125 years Hermann Sons Grand Lodge U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, center, was in San Antonio Sept. 3 and paid a visit to the Hermann Sons Grand Lodge. Back in April he presented a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol to Grand President Buddy Preuss and wife Elizabeth in honor of the Grand Lodge's 125th anniversary. It was then President Preuss invited Doggett to visit the home office next time he was in San Antonio. Employees gathered for a photo with Doggett and the flag he gifted the Grand Lodge. www.hermannsons.org For information on Hermann Sons insurance products, fraternal benefits, calendar of events, latest news, photos, visit: VOL. 119 • SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS • SEPTEMBER 2015 - NO. 1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE GRAND LODGE, ORDER OF THE SONS OF HERMANN IN THE STATE OF TEXAS HERMANN SONS NEWS Celebrating Grand Lodge has proud history of service EDITOR’S NOTE: On March 27, 1890, the eight Hermann Sons lodges that existed in Texas at the time came together to form a “home office” and thus the Grand Lodge was founded. That was 125 years ago. For the past eight months, The Hermann Sons News has marked the occasion with a series of articles on the history of Hermann Sons. The series culminates this month with an article by Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss. SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons is a fraternal benefit society, which is defined as a not-for-profit, member owned organization that has a representative form of government and offers insurance to its members, who share a common bond or purpose. It is organized in a system of lodges to carry out social, intellectual, educational, charitable, benevolent and patriotic purposes, and offers mutual aid programs for the benefit of its members and the community at large. Unlike commercial companies whose profits benefit the stakeholder, we are member owned and our profits are returned to our members in unique ways. In its rich 125-year history, the Hermann Sons Grand Lodge has proudly served tens of thousands of Texans of all ages and in many different ways. Its life insurance and annuity products have served to protect the financial well-being of its members while See ANNIVERSARY, Pg. 2 Celebration Recommend to win in Floresville! set for Oct. 10 FLORESVILLE – Hundreds of Hermann Sons members will gather at the Floresville Event Center Saturday, Oct. 10, for the Grand Lodge’s 125th Anniversary Celebration. A full afternoon and evening of entertainment has been planned. The doors open at 2 p.m. Entertainment starts at 3 p.m. and will include a performance by the Hermann Sons Square Dancers. Also performing will be a group of Hermann Sons dance instructors and a group of dancers from the Kirby School of Dance. The program begins at 3:30 p.m. During the program the 2015 Hermann Sons Fraternalist of the Year will be honored and lodges will be recognized for their Join Hands Day projects. See CELEBRATION, Pg. 15 SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons members attending the Grand Lodge’s 125th Anniversary Celebration in Floresville in October will have a chance to show off their basketball skills and help Hermann Sons grow. Grand Vice President-Fraternal Tim Kolbe has announced that he is taking the “Go for the Goal: 125 in 2015” Campaign on the road for the celebration. Those attending are asked to bring with them the name of a prospective new member. This prospective new member must be an adult and “someone to whom you have already been speaking about Hermann Sons and the benefits of life insurance protection,” Grand Vice President Kolbe added. “That recommendation will earn you a chance to shoot a basket,” he explained. “Make the basket and you will receive a Hermann Sons koozie – specially made for this celebration.” And your name will be entered in a drawing for a $125 gift card to be given away that day. Only those who recommend a new adult member that day will be eligible for this special Celebration Day drawing. He emphasized that those who turn in a recommendation also will be entered in the regular “Go for the Goal: 125 in 2015” Campaign that could earn them a $125 gift card at the end of the year. Today there are more than 70,000 Hermann Sons members and 135 local lodges across the state. The lodges are located in big cities and small towns and the members come from all walks to life. While many of our members today are not of German ancestry we are still united by the noble attributes of the German immigrant – financial security for families, quality family life and community support. Each year, Hermann Sons members volunteer hundreds of hours of their time and donate tens of thousands of dollars to people and organizations in their communities. Fraternalism began by people with common interests pooling their resources for the benefit of all. Today, we look at fraternalism as people with different backgrounds, from different cultures, coming together and realizing that we all have the same basic needs. Each member, regardless of their level of activity, can be proud that through belonging they improve the quality of life for members and communities in which we all live, work and play. This year, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary of the Grand Lodge, we are reminded of the importance of heritage and family, and how they have helped shape who we are today. I am proud of the past and excited about the future of our great organization. a noTe aBoUT German TeXanS Earlier this month, Elizabeth and I were invited to attend the opening reception of the German-Texan Heritage Society conference. It was held at the German Free School in Austin. I was the guest of Henrietta Jo Peebles Adams, the granddaughter of our second Grand President, Julius Schuetze, who was the first teacher at the school. We shared stories of Schuetze and his contributions to Hermann Sons. Education was a primary