U.S. Submarine Force Losses Apr/May/Jun
APRIL
USS Pickerel (SS-177) was lost on
3 April 1943 with the loss of 74 officers and men when it was sunk within lume of Shiramuka Light off Honshu (AKA Shiramuka Light).
USS Pickerel (SS-177), 28 Dec 1942, at the
Mare Island Navy Yard.
USS Grenadier(SS-210) was lost on
22 April 1943 with the loss of 4 officers and men when it was sunk near
Penang, about 10 miles west of Lem
Voalan Strait (61 officers and men
were taken prisoner; 57 survived the
war).
USS Snook (SS-279) was lost on 8
April 1945 with the loss of 84 officers and men when it was sunk within 100 miles east of 18 40N 111
39E, near Hainan Island < 300 feet.
USS Thresher (SS-593) was lost on
10 April 1963 with the loss of 129
officers and men when it was sunk
while on sea trials near Isle of
Shoals.
USS S-27 (SS-132) was lost on 19
June 1942 after grounding off Amchitka Island, 400 yds off island.
Near St Makarius Point (near Constantine Harbor), all the crew were
rescued.
MAY
USS Lagarto (SS-371) was lost on 3
May 1945 with the loss of 88 officers
and men when it was sunk off Malay
Coast in or near the Gulf of Siam 7
55N 102 00E.
USS Gudgeon (SS-211) was lost on
12 May 1944 with the loss of 80 officers and men when it was sunk off Saipan near Maug Island.
USS Squalus (SS-192) was lost on 23
May 1939 with the loss of 26 officers
and men when it flooded and sank off
Portsmouth, NH.
USS Scorpion (SS-589) was lost on
27 May 1968 with the loss of 99 officers and men when it was sunk while
in transit from Med, West of Azores.
USS Stickleback (SS-415) was lost 30
May 1958, when she sank off of Hawaii while under tow after a collision
with the USS Silverstein (DE-534).
The entire crew was taken off prior to
the boat sinking.
USS S-27 (SS-132)
USS R-12 (SS-89) was lost on 12
June 1943 with the loss of 42 officers and men when it foundered off
Key West, 24 24'30N 81 28'30.
USS Herring (SS-233) was lost on
1 June 1944 with the loss of 80 officers and men when it was sunk
within shore battery range of Point
Tagan, Matsuwa Island, In Kurlies.
USS Golet (SS-361) was lost on 14
June 1944 with the loss of 82 officers and men when it was sunk near
41 04N 14 13E. USS Bonefish (SS223) was lost on 18 June 1945 with
the loss of 86 officers and men
when it was sunk in Toyama Wan,
near Suzu Misaki; 37 18N 137 25E.
JUNE
USS 0-9 (SS-70) was lost on 20
June 1941 with the loss of 34 officers
and men when it foundered off Isle of
Shoals, 15 miles from Portsmouth,
NH, 42 59' 48N 20 20' 27W.

The gift for which our departed
Shipmates laid their lives on the
line is our freedom today. We express our gratitude for their service by our remembrance of them.

silence breathe a prayer for our
absent shipmates.
Abraham "Blue Mex" Sanchez,
passed away 3 December 2012 in
Mexico City, Mexico. He had been
fighting several serious medical conditions for the past several months.
Abraham qualified in submarines
onboard USS Grenadier SS525 in
1961. He also served aboard USS
Picuda SS382, USS Diodon SS349,
and USS Grayback SSG574. Abra-
ham joined us at USSVI Groton
Base in 2012 and was a Life and
Holland Club member.
James B. Palmer, age 81, passed
away 10 January 2013 after a life
battle with age. Jim qualified in
submarines onboard USS Sabalo
SS302 in 1953. He also served
aboard USS Tiru SS416..Jim
joined us at USSVI Groton Base in
1988 and was a Life and Holland
club member.
Marvin M. Ruzansky, age 88,
passed away 22 January 2013 in
West Hartford, CT. Marvin qualified in submarines onboard USS
Marlin SS204 in 1944. He also
served aboard USS Salmon SS182
and USS Sturgeon SS187. Marvin
joined us at USSVI Groton Base in
1999 and was a Life and Holland Club
member.
Edward F. Kalin, age 91, passed
away 2 February 2013 in Fremont,
CA. Ed qualified in submarines
onboard USS Tunny SS282 in 1943.
He also served aboard USS Silversides SS236. He left the Navy in
1945 as MOMM1(SS). Ed joined us
at USSVI Groton Base in 2000 and
was a Life and Holland Club member.
Joseph M. Hinchey, age 87, passed
away 2 February 2013 in Wrentham.
MA. Joe qualified in submarines
onboard USS Spikefish SS404
in1952. He also served aboard USS
Entemedor SS340. He was LCDR
when he retired from the Navy in

1962. Joe joined us at USSVI
Groton Base in 2001 and was a Life
and Holland Club member.
Robert D. Perry, Jr., age 86, passed
away 9 February 2013 at Lawrence
& Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. Bob qualified in submarines onboard USS Harder SS568 in
1956. He also served aboard USS
Hunley AS31, USS Orion AS18,
USS Shark SSN591, USS George
Washington SSBN598, USS John Marshall SSBN611, and USS Alexander
Hamilton SSBN 617. Bob joined us at
USSVI Groton Base in 2000 and was a
Life and Holland Club member.
And then some starless night the
cable slips, leaving only an eddy
at the mooring place.
Gulls veer no longer, Sailor rest
your oar. No tangled wreckage
will be washed ashore.”
”There is a port of no return, where
ships may ride at anchor for a little
space.

