Pet-A-Palooza a Huge Success
Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center
held their annual Pet-A-Palooza on August 16 and 17.
This spectacular event saw many dogs and cats find
loving homes and enabled the shelter to save even
more lives as a result.
An exciting array of activities took place including
their first annual Doggie Swimsuit Contest, which
saw pooches of all shapes and sizes strut their stuff on
the catwalk, showing off their finest summer beachwear. There was music, martial arts demonstrations,
reps from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
canine division, and legendary former NHL player
Gilles Villemure was on hand to greet fans and sign
autographs, along with Dr. Elizabette Cohen, host of
WCBS 880’s Your Healthy and Happy Pet, who
signed copies of her book “Most of My Patients Wear
Fur.”
On Sunday, August 17, Little Shelter was transformed as animal lovers came from near and far to
celebrate the bond they have with their beloved pets
at the Annual Blessing of the Animals service. Each
pet received an individual blessing.
Throughout the weekend visitors feasted on a
scrumptious barbeque, browsed the hundreds of bas-

For thousands of years, Jews have memorialized
their loved ones by participating in the Yizkor
(remembrance) prayer service during Yom Kippur.
This year, Jews will have another way to remember
ancestors – with a 21st century twist.
Officials with Till120.com has launched a special section on their website in which Jews worldwide can post memorials – at no cost – to remember their loved ones in preparation for the High
Holiday season. The memorials can include photos,
messages and whatever other information that family and friends consider important during Yom
Kippur, which begins sundown on October 8.
As we approach the High Holidays, specifically
Yom Kippur, jews remember their departed beloved
relatives. Now there is an opportunity, through
Till120.com, to share the uniqueness of our
beloved with the Jewish community at large.
Inspirational stories that motivate and inspire others
can be an everlasting tribute.
As part of the website, online visitors can make
secure donations to nationally-respected charities
on behalf of their loved ones. In addition, they can
fill out online Yartzheit (time of year) reminders that
will be emailed when it is the time of the year to
light the Yartzheit candle.
In the Jewish religion, it is important to remember those who have passed, their mitzvahs and how
they touched people’s lives. This Yom Kippur, there
is another way to memorialize these special people,
through the advancement of the Internet.
The service will be available throughout the year,
including the three other times during the calendar
that Jews say the Yizkor service, in which God is
asked to remember and grant repose for the souls of
departed loved ones.
Till120.com has many other services at no
charge, including a system that notifies users when
someone in their community has died, so they can
attend the funeral. The website also provides online
condolence cards and a system to automatically
send food baskets to a family sitting shiva, as part of
its community service.
The name of the website, Till120.com, comes
from a traditional Jewish blessing, “may you live till
120.” It refers to the age Moses is said to have lived
to and is meant to wish someone a happy, healthy
and long life.
Editor’s Note: Till120.com is a one-of-a-kind website dedicated to informing the Jewish community across the world about
the passing of community members. Easily accessible to users
at no cost, the website also provides ways to send condolences, donate to charity in the name of loved ones, create
permanent online memorials and receive yahrzeit reminders.

Midnight Oils Exhibition at the Mills Pond House Gallery
This Halloween season, The
Smithtown Township Arts Council
will present MIDNIGHT OILS, a
fine arts exhibition celebrating
frightening subject matters cast in
a philosophic, romantic, or
humorous light. The exhibit will
be on view at The Mills Pond
House Gallery, 660 Route 25A in
St. James, October 4 through
November 1, 2008. The public is
invited to an opening reception
Saturday, October 4, 5-7 p.m. to
meet exhibiting artists and view
their work.
The exhibition will include a
gargantuan 7-foot-tall statue, as
well as many other captivating
works by local, national and
international artists. Juror Alain
Khadem, a Long Island-based
artist, specializes in vantisa art, a
form that marries well with the
spirit of Halloween. He was
recently featured in The New
York Times as one of the national
exhibitors in STAC’s Digital Long
Island exhibition.
Midnight Oils will be part of
THE FULL MOON FESTIVAL on
The Mills Pond House grounds.
During this month-long celebration of Halloween Lore, the
Smithtown Township Arts Council
will be sponsoring its highly popular HOUSE OF HORRORS
October 4-31, 2008. Khadem
will be hosting Omnia Vanitas, a
flash presentation focusing on the
significance of iconic objects and
symbols in vanitas art, and there
will be a Ghoulish Gala, a costume contest (details and date to
be announced soon). All proceeds from the festival will go to
support the Smithtown Township
Arts Council and its wide range of
music and art programs, creative
enrichment for both children and
adults.
For more information, call the
Smithtown Township Arts Council

