A nice late yellow we received as a seedling
from Chris Trautmann back in the mid 90's. He
tells us the cross was made by the late Dr. Tom
Ring and Chris grew some of the seed. Hardy
yellows are scarce and late-blooming ones
even more so. This has beautiful dark green
foliage in bright light and not too much direct
sun or the leaves may yellow. Zones 6-8. H:
5-6 ft. W: 6-8 ft.

Dr. August Kehr. Large leaves on a robust
grower. The flowers are pink to white and sit
on the rosette of large leaves in a most regal

(sport of catawbiense 'Boursault'). Thomasson.
A variegated leaf form of 'Boursault' with irregular creamy streaks and splashes throughout
the leaves. The flower is the same purply-pink

(fortunei ssp. decorum hybrid). Gable. Named
for one of Gable's daughters, the loose trusses
of large flowers are light orchid pink and
moderately fragrant with narrow light green
leaves. A large growing plant and one of the
best performers for the East Coast. Popular for
hybridizing, as recent research has shown it to
be resistant to fungal root diseases. Zones 5-7.

Rhododendron 'Carte Blanche'
('Sammetglut' X yakushimanum 'Koichiro
Wada'). Hachmann. Rosy-red flowers with
darker edges holds their color well and are
displayed beautifully on a low-growing mound
with recurved dark green leaves. Buds young
and is perhaps the best overall grower of the
Hachmann introductions. Named in honor of
Herr Hachmann's home town in Germany.
Looks great even when not in bloom! Zones

(R. brachycarpum X 'Bonfire'). Shapiro. White
funnel-shaped and ruffled-edged flowers are
set off by brilliant yellow spots on the dorsal
lobe. Domed trusses of 18-20 flowers open
from pink buds, which age quickly to white. Retains color longer on outside and on margins.
Compact and vase-shaped with exceptional
dark green glossy foliage. A good performer.

A mid-May bloomer that will not be easily upstaged. Ruffled and fragrant, multi-colored pink
4" flowers have heavy substance. The upright
trusses are displayed on a medium growing
sun-tolerant plant with the characteristic large
matte-green fortunei-type leaves. A "top-of-theline" Dexter. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

Thornton. The species R. hyperythrum shows
great heat tolerance. Our plant of the hybrid
'Charles Loomis' endures our hot summers and
never shows any ill effects. Buds heavily, with
rounded trusses emerging first as blush pink
quickly turning white, much like a yak hybrid.
The narrow and glossy recurved leaves are
retained for 3-4 years. Zones 5-8. H: 3-4 ft. W:

One of the last to bloom in what we call the
midseason (May 25 for us), 'Cadis' puts on
a floriferous show with its fragrant ruffled
light-pink trusses with yellow deep in its throat.

x 'Rubicon')='Whid Bee']. Fujioka. Stunning
new hybrid with red-purple leaf bottoms. Upper

and mound shaped. This plant may have a better chance of tolerating eastern gardens than

stopper! 'Calsap' combines the hardiness of
'Catalgla' with 'Sappho' to produce a super
hardy, upright grower. White flowers with a bold
purple flare on the upper lobe in a formal truss.
Sets a prodigious amount of seed and should
be dead-headed after flowering to maintain

sensation in bloom! The picotee-type flower is
red edged with white on a fast growing plant
with good habit and shiny foliage. Best in
dappled shade. Tony Consolini was Charles

Rhododendron 'Edith Bosley'
('Essex Scarlet' x fortunei). Shapiro hybrid. The
Shapiros considered this their best plant and
many agree. A medium-sized plant, wider than
tall that buds up heavily even in full shade, but
also does well in sun. The full pink trusses in
late May have a distinctive rust-colored flare in
the throat of each flower. The name says it all
because it is a center of attraction! Zones 5-8.