Chaplain’s Offerings: Tom Russell, Base Chaplain
As I sit down to
write this quarterly
message, the
weather looks
pretty good as far
as this year is
concerned. We
had one significant snowfall and
that is it so far.
Date today – Feb 21 – the sun is
shining and the sky is blue. Can't
ask for more than that.
Our Honors Detail has been called
to duty only twice so far this year,
and I am breaking my rule of mentioning the level of activities. In the
past, every mention of having few
shipmates going on Eternal Patrol
has resulted in a number of losses
turning up. Therefore, I say little
about the paucity of services.
We have had two Honors services
so far this year, with the first being
for James B. Palmer, a resident of
Jewett City here in Connecticut.
The Honors Detail mustered at
VFW Post 10004 in Jewett City on
Saturday 19 January at noon it their
large meeting room. His circle of
family and friends had the place
packed – it just goes to show the
magnetism of the departed by the
number of people that show up at
the service. Nineteen of our stalwarts were on hand and the Honors
service was well received by the
family and many friends. The reward for doing this is beyond measure. Just ask the members of the
detail.
Our second Honors service of this
period was for Robert D. Perry Sr.
HMCS(SS) USN (ret). Bob lived
close by in Niantic and died at L&M
hospital in New London. The calling
hours were Thursday 14 February at
6:30 at Byles Funeral Home in
Groton. Even with short notice, we
had seventeen members at the Honors service, and the family was more
than pleased with our being able to
attend. One certainly realizes the
impact of losing a family member
and the value of having others support them with recognition and respect.
Shifting now to the description of the
Chaplain's job as I see it brings to
the fore what I say to myself in the
weekly readings of personal goals
and affirmations. I have shared this
with you before, but it never hurts to
say it again, and this time, detail it a
bit more closely. The second section
of the job description says, "As a
chaplain, I serve my shipmates by
cultivating their awareness of God
within them, comforting the ill and
infirm, and honoring the dead." The
part I want to expand on is the cultivating your awareness of God within
you.
Underneath all of this lies the definition of what we are. You see, the
trouble with almost all human beings
is that we think that we are our bodies. You look in the mirror and see
who you are. We all seem to respond to what we look like and what
others look like. We look at their
bodies and think that is who they are.
We remember them as a figure, a
body figure. We respond to our-
selves and others when we say "I"
or "you" as a body.
Here is the shift. You see, we are
not our bodies. We are spirits, having a human experience. Think
about this. Do I know the real you?
Do you know the real me? No, of
course not. Do we respond to that
concept? No, largely, we do not.
Maybe we are sensitive to others’
feelings, but that is not what they
are. Here are some thoughts –
many of us are told that when they
die, they go to heaven or hell or
some other place. Many of us think
that when we die, that this is the
end, period.
Now, look at some of the sayings of
the spiritual leaders, or the Bible, or
the Quran. The 23rd Psalm ends
with "and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord forever.” Over and over
again, Jesus refers to living forever,
the life everlasting. This is a huge
jump for a person to pick this up
from my few words. Consider this
concept of the spirit. The spirit that
is us arrives at the beginning of the
heartbeat, when a fetus "quickens."
The spirit that is us lives the human
life until our heart stops or we stop
breathing. The spirit that is us then
lives on forever with God and with
those humans who constantly keep
those spirits in their hearts and
minds.

Commander’s Corner
Hello, shipmates at
Groton
Base, and a
hearty welcome aboard
to any new
members.
We thank
you for joining us, and
we hope that
you are just as proud of being a
member of Groton Base as the rest
of us are.
We spent a lot of time and effort during the winter months getting as
many members as possible to renew
their dues for 2013. Through the
hard work and effort of so many people we significantly reduced the
number of non-renewals. That’s
great. The membership reports continually show us that members that
were dropped are still rejoining us.
That’s even better. Our focus should
now be on recruiting new members
for our continued growth. We ended
2012 with 2267 members. We ended
2010 with 2356 members and 2011
with 2281. That’s a downward trend
that we have to turn around. We are
already sitting with almost 2008
members for 2013. Let’s make a
concentrated effort to end 2013 with
even more members. It would be
great if we could end the year with
3000 members. It could easily be
done if each regular member signed
up one new member.
As we move into spring and closer to
June we move into the busiest time
of the year for us. We need your
support both financially with donations, and we need members to get
involved. We continually need volunteers to help us put on these
events and we need you to support
our events and functions.
On top of everything else going on,
we have Base Elections going on
over the next few months. Many
thanks to PW Louthain and Al Atkinson who served on the Nominations
committee for the Base and Club
nominations. Now it’s time for all of
the Regular Members to let their
voices be heard and to elect the leadership for the organization, and for all
members including Associate Members to elect the leadership for the
Club Officers/Board of Trustees who
run the bar.
Why should you vote in Groton Base
election? Because voting is the right
thing to do as Americans. Voting is
your given right. It’s one of those
things that you served your country
for. So please vote in the Groton Base
elections. You can vote quickly and
easily through our electronic voting
booth or you can vote with a paper
ballot that is dropped off or mailed to
the clubhouse. I don’t care how you
vote or who you vote for. Just vote!
We are also working on the annual
HOLLAND CLUB ceremony to recognize the newest group of members to
be honored by being inducted into the
prestigious HOLLAND CLUB. We
have 51 members that we are inducting on 1 June. The success of the
ceremony depends on the responses
of those being inducted. We try to
make the HOLLAND CLUB ceremony
more memorable than the day you
actually received your dolphins. To
those being inducted, please help us
make this a great event by providing
the needed information in a timely
manner. For the rest of you, you can
help us make this a great event by
turning out at 9am on 1 June to honor
the shipmates who have reached this
significant milestone.
We have several memorial services
scheduled at the National Submarine
Memorial East. Scheduled memorial
services are on 14 April at 1 PM, 04
May at 1 PM, and Memorial Day 27
May at 11 AM. These memorial services are truly why we exist: To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates
who gave our lives in the pursuit of
their duties…. That’s the first line of
our creed and our primary purpose. I
hope that is important enough for
many of you to join us for these timehonored ceremonies passed down to
us from the U.S. SUBVETS WWII
when we remember those who made
the ultimate sacrifice in submarines
for our country.
I often give thought to what makes
Groton Base so special. I always
come up with the same answer. It’s
the membership that continues to
makes Groton Base so special. It’s
not one person, it’s all 2008 members and their families who make it
special. The members who volunteer and help put on our programs,
and the members who support
these programs. The members
who make donations and the members who just renew their dues to
be part of Groton Base. It’s the
membership that help Groton Base
continue to be the leader in USSVI.
What can you do to support us?
Perhaps a donation in support of
one of our programs. Perhaps volunteering some time in putting on or
attending one of our events. Perhaps checking on an old shipmate
and making his day because he
heard from you. Maybe it’s just
something as simple as getting the
newsletter via the internet and saving us a few dollars. Or maybe it’s
just supporting the club with a beer,
soda or bowl of chili now and then.
If you can do more, great!
Whatever it is that you do for SUBVETS Groton helps, and I sincerely
thank you for all that you do to help
us improve. Without you, we are
nothing but a name of an organization started almost 50 years ago.
I continue to be proud to be the
Base Commander for SUBVETS
Groton Base. Aside from being a
COB I can think of no better job in
the submarine community when all
of the members are pulling together
in the same direction to make U.S.
Submarine Veterans Groton Base
the premier organization for submariners and their families.
If there is something that I can do
better or that your EBOARD can do
better to help Groton Base, please
let me know.
Thanks for all that you do for SUBVETS Groton Base. Keep up the
great work. Bring those ideas forward and GET INVOLVED!