‘Fuel’ Your College Student
With a ‘Care Package’ From Home
submitted by the
St. James Post Office
Snacks, encouragement, and
cash – the three sources of “fuel”
for a successful college education!
If you are thinking about energizing your favorite college student with a “care package from
home,” make sure to follow these
coaching tips:
Pack your ‘care package’
with care
Nothing short of a handful of
cash says “I love you” better than
baked cookies, cakes, and other
snacks sent from home. After all,
who knows when your college
student last ate, and what it was.
To keep your culinary contributions in good shape, select a container that is strong enough to
protect your contents during handling. Cushion the contents to
make sure they don’t move
around. Place the delivery
address inside the box, just in
case. Clearly label the outside of
the package, writing neatly, and
put the label on one side of the
box only. Use strong filament or
reinforced tape for closing and
securing the box flaps and seams.
Do not use wrapping paper or
string.
Double check the mailing
address with your scholar (or better yet, check with the school by
phone or online). Make sure to
use the dorm name, suite number, box number and/or other specific coding and delivery information. Some universities have tens
of thousands of students. Make
sure your gift gets where it should
go.
For more tips on successful
packaging, or to get packaging
materials,
including
tape,
envelopes, padded bags, boxes,
mailing tubes and cushioning
material, go to the St. James Post
Office.
‘Cash is king,’
but money orders are safe
Do not send cash through the
mail. Postal Money Orders are the
safe way to send money. Domestic and international money
orders are available at any Post
Office or from any rural route carrier in amounts up to $1,000, and
can be cashed at banks or at nearly 37,000 Postal Service retail
units nationwide. There is no
expiration date, and if they are
lost or stolen, simply present your
receipt to apply for a replacement.
If the financial need is pressing,
Priority Mail service will deliver
in 2-to-3 days on average at a
price that won’t break the bank.
And for emergencies, Express
Mail offers guaranteed next-day
delivery by 12 noon or 3 p.m. to
most destinations. The St. James
Post Office has Priority Mail and
Express Mail envelopes, packages
and other materials at no charge.
‘Confirmation’ removes
all doubt
“I never got it! PLEASE SEND
MORE!” Can’t blame the kid for
trying, right? If you want to make
sure your shipment gets delivered
to your favorite student, you have
several mailing options. You can
use Certified Mail and get a mailing receipt that also offers delivery
information over the Internet. For
a small additional fee, you can
purchase a return receipt to provide you with the recipient’s signature.
You can get Delivery Confirmation service for parcels sent by
Priority Mail, First-Class Mail and
Package Services. With Delivery
Confirmation, you can verify the
date, time and ZIP Code of your
delivery, or when delivery was
attempted, and whether your
package was forwarded or
returned.
With
Signature
Confirmation service, you will
know exactly who signed for it,
along with the date and time of
delivery. You can have a copy of
the signed delivery record faxed,
e-mailed, or mailed to you. And
for even greater convenience and
OUR TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2008
lower costs, you can choose an
electronic option that puts
enhanced delivery information at
your fingertips.
Help your student say
‘thank you’
Who knows? Your college student may actually want to thank
you for your “taste of home,” so
make staying in touch easy for
your young scholar. Include a
book of stamps or self-addressed
postage-paid postcards. Then he
or she has no excuse for not writing home!
And to make sure they remember where home is, use a complete return address on your
cards, letters and packages.
Include your address suffix (RD,
ST, AVE), directional code (N, E,
S, W) where appropriate, and ZIP
Code.
For ZIP Code information and
additional mailing tips, just go to
www.usps.com or come see us at
the St. James Post Office.

