The Franciscan Church of the Assumption ANNUAL REPORT 2012/13 MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR Peace and all good things to you! As I write these words, the Franciscan family has just finished celebrating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. He would be among the loudest in praise of our God as the vibrant colors of autumn are witnessing to the divine splendor across Central New York. The Poor Man of Assisi is among those holy men and women who remind us that even the leaves and trees can tell of God. St. Francis knew as well as anyone else, however, that the human person fully alive is the most eloquent praise of God. You hold this Annual Report in your hands because your dedication and generosity to the Franciscan Church of the Assumption and its ministries witness to the goodness of God and are an act of praise. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Franciscan family here in Syracuse, and especially the people whom we serve on the North Side. I would love to report to you that we have enough resources to do what we do. The truth is, however, that we are critically in need of funds to support the church, which bears the brunt of the daily costs of maintaining a magnificent space for worship and beautiful campus which provides space and utilities for Franciscan Northside Ministries and Assumption Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen in the heart of the North Side. If you can find it in your heart to make a sacrificial gift for the church in particular, the Franciscan family here would be deeply grateful as we seek to continue our mission. Rector Our Mission: Photos and Design by: Jennifer Huntley Building on over a century and a half of Franciscan presence on Syracuse’s Northside, the members of the Franciscan Church of the Assumption and the volunteers and the staff of its Outreach Ministries seek to serve the spiritual and physical needs of the local community, especially those most in need. Through prayer, worship, and direct service, we seek to help our brothers and sisters recognize their worth and dignity as beloved children of the one loving Creator. Fiscal year 2012/13 was a successful year based on so many generous contributions. Over the last four years The Assumption Church Alumni Fund has received donations of $43,760. The Spring 2013 Fabulous 500 Raffle added $10,280 to the Church's income. Assumption's dinners, hoted by volunteers and treating everyone to home-style cooking included the Sauerbraten Dinner in October 2012, two fish dinners in Lent 2013 and Breakfast with Santa in December 2012. These events generated a total of $8,552. Father Brad announced the restoration of the organ in the upper church beginning in May 2013. We are happy to report that the restoration is complete. A rededication concert and Alumni celebration was held on October 27, 2013. In an effort to recoup the expense of the repair we are asking anyone who is interested to consider making a contribution to the organ repair fund. Dietrich We thank you. Office of Mission Advancement Greetings from the Office of Mission Advancement. As many of you know I joined the staff here at Assumption in January of 2013. While I can’t speak for the year 2012, I can tell you that since I have arrived I have seen an amazing start to 2013. I find that I use the word “humbling” quite often when I describe our work, but it seems to be the most natural word when I see what takes place on our campus and within our church each day. In ten short months I have been embraced by the Assumption Community as a family member. Every day I see our staff and volunteers working hard to make the lives of those on the Northside of Syracuse a better place. On the flip side, I see the people we serve waiting in line for food, groceries, health care, legal help or someone in need of nurturing their spirit and soul. I see the donations that come to our church and each of our ministries. No matter how small or large, whether it’s monetary or an item we might need, each donation improves the life of another and helps to make our job a little easier. This year’s Annual Report is filled with information on our income and expenses, our fundraisers, the services we offer, and the number of people we care for. It’s also filled with hope, inspiration, and love. It reminds me that everyone who works with us and for us is here for the good of God. We have many wonderful things planned for 2014 and we ask for your continued help, support and prayers as we continue our work here at Assumption.