USSVI Groton Base News
First of all, welcome home to USS
PROVIDENCE (SSN 719), who recently returned from deployment.
Thanks for what you do and for the
sacrifices made over the last few
months while on deployment. We
have missed you and are proud of
what you do.
In a few weeks results of the Senior
Chief and Master Chief Selection
Boards will be out. Right behind that
will be the results of the E-4, E-5, and
E-6 advancement exams taken a few
weeks ago. Congratulations to you
guys on your advancement. It’s not
an easy accomplishment by any
means and is certainly one to be
proud of. If you were advanced and
you are a member, please make sure
you contact Membership Chairman
Robert Perritt at [email protected]
to get your new rating info updated in
the database so our records are accurate.
We have recently lost several shipmates who have transferred on to
new assignments. CMDCM(SS) Wes
Koshoffer transferred off to
COMSUBLANT and Gaylord Humphries has retired after 30 years. In
addition Captain Mark Denno will also
be relieved as the CO of SUBASE by
the end of May. It won’t be too far off
before our good friend at CSG-2
RADM Richard Breckenridge is relieved and moves on to his next assignment. Many thanks Wes, Gaylord, Captain Denno and RADM
Breckenridge for all of your support in
the past. Your support and friendship
have been greatly appreciated, and
you have made a difference in the
area and within SUBVETS.
Welcome back to some of our shipmates who have spent some time on
the Binnacle List: Paul McGrath, Wil
Nelson, Ernie Plantz, and Tommy
Cox to name a few. It’s great seeing
you guys back with us.
As we move closer towards summer
we have a lot going on. Obviously
our Anniversary Celebration is a big
deal. The Submarine Force Birthday
is always a special time. Our Scholarship Program will be reviewing
applications for the Groton Base
Scholarships. And we have three
Memorial Services: one in April for
the Submarine Force Birthday and
USS THRESHER, the Anniversary
Celebration Memorial Service and of
course Memorial Day. Remember
those memorial services and
“perpetuating the memory” is truly
what we are about. And we also
have our annual HOLLAND CLUB
ceremony and July 4th parade not
far behind that as well.
This time of year we have two major
fundraisers going on that you have
received or will be receiving some
correspondence on. One is for the
Groton Base Scholarship Fund and
the other is for the Memorial Fund.
We thank you in advance for your
support of these worthwhile functions. The Scholarship Fund helps to
educate our kids and grandkids for
the future, and our Memorial Fund
helps preserve our history at the
USSV WWII National Submarine
Memorial East. With the weather
getting better all the time we hope
you will have the opportunity to visit
the memorial and see the great
shape that it’s in thanks to the hard
work of our Memorial Committee.
We also had a fundraiser to support
our clubhouse that you the membership have been very generous in
supporting.
In addition to our memorial services
and fundraisers there are three important Base items of business that
we have to tend to.
The first item of business is the Base
Elections. Nominations are now
closed, and it’s time for you as the
Base Members to let your voice be
heard and vote for the leadership for
the Base and the Club/Bar for the
next two years. Voting will be open till
just before the June Meeting on 31
May. You can vote electronically or by
mailing in a paper ballot. The bottom
line is to vote.
Next it’s time to recruit some new
members. Take a look at who you

well, and we have also started a new
program to render honors to boats
that are outbound and departing on

Base, to improve our clubhouse, and
to help out the community. We accomplish a lot, and you can hold your
heads high as members of SUBVETS
Groton Base. We are the “First and
Finest” base of USSVI because of all
that you do.

The Westport Satellite Group (WSG)
is a group of Groton Base SUBVETS
who live in the southwest corner of
CT. They enjoy the benefits of being
a part of the First and Finest, provide
a great deal of support to us here at
Groton Base and have the added
advantage of getting together as
shipmates for good times and submarine camaraderie even though they
live 70–100 miles away from the clubhouse. The group as a whole are
great supporters of SUBVETS Groton
Base. They cook brunch once a
month and are big supporters of the
Kaps for Kids, Scholarship and
Thanksgiving programs.