DESIGN IDEAS:
You’re Only As Good As Your Sources
by Natalie
Weinstein,
Allied ASID
In the world
of
interior
design, creativity and vision are very important.
But who will make the dream
come true, the impossible – possible? The team, and I mean a
team of people, fulfill the needs
of any given space. Did you ever
think of how many trades are
involved in re-doing your kitchen
or bathroom? Make a list and try
to recall the time when you had
to co-ordinate such a project.
“The Money Pit” or “The
Contractor from Hell” might
describe your experience, or perhaps you would equate it with all
the fun of a tooth extraction.
There is a saying in my trade –
“You’re only as good as your
sources.” Some of mine have
been part of my life for over 35
years and have earned my loyalty
because they actually call back,
keep appointments with my
clients and club members, know
their product and service, perform their jobs beautifully with a
minimum of fanfare and stress,
respond if something is not completely satisfactory and work with
each other well. In our imperfect
world, this is truly a blessing!
In our design firm (and I am
truly blessed to have as wonderful a staff as are my sources) each
day is devoted to planning,
implementing and completing
design projects. Day in and day
out for over 35 years, I have used
my sources to turn dreams into
reality and they have helped me
to grow my business and my reputation. Each day the challenges
and problems of doing business
are diminished because I know
the people I involve in our design
projects are there for clients, club
members and me.
Here are some tips for you to
find good sources for yourself:
1. Spend time interviewing.
2. Ask for references and actually
call them!
3. See some of their work in person.
4. Trust your “gut” feelings about
their responsiveness to your
project.
5. Ask for a written proposal
(Remember – if it’s not in the
contract, don’t assume it will
be included).
6. Ask for a time frame commitment.
7. See if your dog or child likes
them (only kidding!), but you
should at least feel a connection.
What about you – How can
you be the ideal consumer? Be
clear as to what you want.
1. Listen to the source and ask
questions if you need clarification on their estimate or proposal.
2. Know the scope of work and
compare apples to apples.
3. Treat potential sources with
respect, thank them for their
time and give them the courtesy of a return phone call after
a proposal is made, whether
you hire them or not.

Warding Off Water Woes
by Jim Winter
Water damage can occur
almost anywhere in your house.
Water-using appliances and fixtures, such as refrigerators with
icemakers, dishwashers, washing
machines, toilets and water
heaters are common locations of
leaks.
Unfortunately, slow leaks at
these appliances and fixtures are
often times impossible to see until
it is too late. If it goes undetected,
a slow leak can lead to rotting
house framing and subfloors, and
can be a precursor to a cata-
OUR TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2008
strophic leak that can release several gallons of water per minute,
causing extensive water damage.
A water leak detection system
may help prevent these problems.
There are two types of water
leak detection systems: passive
and active.
Passive leak detection systems
are intended to alert you of a
leak. They generally sound an
audible alarm tone and some
may also feature a flashing light.
Passive systems are frequently
battery-operated,
stand-alone
units. They are inexpensive and
easy to install. Some simply sit on
the floor while others may be
wall mounted. A moisture sensor
is located on the floor and activates the alarm when it becomes
wet. Passive leak detection systems are especially useful in locations where it is easy for someone
to hear the alarm such as near
refrigerators, dishwashers, or toilets.
Active leak detection systems
usually generate some type of
alarm, but also perform a function that will stop the water flow.
They feature a shut-off valve and
some means to determine that a
leak is occurring. Most devices
use moisture sensors to detect a
leak. Other systems use a flow
sensor and a timer to determine
that something is leaking and the
water needs to be turned off.
An individual appliance system, which costs $50 to $150,
detects a leak from a specific
appliance, such as a washing
machine or water heater and
shuts off the water supply to that
appliance only. You can often
install these systems without the
use of special tools.
A whole house system, which
costs $500 to $1,500, sends an
alarm when a leak is detected
and automatically shuts off the
main water service. Some models
can also be integrated with a
local or central station security
system.

