Tom Shifflet: No Longer
Embarrassed
Sweet Home-6 Senior Gears Up
for State Title
Last MarCh. fans were anticipating a great
matCh-Up in the 132 pound state final.
which pitted John Bena. Section Two.
Both
against Tom Shifflet of Section Six.
wrestlers looked years ahead of the rest of
the field. Just to make it to Syracuse. Bena
had to beat a couple of guys who normally would have made the finals themselves.
And Shifnet carried a rugged 42-1 record
with him. On top of all that, both were
sons of their wrestling coaches.
Shifflet had scored a pin and wins of 17-4
and 22-8 to make it to the finals. Against
Bena. he started in his usual aggressive
manner, firing leg takedowns one after another .
After about a minute into the first period .
he shot a high crotch. and Bena defended. Instantly. Shifflet switched off to a double. but again Bena countered with a reverse hea dlock . Using superb hip control.
he yank ed Shifflet onto his back. then
slapped in a double grapes hold. Within a
few seconds. he secured the fall . leaving
the crowd stunned .
' I was really embarrassed. ' says Tom Shifflet now. 'Up until my match, all the other finals matc hes were real exciting and hard
fought . Then I made a bad move. and it
was over before I had a chance to make it
a better match .'
He seems to be making up for it now.
though . He Is currently 16-0. Fifteen of his
wins have come by pin or technical fall.
New York Wrestling News. January 1990
The only full match ended In an 11-5 win.
Tom Is ranked number one at 132 pounds
this month. and most fans expect him to
win it all this year. And Irs about time hI?
did . After all. he's been taking his share of
sliver medals. and he seems due for some
gold. Besides his state runner-up finish. he
has won four silver medals In Empire state
Games action and a silver medal in the
Freestyle states. And as a sophomore. he
was runner-up In Section Six. When he first
cracked the varsity as a 7th grade 91
pounder, he posted a 20-6 record (11 pins) .
The first four tournaments he entered he
placed - you guessed it - second.
Along the way. though. he's gained a lot
of experience in all styles of wrestling . And
he owns impressive wins over Top Ten wrestlers. including steve Taylor. Joe LoPrestI.
Chris Terry. Ed Moak. Brandon MacNaught.
and others. And his two tournament wins
this year also netted him two MOW
awards . With a career mark of 142-15. he
definitely has the credentials to win a ,tate
title.
Shifflet is a dominating wrestler. His philosophy Is, why beat you by 5 or 10 pOints
when he can beat you by 15 or 20 points.
or better yet. by pin . On the mat. he only
goes in one direction - at you. He has two
gears. and If you can't keep up with this
gear. you definitely won't like his other
g ear .
Tam is an Honor Roll student w ith an average in the 90's. He is looking to attend a
Division I school and eventually becom e a
Physical Education Teacher and Wrestling
Coach .
Shifflet is a great bet to make it out of
Section Six without any trouble at all. At

Jeff Duque Injured;
Probably out for Season
Valley Central-9 Junior Injur,d In
Car Accident; will most likely miss
the rest of season
Valley Central-9 junior Jeff Duque. two-time
state placewinner. was injured in an early
January car accident and will probably be
forced to sit out the remainder of the season . Duque was seriously Injured when his
car slid on ice and crashed through a
fence and Into a tree . He had a punctured
lung and four fractured ribs In the accident.
After the accident. Jeff was admitted
into the intensive care unit. He has Improved a great deal since then. but it looks
like he will not be able to compete this
year. And although wrestling is important
to him. he Is also concerned with school.
Said Duque. 'My school work comes first.
I'm more interested in how this is going to
affect my grades. I'm Interested in college
and you can't go anywhere without good
marks.'
With grades in the upper 80's. Jeff hopes
to get into a quality Division I college after
his senior year. He started this year looking
unbeatable. and a lot of Section 9 fans
who have seen him were convinced he'd
win a state titie this year. Last year. Jeff was
third in Syracuse (105 pounds), and as a
freshman. he took a sixth place at 98. This
year at 119 pounds. he Is 10-0 with victories
at the Tri-Valley (MOW) and Mid-Hudson
Tournaments. Both competitions are considered to be amongst the toughest In the
state .
At the Trl-Valley. he blitzed Dan Faldzinskl
of Vernon Verona Sherrill. 11-2 In the finals.
At the tough Mid Hudson. he pinned Robert
Burke. Washingtonville (1 :07). Peter VI. John
Jay (1 :30). and David Conway. Longwood
(5 :25) . Then he topped Section 8 champ
and state placewinner Craig Schllfsteln of
Baldwin. 5-2. Conway and Schllfstein are
both Top 10 wrestlers.
.
_ Jeffs coach. Bob Zlfchock feels there Is
not enough time for Jeff to heal. There Is
Jeffs fortune been b etter. he would have
had over 150 career wins before he's finIshed (and possibly a couple of state titles) .
. Says Jeff of his situation . ' I feel my inJurtes have taught me that I want to win
more than I ever wanted anything before
In my life. My plans and goals for next
year In wrestling will even be more fervently sought after .'
, Concerning college. Jeff recently said.
One concern I do have is being considered for college . I do feel the colleges
who are considering me as a candidate
will understand my reason for missing
most of this season .' It's a sure bet they
will understand; they'll also realize that
Jeff Duque Is a blue chip candidate for
any collegiate program .
Both photos on this page show Jeff Duque