Bar News: Karen Torkelson
years managing the club and I’ve
loved the 12 years I’ve worked here.
The members have made this a second home for me.
As I step down I would like to think
that the leadership of the club and
organization will work hard together
to make this a better place for our
members. The club and the organization go hand in hand. The success
of both parts depends on them working together for the betterment of
both. In my opinion the organization
would not be as large if we didn’t
It was a long, snowy, cold winter. We
had to close the clubhouse several
times due to bad weather. We apologize for any inconvenience we might
have caused, but the safety of our
staff and members comes first.
Coming to your clubhouse are our
anniversary weekend in May and the
Holland Club Induction in June. We
hope to see our members supporting
and enjoying both events.
As many of you know, I’m stepping
down as permittee and manager of
the club. I have enjoyed the 4 ½
have the club and we couldn’t have a
club if we didn’t have the organization. Please do your part to support
your club and your organization.
I would like to thank everyone who
has supported me in the years I have
been with the club, from the awesome
staff to the great members. Without
their support and encouragement I
could not have made this journey. It
would take far too much space to
thank each person individually, but I
hope that you know how much I have
appreciated your support!
Submarine Homecomings
During submarine homecomings
SUBVETS welcome home submarines returning from deployment to
Groton, CT, the Submarine Capitol of
the World. It is always great to be a
part of these events.
In addition we have implemented a
new program to recognize our shipmates heading out on deployments.
We refer to these as Outward Bound
events. We now muster to render
honors for submarines heading out on
deployment to show our respect for
the crew for what they are setting out
to do and the sacrifices they will make
with regards to their families while
they are gone. This is just as important as the homecomings. We’ve
all been there and know the significance of those deployments to our
country and the submarine force.
We muster under the Gold Star
Bridge for the homecomings and
outward bound honors. For homecomings the saluting battery will fire
off seven rounds in salute to the returning deployers while our SUBVETS man the rails. Then the crew
scrambles down to the pier and joins
the family and official parties in welcoming them home. For the outward
bound submarines, they simply render honors with a hand salute.
They also provide great opportunities for SUBVETS to support our
active duty shipmates and to promote SUBVETS.
Because of security classifications,
word of returning deployers cannot
be put out in advance. This results in
little of time to get the word out.
This notification is predominantly
done by email and by phone.
If you want to be part of these events
and do not have email capability contact the Base Chaplain Tom Russell
at (860)536–7733 and he will put you
on our list.
He will let you know about these
events when the information about
the returning deployer is no longer
classified so that hopefully you can be
involved.
Many thanks to all those who showed
up for these homecomings and welcome home to the crews.

USSVI Next of Kin Data/Eternal Patrol
In our USSVI database there is a
place to enter your next of kin information and how to contact them.
When we are called to Eternal Patrol,
it is too late to provide that information and it becomes very difficult
for the National or Base Chaplain to
offer any comfort or support because
they do not know who to contact.
We have had several shipmates pass
over the bar and had no next of kin
information recorded in their record.
That becomes cumbersome and embarrassing when we do not know who
to provide your Eternal Patrol Certificate to.
If you have current next of kin already
entered into your record, thank you
and no further action is required. If
you don’t know or you don’t have that
information there, please help us and
get your current next of kin information added to your record along
with at least a telephone number so
that we can offer support when that
time comes along.
You can up your own record at
www.ussvi.org by notifying the Membership Chairman or Base Commander and asking us to have it added or
by sending it to the national office
([email protected]) with a similar
request to add.
It is also helpful if your family knows
to contact us in the event of your
passing. The sooner that we know,
the better we can get the word out to
the Honors Detail. Some members
we have found out about their passing the day before or the day of the
wake/funeral, and were not able to
render honors. For some we have
found out a month or even a year later. This can be prevented if your family knows to contact us.
Please ensure your family knows that
if you depart on Eternal Patrol to contact either Base Chaplain Tom Russell or the Base Commander. Thanks
for helping us to ultimately help your
next of kin.

National Submarine Memorial East: Dick McGirr
The Memorial Committee is responsible for the care and maintenance
of the U.S. SUBVETS WWII National
Memorial East. All of the funds to do
this work come from either donations
or the Annual Appeal and Raffle.
Your support is in keeping with our
creed “To perpetuate the memory of
our Shipmates who gave their lives
in support of our country…”
Those funds were really needed this
past year as we accomplished some
major structural work at the National
Submarine Memorial. Without your
support we would not have been
able to accomplish that needed
work.
The memorial has been in layup for
the winter months. But by the time
that you read this article, things will
be happening around the memorial.
We start holding our annual memorial services in April for the Submarine
Force Birthday/Anniversary of the
loss of USS THRESHER. Then we
have one for the SUBVETS Anniver-
sary and Memorial Day.
This spring the City of Groton will be
removing and replacing the concrete
walkways to and in front of the Wall of
Honor. In addition they will be installing
a concrete pad for ceremonies will occur. We are working with the city so that
this work will not interfere with scheduled memorial services.
There’s always lots of work to do in
maintaining the grounds and the memorial in the standards deserving of a national memorial to our war dead and in
preparing the memorial for the various
memorial services and functions held
there. This takes volunteers and donations to support this work. The Memorial
Committee could always use more volunteers—especially younger volunteers.
As far as donations, they can be made
at any time. But again that’s what the
Annual Memorial Appeal and Raffle is
for. The Appeal and Raffle information
will be mailed out in early spring and the
raffle winner will be pulled at the July
meeting.
We encourage you to visit our memorial and to use it for various functions. Please just contact us first to
ensure there is no conflict with
someone else’s plans and that we
are not doing major work on the
day/time that you want to use it.