concern for the new German immigrants who arrived in Texas in the 1840s and 1850s. Although Texas did not have a system of free public education at that time, it did offer subsidies for students attending private tuition schools who could not pay. When the German Free School opened in 1858, it was the first chartered school in Austin, incorporated by an act of the Texas Legislature. Today the building offices the GermanTexan Heritage Society along with a library on German-Texan topics. The building and grounds also function as a cultural center for Texans of German descent and is the site of an annual Maifest, Oktoberfest and Christmas market. Fraternally, Buddy Preuss Grand President/CEO Grand President Buddy Preuss visits with Henrietta Jo Peebles adams, the granddaughter of Julius Schuetze, the second Grand President, during a reception sponsored by the GermanTexan Heritage Society. September 2015 – Hermann SonS newS – Page 3 OFFICIAL BULLETIN Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer Life Insurance Awareness Month in September alerts all of us to review our life insurance needs and make sure our insurance policies are current with updated beneficiaries, names, etc. Hermann Sons agents are ready to assist in making the most beneficial financial plans or you and your family. German-American Day observed annually on Oct. 6 celebrates German-American heritage. On that date in 1683, 13 German families from Krefeld, near the Rhine, landed in Philadelphia, Penn., and founded Germantown, Penn., the first German settlement in the original 13 American colonies. Hermann Sons is traced back to New York City when in 1840 a group of men of German descent formed a brotherhood, named in honor of Hermann the Cherusker, an early German hero recognized for his leadership and valor. MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY Saturday, Oct. 24, is Make A Difference Day. Lodges continue to reach out in communities on this day to help others through service activities such as a food drive, nursing home visits, working at a food bank, holding a blood drive or cleaning/landscaping a community park or stretch of highway. There are many ways to help others on this day and, through community service, fraternalists open up their hearts and minds and reach out to others in need. DANCE SEASON & MEMBERSHIP It has been a busy month for the Membership Department with the influx of junior applications. September opens a new dance season. While new junior members are welcomed into our ranks, let’s all make an effort to remind the parents of these members that Hermann Sons offers life insurance for all family members and invite them to join too. LOCAL LODGE SUBSIDY The Grand Committee has approved the 2015 local lodge subsidy. The subsidy should be in the individual lodge bank accounts by now by direct deposit. This subsidy is based on both adult and junior membership in good standing and is to be used by the local lodges for the growth of membership through special events, lodge activities and community service projects. A portion of the subsidy should also be used for the benefit of junior members possibly for scholarships, recognition for dance and camp participation or for development of special junior event days. Lodges are asked to return the form in the lodge information booklet that will document how the local lodge used the money and results from the activities. OUR FUTURE We have a lot of information to share with our non-member friends, neighbors and relatives on Hermann Sons. Support your organization with referrals. Local lodges are assigned membership goals for the year. The year is well over halfway through. How is your lodge doing? Has it met its goal? The Marketing Department offered workshops this past summer for all of our agents so they may better serve you and those whom you recommend for membership. We’re counting on you! 'Go for the Goal' game planned for Floresville Cont'd. from Pg. 1 He added that the new member recommendation could be any adult – the parent of a junior member, an adult child who is not a member or someone you know from work or church. “Adult members are the backbone of Hermann Sons,” Grand Vice President Kolbe said. “Our adult members serve as mentors and role models for our junior members and they are vital to the future of our organization.” But even those attending who don’t recommend someone for membership will be able to play the game if they make a donation to the Children’s Alliance of South Texas, the place in Floresville where “trauma ends and justice and healing begin.” Children who have been the victim of abuse of any kind are brought to the Alliance in a time of crisis. But popcorn can be a healthy addition to anyone’s diet. Recent studies have indicated that popcorn can be quite healthy so long as it’s not smothered in salt, sugar or other flavorings. Popcorn is a whole grain that contains plenty of fiber and anti- Medical Notes oxidants. Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, reported in 2012 that popcorn may contain just as many, if not more, healthful antioxidants as fruits and vegetables. After grinding up the popped kernels and hulls, then simulating the digestion process, Vinson discovered roughly 1.5 percent by weight of air-popped popcorn is made up of polyphenols. Polyphenols can help prevent damage to human cells and can help fight disease, including can- cer. Polyphenols are considered by some to be more potent than vitamins C or E. Polyphenols are concentrated in the hull of the popcorn, so it’s important to eat them, and not just the fluffy popped center, for maximum health benefits. Popcorn is full of dietary fiber, which helps a person feel full and also has other benefits. Men and women are advised to consume 38 and 25 grams, respectively, of dietary fiber each day. Popcorn contains roughly one gram of dietary fiber per cup, helping to keep the digestive system regular. Popcorn also can reduce cholesterol levels and help regulate blood sugar.