only four weeks left In the season before
the Orange County League championships. the qualifier for the Sectionals.
Zlfchock won't let Duque wrestle unless he is
100 percent healed. and said. ' I would feel
that way regarding any wrestler on this
team . It's painful to have any of them InJured. But this just happens to be one of
the top wrestlers on the team . Jeff is our
number one gun.'
Duque Is only four wins short of 100 victories. As an eight grader. he went 12-3. winning the Mid Hudson tournament and earnIng MOW honors. In his freshman year. he
also won the Mid Hudson tourney and went
35-2. His only losses that year were In Syracuse in March. And last year . he went 39-3
taking third at 105 behind Frank Fronhofe;
and Juan Carlos Garcia . His ten wins this
year brings his career record to 96-8. Had

Profile: Matt McLennan
Corning Senior is a Darkhorse
Every year. It seems like there's a kid who
comes out of nowhere to surprise all the
other wrestlers and experts by grabbing a
state title. or even a runner-up medal.
And then when you look at the guy's
record. you realize he really didn't come
out of nowhere. He was t here all along.
working hard. beating the b ig names. but
somehow not getting the recognition he
probably deserves.
Matt McLennan. 138 pounds. Corning-4.
is probably one of those guys. He's been
around - t he past two years. he's gone 302 and 31 -4. Last year he won two MOW
awards and took second In Secti on Four to
Brandon MacNaught of Walton . He previously beat Mac Naught. and owns w ins
over Top Ten wrestlers Kent Maslin. Doug
Shaffer. Cha d Shelt on . David Brainerd.
Marc Geer. David Colgan. TIm Godoy.
and some other big name wrestlers. Any
of these guys could conceivably win a
state title . and so could McLennan.
So far this season . Matt Is 16-0. with 12
wins coming by pins another by technical
fall. He's won the Johnson City and Deposit Tournaments. and looks wellprepared for this season . For his career.
he's been in 15 tournaments; he took 8
first's. 4 seconds. 2 thirds. and a fourth .
He's never not placed In any tournament.
and he is undefeated In dual meets. His
record is now 81-8.
Matt only started the sport as a freshman. He put 10 years Into hockey. then
one day just stepped onto a mat. loved It.
and threw away his thermal underwear.
He still enjoys other sports. but wrestling is It
for him. He is devoted to weight lifting.
and it shows In his wrestling . For a 138
pounder. he Is exceptionally powerful.
McLennan has made the high honor roll
twice this year. and plans on going to a DIvision I college and becoming an All
American. It's a distinct possibility. as Is a
state medal this year. Don't say we didn't
warn you!

New York Wresliing News, January 1990
Percy Clarke. pictured on this month's cover. has been a four-year wrestler for the
Marcellus Mustang wrestling team. He is a
very coachable. likeable person . He has
been a three-sport athlete. excelling in
football and lacrosse.
Percy started on the football team as a
freshman . He is currently shooting to become the first 100-win wrestling in school
history. You don't often see a heavyweight
with 100 wins. especially at 215 pounds for
four years. His record now stands at 85-181.
Clarke Is also looking to become only the
second wrestler In his league to win four
league championships. Much of his success can be attributed to his off-season
wrestling at the Mohawk Valley Wrestling
Club. and the work of assistant coach for
the past three years - Russ sutherland. former University of Buffalo heavyweight All
American .
.
Percy has set high goals for himself this
season. He wants to win the Section III title .
After finishing third as a soph and second
as a Junior (a close 4-2 loss to eventual
state champ Ron Vitullo). this could be his
year. This won't be an easy taSk, as this sectlon has some very good heavyweights. After high school. Percy will continue wrestling in college. along with majoring in
Physical Education and Recreation .