NATURALLY SPEAKING:
Enjoy the Coming Autumn
by June A. Liardi
“Autumn is a second spring
when every leaf is a flower.”
– ALBERT CAMUS
Go for a family hike in the
woods. See how many different
color and shape leaves each person can find (careful of poison ivy
leaves). Back at home the children can get busy and make some
decorations with all the leaves.
Get a large piece of paper and
have the children glue the leaves
onto the paper to create leaf people and leaf animals. Add heads
and legs, etc., with crayons or
markers, to create a whole picture. The older children could
glue the leaves onto different colored construction paper to create
placemats for the whole family.
You can also dry and flatten the
leaves and use them as a base for
your desert or hor d’oeuvre platter. Or just scatter them on your
table tops for a nice casual
autumn look.
Time to harvest and preserve
the last of your fresh herbs, before
the frost gets them. The day
before, gently spray them with
the garden hose to remove dirt
and any bugs. Pick them the next
day around mid-morning as the
night’s moisture is gone and the
plant’s essential oil has not yet
been released by the warming of
the sun. If it is a perennial herb,
do not cut more than one third of
the plant. For drying the herbs,
bundle the stems into small,
loose bunches and hang them
upside down. Do not crowd
them. You want air to circulate all
around them, otherwise they may
get moldy and rotten. Make sure
you bundle only like herbs
together so that their scents don’t
mingle. Hang them in a cool, dry
place, away from direct sunlight.
I like to hang some of them where
I can see and smell them. When
they are completely dry, store
them in an airtight, marked container. Store without crushing
them. Only crush them as you
use them, this helps to preserve
their potency.

MONEY MATTERS:
Is Your Money Working as Hard as You Do?
by Scott Posner, CFP, A.A.M.S.
Labor Day just passed, which,
ironically enough, means that
many people took the day off
from work. But if you’re like most
people, you spend most of your
days working hard. And if you’re
going to achieve your long-term
goals, such as a comfortable
retirement, you’ll want your
money to work hard for you, too.
What can you do to keep your
money gainfully employed?
Here are a few ideas:
• Invest for growth. Many people make the mistake of
investing too conservatively.
Of course, the stock market
will always fluctuate, and
some price drops can seem
frightening. Yet if you try to
“play it safe” by investing
not provide a return that keeps
up with inflation. To really
have your money work for
you, you should include at
least some growth-oriented
investments, such as stocks, in
your portfolio. You can’t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but you may be able to
reduce it by purchasing quality
stocks and holding them for
the long term.
• Don’t take “vacations” from
investing. If you want your
money to continually work
hard, don’t give it a vacation.
Yet that’s just what many people do, especially following an
event that is commonly perceived as detrimental to the
financial markets, such as a

could be taking another type
of risk: the risk of losing purchasing power. That’s because

war, a corporate or political
scandal or a spike in oil prices.
But in the past, the markets have
always rallied, even after the
most disturbing news. And while
it’s true that past performance is
not a guarantee of future results,
it’s also true that investors who
stop investing for a while, as
they wait for “things to get better,” generally earn poorer
returns than those who have
stayed invested, through good
times and bad.
• Take the emotion out of
investment decisions. It’s been
said that fear and greed drive
the markets. In other words,
investors sell stocks when their
prices are down because they
are afraid of further drops, and
they buy more stocks when
the prices are high in the hope
of earning even more profits.
In other words, their emotions
cause them to do the opposite
of the most famous piece of
investment advice: Buy low
and sell high. Don’t make
these mistakes. Your money
will work harder for you if you
invest it in a careful manner,
based on your individual
needs, goals and risk tolerance.
• Review your portfolio regularly. To make sure your money
is, in fact, working hard, you’ll
need to check on it from time
to time. That’s why it’s a good
idea to have regular portfolio
reviews, preferably with an
experienced financial advisor.
Over time, your needs may
change, or your investments
themselves may evolve in a
way you hadn’t anticipated. If
these things happen, you may
need to make some changes to
your portfolio so that you can
take advantage of new opportunities.
By following these suggestions,
you can help your money work
for you in the years and decades
ahead. And, as is often the case
in life, hard work can bring good
results.

