cultural center for arts and education
november & December
The Mary C. is for Everyone!
No matter your skill level, member or not, everyone is invited to get involved
at the Mary C. Being creative is often just about the desire to “make
stuff.” To get your hands dirty and find joy in the creative process. So we
have added more “make-it-and-take it” classes from fly-tying to batik to
making books and journals. We are hosting holiday craft camps for both
children and adults. Our youth programming has exploded with activities
for all age groups in visual, culinary and performing arts. A new literary
performance program is in the works. Sheila Thornburg, our programming
manager, just returned from PAE, SouthArt’s annual performing arts
booking showcase, and is supercharging our entertainment program to
offer a diverse array of concerts and performances.
The enthusiasm is spreading. Not a day goes by when we don’t have
someone drop in and say they cannot believe how much is going on
here and how there are so many fun classes they want to take them
all. And The Mary C staff feels the same way. Just ask Hans, our new
marketing manager. He’s jumped in head on, taking pottery, botanical
drawing, guitar lessons and more! Supporters and volunteers are calling
and asking how they can help. Performers are eager to appear on The
Mary C stage. Anita Arguelles, our director of visual and culinary arts,
has reached out to more area artisans to join us to for a startling array
of programs and invited guest instructors back by popular demand from
our students.
The Mary C is a fun place! Settle down with a cup of coffee or cocoa,
peruse the catalog and plan your fun at The Mary C. There’s something
for everyone.

Printmaking
“No Fear Monotype” Workshop with Akua Waterbased Inks
Don’t let the word “monotype” scare you off. You will feel liberated by the
creative and forgiving nature of this “printmaking” process. This low-tech
method utilizing layering, stenciling, painting, drawing and even collaging
processes will get your creative juices following. You will learn the subtractive and additive processes of making an image on the plate as well as
incorporating chine colle’ (paper collage) and best of all, you will be working
with the amazing water-based AKUA inks. They produce beautiful intense

printing press.

Saturday, December 1
A new Mary C tradition, we’ll be using a
template to start our own version of the
vintage 1940’s Putz village, recalling when
families created Christmas village scenes
made from sparkly, cardboard houses,
churches and other buildings. Christmas
lights were placed inside to provide
illumination in the tiny colored cellophane
windows and were decorated with micadusted roofs to give the appearance of snow.
Now highly collectible, the originals can be
hard to find, so we’ll be making our own!

Afternoon Session: 1:30pm – 4:00pm

Joey Rice: Traveling Songs
September 21 - December 29
Traveling Songs is an exhibit of mixed media art by Ocean Springs artist Joey Rice. Her diverse
collection of artwork showcases the use of handmade paper, bamboo, silk & natural fibers, masonite,
and several other mixed media. Each piece strives to challenge and explore the mysteries of abstraction
through experimentation.
Traveling Songs, the title of this exhibit, refers to troubadours who once roamed
medieval Europe, telling tales and composing songs wherever they found an audience. Their
compositions might be slyly subversive or courtly, romantic and/or religious, and often contained
coded messages.

Registration Policy
All enrollments for classes and purchases of event
tickets require pre-registration and pre-payment.
You may register online 24/7, or by phone or in
person during office hours. Early registration is
recommended. In the event that the minimum
number of participants is not met for a class,
instructors may need to cancel the class. We are
all really bummed when that happens. If a class
for which you have registered is postponed or
cancelled, you will be notified.
Waiting List
Most classes have a maximum number of
participants. If a class you select is full, we will
happily place your name on a waiting list and
notify you if there is an opening. But to be placed
on the waiting list, you’ll need to call us or stop by.
While our super advanced ticketing system will not
enroll you if a class is full, it does not yet have the
capability to generate a waiting list.
Refunds
Full refunds are given when a class or event is
cancelled by the Mary C when the enrollment
minimum is not reached. If you must cancel your
registration due to a family emergency, medical
reasons or the need to go on a really cool vacation,
we will be happy to move your registration into
another class. No course credits will be granted.
Our classes often fill early, so if you must cancel
please try to do so in a timely manner so we can
offer the position to someone on our waiting list. Our
instructors are awesome, and we want to keep their
classes filled so they keep coming back to the Mary
C. On the rare occasion that you cannot find another
class to join, we will issue a full refund.
Participation Policies
We love our wonderful students, especially children!
But the Mary C cannot assume responsibility for
unattended children on the premises, so please
help us with ensuring there are no early drop offs
or late pick-ups of your child. We also request that
you will bring your child into the building to see
them safely to their class. Children brought onto the
premises who are not enrolled in a class remain the
responsibility of the parents.
Become A Member!
While it is not necessary to be a member of the
Mary C in order to take classes, membership entitles
you to reduced prices for classes. Plus, you’ll
receive invitations to Gallery openings and special
events. Your membership is important to us, and we
appreciate your support.