Kareem Johnson of Niagara Falls-6 is only
a Junior this year. But you wouldn't know It
from watching any of his matches. He Is
an extremely dominant. volatile 155
pounder wiho Is undefeated so far this
year. He specializes In high-scoring matches that look like Kareem Johnson Takedown Clinics. He mixes a lot of upper and
lower body attacks that confound most
opponents. And wihen he does face an
someone wiho manages to hang with him.
Johnson demonstrates poise and a knack
for pulling out the win.
Last month. Johnson walked through the
rugged Jamestown Tournament. pinning or
tech-failing everyone . Most recently. he
won the Niagara Officials Tournament. His
one close match was a 7-6 overtlme thriller
over Top Ten wrestler Mike Luick. also of
Sectlon 6 (Niagara Wheatfield) . Kareem
will most likely drop down to 145 for the
state qualifiers. wihlle Luick seems rock-solid
at 155.
A possible state match-Up would pit Sectlon 5's top-ranked steve Taylor. Brockport.
against Johnson. These two aren't strangers; Johnson pulled out a last-second Win
over Taylor over summer en route to an Empire state Games gold medal (in which he
beat Tom Shifflet of SWeet Home-6 6-5 in
the finals). Shifflet will most likely be at 138
for the state qualifiers. and with Johnson
(145) and Luick (155) . Western New York
looks good in the middleweights.
As an eighth grader (his first year). he
was 13-10 at 132 pounds. Kareem was 25-3
as a freshman 138 pounder. He won a
couple of tournaments and placed third in
the state qualifiers. Last year. he was 29-5.
with four tournament wins. including the
Section 6 title. In the states. he won three
tlmes and lost twice without placing . All
his loses were close decisions to placewinners .
Kar.eem wrestles all year round. and his
favorite style is Greco. It shows in his wrestling . He also plays football and runs track .
So far. several colleges have sent letters of
interest. but Johnson is not sure wihere he
wants to go or what he wants to study. Of
course. he has plenty of tlme to decide.
but then again . if he picks up a state title or
two. he'll have a lot more schools to pick
from!
.:c .. ~."",
~KAREEM JOHNSON, only a junior, is favored to win a med·
01 at this year's state tournament. Johnson is undefeated
so far this year. with most wins coming by fall or tech fall.
Seamus Lyman:
NYS Kingpin
Watertown Senior Perhaps
Most Recruited of all NY Wrestlers
You'd think he would have been nervous
last year before the state finals - Seamus
Lyman, that is. Sure, the Watertown-3 Junior had placed second in the states the
year before, winning 36 matches before
losing to two-time 145 pound state champ
Jamie St John of Port Jefferson-ll. And he
did own a 33-0-1 record coming into the
155 pound finals match.
But on the other side of the coin, he had
a pretty rough time making It to the finals.
After a hard-fought 7-1 win, he went overtime w ith muscleman Emilio Collins, Tappan
Zee-9, before coming out on top 5-2. And
he was down 5-0 at one point. In semifinals, he slid by rugged Chip Foster. Guilderland-2, 3-1. In that match, he re-injured his
thumb which had surgery only a few weeks
earlier.
And then In the finals, the biggest obstac le stood facing him on the other side of
the circle - JJ Stanbro of Johnson City-4.
Stanbro is New York State's winningest high
school wrestler - no one has won more at
this level thar. he has (188 wins) . And Stanbro's list of accomplishments at ali levels
stretches past the boundary of human
memory.
Despite ali this, Lyman wasn't nervous or
scared before his historical match. 'I was
nervous the year before, and lost 12-5. I
didn't want to do that again. Before the
match, I felt confident, and I think he felt
he wouldn't win.' And about that thumb,
Seamus taped up both thumbs so JJ
wouldn't know about the injury.
In the first period, both men seemed
cautious. They did open up after awhile,
but there was no score. In the second, Lyman took only 14 seconds to escape. He
added a two-point takedown later on,
and in the third, JJ escaped. The match
ended with both on their feet and Seamus
on top 3-1 .
This year, he'll be at 167. He's got 132
wins against 15 losses and a couple of ties.
Before he's finished, he may have close to
160 career w ins. Afterwards, he'll have to
sort out the many college scholarship offers. So far, about 60 colleges have made
contact with him, most of them more than
once. He's got it narrowed down to about
6 or 7 at this point.
Lyman, who has played lacrosse and
soccer all four years, will just wrestle in college. He will probably cut down to 158
pounds.
In Syracuse , you might see the name Lyman more than once . Seamus' younger
brother, Paul. has been tearing through opponents almost as dominatingly as Seamus. Still a junior, Paul sports a 15-0 record
with a couple of tournament wins. Both
have been in it for a lot of years. They got
their start from a bunch of uncles who
have quite of lot of state titles amongst
themselves - the Capones, Pete, Tom, and
Jim . With these workout partners, Seamus
probably had better moves in the backyard than did most high school sophomores or juniors.
Lyman , who is Vice President of the student Council. was Class President as a
freshman and sophomore at Watertown .
He keeps busy with sports during the year,
and also does som e wrestling in the offNew York Wrestling News, January 1990
season. This past summer, he went on a
two-week exchange trip to Hungary with
SU's Gene Mills as head coach .
The Section Three tournament this year Is
held In the War Memorial. This might give
champs from that section a slight advantage, as they will be a little more familiar
with the often-Intimidating surroundings.
But for Seamus' Lyman, it doesn't matter.
He doesn't need that advantage .
He
came, he saw, he conquered, and If history
doesn't repeat Itself this year, it will be the
b iggest upset In the state.