(Dexter/Bosley 1035 x Lee’s Dark Purple).
Bosley Nursery. The closest thing to the royal
purple color of 'Purple Splendor' in a zone 5
hardy plant? Perhaps. In late May flower buds
of rich dark purple open to medium purple with
a dark flare on the upper lobe. The plant habit
is bushy and compact with nice dark green
foliage. Not recommended for areas with very

tough decorum. It is a well-clothed but open
grower that eventually becomes a large plant.
The leaves are a dark shade of green and the
flowers are large white in an ever-so-slightly

(parentage unknown). Dexter. The name is
an apt one; the fragrant flowers are buff with
faint highlights of pink, apricot, and yellow. The
foliage is moderately glossy and olive green in

Rhododendron 'Dexter's Honeydew'
(parentage unknown). Dexter. Few rhododendrons can rival 'Dexter's Honeydew' for
fragrance, filling the air when in full bloom. The
medium-sized plant forms a mound wider than
high with a tendency to sprawl, but pinching
when young will help shape it. Large 4", flatfaced flowers are soft pink and white, set off by
large olive-green leaves. Choice! Zones 6-7. H:

(Dexter's Giant Red X yak, Whitney dwarf
form). cross by Charlie Patterson, registered
by George Hibben. Humorously described as a
cross between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua,
it's an exceptionally worthy addition to our
"kennel" of offerings. Deep pink buds open
to large light pink flowers turning pure white
with a contrasting red spot deep in the throat.
Matte-finished leaves are thick and leathery
with a thin layer of indumentum. Zones 5-7. H:

Opening from deep pink buds to blush-colored
flowers, this is a tough, durable and beautiful
yak hybrid from Heinje Nursery in Germany.
Leaves are thick in texture, providing an attractive foil for the flowers which appear later than
most yaks. Reportedly very cold hardy-try it
and let us know! Zones 5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

The new growth is fantastic. Long, narrow, upright fingery shoots are covered with red bracts
and hairs. Mature leaves are relatively narrow,

of deep, pure red in ball trusses will knock you

('Britannia' X 'Dexter 202'). Hybrid by A. Consolini & A. Savella in 1971.. A tall growing plant
with buds that are almost black-red as they
open. The flowers are a deep carmine red in a
large spectacular truss. A great very cold-hardy
red for late midseason display. This was the
answer to the blue-red color of 'Nova Zembla'
which had been the hardy red choice for northern climates. Zones 5-7. H: 5-0 ft. W: 5-0 ft.

hybrid. The trusses, made up of 4 inch pure
white highly fragrant flowers, are often partially
double. They look stately and handsome on
this medium to large-sized plant. The flowers

Delp. NEW! Flowers are pristine white opening
late (early June here) after most others have
finished. Leaves are very dark green. Parentage is 75% native maximum with 25% yak.
What this gives you is a plant that looks much
like maximum in flower and leaf, with a much
more refined and compact habit from the yak

pollinated). Uosukainen. Tough as nails,
this Finnish beauty is medium in height and
extremely cold-hardy. Light pink flowers sit in

varieties in our nursery for its clean "brachycarpum-type" foliage and rounded plant habit.

X strigillosum). Seabrook. One of the earliest
eleps to bloom, "Grace" has many fans! MidApril brings a "wake-you-up-in-the-spring" red,
in full trusses of large flowers further enhanced
by large dark green leaves. Give it a protected
location in Zone 6 or warmer. Similar to
'Taurus', but her flower buds are green and she
blooms about a week earlier. Zones 6-8. H: 5-6

vigorous plant with large soft lilac pink trusses

Frilly white flowers emerge from pinky-lavender buds in small but very full and abundant
trusses. An exceptional rock-hardy yak hybrid
with great foliage. The low, compact plant
buds heavily from a young age and has been
identified in scientific studies as being highly
resistant to phytopthera (root rot disease).

Hachmann. NEW! White as snow with a

Beautiful glossy dark green foliage. Winter hardiness to about -10°F. Both parents grow well
here so this should too. Zones 6-7. H: 30-36 in.

Of unknown origin, this has unusual pastel
peach-colored trusses. It has proven to be an
excellent and satisfying plant with no winter
damage here in central NJ, in over 20 years.
Somewhat lax growth habit, but the color
is lovely, with healthy medium matte-green
foliage and a hint of tan indumentum. Quite
distinctive! Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

doer"! Large ruffled lavender-pink flowers
topped off by a yellow blotch appear the third
week of May. Parent of many lovely offspring,

The offspring of 'Wild Affair' x 'Kristin Marie'need we say more? She's a late bloomer and a
beautiful bicolor, with pinky-red edging a white

with medium green, long pointed leaves. Hank
Schannen made the cross and Jerry van de
Sande came up with an inspired name for a