use the Memorial or for any questions or comments regarding the

Clubhouse Support
In mid-January you were informed by
letter that we needed your help to
cover some back IRS Taxes and associated penalties.
Tax calculation were re-computed
and the total amount of taxes owed
was $5,372.84. All back taxes and
required forms were submitted to the
IRS in early February. As soon as we
hear from the IRS we will pay whatever penalties are required.
In the meantime, the membership of
Groton Base responded in a very
positive way. As of this writing we
have received over $27,000 in donations from our generous membership
to help with the club bills. Money in
excess of the back taxes and penalties will be used to help pay bills associated with the clubhouse like electricity, heat, water, and insurance.
In addition we have taken some positive steps to help the situation down
the road. The Base Treasurer has
taken over payroll and associated
taxes.
Previously the bar paid most of the
utility bills associated with the club-
house. Now we are turning over the
profits from the club above payroll
and the cost of goods to the Base
Treasurer. He pays those utilities and
other bills with a combination of that
money and organizational money.
Here’s the catch. Base dues are $15
a person. With about 1500 duespaying members that’s only about
$22,500 in total funds available to
support base operations and the
clubhouse. Base dues are primarily
designed to cover the cost of operations for Groton Base newsletters,
etc. It’s our clubhouse. We will do
everything possible to cover the clubhouse expenses as well.
The more profit that the club can turn
over, the less that has to come out of
Groton Base operating funds. The
more members we have, the higher
the total funds available to support
base operations and the clubhouse.
The more members you sign up, the
better off we are. That’s one of the
reasons why we are so anal with
membership renewals. If we added
1,000 members to our roster that
would be $37,500, an increase of
about $15,000 that would be available to help with those expenses. The
EBOARD, BOT and I cannot do that.
It’s up to all of us to do what we can
in helping club business.
National was very concerned about
what liabilities they have with regards
to the clubhouse, expenses, etc. After reviewing our documentation with
regards to the mortgage, deed, insurance, and liquor license we found
that everything says USSVI and not
USSVI Groton Base. National has
good reason to be concerned.
The EBOARD is getting that documentation updated and changed to
USSVI Groton Base.
We will keep you informed of how
things are progressing, and I would
like to thank every member who has
helped us out in this time of need.
Regardless of the amount you donated to help us in supporting the club
through these challenging times and
issues the bottom line is that we
thank you for your help. We will get
better!

Following the ceremony there will be
a reception at the club with light hors
d'oeuvres and cash bar for all inductees and guests. Parking will be by
the National Submarine Memorial
with shuttle transportation to/from the
clubhouse.
If you will be in town the night before,
you and your guests can come down
to the SUBVETS clubhouse for an
inexpensive steak dinner. Advancepaid reservations are required.
Present members of the HOLLAND
CLUB and other interested members
are also welcome to attend the ceremony and encouraged to join us to
recognize these senior citizens of the
submarine force.
To attend, simply contact me with
your full name, date and place of birth
and full social security number for
access to the base. This information
is required by the base even though
you may have a military (retired) ID.
This is important so we have an idea
how many people will be attending.
Each month HOLLAND CLUB members get together at the club for
lunch. It’s a popular event that sells
out as soon as it’s publicized. Wives
and guests are welcome to accompany their HOLLAND CLUB member.
The cost is $6 each.

Tuesday of every month. Mark your

Submarine Qualification Recognition Program
Attention COs and COBs!
Do you know about our Submarine
Qualification and Recognition Program (SQRP)?
We would like the opportunity to
recognize your sailors with our
SQRP, but to do so we need your
support and involvement.
We need you or one of your Chief
Petty Officers to tell us that you
would like to recognize crew members who recently Qualified in Submarines at an upcoming meeting.
We need a list of the individuals including their full names and rates/
ranks at least one week prior to the
meeting that we will be recognizing
your sailors so that way we can prepare a certificate for them.
On meeting night (first Monday of
every month except when it falls on
a holiday), the crew members show
up before the meeting starts at 1830.
Usually the COB, CO, other crew
members and family accompany them.
We conduct the SQRP at the very
start of the meeting. The CO and COB
say a few words if desired. We all
sound off our names and boat and
year that we qualified. When the sailors hear some of the Qualification
years it really hits them. We are usually done by 1900 so all can depart or to
enjoy our facilities downstairs. Anyone
can stay for rest of the meeting.
Boats just returning from deployments
are the ideal candidates with numerous crew members who received their
dolphins for us to recognize. We look
forward to recognizing your sailors.
At the meeting on 7 Jan we recognized shipmates from the USS HARTFORD (SSN 768) who completed
Qualifications while on their deployment and shipmates recently Qualified
in Submarines on the USS SAN JUAN
(SSN 751).
At the March 4 meeting we recognized a shipmate from PCU NORTH
DAKOTA who completed his Qualifications while assigned to another submarine.
If you are in port when our meetings
are scheduled (Feb 4, Mar 4, Apr 1),
give the Base Commander a call and
allow us to recognize your sailors.

Clubhouse Cleanup
Our club gets cleaned thanks to our
shipmates on the Saturday Morning
Cleanup Crew who continually donate
time every weekend to clean our clubhouse and keep it looking good for our
members and guests. The club belongs to the membership, but cleanup
of the club is done by only a small
handful of hard-working, dedicated
volunteers. We can always use more
volunteers on a regular basis to clean.
You don’t have to be there every Saturday, just when you can. Extra bodies are always helpful, especially dur-
ing the winter.
Cleanup starts around 7am and is
usually completed by 10am for our
11am opening.
The clubhouse belongs to the membership, and at Groton Base we are
very fortunate in that we are the only
USSVI Base with its own clubhouse,
even 48 years after the organization
was formed. That is special.
We also schedule two Field Days during the year for the deep cleaning
including the outside grounds and the
upstairs Richard Higham Hall.
The next field day will be on Saturday
27 Apr from 0900 – 1200. This is just
in time for our club to look its best for
our guests attending for the Anniversary Celebration. The more members
who attend, the more that we can get
done. Hopefully we’ll get a good number of volunteers show up. If you can
be there to help us out, please let the
House Committee Chairman know in
advance. Please pitch in to keep your
club clean. If the membership does
not clean the clubhouse, it does not
get cleaned.

Base started accepting scholarship applications for 2013
on 1 March and will continue through
15 April 2013. Application, resume,
essay and all supporting documentation must be addressed to U.S. SUBVETS, Attention Scholarship Committee, 40 School Street, Groton, Ct.
06340. Applications must be received
by the closing date. Pay attention to
detail with your application.