Section 6 Over-Achiever looks for
Return Trip to Syracuse
Mike Luick, Niagara Wheatfield-6 senior,
will be challenging for the Section 6 title
next month at 155 pounds. So far this year,
he is 10- 1, with his only loss coming against '
state representative Kareem Johnson of NIagara Fails-6. He is undefeated in duals,
and has been since tenth grade, when he
went 28-5 .
Last year , Luick was 36-3. He won four
tournaments, including the Section 6 title.
He was selected on the All League Team ,
and was the team's MOW. Despite not
placing in the state tournament at 145
pounds, he gained valuable experience
there, and will be a favorite should he return in March. Currently, his career record
stands at 74-9-1. If ail goes according to
plan for him, he wiil crack the 100 win mark
by March.
As team captain last year and this year,
Mike has proven to be an excellent leader
and a major reason for his teams' successes . Described by those who know his as an
over-achiever, Luick is a totally dedicated
athlete . He sets high goals for himself, and
then does the necessary things to attain
those goals, like summer wrestling, weight
lifting, and technique camps.
In addition to wrestling, Mike was a twoyear All League and All Western New York
football player. This past season, he won
the Division ill Defensive Player of the Year
Award . He also runs the sprints in spring
track. When he isn't working out or com peting, Luick can be found waterSkiing,
fishing, or playing the drums. Or working
page 14
on his antique can collection.
Mike plans on attending a four-year college next year. He wiil work on a degree In
Biology and Secondary Education . His current grade average is in the high 80's, and
he is on the Merit Roll.
Mike is extremely weil-rounded and hardworking . Says his coach, Armand Cacciatore , 'Mike excels because he is a fierce
competitor. In all my 32 years of coaching,
Mike Is one of the finest athletes I've ever
coached.' Luick may have his hands full in
qualifying for the state tournament again ,
as Section 6 looks solid In the middle
weights . But if he does make it - don't bet
the house that he won't - he will certainly
be a threat for first place.
MiKE LUICK, Niagara Whealfield-6 senicr,l55 pounds. participated in last yea(s stale tournament. and ~ aiming for
a return trip and a meclal this year.
Troy Bouzakis
on Winning
Pine Bush-9 two-time state champ
talks of winning In a recent letter
In a recent letter from Troy Bouzakis. twotime NY state champ and four-time placewinner. the Pine Bush senior outlined his
thoughts on the reasons for his success.
Winning
Win or Lose? Which is it? Win. of Course!
Winning is by far the most strived for in an
athletic competition . The satisfaction of
defeating an opponent and the sensation
of success is a very fulfilling feeling for the
athlete as well as the loved ones supportIng him.
Being a winner Is by no means a secret. Its
one of those things that doesn't come
overnight. especially in wrestling . Dedication. hard work. and support are needed
from parents and friends. as well as from
the coach .
Dedication plays a very Important part.
Wrestling Is a hard sport to be dedicated
to. There are many obstacles. Cutting
weight. mental fatigue. physical abuse
and emotional stress seem to lead the
race . So it Is important to keep your head
screwed on straight an not let anything or
anyone screw It off!
Hard Work: 100% Is not good enough .
There Is no limit on how far your body can
be pushed . While training on or off the
mat you must always realize that you mind
tires before your body.
Support:
There , ls nothing like support.
Mothers washing workout clothes. fathers
watching diets, friends and family at your
matches, and your coach critiquing your
wrestling . Support Is a very motivating feelIng. It is very difficult to win without It!
All w inners know these aspects play a major role In winning. If not. they are just plain
lucky. If your goal Is to become a winner
you must realize you will never reach it until
your mind has already been there!
When I followed my own suggestions and
thoughts. I was a winner. When I lost focus
on them. I was a loser. In conclusion. Winning Is Great! Losing sucks!
Regards.