MORTGAGE MATTERS
The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008
by Ann Mondrone
Earlier this year I wrote
about the Economic Stimulus
Act of 2008. Among other
things it provided for an
increase in mortgage
loan limits for both
conventional and FHA
loans. The increase
was temporary and
scheduled to expire at
the end of the year.
Recently the federal
government has acted
again in a move that is
designed to aid the current
housing market. The Housing
& Economic Recovery Act of
2008 was recently signed.
The new bill contained many
provisions, but three of the most
significant to consumers are:
New permanent loan limits
The limits for both Conventional and FHA insured loans will
be permanently increased to
$625,500. There is also an
expansion of the FHA Reverse
Mortgage Loan program to the
same loan limit (these mortgages
were previously excluded).
“Hope for Homeowners”
This new program offers FHA
insurance to lenders who “writedown” mortgage balances for
borrowers who are unable to
afford their current mortgage payments. There are too many details
eral income tax liability –
could be applied to monies
owed, become a refund, or be
a combination of both.
• For an individual, the
maximum credit is only
available to a gross
income of $75,000 or
$150,000 if married and
filing jointly. The credit
phases out between
$75,000 ($150,000 if
married and filing jointly)
and $95,000 ($170,000
if married and filing
jointly).
of this provision to include in this
column. If you are a homeowner
who has fallen behind due to
inability to make your mortgage
payment, you should contact
your lender directly to get details.
Tax incentives for first-time
home buyers
First-time home buyers can
receive a tax credit of 10% of the
purchase price of the home not to
exceed $7,500. A first-time home
buyer is defined as not owning a
home within three years. Some
guidelines for this credit are:
• home cannot be purchased
from a related person
• the credit would apply to fed-
OUR TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2008
• A “recapture” of the credit
occurs over 15 years (accelerated recapture if the home is
sold or ceases to be a primary
residence).
With help for existing homeowners and incentives for those
looking to become homeowners,
the federal government continues
to try to stimulate and bolster the
housing market. If you feel you
can benefit from these new provisions, contact your mortgage professional.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE:
Should You Insure Your Children?
submitted by Lawrence Glazer,
CLU, ChFC, LUTCF
The question of insuring children is a loaded one. The death
of a child is an unimaginable
tragedy, one of parents’ worst
nightmares and something no one
would want to even contemplate.
Understandably, many people
find the idea of insuring their children to be somewhat distasteful –
or downright offensive. But purchasing a permanent life insurance policy for your child today
could give them a financial head
start tomorrow.
A Financial Advantage
There are two very good reasons to consider insuring your
child, for their own benefit. The
first is financial: the earlier you
purchase life insurance, the less it
costs. No matter what kind of
policy you purchase, life insurance costs more the older you
are. However, with a permanent
life insurance policy, you can
lock in a premium price when
you first purchase the policy. If
you purchase a policy for your
child at a young age, that affordable premium is locked in and
will not go up throughout the
course of your child’s life, as long
as the policy is kept in force. That
can be an enormous financial
advantage to your child as they
go through life.
In addition, the earlier you
purchase permanent life insurance, the longer the cash value
has to grow tax-deferred. Over
the years, that can make a huge
difference in the amount of cash
value that can accumulate. And
down the road, that cash value
can be borrowed against1 if necessary – for instance, to buy a
house, pay for college tuition or
help supplement retirement
income. That’s why having a
cash value accumulating for a
long time can be a financial
advantage to your child, in the
future.
The Gift of Insurability
However, the most compelling
reason to purchase life insurance
for your child while he or she is
young is the fact that doing so
can ensure their insurability later
in life. We all pray that our children lead healthy lives. But, realistically, so much can happen to
make them uninsurable or only
insurable at a high cost – even
their chosen profession. A juvenile life insurance policy can help
protect them when they are
young, and allow for greater protection as they grow older. Many
policies come with riders that
allow your child to purchase
additional insurance at various
points in their life. By insuring
your child while they are young,

