on the steady breaths in and out and clear your mind. Now is the time you can think about your yoga instructor guiding your respiration and your serene disposition. Mind empty? Now, imagine the perfect month. You needn’t work too hard—it has arrived. This February, not just any February, it’s the perfect month. Just look at the calendar. You’ll soon see the perfect symmetry and evenness of the four weeks, twenty-eight days. There is something so satisfying about seeing the balanced grid of the month. However, that is not the only satisfying element of February 2015. This February kicks off with the Super Bowl. The very first day of this wondrous month happens to include the biggest sports day on the American calendar. We have the opportunity to start the month with tailgating foods, team rivalries, inevitable screaming at the television, a heavily critiqued half-time show, and amazing commercials. Can you get any better than that? Well, maybe. Groundhog Day follows on the heels of the Super Bowl, but how many people really look forward to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction? Two weeks later, Valentine’s Day is there to deeply excite or thoroughly disappoint you— 11 hopefully former. The lovey-dovey day can be a fun time to gush over loved ones, spoil each other, and spend time specifically set aside to work together as couples. Only two days later is President’s Day! Rejoice! The day we can recall all the great things our presidents have done to make our country as it is today and reflect on our favorites. Franklin Pierce, anyone? No, I’m just kidding. Pierce was terrible. I’m much more partial to William Henry Harrison. Any history buffs out there? Take a minute to chuckle to yourself…I’ll wait. But really, President’s Day is frequently a much-needed day off for hardworking people. For those of you who do not have the day off, I am sincerely sorry; I’ll be thinking of you as I sit on my couch eating bon-bons. The day after President’s Day is Mardi Gras—literally a day dedicated to getting fat. My kind of day. With beads flying, pancakes flipping, and parties raging, Mardi Gras is sure to be a fun day to add to the icing on the cake that is February. (Let’s just ignore the day after Mardi Gras—deal?) And with the Chinese New Year a few days later, I mean how much fun can you pack into one month!? Okay, yes, I might have smudged the ending a bit, but I am excited for this month, so I just had to share it! Have a merry February everybody, and a very happy Chinese New Year. 12 NeighborhoodNews 2 s d i k kids Country Club Life February February Country Club Life NeighborhoodNews 13 Beggar’s Night 2014. By Neil Shultz - Country Club Resident Interesting Facts… You may have heard people talk about Rider Corner which is commonly referred to as the corner where I 35/80 turns to the south at Highway 141, but... Did you know... In the early 1900's, there was a small town named Rider or Ryder depending on the source. In 1923, Rider's population was just 12. Rider Corner was a small shopping area. At one time, there were two grocery stores, a creamery and a post office all of which mainly served area farmers. T he post office was only open from 1900 until 1905. There was also a coal mine called the Rider Mine, which was located about 110th and Meredith. The pallet company on Meredith was built on land near the railroad that ran through Rider. So Rider Corner was much more than a corner on the interstate. *Special thanks to Virginia Gee of the Urbandale Historical Society who helped me with the research. napolis where it remained until the factory closed in 1937.