Profile: Brockport's
Steve Taylor
Blue Collar Wrestler has Stranglehold on
Top Rank at 145
Brockport Is a small college town 30
miles west of Rochester In upstate New
York. Brockport High's coach Is Woody
Vandenburg. who was a 1981 NCAA Division III Champ for SUNY Brockport. Vandenburg. who Is originally from Queensbury-'2. was a John Riggins-type wrestler.
He'd come right at you. and then over
you. Woody had nothing fancy when he
pinned his way to the 167 pound national
title . He'd shoot. the guy would sprawl.
he'd shoot again. the guy would sprawl
once again . and then he'd shoot one
more time . This time. though. the guy
wouldn't sprawl so good. and Vandenburg would get his two points. Pretty
much blue collar - but itwas great action.
steve Taylor has a lot of his coach's style
In him . He's aggressive and confrontational. When you mix it up with him. you'll
feel it the next day. He doesn't seem to
use a lot of fancy moves. yet he wins consistently. blue collar style. But then when
you expect him to have a close matCh. or
maybe even lose. he breaks the mold and
demolishes the other guy.
He works out year round. and never
gives up on himself. Last year. he went 317. peaking at the Sectionals and states.
He took a strong third place behind twotimer Jamie St John (Port Jeff-11) and Don
Duell (Mexlco-3) . And despite having a
difficult time getting out of Section 5. he
had the condifence to believe he'd make
It to the states If he worked hard enough.
This year. Taylor Is ranked number one at
145 pounds. He's undefeated. and has
won two major tournaments - the Spencerport Bernabl/Telke and the Canandaigua
Bradshaw competitions. Both times. he
pinned quality opponents In the finals. He
seems to wrestle up to the level of his comoetltlon .
. At Spencerport. he looked so-so In earnIng a 7-1 win over second-stringer Eric Vasquez of Spencerport-5. Meanwhile. Chris
Terry. Whltehall-2. looked Impressive in
posting a methodical win over seasoned
veteran Tom Foos of Spencerport in the
other semifinal. But in the finals. it was all
Taylor . He led all the way. then scored a
stunning pin In the middle of the third period . Terry is top ranked at 138; he may decide to stay there after his one-sided
match against Taylor.
The funny thing about Taylor Is the fact
that he wasn't this good his entire career.
In fact. he broke into the varsity as a sophomore and only had an 11-10 record . Not
bad. but not exactly what you'd expect of
a guy who would soon be one of New
York's top middleweights.
A lot of summer v.trestllng Is how Steve Improved. He
worked out with two clubs and went to
every event offered. And even then. he
had to pull off Section 5's biggest upset to
make it to Syracuse.
Last year. Taylor had lost to Rush Henrietta's Scott Reddick twice during the year.
Both times were pretty much close matches. although they were one-sided (15- 10
and 9-6). Reddick was undefeated going
into his Sectional finals match with Taylor.
He was an unorthodox wrestler. using a lot
of wierd moves in beating everyone that
year.
In the finals. though . Taylor managed to pull off a 6-5 win . It came down
to the last few momemts. When the
smoke cleared. most fans were stunned;
several of them even dlssappolnted.
Yet Taylor seemed to gain confidence
and won every match at the states except for a hotly-contested one point sem i's
loss to Don Duell. Without even a few
day's rest. Taylor was working out for the
off-season events.
Wrestling has taught him a lot - 'you
have to work hard for whatever you want.
and thafs the only way to get the things
you want.' Like probably a state title ...

of the toughest In the state. In the past. the qualny of
wrestling at Windsor has been outstanding. Coaches

their wrestlers may da In top notch competnion. Since
1963. 46 Windsor champions have gone on to win 58
state t~s. Many others have won League. Class and
Sectional championships as well. It has truly proven to
be a tournament of champions. The highlight of this
yea(s finals was the 132 pound class. where Huntington's Ken Johnson defeated Waverly's Doug Shaffer 135. Shaffer was a 1988 state champ (105 pounds) who
