travel information
Information leaflets you received from ISU
Darmstadt beforehand
Some cash for the first days
Credit card/debit card and PIN-number (make
sure that your card is valid in Europe/Germany)
Comfortable shoes, also suitable for hiking
Clothes for warm and cool days
Raincoat and/or umbrella
Formal attire for ceremonies, such as awarding of
certificates
Adapter and converter for any electrical devices
(e.g. laptop, mobile phone, hairdryer) you may
want to bring. German appliances work on 230 Volt
Swimsuit or swim trunks
Any medication (e.g. for allergy) you may need
International SIM-card. It might be very expensive
to use your normal phone card, so maybe it is a
good idea to check out prices for international
ones. You can also purchase international phone
cards in Germany.
German dictionary in your language
Please be aware, that you have to carry your suitcase
from the airport to your accommodation and also on
the trip to southern Germany. Don`t pack too much!
General travel information
Electricity:
The power supply runs at 230V/50Hz. European-style
round two-pin plugs are in use.
You need a transformer and a plug that fits the German
socket.

GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION
Credit cards and the Euro currency on vacation in
Germany
The official currency is the Euro "€".
Credit cards are not very common; use them only
for petrol stations, large shops and major hotels.
American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa
are widely accepted. Carry cash or a Eurocheque card
as well.
Change money at banks, post offices, airport or train
stations or you can use your ATM card at most ATM's in
Germany. ATMs are multilingual so your Visa or debit
card could be used without problems.
Some banks have a reciprocal agreement with other
banks (for example Deutsche Bank with Barclays and
Bank of America) which saves bank charges when
using the ATM. Check with your bank before you travel.
Most banks are affiliated with several international
ATM networks (Cirrus, Plus, Star and Maestro). Please
think about enough small notes, a 200 or 500 Euro note
is very difficult to change.
Shopping in the cities of Germany
Most shops in the cities are open Monday to Saturday
from 10am to 8pm. Larger department stores and
supermarkets may stay open till 10:00 (e.g. REWE). The
REWE supermarket at Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main
station) opens from 10:00 – 20:00 on Sundays, too.
Smaller stores, especially in rural areas, lock doors at
6:00 and are often closed for an hour in the afternoon.
After hours shopping for basics is possible in petrol
stations and train stations.
Usually, on Sundays all stores/department stores are
closed. Some bakeries open for few hours on Sunday
morning.

Darmstadt has a population of 147,927 (2013).
Since 1997 Darmstadt carries the title Science City
(“Wissenschaftsstadt”). Darmstadt is the science
and high-tech-centre of the metropolitan Rhine-Main
region and the birthplace of numerous things that
have changed our daily lives. From the radio clock to
Plexiglas® and the first enzyme based washing agent
to the liquid crystals in our mobiles and notebooks - all
these are inventions from Darmstadt.
Darmstadt accommodates not only the technical
university and one of the nation’s largest universities
of applied sciences but also 3 institutions of the
Fraunhofer Society (research organisation).
Internationally renowned organisations such as the
space organisations ESOC (European Space Operations
Centre) and EUMETSAT, as well as the Helmholtz
Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) round off the
profile as a city of science.
Röhm, Schenck Process and Schenck Rotec,
Goldwell/KPSS or Software AG have distinctive
departments of research and development at their
disposal.

Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the Main)
commonly known as Frankfurt, is the largest city in the
German federal state of Hessen and the fifth-largest city in
Foto Elena Sommer
Germany, with a population of 708,543 (31.12.2014).
Frankfurt on the Main (pronounced ‘mine’) is unlike any
other German city. With many skyscrapers, ‘Mainhattan’
is a true capital of finance and business, home base for
one of the world’s largest stock exchanges as well as the
European Central Bank.
It also hosts some of Europe’s most important trade fairs,
including the largest book and motorcar fairs anywhere.
Yet Frankfurt consistently ranks as one of the world’s
most attractive cities for living, with a rich collection of
museums (e.g. Städel, Senckenberg museum, Schirn,
Goethe House), lots of parks and greenery, a lively
student scene, excellent public transport, fine dining and
plenty to do in the evening. Nightspots range from cosy
neighbourhood apple-wine taverns to some of Europe’s
most thumping techno-discos.
Frankfurt is also home to many cultural and educational
institutions including the Johann Wolfgang Goethe
University and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.
Due to its central location within Germany and Europe,
Frankfurt is a major air, rail and highway transport hub.
Frankfurt’s airport, the region’s biggest employer, is
the third-largest in Europe, handling over 56 million
passengers per year.