Scholarship program. We hope this

are some tough economic times. We
are also aware that many of you are
supporting the Clubhouse Support

we have three primary
goals: Retention, Recovery
and Recruitment. These
goals should not just be the
Membership Committee’s
goals because retention,
recovery, and recruitment
are the responsibility of all
hands. We need to retain
the members we have, recover the ones we have
lost, and recruit new members whenever we have the
opportunity.
Over the past 8 months we
have been working on the
retaining, getting as many
members to renew as possible. Despite our best efforts we still lost 336 members. Some have rejoined.
Now it’s time to shift our
focus to Recovery and most
importantly Recruitment of
new members. Each of you
knows people who aren’t
members of SUBVETS.
Let’s work together on recruiting some of them to be
members like you.
We do more than process
membership renewals. We
update address changes,
email changes, and basically update the national database and our local database with all your information. This can be done
by several methods. You
can update it yourself on
the USSVI National Database at USSVI.ORG. You
can update your information
by emailing me at membership_Chair@subvetsgroton.
org. You can update your
information at the club either when you renew or just
by dropping it in the Membership Box at the end of
the bar.

We don’t know when you
get advanced, when you
are assigned to a new boat,
or when you move or
change email addresses.
We are dependent on you
to provide that information
for us. Because our national
organization is a war veterans group it is very important that we track your
dates of military service and
we get credit if your years
of service are between: WWII (1941-46),
Korea (1950-55), Viet Nam
(1964-75) or Iraq (1990now).
If you’re not sure what we
have on you, just contact
me or visit your profile in
the national database.
Any time we make a
change like when you renew, we send you an email
with all of your information.
That lets you know we processed your renewal, and it
gives you the opportunity to
review what information we
have on you and what
might need to be updated.
Renewal Notes:
It’s never too early to pay
your dues in advance. We
have members paid out till
2049.
If your mailing address
changes please let us know
about it as soon as possi-
ble. It’s very costly for us
and National when addresses are incorrect to get our
newsletters and American
Submariners delivered.
Boat Notes and the American Submariner are sent
via Bulk Mail. This is at a
reduced rate. Bulk rate mail
is not forwarded to any new
addresses. The sole responsibility for correct addresses is the member’s.

cost is that when you don’t
get your newsletter you
miss information about your
organization, and we lose

2013 Groton Base Nominations/Elections
Groton Base has elections every year,
however each year we alternate the
officers being elected so that not all
four Base Officers are elected or relieved together. It allows for some stability. In odd numbered years the positions of Base Commander and Base
Treasurer are up for election, and in
even years the Base Vice Commander
and the Base Treasurer are up for
election. Additionally, in odd years the
members of the Board of Trustees/
Club Officers are up for elections. This
year the membership will be voting for
Base Commander, Base Treasurer
and Club Officers/Board of Trustees.
Nominations for both elections were
open from January – 08 March. The
nominations for both elections were
closed on 8 March to allow the ballots
to get in the newsletter without delaying the newsletter.
These elections for Base Officers and
Club Officers/Board of Trustees are
completely separate elections with
different criteria and different voting
eligibility as explained below.
Base Officer Elections: Base Officer
Elections are to vote for the leadership of Groton Base also known as
the Executive Board (EBOARD). The
EBOARD (Base Commander, Base
Vice Commander, Base Secretary
and Base Treasurer) are the officers
representing Groton Base to the National Organization of USSVI. According to the Base and National Bylaws only Regular Members (nonAssociate Members) are eligible to
run for the Base Officer positions and
only Regular Members (nonAssociate Members) may vote in the
Base Officer elections.
Club Officer/Board of Trustees (BOT)
Elections: The Club Officer/BOT
elections are to vote for the leadership responsible for the management
of the clubhouse. The Club Officers/
BOT report to the EBOARD and the
Membership of Groton Base. As required by the State of CT this is a
separate leadership team from the
EBOARD. The Club Membership
consists of all members of Groton
Base including Associate Members.
All members of the Club including
Associate Members are eligible to run
for the Club Officers/BOT, and they
are all eligible to vote in the election
of Club Officers/BOT. This was a
change implemented this past fall
when we finally made our Associate
Members legal with the state of CT.
There are two ballots included in this
newsletter, one for the election of the
nine Club Officers/BOT (page 19) and
one for the election of the Base Officer elections (page 21). Voting
opens on 1 April and closes at midnight 31 May. The ballots will be
counted over that weekend and the
results announced at the June membership meeting on 03 June. The new
Base Officers and Club Officers/BOT
will be sworn in at the July meeting on
1 Jul.
You can use the ballots enclosed in
this newsletter and drop it off or mail it
to the club or you can vote electronically. The URL for electronic voting

How you vote is unimportant. This is
the leadership for your organization
and your club. The important thing is

Tom Barnhart As a retired Master
Chief Petty Officer, assigned to three
submarines as Chief of the Boat,
Squadron Two C/MC, and C/MC on
an LHA these are just some of my
qualifications as an organizer. I also
am a Past Post Commander of VFW
Post 1673. Additionally, I have been
a project manager at a couple of firms
managing contracts in the millions of
dollars.
Rick Boorman I gladly accept the
nomination. By way of background, I
was on the team that conducted the
first audit of the club as directed by
Mike Munhall when he was Base
Commander. In addition, I have been
a part of the Membership Committee
since 2007 with primary responsibility
for entering all the dues transactions
into the National website. I also have
over 30 years executive business experience.
Rob Davis I am presently a member
of the Board of Trustees. I have been
a member of SubVets for over 5
years, and have been a regular member of the Saturday morning clean-up
crew for as long as I have been a
member of Sub Vets. I assisted Mike
Munhall in resurfacing the galley floor,
and have participated in numerous
club repair activities. I dine at the club
at least twice a week, and have a
vested interest in seeing the club succeed. I am also a member of the
Scholarship committee. I also participate in the base Memorial services,
accompanying the Piper on the snare
drum.
Obedia Hill I believe that I can contribute a positive approach to affect
the solving of problems concerning
the Club/bar and Sub Vets. These
entities have to complement each other to insure a reasonable degree of
profitability. I have the attitude that
there isn't any problem that can't be
resolved without creativity, successful
mission oriented goals and the full
under-standing and cooperation of all
concerned. I would like to help.