('Hyperion' X 'Diadem'). Hachmann. One of our
favorites! Spectacular light lavender flowers
with a touch of lilac spotting and darker purple
blotch, edged with ruffles. Deep green and
very glossy foliage on a compact plant. A topnotch plant from the world-famous Hachmann
Nursery in Germany and a standard in its color
group. Zones 5-7. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

('Degram' X 'Atrier'). Gable. Flowers are clear
rose-pink with a red eye rather late in the
season, usually the first week of June here
in central NJ. This is a rare Joe Gable hybrid

Rhododendron 'Kalinka'
('Morgenrot' X ['Mars' x yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada']). Hachmann. A low-growing beautiful
shrub with dark green, lightly indumented
leaves that show off its yak background. This
is a compact shrub that needs no pruning.
The flowers are a strong rose pink that fade to
lighter pink but hold their color better than other
yakushimanum hybrids. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft.

(unknown cross). Kerns. The flower is a large
light lavender with a strong deep purple blotch.
As it tends to be an open grower when young,
pinch the new growth, and you will be rewarded by a bushier, vase-shaped plant. Zones 6-7.

('Lady Eleanor Cathcart' x decorum). Dexter. A
very large growing and distinctive plant grown
by John Wister at Swarthmore, PA and later at
Tyler Arboretum from seedlings he was given
by Dexter in 1945. The very large leaves show
R. maximum influence as do the late June pink
flowers. Leaves also have a distinctive bend
or arch shape sometimes seen in R. arboreum
hybrids. Zones 5-7. H: 6-8 ft. W: 6-8 ft.

We're still trying to find more about this plant's
history- but it's from the Shapiros and is a good
grower that stands out after the main bloom
season is past. Pink and prettily ruffled flowers
in a nicely rounded truss are set off by dark
green leaves. The plant gets quite large and

very odd rhododendron in that in blooms reliably in September! Nice medium sized trusses
are white with a small yellow flare on the upper
lobes. Leaves are attractive dark green on a
very low growing, dense, semi-dwarf plant.
Don't expect much bloom in the spring, it's a

This would still be a garden gem just for
its leaves, which are long and narrow and
arranged around the stems like the ribs of an
umbrella. New growth is covered with white
tomentum and the plant habit is dense and
rounded. Flowers are pink turning white and
held in a compact truss. This species does well

('Nassau Red' X 'Dexter's Honeydew'). Hinerman. Truly an unsung hero(ine), Midwest
bred 'Marjie Kay' has attractive medium pink
ball trusses in mid-late May, on a dark green,
glossy leaved plant. But it's the plant habit that
is the real story. A naturally compact variety
that's low and spreading. An outstanding plant
that is NOT a prima donna- she plays well with
others! Zones 5-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 5-6 ft.

degronianum subsp. heptamerum
'Jerry's Glossy Leaf'
Native to northern Japan. This species has
pale through deep pink flowers, sometimes
lined with deeper pink inside. The evergreen
leaves have a lush reddish brown indumentum.
It makes a dense, mounded plant, spectacular
year round! Zones 5-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

Rhododendron metternichii (aka degronianum subsp. heptamerum)
(degronianum var. heptamerum). van de
Sande. Despite the confusing name, this is a
good looking plant. This species is native to
northern Japan, has pale to deep pink flowers,
sometimes lined with deeper pink inside. The
evergreen leaves have a lush reddish-brown
indumentum. It makes a dense mounded plant,
spectacular year 'round! Try one and see what
you've been missing! Zones 5-7. H: 3-5 ft. W:

1997. From a cross of two classic, scented
Dexters, how can this not be good? Large,
super fragrant, 7-lobed flowers in multitudes
of big creamy trusses opening from light pink
buds cover this compact growing plant. A spot
of yellow-green deep in the throat of each
flower provides attractive contrast. Zones 6-8.

David Leach. A vigorous grower tolerant of
adverse conditions, with a large truss. Blooms
earlier than other yaks but with typical yak
"appleblossom" flowers. Foliage is dark green
with thick tawny indumentum. Leach was
convinced this seed-grown selection was pure
R. yakushimanum. Hank (and others) thought
it screams yak x smirnowii. Zones 4-8. H: 3-4

a hint of lilac, held upright in a pleasing, full,
dome-shaped truss. The leaves are narrow
and deep matte green. The plant is upright
and grows large. It blooms late, often around
Memorial Day or later. Zones 5-7. H: 6-0 ft. W:

blooms with black spotting on the upper lobe
open late in rhody season on this vigorous
upright plant. A very old variety from the UK
whose parentage has been lost. Ron thinks he

and new growth, growth habit, and hardiness.

