Giving Thanks A community of Saints From generation to generation Luther Seminary Archives The Archives of Luther Seminary include material from all the predecessor schools which, over a period of many years and several mergers, formed the current institution. The founding date of Augsburg Seminary, 1869, is now used as the founding date for Luther Seminary. In addition to Augsburg Seminary, the Hauge Synod school, Red Wing Seminary and Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary (of the former United Lutheran Church in America and later the Lutheran Church in America) comprise the larger predecessor bodies to Luther Seminary. Giving Thanks 3 Keynote Speakers Rolf Jacobson,’91, Associate Professor of Old Testament The Narrative Lectionary The narrative lectionary is a set of readings for Christian worship, which moves through the overarching biblical story in a nine-month period. It respects the traditional Christian church year, with its principal festivals and seasons, as well as the rhythms of the school year or program year, which influence the program lives of many congregations. The narrative lectionary is an experimental partnership that began in 2010 and includes Luther Seminary Professors Rolf Jacobson and Craig Koester, as well as many congregations across North America. Rolf Jacobson joined the Luther Seminary faculty as assistant professor of Old Testament in July 2003. Jacobson earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in 1987. He holds a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary and a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. His teaching interests include the Psalms, Old Testament prophets, biblical poetry, biblical theology and biblical narrative. Ordained in 1991, Jacobson served for five years as associate pastor of Como Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul before continuing his education at Princeton. There he was the assistant editor for Theology Today and The Princeton Seminary Bulletin. He also served as a teaching fellow. Jacobson is an in-demand speaker and author who produces theological and biblical scholarship for both the church and the academic guild. He is the editor of “Crazy Talk: A Not-So-Stuffy Dictionary of Theological Terms” and its sequel, “Crazy Book: A Not-SoStuffy Dictionary of Biblical Terms.” His articles have appeared in Word and World, Theology Today, Interpretation, Teaching Theology and Religion and in many collections of scholarly essays. He co-authored the “No Experience Necessary” Bible studies. He has contributed to Augsburg Fortress’s “Handbook” series, Workingpreacher.org and Lectionary Homiletics. Craig Koester, ’80, Asher O. and Carrie Nasby Chair of New Testament Craig Koester, ’80, Asher O. and Carrie Nasby Chair of New Testament, began teaching at Luther Seminary in 1986. Prior to that, he served as a pastor in Princeton, Minn. He holds a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Olaf College. Koester became a member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas in 1995, and served as associate editor of New Testament Studies. Active in the Society of Biblical Literature, Koester is a member of the steering committee of the seminar on Hebrews and is co-chair of the seminar on John, Jesus and History. He teaches the popular Luther Seminary course, From Genesis to Revelation, and has twice been a scholar in residence at the Center for Theological Inquiry at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the creator of the DVD, “The Apocalypse: Controversies and Meaning in Western History.” He is currently completing a commentary on Revelation for the Anchor Yale Series. He is author of “The Word of Life: A Theology of John’s Gospel” (2008); “The Resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel of John” (co-edited with Reimund Bieringer, 2008); “Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel” (2003, 2nd Edition); and a Hebrews commentary in the Anchor Bible Commentary series (2001). Featured Music Bells of the Lakes Bell Choir Bells of the Lakes was founded in 1996 to promote musical excellence through the medium of handbells. It also provides an opportunity for highly skilled English handbell ringers to perform advanced level music. Membership is by audition and is community wide. Bells of the Lakes performs public concerts, records demonstration CDs of newly published handbell music and organizes local educational events. In their years together, the Sprengers have given everything to their family—including ensuring a legacy of good preaching. The Sprengers believe Luther Seminary prepares the kind of future leaders who impact the church through out the world. Because of this, they give through a combination of current gifts and deferred gifts to the Sustaining Fund and the Sprenger Endowed Fund for Excellence in Biblical Preaching. “Many Lutherans identify preaching second only to communion as the most valuable part of worship,” says Gordon. “The question is, what’s going to captivate the next generation? What’s going to ensure that the church will remain strong and vibrant in the next generation?” The endowment ensures that preaching resources like WorkingPreacher.org can be started—and sustained. The Sprengers contributed to help launch the site, which now reaches 52,000 people each month, impacting congregations and communities around the world. Gordon and Dee Sprenger are pictured on the dock behind their home, which overlooks Christmas Lake in Chanhassen, Minn. They have been donors since 1989.
