who applies. The program allows students to be a
Th
member of The Mary C at no charge until their graduation from
high school. With this membership students are entitled to discounts on every
class as well as on summer camps. That means savings on all classes and camps for
every child for years to come! This year we are introducing the Delta Music Institute camp,
more children’s art camps, and more Culinary offerings for youth as well.
Here are some of our goals with the Young Ambassador program:
1. More student-friendly program design: We want to engage the members to help
us in creating programs they will find fun and valuable. Young people are our best
resource to gauge the effectiveness of our offerings designed specifically for them.
2. Promote a long-term relationship with the arts: We want to establish long term
relationships with students so that each generation will pass on the importance of
involvement in the arts to their children to continue these traditions.
3. Enhance student performance: Studies indicate that when students are involved
in the arts, their scores improve overall, even in subjects like math and science. The
programs offered at The Mary C enhance and partner with school instruction, and
area school superintendents support and endorse the program.
We are fortunate to have received a jumpstart in funding from the Bacot/McCarty Foundation
to kick-start the program with a $2,500 donation. Any child who applies, in any school
district or location, can be a Young Ambassador. Membership is free and membership
cards are available at The Mary C.
Please come by today to receive your child’s free membership.

Creative Icon Writing with Encaustic Artist Kat Fitzpatrick
Craving more stillness? The language of icons is a language of prayer. Returning to ancient encaustic images for
inspiration, we will create (or to use the traditional term “write”) a modern icon that resonates with our own understanding
of the mystery that shines through us all. Using a combination of encaustic bees wax medium, cut paper, transfer
methods, mixed media and metallic leaf, we will create encaustic collages of a personal nature. Artists at all skill levels
and religious persuasions will be welcomed. Each student is responsible for bringing their own array of decorative papers,
flat ornament (old costume jewelry for example), buttons, feathers, lace, trim, doilies...the list of possibilities is endless
and as wide as your imagination! You don’t have to bring ALL of the above; these are just ideas to get you thinking! The
point is to have choices to make the icon relevant to YOU so that whenever you look into the face of your icon in years to
come, a sense of playfulness and gratitude at being alive will be triggered. Artist Kat Fitzpatrick will provide boards, tools
and art supplies as well as her traveling collection of ephemera to compliment your goodies from home.

The Resurrectionist by Matthew Guinn
Author Talk & Book Signing
Join us as we welcome Jackson, Mississippi author Matthew Guinn to launch his novel
The Resurrectionist. Set in the present day and in the mid-1800’s the story features
dual historical scandals. A contemporary young medical resident at a southern medical
school finds himself facing a moral dilemma when a campus renovation unearths the
bones of dissected African American slaves. Author Matthew Guinn deftly weaves
historical and fictional truth, salted with contemporary social satire and traditional
Southern Gothic into a tale of shocking crimes and exquisite revenge. This absorbing
and entertaining moral parable of the south blends modern day cover up politics with a
dark historical past that reveals the truth behind Civil War-era “resurrectionists.”
