Message from the Director
This year marks almost two decades of celebrating and reaffirming students’ academic success
through the Tower Awards. As we celebrate the 19th anniversary of this award ceremony, we mark a
milestone for underrepresented students at Georgia Tech: Some 1,100 students were academically
eligible to receive a Tower Award this year – significant testimony not only to our students’
scholastic abilities but to their superior work ethic and commitment to excellence.
Our students certainly set the standard for the next generation for what can be accomplished with a
quality education complemented by diligence and sheer drive. So, tonight, we salute academic ability
– but just as importantly – we celebrate hard work and determination. Of course, we also know that
our students would not be here tonight without the unwavering support of their parents, guardians,
lab partners, academic advisors, mentors, tutors, faculty and staff, and many others in the Georgia
Tech community. Thank you all for doing your part in contributing to these students’ achievements.
For us at OMED, it is a distinct honor to be able to pay tribute to this many students who have risen
to the top. As we recognize them, we urge them to continue along the path of exceptional effort, as
we will continue to hold them to high standards. We also want them to encourage their peers to join
them on their journey of excellence. In the meantime, we at OMED remain steadfast in our
commitment to underrepresented students here at Georgia Tech and will keep working tirelessly to
support them in realizing their full academic potential.
As we seek ways to enhance OMED’s ability to serve our underrepresented students, we also reflect
with gratitude upon the generosity regularly demonstrated to this great institution through the gifts of
Georgia Tech graduates like Ernest “Ernie” Scheller Jr., IM 1952, for instance. His transformational
commitment of $50 million has positioned the Scheller College of Business for global prominence.
We recognize that there are many in this room tonight who are also willing to play that kind of role
in helping further Georgia Tech’s many world-changing objectives. It is because of such examples of
philanthropy that Georgia Tech students not only graduate with a world-class education, but they
also take with them an absolute understanding of how important it truly is to give back as a means of
paving the way for the next generation.
As OMED helps cultivate the next generation of global leaders, we support the Office of the Vice
President for Institute Diversity by strategically reinforcing academic excellence, and the personal
and professional development of our students. Under the previous leadership of S. Gordon Moore,
Jr., now the Executive Director of Student Diversity & Inclusion, OMED established a long and
stellar reputation for excellence and professionalism; I look forward to continuing that very tradition.
Since our last Tower Awards, Dr. Julie Ancis, Associate Vice President for Institute Diversity joined
the executive team under the leadership of Dr. Archie Ervin, Vice President for Institute Diversity.
As a result of Dr. Ervin’s strategic vision, Georgia Tech continues to have some of the greatest
thinkers and most dynamic presenters engage with the community at events like the annual Diversity
Symposium. This year, the Institute was privileged to have Martin Luther King III as the keynote
speaker for our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
In closing, I would like to share with you his father’s words of wisdom:
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically . . . Intelligence
plus character – that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

MISSION STATEMENT
OMED: Educational Services is the unit charged by Georgia Tech with the
retention, development, and performance of the complete student learner who
is traditionally underrepresented: African American, Hispanic, and Native
American.
Our mission is "to successfully transition and transform today's gifted, yet
inexperienced Georgia Tech student into tomorrow's promising leader."
With an innovative approach to promoting excellence, by stimulating life-long
learning, and cultivating high-performing problem solvers, OMED equips
students with the strategies to navigate the Georgia Tech environment.
OMED Programs, while targeted to the underrepresented, are beneficial and
open to all Georgia Tech students.
THE OMED APPROACH










Singular focus on academic performance
Creating and maintaining a culture that expects outstanding performance
Involvement of parents in the process and positioning them as essential to
reinforcing high expectations and facilitating performance excellence
Ensuring that process and program development are data driven
Treating students as customers
Viewing education as a “manufacturing” process designed to generate a
desired output from “raw material”
“Coaching” students to manage the GT system through development,
practice, and refinement of strategies
Focus on developing transition management processes for defined
customer segments: Freshmen, Dual Degrees/Transfers, and Graduate
students
Partnerships with other entities within the university as well as the
community at large
Service to broader populations of students