you can help make sure they can
provide financial protection for
their own family later on in their
life.
Should Tragedy Strike
Even in the event of an
unthinkable tragedy, the proceeds of a child’s life insurance
policy could make a difference in
so many ways. That money could
be used to keep your child’s
memory alive – for instance, you
can give to a charity or create a
memorial fund in your child’s
name.
The death benefit can also help
you deal with some of real financial ramifications of such a
tragedy, such as medical or funeral costs. It would be devastating
enough to lose a child, without
having to also struggle to cover
medical bills and final expenses,
which can run in the thousands
of dollars. The policy death benefit could also allow you to grieve
properly. Many companies will
give parents a week off with pay
when a child dies, but how many
people would be ready to go
back to work one week after losing their child? The death benefit
could allow you to take the time
you need to grieve without having to worry about your income
during that time.

Incorporating Your Business is Good Business
by John Belford, Esq.
Benefits of Incorporation
Operating a business in corporate form rather than as a sole
proprietorship or a partnership
has many benefits – and it’s simple and inexpensive. The benefits
include the following:”
1. The difference between the
Self-Employment Tax payable by
sole proprietors and partnerships
versus a corporation’s obligation
to pay social security deposits for
its shareholders engaged in the
same business is, as a general
rule, a savings for each shareholder of approximately 3% of his
or her net earnings.
2. The shareholder or employee of a corporation will not be
liable for lawsuits for corporate
debts or accidents causing injury
to another unless the individual
shareholder or employee agreed
to guarantee the financial obligation or is personally involved in
the accident. This benefit is especially attractive to fields subject
to claims for negligently caused
injuries such as medical, dental
and legal practices.
3. Shareholders of a corporation can come and go and the
corporation’s books, records,
contracts and relationships with
customers and vendors usually go
forward with little or no bumps.
4. Shareholders can, and usually do, elect to avoid all corporate income taxes by taking profits as salary every year or by
electing “Sub-Chapter S” status
such that corporate taxes are not
imposed upon the corporation
and the corporation’s profits are

allocated among the shareholders
in accordance with their shareholdings and taxed on their individual personal tax returns.
Cost
Establishing a corporation can
be completed within three or four
weeks in the usual case. The
costs incurred in order to establish the corporation are approximately $1,500, including attorneys fees, filing fees to the
Secretary of State and preparation
of initial corporate documents.

HEALTH VIEWS:
By Gregory R. Thomaier, D.C., C.C.S.P.
This article is part of an ongoing series presented in order to bring you the
very best and latest information about exercise, health and diet.
Is Your Diet Providing
Enough Nutrients?
The startling truth is that
most Americans to do not
receive enough daily nutrients.
Research from top medical
experts and health organization
supports the idea that not all
necessary nutrients can come
from diet alone. Recently, it has
been reported that over 82% of
Americans do not consume an
adequate amount of fruits and
vegetables daily, leaving a diet
lacking crucial vitamins and
minerals.
Many factors, such as busy
lifestyles, environmental problems and poor soil food growth,
directly effect our ability to
maintain proper nutrition. Diet
alone cannot sustain optimal
amounts of vitamins and minerals. Low levels of vitamins and
minerals are associated with a
variety of health problems
including various cancers, birth
defects, cardiovascular disease
and several chronic diseases.
Taking a multivitamin every day
is a healthy, effective way to
insure you receive the proper
amount of nutrients for a balanced dietary plan and healthy
lifestyle.
A multivitamin acts as a stable foundation for a nutrient rich
diet and optimal health. A vitamin-mineral formula designed
for maximum support should
include vitamins A, C and E, as
well as essential antioxidants
and selenium. To help build
bone density, a formula consisting of calcium, magnesium and
vitamin D work synergistically
to increase absorption and
strength. Minerals such as
chromium and zinc help metabolism and hormone function. B
vitamins including vitamin B6,
vitamin B12, folic acid and
niacin promote neurological
health, cardiovascular health
and energy levels. Choosing to
take a daily vitamin, despite
wide varieties in ingredients
and formulations, proves to be
beneficial and should be a priority with maintaining a healthy
diet. If you find yourself following a diet plan lacking vitamins
and minerals, talk to your doctor about starting a multivitamin
formula to help kick start a
nutrient rich, healthy lifestyle.