OP, selected by Wister. NEW! Incredibly
fragrant blooms cover this creamy flowered
beauty in early May. It was introduced by
renowned horticulturist John C. Wister, former
director of both the Scott and Tyler Arboreta,
selected in 1960 from hundreds of seedlings
originally given to him in 1947. Still ranks today
among the most fragrant varieties. Zones 6-8.

A rare species from a few high mountains in
Taiwan, certainly a contender for the most
attractive foliage of any rhododendron. New

but the deep rose flowers set off by a gold flare
are definitely NOT! The compact, full truss sits
on an "Elizabethan collar" of wide dark green
leaves. Very cold hardy and a robust grower

To inject some humor into Hank’s talks on rhododendrons,
he began providing a handout to reduce planting and care
problems. Then a funny thing happened. Since we began
using it, we noticed a decline in questions about how to
handle rhododendrons and azaleas. It turns out it helps

[maximum 'Mount Mitchell' X ('Mars' x 'Fanfare')]. Leach. This plant is a late bloomer, tall,
full truss of 16-19 flowers and the large, longish
leaves of maximum. The flowers are larger
than maximum, bright red with a white throat
and small yellow dorsal flare. Zones 5-7. H: 5-6
ft. W: 3-4 ft.

(yakushimanum x 'Doncaster'). Waterer, Sons
& Crisp hybrid. The idea of growing each plant
of the famous Seven Dwarfs series is appealing to the Disneyphile but not practical in the

is enhanced by dark red spotting to create
a flare. Low growing with midseason bloom.

'Scintillation' and of a similar color so obviously
we prefer it. Don't think of this as "just another

We believe this to be the best of the yak x 'Fabia' crosses for our climate. It's a plant of low,

with a silvery margin around the edges. The

hyperythrum hybrids have recently become
popular as they are tolerant of the heat and
humidity prevalent in much of the eastern US.
'Lisenne Rockefeller' was named for the wife
of the former Governor of Arkansas and is a
pretty white with red freckles. Zones 5-8. H: 3-4

of medium size, as wide as tall. It is one of
the hardiest purples. This grows in full sun in
windswept fields at Weston Nurseries in central

this has become one of our top 10 plants for

spring charmer is an antidote to winter blues!
Yellow flowers with a tinge of pink cover this
early blooming (late April to early May) lepidote
rhododendron. Small medium green leaves
cover a compact plant. A good spring wake up
call before the big-leaved rhododendrons begin

late Frank Furman who bred rhododendrons

large and long for a lepidote and attractive
apple-green providing a wonderful foil for the
gorgeous bright clean pink flowers in Mid April.

Rhododendron laetevirens (AKA 'Wilsonii' or Wilson Rhododendron)

While each individual saucer-shaped flower
is small, they are grouped in six or seven
individual trusses containing up to 20 flowers

old reliable yet distinctive and attractive small

trusses nestle in the foliage in early May.

bronzy winter foliage on a reliable performer.

Rhododendron 'Molly Fordham'
('Balta' x minus var. minus Carolinianum
Group). Mezitt/Weston Nursery. This has
become our white lepidote of choice. Think of it
as a PJM-type rhododendron, but covered with

"Royal" is an appropriate name, considered to
be among the finest deciduous azaleas. In late

than other rhodies. Needs shade to thrive.

Rhododendron viscosum var. montanum (Swamp Azalea)
This distinctive form of R.viscosum is undoubtedly the best for garden use. The growth
habit is low and compact, very different from
the normal tall lanky growth of the species.
Native to higher elevations in the Blue Ridge
Mountians of NC, it has the same late, fragrant
white flowers, usually around early to mid-July.