The Darmstadt Artists’ Colony (Mathildenhöhe)
Darmstadt’s biggest attraction is the former Künstlerkolonie (artists’ colony) at Mathildenhöhe, surrounded by a
lovely hilltop park with fountains.
The artists’ colony refers both to a group of artists and the
buildings at Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt in which these
artists lived and worked.
Famous for its Darmstädter Jugendstil (art noveau) architecture and creations, it was established in 1899 at the
behest of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig.
Fotos Alena Lobashova
On site, the Museum Künstlerkolonie displays
supremely elegant Jugendstil furniture, tableware,
textiles, ceramics and jewellery, while the exhibition
building Mathildenhöhe puts on temporary art
exhibitions.
Mathildenhöhe’s western slope is graced by the three
golden onion domes of a mosaic-adorned Russian
Orthodox chapel.
It was built from 1897 to 1899 for the last Russian Tsar,
Nicholas II, who married a local woman, Princess
Alix von Hessen (Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig’s younger
sister), in 1894.

The town centre is known for its most famous feature, an
alley named Drosselgasse. If you’re looking for a souvenir
thimble, this is definitely the place to come, but Rüdesheim also offers a variety of delightful vineyard walks.
Making the town worth visiting is, not only the wine
or even the Old Town itself, but also the picturesque
Rheingau landscape and the romantic Rhine.

The Messel Pit Fossil Site (German: Grube Messel)
The Messel Pit near Darmstadt was the first German
natural monument to be accepted by UNESCO on the
World Heritage List in December 1995.
This fossil bed provides a unique insight into the earliest
stages of the evolution of mammals. It documents the
history of the earth’s development 49 million years
ago, as the extinction of the dinosaurs brought radical
transformations in the animal and plant worlds.

Marburg is a university town in the German federal state
of Hessen. The town area spreads along the valley of the
river Lahn and has a population of approximately 72,000.
Narrow lanes wind through its vibrant old town, which
has a castle above it and a spectacular Gothic church
below. Founded in 1527, Philipps Universität – the world’s
oldest Protestant university – once counted the Brothers
Grimm among its students, of whom there are now
25,000. Thanks to them you’ll find some relaxed cafes
and nightspots.

LIVING IN DARMSTADT HEALTH MATTERS
Guide for students at h_da
Libraries
If you are looking for special books for your studies there are several libraries. The main library is in building
D 10 in Schöfferstraße 8 (1st floor). If you want
to borrow books there, you need a library card. In order
to get this card, you have to bring your passport, your
student ID card, and your certificate of the Residents‘
Registration Office and then fill in a form. (Be careful not
to lose this card, a new card costs Euro 10.). The library
staff members can help you, if you do not know how to
find books in the library. Most of the departments have
their own small library where you also have to present
your library card to borrow books. Another university
library is in the castle of Darmstadt (in the city center)
and a public library is located at Justus-Liebig-Haus,
Große Bachgasse 2.
Email and computer
The ISU team will provide you with data for WiFi
internet access. Your department will inform you on
the opening hours and location of the computer labs.
Computers are available in the library as well as in the
respective departments.

Second-hand articles and flea markets
You are looking for a second-hand bike or you want
to buy a second-hand computer? In ”SperrmüllZeitung” (www.spermuell.de) or ”Das Inserat” (www.
das-inserat.de), you will find innumerable small ads.
The ”Sperrmüll-Zeitung” for the region of Darmstadt
is issued every Friday. Moreover, there are big flea
markets in Darmstadt several times a year (e. g. on
Friday night and Saturday, July 26 at Bürgerpark).
The dates are published in the daily papers (e.g.
„Darmstädter Echo“, www.echo-online.de). Several
times a year there is a small flea market at the car park
of the company Schenk (Pallaswiesenstraße) near the
incinerating plant.
Telephone
If you use a landline, you usually pay your telephone
fees to the German Telekom. However, there are also
other private telephone companies. If you use the so-called pre-dialling codes (e.g. 01020) you are able to save a
lot of money, especially when making international calls.
You simply dial them before theactual phone number. If
you want to find out what is the best option for you, you
can do so via the web-sites e. g. “www.billiger-telefonieren.de”.
Cell phone
If you use your cell phone contract or SIM card from
your home country, you also have to pay fees for incoming calls.
Public phones
Most public pay phones no longer accept coins but only
Deutsche Telecom (DT) phonecards, which are available in denominations of € 5, € 10, and € 15 from post
offices, newsagents, some tourist offices and public
transport offices. You can also buy prepaid cards from
other providers which can save money and are used
by dialing a PIN. Credit cards can only be used from a
small number of public phones.

Waste
In Germany you have to sort your waste and put it into
different garbage cans. Used glass can be thrown into
special containers which are put up in many public places. Plastics, paper, glass, and organic waste are being
recycled and re-used.