Diet: A Most Vulgar Four Letter Word!
by Nicole Lawrence
Many of our most cherished
memories are associated with
beloved people and food.
Holiday gatherings, family picnics, romantic candlelight dinners, a night out with friends –
we eat, we laugh, we love.
Unfortunately, many times the
beautiful marriage of good company and good food is interrupted
when we decide that, in order to
lose a few pounds, we must diet.
A dreaded word and an even
more dreaded action, dieting
often drapes a dark cloud over
our dinner plate (and breakfast
bowl and brown-bag lunch).
But imagine actually losing
weight while eating satisfying,
hearty, delicious foods. It IS possible, and it can transform your
body inside and out!
The key is combining whole,
natural, nutrient-dense foods with
portion control.
What exactly are whole foods?
Whole foods are simply foods that
are mostly, if not completely,
unprocessed and unrefined.
Whole grains include brown rice,
quinoa, whole wheat, buckwheat, and oats. Beans and
legumes, such as chickpeas,
lentils, and kidney beans are natural whole foods. Raw nuts and
seeds are also highly nutritious
and tasty whole foods.
Why eat whole foods?
Well, as human beings, we are
designed to survive on what the
earth provides. When our hunterand-gatherer ancestors searched
for food, they certainly didn’t
come across Twinkies® or Hot
Pockets®! They consumed fresh
fish, meat, fowl, and the leaves,
OUR TOWN • SEPTEMBER 2008
roots, and fruits of many plants,
all of which are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Therefore, our
bodies are adept at digesting
whole foods and absorbing their
nutrients. Also, most whole foods
also possess antiviral, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant properties.
What's the key to
portion control?
Daily food intake and proper
portions will differ based on age,
gender, level of activity, and personal health goals. Consulting
with a nutrition professional is the
best way to determine the precise
portions you need to achieve
your goals. However, a free and
valuable nutrition resource is the
USDA’s recently revised Food
Pyramid website, www.mypyramid.gov. This site offers interaccontinued on page 99

Sacroiliac Joint Pain
by Dr. Linda M. Bocchichio
length, just enough to be causing
stress or strain to your S1 joints.
What are some of the facts
about sacroiliac joint pain?
The sacroiliac or “S1” joints
are the link between your spinal
column and pelvis. They help
absorb damaging shock forces,
and they also help stabilize the
body and transmit weight to the
lower limbs. S1 joints normally
have some amount of movement,
and they can move in several
planes of motion.
Two separate and distinct categories of S1 Subluxation exist.
Primary occurs suddenly, due to
trauma, lifting, slipping, or sudden unexpected movements.
Secondary is caused by faulty
posture aggravated by occupation
or habits.
If a traumatic injury is ruled
out in your case, and the pain
seems to lessen when you’re
lying down and not moving, a
postural imbalance might be contributing to your condition. There
may be an imbalance in your feet
or your legs may be unequal in
How can a chiropractor help
me?
Usually, your chiropractor will
ask you several questions about
the location and intensity of your
pain, whether the pain seems to
spread to other parts of the body
(thigh, buttock, groin, leg, foot,
etc.) if it causes you to limp, if it
hurts to turn over in bed or get up
from a chair, etc.
Postural evaluation, joint
examination, and diagnostic testing are common techniques your
chiropractor may use to help
determine whether you are experiencing a true dysfunction of the
S1 joint. Your doctor will adjust
the affected joint for proper alignment.