Norman Kuzel As a member of
SVGB since 2004 I have experienced many changes in the club;
some good others not so good. It
is my belief that new faces and
ideas can improve our situation. Because I am active as a
Docent, SubScol Graduation member, K4K and Honors Detail, I am
exposed to a myriad of issues that
can be resolved through discussion and appropriate action. The
fact that I was nominated by my
peers, someone has faith in my
ability.
Mike Lopeman I think I could be a
good steward of the club and make
the club and organization work better
together. I work at SUPSHIP
Groton and am around for all to see
and make suggestions to. I would
appreciate a vote for me for the BOT
to keep the club running.
Charles Murray Since joining the
Groton Base, I have tried to both
learn and support the
organization as a volunteer and
committee member. I believe the
Club is an important part of the organization in that it provides the environment for qualified submariners
to continue and build long term
friendships.
I have over 30 years of management
experience and more years as a volunteer within the community. Over
the last 2 years, I helped write the
Audit PPM, suggest changes to the
by-laws, been member of the Finance & Audit Committee and
worked on various committees. I
have observed how hard both employees and members have worked
to maintain the Club. I am willing to
work as hard to help the BOT insure
that we have a successful Club. I
believe to be success we need to
work together within the Base to
have a Club that offers services that
both young and old subvets will find
desirable and encourage frequent
participation.
Robert Perritt I joined USSVI
Groton Base December 1998, became a Life Member in 2004. Several years ago after being asked by the
Base Command and PW Louthain, I
assume duties of the Base Webmaster. Since then, my wife and I have
donated the cost of maintaining the
website and the email server to
Groton Base. The website was designed to enable authorized members
of the Base to upload documents and
pictures, to add new site pages and in
general, build it to suit the Base. The
success of the website I believe is by
not having one person as a bottleneck, but enabling a team to run
it. Mike Munhall has done a great job
of keeping it going.
In 2011, I became the Membership
Chairman. During this time we have
developed two new membership
bookkeeping applications and many
reports which carry on the theme of
being open and available to Base officers and select members. Our database is fully synchronized with USSVI
National’s website to greatly improve
the accuracy of membership information in both places. The driving
priority is to move away from a private
Access program on someone’s hard
drive to a system where information is
made available – on demand, any
time of the day.
As a member of the BOT, I will push
to continue the same goal – make the
BOT fully visible to all members, completely transparent. We will use the
website and email system to promote
club-house activities. I also believe
we should look into outsourcing payroll to ADP, and to utilize QuickBooks
Online – this too will allow multiple
authorized people to have access to
BOT records. I also believe that because all members were asked to help
the Clubhouse in the January appeal,
all members have a right to know what
their donations were or are planned to
be used for. Good news or bad, all
members will have a picture on how
their Clubhouse is doing.
Dennis Popp I believe my background and education may be of some
help to SVGB. It is certainly different
than most members. I have been an
active associate member for several
years and use the clubhouse and its
facilities often. I enjoy the club, its
members and have said many times
that I would do whatever I can to help
out. I feel this is an opportunity to help
a group of people I care about carry

Frank Rowe PNC(SS) Frank Rowe,
USN (Ret). Enlisted in January 1965
and retired from PSD in April 1988.
After nine years with the Aviation
community was accepted for and
qualified in submarines, serving as
yeoman on four SSBN's and leading
Yeoman on SSBNs 657 and
659. Shortly after retirement earned
an Associate Degree in Business
Administration (Public Administration)
from Mohegan Community College
(Three Rivers). Served as Senior

Shipmate in the Spotlight: Jack Gallimore
Our Shipmate in
the Spotlight for
this edition of
Boat Notes is
shipmate Jack
Gallimore.
At the January
2013 Monthly
meeting it was
announced that
the EBOARD
had selected Jack as the recipient of
the Chris Quijada Distinguished Member of the Year for 2012.
Jack has been very active in many
areas and contributes to the success
of SUBVETS Groton Base. He has
served as the Chairman of the Submarine Guest Speaker Program for
several years. He coordinates guest
speakers from SUBVETS to speak at
various SUBSCHOOL Graduations
and he coordinates the SUBVETS
who conduct the Tolling of the Boats
at each Basic Enlisted Submarine
School and Submarine Officer Basic
and Advanced Courses. Jack also
serves as the Assistant Base Chaplain
and a member of the Honors Detail
and the Groton Base Saluting Battery.
Jack is very active with Groton Base
and participates in our parades, and
memorial services and attends most
meetings.
Jack Gallimore is highly deserving
of the recognition as the Shipmate
in the Spotlight and the recipient of
the SUBVETS Groton Base Chris
Quijada Distinguished Member of
the Year Award for 2012. Congratulations, Jack, and thanks for all that
you do to support SUBVETS Groton
Base and for your leadership within
Groton Base and the submarine
community. Keep it up. We need
more members like you to be active
in our programs adding to the successes of SUBVETS Groton Base.
“Silent Service” Plates: Harrison Solt
For over two
years USSVI
tried to create
a motorcycle
Silent Service
license
plate. This
process was
before the
Transportation
Committee. We had legislative support. All area senators and representatives supported the plate and some
gave testimony in favor and greased
the necessary wheels to keep the process moving. It was determined that
new legislation was not necessary. Senator Maynard requested
DMV prototype the plate to insure required number of characters and size
could be maintained. That was done
and it was determined that they
could do it. All that remained to be
done was for DMV to modify the M37 form (special interest plate application) to include the motorcycle license plate selection and any other
data that changed as a result of the
motorcycle plate creation. Well, time
went by and no modified form. I repeatedly contacted the Commissioner’s office and the Special Interest
Plate Group. The Commissioner’s
office remained silent. The Special
Interest Plate Group kept saying they
had not yet been told to change the
form so they could not. Out of frustration we penned a mild complaint
letter to the Commissioner with CC’s
to the senators, representatives, and
governor. Some time thereafter we
received a letter from the Commissioner’s office (lawyer) that in the
eleventh hour the commissioner had
decided it was not cost effective to
create the motorcycle plate, and if
DMV did, other organizations would
want to do a motorcycle plate as well
(currently there are no special interest motorcycle plates). As a result
Commissioner Currey made the decision to stop the process. We have
written letters since trying to turn
things around but have not heard
back from anyone. Feel free to contact your representatives and voice
your displeasure with the actions
involved. Contact me for additional