They are superior to all others we have seen. We discard
the aluminum wires that come with them and instead use
plastic coated bell wire from the hardware store. Use an
8-10" piece, attach one end to the label and make a large

Matlack/Beaudry. Repeat bloomers are the
newest trend in evergreen azaleas, but many
are not hardy. This is hardy here in Zone 6b,
with large white (sometimes sectored with
lavender) flowers on a spreading plant. The
name is apt as it doesn't bloom in the springunlike most azaleas, it blooms on new growth
in August and continues into the fall. Zones

Rhododendron 'Gaiety' (Glenn Dale
Azalea)
Morrison. A lesser-known but excellent Glenn
Dale hybrid azalea, 'Gaiety' has large 2-3" pink
flowers with a darker blotch in early midseason.
The plant habit is erect to broad spreading,
reaching 5' tall and wide. Voted one of the best
Glenn Dale cultivars, receiving 70 votes in a
poll of 100 growers. Zones 6-9. H: 4-5 ft. W:

Rhododendron 'Ben Morrison'
Rhododendron 'Hardy Gardenia'
(Possibly ['Vittata Fortunei' x 'Louise'] X 'Adzuma no hana'). Morrison hybrid introduced by
Creech in 1972. A perennial favorite with customers, this attention-getting bi-color blooms
in the early mid-season and features white
margined petals with bright splashes of orange
pink flames deepening to a darker pink flare in
the center. Growth habit is tall, fairly open and

(unknown X ['Hexe' x 'Vervaeneanum']). From
the Linwood azalea series, developed here in
New Jersey, this has become one of our most
popular evergreen azaleas. The pure white, fully double flowers really do resemble gardenias.
The plant is low growing and dense with dark
green foliage. A caveat: The name describes
the flower's appearance-it has no scent. Zones

[(yedoense var. poukhanense x 'Vuyk's Scarlet') F2 (or F3?)]. Weston Nurseries. Clusters
of dark red buds open to deep red flowers,
on a low and spreading plant. Foliage is very
dark green, turning to mahogany red as colder
weather moves in. Bred in central Massachusetts. Yes, that means exceptional cold

Rhododendron 'Irish Eyes'
Blue Sterling Nursery. Found as a witches'
broom on the variegated azalea 'Brianne', itself
a sport of 'Girard's Rose'. This one is a good
grower and very attractive in the fall when
leaves turn several shades of red and pink.
Flowers are rose pink, as you might guess from
the parentage. Growth is compact, remaining
low and mounding. Zones 6-8. H: 2-3 ft. W:

in MD. Lovely 3" white flowers are blessed with

form of an already dainty plant. From the
same origin as "Best Pink", the former Hall
Rhododendron Nursery in Drain, OR, this
was originally dubbed "#6". Great little plant
for a rock garden or path edge with clear pink
flowers early to mid May in NJ. Zones 5-7. H:

Rhododendron macrosepalum var.
linearifolium
(a selection of macrosepalum). This azalea is
strikingly unusual with its long narrow ( 1/8 inch
x 2 inches) hairy leaves and strap-like flowers
of similar proportions. The flowers look like
lavender-pink spiders at the branch tips. Zones
6-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.

Rhododendron 'Koromo Shikibu'
Rhododendron 'Madam Mab Chalon'
Said to be a Kurume hybrid, but is more likely
an unknown X R. macrosepalum). We never
seem to have enough 'Koromo Shikibu'. Its'
mid-season blooms always causes comments,
despite the floral competition in our display
garden. Long strap-like lavender flower petals
spread out in a spidery fashion giving this azalea a very unusual appearance. This can get
pretty large, so give it room! Limited quantity.

(('Glacier' x 'Tama-giku') x 'Getsutoku'). Gartrell. "Madam Mab" blooms in late May. Her
single, 3" wide flowers are white with tints of

This is a very low growing late blooming azalea
with tiny shiny rounded leaves. The flowers are

nakaharae hybrid with double white flowers

blooming azalea, the flower when it does
bloom, is a salmony red. 'Rice Kernel' refers to
the leaves, which are linear, about a half inch
long and arranged in whorls, giving the plant
a soft almost furry appearance. Zones 6-8. H:

James Harris. On first glance you might look at
this and say: Oh, another white evergreen azalea. But take another look. The buds are ever
so lightly blushed with pink and when open
the large flowers have a faint pink glow in the
throat. There is a mass of lime green speckles

never listed it until now. AKA 'Yaeshaeo' here
at RareFind, it's one of the earliest evergreen
azaleas to bloom, in a bright scarlet red. The
flower is a hose-in-hose "double" on an upright
growing plant. The Japanese name translates
as "two girls".(Yae = double, shojo = girl) Zones