What can I do at home to get
better faster?
Your chiropractor may suggest
that you do a rehabilitative exercise program in the privacy of
your own home. This helps build
muscle strength and joint stability.
Your doctor may also recommend support for the low back/
pelvis area while you are sleeping. A cervical support pillow can
help promote comfort and proper
alignment of the spine during
sleep.
See your chiropractor before
injuries from biomechanical dysfunction occurs.

Most people avoid them,
Which isn’t quite fair,
But maybe they think....
They’ll never be there.
He’s in charge of the wake,
Although, the star is asleep,
And he’ll usually smile,
Although, others may weep.
Except for a visit,
Or to see an old friend,
‘Cause they’re living a life
That surely won’t end.
He contacts the clergy,
And locates the plot,
Arranges all the flowers,
Takes care of “what not.”
At least so they think,
Or that’s what they say,
If anyone should ask,
“How are you today?”
Now comes the big day
This is the last scene,
Make sure you get in
The right limousine
But the funeral director
Spends his life with death.
A man of great detail,
To the very last breath.
We’re having a motorcade,
Through the middle of town,
And leading the way... is,
‘The last guy to let you down.’
– David F. McKell
Talk to the Lord
At the end of each day
I kneel down to pray
And have a solemn talk
with my Lord
I start by confessing
Thank Him for His blessing
And let Him know
How much He’s adored
As we talk I feel the warmth
Of His spirit near my heart
There is so much to say
I don’t know where to start
When my talk is ended
I feel at ease and at peace
I’m sure if you speak
with your Lord
Your faith also will increase

A Gift for a Lifetime
Purchasing life insurance for
your children should not come
instead of purchasing life insurance for yourself and your
spouse, or saving for your retirement. However, if you have the
funds, purchasing an insurance
policy for your children could
help ensure they are protected,
and also help them and their
future families down the line.
Rather than being something
offensive to even think about,
buying life insurance for your
children could end up being one
of the greatest gifts you’ll ever
give them.
For more information about life
insurance, please contact your
insurance professional

Loans against your policy accrue interest

value by the amount of the outstanding
loan and interest.

– IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE –
St. James Day Traffic Information
Sunday, September 28, 2008
Once again the St. James Chamber of Commerce will
be holding their annual ST. JAMES DAY on Sunday,
September 28, 2008. PLEASE BE ADVISED that due
to the growing concerns for the safety of the residents
and visitors on St. James Day, a number of meetings
were held to discuss the traffic flow and parking on
the streets that directly affect the area on and around
Lake Avenue between Woodlawn and Railroad
Avenues. Several St. James Chamber of Commerce
board members met with representatives of the St.
James Fire Department, Smithtown Department of
Public Safety Director, John Valentine and Smithtown
Town Board Member, Councilman Edward Wehrheim.
The main concern was access to Lake Avenue for
emergency vehicles and traffic flow around the St.
James Day event. To accommodate this end the following plan was agreed upon.
Washington Avenue will be ONE WAY going SOUTH
from Railroad Avenue to Woodlawn Avenue. Parking
will be allowed on the west side of Washington
ONLY (NO PARKING signs will be posted on the east
side of the street to facilitate access for emergency
vehicles and traffic flow during the event).
First Avenue will be ONE WAY from Woodlawn
Avenue going NORTH to Railroad Avenue. Parking
will be allowed on the west side of First Avenue
ONLY (NO PARKING signs will be posted on the east
side of the street to facilitate access for emergency
vehicles and traffic flow during the event).
All of the side streets that join Washington Avenue
and First Avenue to Lake Avenue will have ONE SIDE
parking ONLY. These parking spaces will be used
SOLELY for the vendors so they can have access to
their products. (Special parking permits will be
issued.)
We feel that by taking these precautions for the safety of the residents and visitors, St. James Day will be
more enjoyable and orderly.
We would like to thank the residents in advance for
their cooperation in this matter, and ask that all heed
to these special requirements for the day. We all look
forward to another great St. James Day.