Board of Trustees
As the Chairman of the Board of
Trustees I would like to thank Karen
Torkelson for her many years of
dedicated service to Submarine
Veterans Inc. and all the patrons of
40 School Street. Karen, you put
forth a great deal of personal time
and yourself into a job very well
done!
Karen has tendered her resignation.
The Board of Trustees now has the
task of trying to find a new bar manager/permittee. We are asking the
membership to help us identify suit-
able candidates to interview and
select from.
The bar manager/permittee’s duty
is to ensure that all operations of
the Club are within the legal requirements of the State of CT. He
is also responsible for the day to
day management of the Club and
for the daily operations of running
the business of the Club within the
requirements set forth by the BOT
to include both the bar and the
galley. He is responsible for the
conduct of employees, customer
service, inventory, maintenance and
repair of all plant equipment and
facilities, and cleanliness of the
club. This is a salaried position;
however, we do not offer health
benefits.

SUBVETS 49th Anniversary Celebration
The USSVI Groton Base 49th Anniversary Weekend is rapidly approaching. It is scheduled for 02-04
May. Groton Base, the “First and
Finest,” is proud to continue to host
this great event with the support
from Naval Submarine School and
various entities from Naval Submarine Base. This event is a great opportunity for all submariners to
come back to where we all got started, both in submarines and in
USSVI, to see the advances we
have made in submarine technology, to perpetuate the memories of
all submariners and to share each
other’s company as submariners.
No politics or meetings normally
conducted at the National Convention, just good times and great
memories.
We hope that you will be part of the
action and gather. Attend our
events and tell your stories and
listen to others. Come and enjoy
the special submarine camaraderie
of your “Brothers of the Phin. “
We would like all of our members
to gather often, but if you can only
do it once in a while the Anniversary Weekend is one you should
consider.

2013 USSVI Groton Base Scholarship Golf Tourney
The Scholarship Golf Tournament
on May 2, 2013 kicks off our Groton
Base USSVI Anniversary Weekend
Celebration. This tournament is our
major fundraising event for the
Groton Base Scholarship Fund.
We will be at River Ridge Golf
Course in Griswold with a scramble
format. The cost is $120, which includes greens fees, coffee and pastries for breakfast, turn-around
lunch, cart, awards banquet and
prizes at the course clubhouse. We
have worked to make this golf tour-
nament better than in the
past. For all of our members and
friends who donate money each
year, we will have signage displayed at the greens and tees with
your name or the name of your
company. We must limit the golfers to 36 four person teams (144
people). Check in must be completed by 08:30 with shotgun start
at 9:00 am.
Be generous, get involved, and
please make the commitment today. Come have a great time and
help us raise the funds necessary
for our scholarship program.
We are looking for volunteers to assist with the golf tournament. We
prefer to have previous Groton Base
scholarship recipients and their parents or sponsors as our volunteers.

Scholarship Donations/Golf Tournament Sponsorship
Our Annual Anniversary Celebration/Golf Tournament serves as the
principal fundraiser for our scholar-
ship program. Last year between
the golf sponsors and the anniversary raffles almost $23,000 was
raised. Our goal for this year is
$25,000.

appeal letter. It is our hope that
you will take the time to support us
this year either with a donation or
as a sponsor for the golf tournament.
We have sent sponsorship appeal
letters to the entire Groton Base
membership, many local businesses and many others as well asking
them to be sponsors or make donations. Before we can depend on
outside sources to support our golf
tournament and our scholarship
program, we have to depend on
our own membership.
Sponsors can be individuals or the
sponsorship can come from a
group or another organization that
you may be a member of. If you
own a company, sponsorship can
come from your company. If you
know someone who would be interested in sponsoring a tee or a
green, please pass this on.
If you do not want to be a sponsor
for the golf tournament but would
like to send a donation that is fine
too. Donations can be made online
at the subvetsgroton.org web page
(select Dues and Donations tab),
at the club or by mail to the club.
There is no donation too small.
They all count. Your support and
donations are appreciated and go
towards helping our membership
build the pot and give meaningful
scholarships to children, grandchildren, and stepchildren of members
of SUBVETS Groton Base. Having
a scholarship program for Groton
Base kids is a great thing, but you
can’t give out scholarships without
funds.
The Groton Base Scholarship Fund
is established under the USSV
Charitable Foundation, making all
donations charitable donations
which are tax deductible under IRS
Code 501(c)(3). Many companies
you work for or retired from have
charity programs in place; if you
make a donation to a qualified charitable organization such as ours, they
will match your donation. That doubles anything you might consider
sending.

Base’s Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team endeavors to bring comfort and joy to
children and advance USSVI’s creed
and purpose.
In April we will conduct two visits to
child care facilities. One will be to
The Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in Babylon, NY. This visit
will help our shipmates at USSVI’s
Long Island Base start a Kap(SS) 4
Kid(SS) Program.
The other visit will be to Saint Rafael
Hospital in New Haven, CT. This visit
will be to children (ages 3 to 18
years) in the hospital’s in-patient
Child Psychiatric Program.

by the SUBVETS. We also give them
brochures from
the Groton, CT,
Submarine
Force Museum
and USS Nautilus Submarine. We let
them know that
they will get
special treatment from
SUBVET docents if they wear their
caps when they visit.
We share lots of information about
submarines, submariners and our
history with the children and all who
are in attendance, which significantly
advances the USSVI Creed.
